Saudi King Abdullah Has Died, Replaced By Crown Prince Salman

Over at Bloomberg, just a news blurb at the top of the page so far.

Now, the way I heard it -- and who knows what the hell the truth is -- is that King Abdullah was more or less pro-Western and Not Insane but the many princes surrounding him were Pro Al Qaeda.

What does his death do as far as Saudi Arabia's ugly game of playing Al Qaeda and the US off each other?

I don't know.

And Open Thread: Heading out for a bit before our podcast.

I'm betting he was a HUGE fan so he's probably covered.

But you bring up more questions!

I'm wondering though, are the virgins tailored to each man's desires? If the King likes redheads, does he get all redheads? Or do the virgins come in a variety pack or redheads, brunettes, blondes and a couple of bald ones for more exotic tastes.

And what if the King really likes long legs and tiny breasts? Does he get all long legs and tiny breasts or is it like a variety pack at KFC?

And does the King get to name the virgins? It would kind of suck to get to eternal paradise and have un-sexy, non-stripper names like Esther and Mildred.

There ought to be some feminists we could ask about this....

105 54 Saudi Arabia really had more to do with 9/11 than Iraq. The fact that we just sort of turned a blind eye to the sort of Wahabbi terrorism they were supporting still baffles me.

Posted by: McAdams at January 22, 2015 06:31 PM (yGD7t)The problem is that the Saudis have been reliable US allies, so taking them out would have undermined other alliances in the region. Additionally, US troops occupying Mecca would have made Iraq look like a school-yard scuffle.

Posted by: Colorado Alex at January 22, 2015 06:34 PM (OiH3z)

Also the KSA government has long been a target for bin Laden and al Qaeda, which hated them for being insufficiently religious. The Saudi government has been battling al Qaeda types tong and hammer for quite a while. While Wahhabi a-holes have a lot of support in KSA, including in high places, the government itself has viewed them as a mortal threat.

People making money. Jobs everywhere for anyone.

The Sauds know this is a threat. Americans discovering Capitalism? They have the greatest accountants that money can buy who can tell them, to six decimal places, the optimum number of barrels to produce, which will reward them with the most dollars. But that's not what they want. They want to bankrupt the frackers, put 'em out of business for good.

One could make the argument that 9/11 was simply the the opening salvo in a Saudi Civil War. Typical of mohammedans, they didn't shoot ANYWHERE near the target.

On the other hand, Pakistan has had their grubby little troublemaking hands in just about every conflict in the world for the past 60 years. And they've done it as a matter of National Policy, not as a case of their citizens getting frisky with their money, like the Saudis.

Good point. I'm no ingenue believing that the Saudi government is a bunch of fun-loving scamps, but I do believe that they feel seriously threatened by hard-core fundamentalists in general, and al Qaeda in particular. Given the pitched battles they've fought against al Qaeda cells in KSA, and the fact that their necks will be on the block if al Qaeda/ISIS takes over, I pretty much take their opposition to the former at face value.

Oregon’s Mr Cameron has issued tweets including:

I've got big balls
I've got big balls
They're such big balls
And they're fancy big balls
And he's got big balls
And she's got big balls
But we've got the biggest balls of them all

And my balls are always bouncing
My ballroom always full
And everybody Comes and comes again
If your name is on the guest list
No one can take you higher
Everybody says I've got
Great balls of fire!

Some balls are held for charity
And some for fancy dress
But when they're held for pleasure
They're the balls that I like best
My balls are always bouncing
To the left and to the right
It's my belief that my big balls
Should be held every night

259 US weakness is a top concern of either the new king or whoever does his thinking for him (likely some of the same group who have been near the top for a while, many of them having spent half their lives in the US and UK).

Because Iran, mostly. Less because ISIS radicalism, though US fecklessness obviously played a role there too. But the Saudis have the $$$ and connections to play the dirty game, even though they made some major blunders early on in Syria. Remember the entire eastern Arab world of consequence (Egypt, Saudi, Jordan, UAE), minus Syria, plays on the same side against ISIS-style nuttery.

Saudis have already put their ducks in a row, AFAIK, re the oil price thinggy. They've got a strategy and are prepared to ride it out. Again: Iran, mostly. Russkis too, a bit, maybe - but Iran, mostly.

Question remains, not new, whether they can ride their own internal tiger, the one where the Wahhabi base and legacy of the regime are alternately rented, repressed, or exiled, without any domestic nuttery getting momentum. They've done very well in the past at this.

Was carrying Pookette down the stairs this morning when I slipped and basically snapped my leg under me.Pookette is fine (she cried because she was startled and Mommy was yelling while hopping to her phone), Pooky has been a wonderful manservant, and the surgery to insert the titanium rod is early tomorrow afternoon. Prayers, especially for poor Pooky, would be appreciated.

310 Question:

Did the House of Saud get to where it is by being suicidal?

If they get in bed with Al Queda (or any of the other islamist outfits), there is no way they survive. Every single group they don't own (the Wahabist establishment) has said they are not qualified to be the guardians of Mecca, and it goes downhill from there.

So? Is Salman suicidal?

Posted by: ThunderB, ShapeShifter at January 22, 2015 07:52 PM (zOTsN)

325 junior @ 305 - yes the origins and nature of ISIS are fairly complicated and murky - and things change as we go along. The anti-Assad effort drew support from a "diverse" group of official and private sources, to say the least. Still does. Each with their own objectives, and the recipients (on the ground in Syria) each with their own objectives and issues. (OK, sounding like The Dude in Big Lebowski here)

But the Syrian civil war was/is organic and the real (very nasty) thing, arising from an abundance of good causes. Outside players affect it, but didn't start it.

ISIS as anti-Shi'a counterweight? Well, can't rule anything out. The Middle East, contrary to popular belief, isn't crazy. It's rational, and ruthless. And insane. But not crazy.

349 There was a time when students of Arabic would try to spend time in Yemen (North Yemen, back then, South Yemen being a weird sort of Soviet-aligned "ally"). Because the "purest" classical Arabic spoken there. That surely has changed since the 90s.

The mere existence of Yemen, like the UAE, represents a defeat for the Saud clan. But the UAE, Gulfies, are all soft and meek and oil-rich. Yemenis still wear the dagger in the belt and their tribal dynamism is a trip back through time, or a trip to Somalia or Afghanistan, if you can't borrow ace's time machine.

359 McAdams: Saudi Arabia really had more to do with 9/11 than Iraq. The fact that we
just sort of turned a blind eye to the sort of Wahabbi terrorism they
were supporting still baffles me.

Look up the term "petro-dollar".

After Nixon was forced to abrogate the Bretton Woods agreement, the US dollar was allowed to float, and promptly sank to the bottom of the fiat currency cesspit. Remember Whip Inflation Now, and other forms of government panic?

Volcker's secret agreement with the Saudis, protection for requiring all oil to be paid for with dollars, propped the dollar back up.

Bush couldn't nuke the Saudis without risking the dollar.

Obama is too fucking stupid to realize just how dependent the dollar's status as the world reserve currency is completely dependent on Saudi stability, and seems unconcerned about Iranian puppets encroaching on them.

In my opinion, Bush should have taken the hit on the dollar, and nuked them anyway. We would have recovered by now, without 8 years of Obama's spending.

366 Always remember this:

For thousands of years, the Arab tribes lived on the Arabian peninsula, eking out a living through caravan-raiding and enslaving East Africans, and often going to war and slitting each other's throats.

Then Mohammed came along and unified them into a cohesive fighting force so they'd slit their neighbors' throats instead of each other's throats.

So they galloped around and killed their neighbors, raped their wives, and spread their language and culture that way.

And so it went for a millennium or more.

And through all that time, no one paid the slightest attention to the black tarry goop that would occasionally burble up in pools in the desert sand.

What did the nomadic Arabs so with it? They'd sometimes use it to coat the fabric of their tents to help keep out the sand. That's all.

And then in the 1920s American and British engineers showed up and said, "Hmmmm, that's some interesting black goop you've got in your sand there. Mind if we take a look at it?"

So the Arabs let them.

The Americans and the Brits realized that there was an ocean of oil under the peninsula. The Arabs didn't know, didn't care. But it was theirs.

So the Americans struck a deal with the Arabs: We pump out your goop, and give you most of the profits, and we keep the rest. Your role? Do nothing. Just step aside and let us pump.

The Arabs agreed.

Within a short number of years, the Arabs were fabulously wealthy beyond any imagining. And it was entirely due to us. If we hadn't discovered their oil, hadn't developed it, they'd still be galloping around on horseback flashing scimitars and raiding caravans.

We created the monster.

A true-life Frankenstein story.

I'm not aware they spoke Hebrew at all day to day, but I'd believe that they retained a version of it for liturgical use. Like the Samaritans.

One thing the Yemeni Jews DID preserve was a treasure-trove of old Jewish tradition, independently of the Talmud(s). A lot of that ended up in the Islamic hadith. Some of it even ended up in the Qur'an (so it's said).

There was a photographer a year or so ago who published photos of when they were a young girl living in Afghanistan with her family(I think father was either a professor or attache'). While certainly not a thriving metropolitan city, Kabul actually looked civilized. Some wore burka's but most of the women wore suits and were working western type jobs. School girls (yes, girls went to school and university) wore uniforms, but they were white shirts, modest skirts , knee socks, etc. I'll try to find the link. It is stunning what can happen when a city /country is taken over by a stone age religious cult

Don't forget the 10 years of Soviet occupation, which killed off as much of that westernized, civilized, educated stratum as it possibly could.

I remember that. It was a remarkable collection of photos. Afghanistan in the 60s and 70s was pretty friendly to the West, and at least the urbanites in Kabul were trying to modernize.

I remember that American and European stoners used to travel to Afghanistan in the 70s for the hashish. They were not menaced much as far as I know. (No, I didn't go myself.)

All that changed with the Soviet invasion in 1979.

"The second, a woman with green lipstick, prefaced a questionabout
Cuba by noting Castro had "put the dick in dictatorship" and then
went on to accidentally refer to the first lady as "your first wife"
before giving Obama sticks of green lipstick for Mrs. Obama and his
daughters.

The final interrogator was a woman of 19 who acknowledged she'd never
really cared about politics until this very moment...asked him what his favorite super power would be -- it's flying --
and wanted to know what he could do to expand internet access in
China."

Najibullah's a Commie stooge with no real support; let's support a ragtag bunch of Tajik tribes with (also) no real support, and let the Pakis clean it up. Assad sucks; let's support the Syrian democratic opposition. Sihanouk sucks; let's support a coup and bail when the Khmer Rouge gets too powerful.

That won't happen because fracking is a quick in quick out deal. You can stop any time and pick back up.

Large oil wells, AKA Russia and Iran, require huge capital investment. They have to keep pumping even at a lost to try an cover their marginal expenses.

Cliff notes, you can bleed Russia and Iran to death. Fracking not a chance.

460 That won't happen because fracking is a quick in quick out deal. You can stop any time and pick back up.

Large oil wells, AKA Russia and Iran, require huge capital investment. They have to keep pumping even at a lost to try an cover their marginal expenses.

Cliff notes, you can bleed Russia and Iran to death. Fracking not a chance.

I'm not questioning our reserves. Or future reserves.

Just a war between energy producers. OPEC has an advantage, but if Saudi is in turmoil and jacks up oil to unknown figures, it could cause a ripple effect, or an earthquake.

The American Oil Boom Won't Last Long at $65 Per Barrel bloombergbusinessweek

this piece just above shows all of the US companies competing - nice details in numbers, etc

What I did not know:

The Bakken has been one of the primary engines of growth for the U.S. Since 2007, oil production there has risen from less than 200,000 barrels a day to more than 1 million. The boom happened so fast, pipeline companies didn't have time to build enough lines to the fields. The result has been a bonanza for railroad companies, which have quickly filled the gap. For the past two years, most of the oil that has left North Dakota has done so on a train.

We all know who owns/controls/profits from the train transport...

I'm expecting them to try to pull off something big here in the states, especially with Law Enforcement men & women have been repeatedly threatened, protested violently & killed. I think most LE are probably not working as usual to prevent more of that BS! Arrest, jail & print every single name that protests violently or disrupts public safety daily in National Newspapers every day for 3 months so everyone can see that you, or your trust fund white kid contributed!

It's time to stop it! I was hoping some would get frostbite & lose a few fingers or toes.
I'd be horrified if I was found without makeup, etc out in public. I cannot imagine wearing adult diapers as many did last week when they effectively ruined commute for thousands going in & out of Boston!

There was some snow predicted on Wednesday. In the morning I took my car to the dealer for inspection. They inspected it and also washed it.

I then drove about 10 miles to work, over roads that were heavily salted in anticipation. By the time I arrived, the car needed washing again.

The roads were whiter from the salt than they were from the slight dusting of snow we got later that day. FML.

Things sometimes happen & there isn't an explanation. I've had this one since November 2011 & that's first time it's happened to any car.

I used to get frost inside my windshield in my old Toyota. I think it was because the body was rusted so badly that moisture got inside and froze.

It doesn't sound like that is the case with your car, which is newer.

I spent time in my job at the Chrysler proving grounds in Chelsea, MI,
near Ann Arbor. The wildlfe there was incredible. And the roadkill was
tragic (turklets, raptors, pilleated woodpeckers, sandhill cranes, eg.)
They had a 10' fence around the entire ~800ac. complex. The local joke
was that it was there to keep the deer in.

They would be on the same branch on the tree in the front lawn at the same time every day. I'd get up and take my coffee out to the porch and look at them. Two big majestic birds. Eventually they'd leave and go flying out over the water.

We missed them when they stopped coming around.

When I lived in an apartment (actually a duplex house), my neighbor had a female black cat. She had a litter of three kittens, all black. I adopted two of them, and my neighbor kept the other one.

A few months later the mother cat got pregnant again, and this time had six kittens, again all black.

So for a short time we had no fewer than *ten* black cats in the house. I told her after the second litter was born, "If black cats are really bad luck, we'll both be dead by morning."

I was driving on the highway eating a pizza when I saw a big buck dead on the side of the road. 817 We used to have lots of rabbits in the yard. Now I haven't seen even one in years. The coyote population is up, however.

819 I wish Speaker Boehner would put the people ahead of ideology.

I wish the Speaker would find a way to work with President Obama for the good of all Americans instead of only the 1%.

821 We watched a nest of crows forom our window at work. One rainy day, the nest-tender was holding a sheet of plastic over itself and the brood. They're too damned smart.

I did something really stupid a few years ago. When I take breaks at work I usually go for a short walk. I was walking and saw an big gray owl perched on a branch in front of a house.

I was so excited. I went back to work, told my co-workers and even emailed a few people about it. "I just saw a beautiful owl!"

The next day, the owl was still in the same place. And the day after that. I was standing there looking at it and I said to a woman getting out of her car, do you see that owl over there? I've never seen an owl in the city.

She looked and said, I don't see an owl. I see a bunch of branches and walked away.

I walked across the street and got closer. It was a f'ing bunch of branches.

That's when I knew I needed glasses. I felt like Mr. Magoo. I was seeing nonexistent owls - and worse telling people about it.

I felt too stupid to tell anybody. A few months ago, I heard my boss say, "Donna saw an owl in a tree near here a few years ago.."

836 It worries me that Speaker Boehner seems more interested in pandering to the far-right base than in finding areas of common ground with President Obama.
