Morning Thread (1-23-2015)

Rise and shine, fellow Slurpee-drinking, bitterly clinging, terrorist arsonists who, for some reason, just don't like our President much. Racism, obvs.

This week's excellent podcast just posted. Ace and crew spend a lot of time talking about Bradley Cooper's balls and Tom Brady's eyes ... or maybe I have that backwards.

Note: If you listen to the podcast on Stitcher, I received an email from them this week that said they're still working on fixing the long delay in getting new content posted. This has affected our last 2 episodes.

8 The Gaystapo strikes in France. Three people have been convicted of hate crimes for tweets that were offensive to gays. They tried to pass the same law here but the Supremes shot it down as a violation of the first amendment. The ruling said you could have "hate crime" laws but not "hate speech" laws. I guess France needs a first amendment too.

The collapse was caused by decades of lending to people and businesses who would normally not qualify for a loan because of bad credit. But thanks to the Democrat "red-line" law banks were forced by the government to make loans.

Both Bush and McShitty warned of the pending ball balloon burst and that person of dubious sex from MA made fun of their their concern in the committee meeting saying things were just fine. The collapse occurred less than 6 months later.

I understand their impatience but they really shouldn't do much more than talk and plan before the Supreme Court decision. How the court rules will be more important posturing now. If the issue is upheld then they can go to town, but if the federal exchange subsidies are stuck down it all falls apart very quickly. It makes me wonder if these critics of the new Congress even know there is a huge court case pending.

They usually prescribe this powder called "Movie Prep." But the Magnesium Citrate is probably similar in taste. (cost me $26 last time I had the procedure, but my brother was charged almost $100 - thanks Obamacare! He asked for a generic and he got it much cheaper).

Miralax has absolutely no flavor at all so it was a breeze.

Sheldon Silver is the quintessential example of what's wrong with American politics.

Example - he refused to allow mixed martial arts fighting because the food service union is feuding with the owner of the league in Vegas.

He also put the kibosh on a domed stadium in Manhattan at the behest of the Dolan family, owners of the Knicks and the Garden.

I hope he rots, but I imagine he'll get a wrist slap and get to keep all the lucre he stole.

112 Given that the NFL is completely controlled by lawyers, as most of our institutions are these days, what's the NFL rulebook say about under-inflated footballs? What's the penalty for using them, what's the penalty for putting the needle in and letting too much air out?

Surely someone has checked by now...

The fact that it's not being brought up suggests to me there aren't any specified penalties for deflating footballs. Unlike for example, sticking your toe over the line of scrimmage before the ball is hiked, or punching a receiver beyond 5 yards, standing over the QB and questioning his manhood, or beating your wife, or smoking a joint, or so on and so forth. The NFL has rules for everything, and the penalties are known.

If it doesn't have one for under-inflating footballs, then shut up about it.

Live by the lawyer, die by the lawyer.

Unless I'm mistaken, Ray Rice recently won a ruling that said the NFL can't suspend him for more than the 2 games they gave him initially.

Which doesn't mean Ray will ever play again, but the league had no authority to up his suspension after the fact.

I doubt they have any authority to penalize the Patsies more than whatever it would be here. Which is probably an on-field penalty, if anything. So yeah, 5 yards and a loss of down. To be enforced next summer, in their first pre-season game.

What they passed is the exact same bill they passed last year. The one that died the Senate, and will NOT be signed into law by Obama.

Passing it is completely symbolic, and has no effect on current abortion law/policy whatsoever.

This is the worst script the NFL has run on the fans since 2009. That year the New Orleans Saints "won" it's first Super Bowl ever. A few years after Katrina as the city overcame, against all odds, and rebuilt and residents moved back home. Hollywood couldn't have done better.
The thing is the NFL sees itself as "entertainment" for the masses, or rubes if you will. Just watch the games and buy the sponsors products. Lot of money in car, beer, and Papa John pizza's ads dropping in the NFL's lap. Just think of it as "pro" wrestling with more dollar signs. Hype before the Super Bowl is just par for the course. As was the hype during the playoff games. It's all about money not who is the world(?) champions of pro football.

177 Oh, I've got to listen to the podcast this morning over breakfast.

I'll leave you with this:

The notion of recovery simply beggars credulity. The Obama administration is in a state analogous to what aerodynamicists call "dynamic stall," in which an aircraft is trapped by its own control surfaces at an angle in which no lift is generated and it begins plummeting like a brick. Efforts to regain control simply redouble the forces gripping the aircraft. The only solution is to punch out and watch the plane dig a hole. (See the climax of The Right Stuff for an example of this effect in action.)

heh.

192 And on another note, I have been reading again. "Then Quoteable Chesterton" and found this entry about John Bunyan who, as many people know wrote, "The Pilgrim's Progress" while in prison for preaching without a license or approval. Bunyan was a Baptist. He also wrote "Grace Abounding To The Chief of Sinners." This is what Chesterton said about the work.

[Bunyan wrote] "Grace Abounding To The Chief of Sinners"... perhaps the most powerful work ever wrought by genius with the materials of morbidity.

NO ONEe....CAN EVER forget the impression of that awful chapter [of Bunyan's biography], Grace Abounding, in which the sinner takes refuge takes refuge in place after place only to expect that roof after roof will crash down on him, and that he is safe nowhere if the very Universe he inherits belongs to one who is his enemy. Nor will anyone forget the chapter in which the sinner is reconciled to the Universe, and walks about the fields and cannot forbear from talking to the birds about the Grace of God.'

I have read PP, but not GA. I will have to look for it because I found those comments about oddly comforting.

My advice is not to harp on it and when he says, "I don't believe in God" don't freak out,but just say, ". O.K. Why is that? You want to tell me anymore"? so they're not put on the defensive and this may open up conversation. God's grace is abounding :^)and he may find his way back yet. One of the best books I read about raising teens is "Your teen is crazy" the author whom-Michael ? escapes me. I'm not saying that about teens being crazy for believing in God, just that it has a whole;e section about being calm in hormonal weirdness and kids trying to discover themselves and gives suggestions about how to calmly deal withy kids behaving in ways that are incomprehensible to parents. 239 And just one caveat about "Your Teen is Crazy" the author is a child and family psychologist outside of Philadelphia and has evidently seen a lot of gun violence, so he has a bias against the easy availability of guns. If you can accept that's where he's coming from, I think people with teens would find a lot of the comments in the book very helpful. I found it very refreshing for instance, for what he says on divorce-that parents should not themselves that it's not going to damage to your kid and urges everyone to not get divorced unless there is violence or abuse or no other choice- He says marital infidelity and divorce are crushing for kids (He has a whole section of step parenting too) In a culture that urges, "Find your way. You deserve happiness" about breaking up a marriage very honest and true-And anyone who's divorced here-please don't hear that as ANY criticism of people whose circumstances I don't know any can't judge. I just think the world would be much better with intact families.

I prefer the company of the former alkies, druggies and cons to the suburban middle class families at my church. Not that there's anything wrong with the families at all.

248 Yes, after I posted it I saw the typo. Sorry. Of course I meant "calm" :^)

Hey, and I had my periods where I was an Atheist-even after I became a Christian-so yes, people can come around.

Best to you.

Well, I opened my mouth a little too loudly when talking with
FenelonSpouse today at Wawa. I read a headline in one paper which talks
about the fall of Yemen and as we were going to get a cup of coffee I
said, "More chaos in the Middle East. Christians slaughtered all over
the place and we'll probably have a nuclear event before he leaves
office, and Obama has done nothing again fundamentalist Islam." If looks
could have killed I'd be dead on the floor from the look one AA gave
me. Did I mention that I can have a big mouth? ;^)"

A) What is a Wawa?

B) By AA are you referring to a minor league baseball player?

C) I agree that the reelection of President Obama pretty much guaranteed a nuclear event before he leaves office. The only question is whether it will be in a US city.

Hey Fen our 14 year old son has declared he doesn't believe in God. He
has been going to church since about birth. (My wife's church, Baptist) I
think its a phase but Mrs Freaked is distraught. Any advise?

We have already had the discussion about you have nothing to lose by
believing. I'm a bit more broad minded about it though and came to my
own conclusions long ago. I went thru a similar phase though.

Well, that's the issue right there. You should be taking him to the One True Church.

253 "You should be taking him to the One True Church."

Methodists?

Posted by: freaked at January 23, 2015 09:07 AM (JdEZJ)

254 Hey, could we pleeze not have the Reformation-Counter Reformation salvos today unless you were fooling around. ;^) P.S. Lots of RC kids go through the same phrase too of not believing in God.

I see. Does it have a few tables to sit and consume their tasty viands or were you just waiting in line?

One of my daughters delights in egging me on to rant about Obama when she sees that there are people of color behind me or out of my line of sight. Obnoxious behavior is apparently hereditary.

Posted by: Obnoxious A-Hole at January 23, 2015 09:11 AM (KDbAT)

257 Wawa doesn't have tables. I was just going over to the place where they have a large "serve it yourself coffee" section and the AA gentleman was just finishing up fixing his coffee and walking away.

LOL Well as long as you have an ally it's better.

I'm just fooling around. The proper answer to which is the One True Church is always obviously "Mine". It is hard to imagine anybody believing that some other church is the One True Church but going to a different one because they have better pot lucks or more parking.

Posted by: Obnoxious A-Hole at January 23, 2015 09:15 AM (KDbAT)

262 35:

Suggest a review of their lender handbooks. A FHA appraiser's house observation has always been above and beyond VA's.

HUD/FHA requires a minimum of a head and shoulders view of the attic and crawl space, etc., during the appraiser's house observation. The VA, just like most conventional loans, not so much. Last time I checked, you don't have to test the HVAC systems, appliances, windows, light switches, etc., on a VA house observation like you do for an FHA house observation.

Their residential housing MPRs are pretty similar, but I disagree with your statement.
