Morning Thread (1-22-2015)

Welcome to the party, pro-lifers. The GOP is running out of base constituencies to sell out, though. And that's a good thing.

Of course you are correct. I strenuously object to it, but Vic's link was about a guy who went to a different baker, and asked her to write an "offensive" anti-gay statement, which she refused.

One of the attractions of the HQ -- for me, anyway -- is that people here are relatively free to express thoughts that some (Democrats, mostly) would find offensive. Other places (think Kos and Tepid Air) are sometimes pretty quick to bounce anyone who doesn't toe the Party Line.

Not defending teh Moo-ster here. He likes to wander right up to the edge sometimes, and I don't find anything either thought-provoking or especially sensible in what he says. But he's part of the background chatter, and there's no doubt each of us can find at least one regular commenter around here who p*sses us off.

As of now, anyway, I'd rather not see any of the familiar commenters get the hook, and as for them providing ammo for the leftoids, well fuck 'em if they can't take a joke (and they can't).

You don't wanna ask who and what I'd ban around here. Especially because this ain't my site, and I'm happy to leave the driving to Ace.

Well, mostly....

96 Good grief; People need to get a life. Unless you live in Lower Pudunkville and there's only one baker in a 20 mile radius and that baker refuses to make a wedding cake ( the latter of which I find hard to believe) there are plenty of people who will cakes for your straight or gay wedding reception. In fact, you can probably order cakes online. As for the person who wanted an anti gay cake that's just stupid. and offensive.

105 The Devil is in the details.

How Obama's New Tax Plan Discriminates Against Stay-at-Home Parents

...

The Obama policies would also increase anti-marriage incentives in the welfare system. While the two-earner credit would reduce marriage penalties in some cases, the expanded EITC for non-parents and for absent fathers is larger than the two-earner credit and is blatantly anti-marriage. Absent fathers and other males would receive this new EITC credit only as long as they were not married. When they marry, the new credit would be removed. Overall the Obama policies increase rather than decrease penalties against marriage in welfare. Policy should seek to reduce marriage penalties, rather than take another strike against it.

Obama also proposed to expand the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit, tripling the maximum benefit amount. Since the proposed child care credit appears to be non-refundable, it would primarily benefit families with incomes between $40,000 and $100,000 who use paid daycare. As such, the policy discriminates against married-couple families who make a financial sacrifice so that one parent can care for infant and pre-school children in the home. Tax policy should not unfairly discriminate between families using daycare and families making a financial sacrifice to provide parental care to their children.

110 Some great data in this Pew research on what Muslims believe. We are constantly told that most Muslims are 'moderate' and only a tiny percentage are radical.

http://tinyurl.com/mheey6u

In most ME countries, support for Sharia law ranges from 70-90%

56% of all Muslims in the ME surveyed believe people who leave the faith should be executed.

Now admittedly, the percentages for more secular countries like Russia and Turkey were significantly lower - but if you want to assess what 'true' Islam is, do you go to its birthplace and where it is practiced by the majority (ME, North Africa) or do you go look at minority Muslim communities in St Petersburg and Boca Raton FL ?

what is this referring to?

the Pats thing will die down. I read this this morning:

Everything you need to know about the Patriots and DeflateGate

over at SB Nation

The rulebook says that teams tampering with balls are subject to a $25,000 fine. But this is the NFL, where the commissioner has the authority to deliver ad hoc discipline as he sees fit. If the league's investigation does determine that the Patriots intentionally deflated their game balls, most expect them to lose a draft pick and be subject to some heftier fines than the minimum.

Unless the pressure of widespread corruption in the NFL is Godell's fear at the moment, nothing will really happen.

172 Where did Moo and some other commentators get the idea that Lenin was a Jew? Lenin's maternal grandfather was Jewish, a fact his wealthy family kept hidden. Having a Jewish grandfather makes one Jewish only by Nazi standards. Lenin would not be considered Jewish by the Jews and certainly he never thought of himself as one. Similiarly, Karl Marx was raised Lutheran and probably would have hit someone who called him a Jew - he was a raging anti-Semite.

Targeting people, like a firing squad, just because you don't have the same views is a terrible thing.

The "attacks" or whatever you want to call it at Gabe, for example (RINO or not) always bothered me. He seems like a decent guy, has his own set of views. Some I agreed with, some not. But why the constant haranguing, even if some of it was snark, I'm sure it affected him somewhat. At least to the point where he said, meh, what's the point.

It's hypocrisy. Treat those as you would treat yourself, or open mind conversations...

It crosses the line with harsh personal attacks, extreme racist statements and whatnot. We all know when it really crosses the line.

213 If the votes aren't there? Um, here's a thought: how about the Democrats run on voting against late-term abortions in 2106. With 64% of the public and 71% of women (recent polling data) against 20+ week abortions, I fail to see how this would be a losing effort. Put the infanticide loving politicians on record and then beat them senseless with that record in the next election.

I don't get the "well, the votes weren't there so screw it, let's not even try" mentality. Sometimes, you work for the future, not the present, and the future is the election in 2016. Supporting infanticide would be a net positive in only a small percentage of districts and states. But the surrender caucus did what it normally does: it let its enemy dictate the battleground and then refused to fight. If this is your idea of winning, well, let's just say that you and I have different opinions on the matter.

I think it's about free speech and equality under the law. Of course the baker should not be forced to violate his/her beliefs. But they tried to force one baker to violate one set of views, so if another baker is not treated equally with a different set of views, sounds like a recipe for appeals eventually going up to SCOTUS.

Where did Moo and some other commentators get the idea that Lenin was a
Jew? Lenin's maternal grandfather was Jewish, a fact his wealthy family
kept hidden. Having a Jewish grandfather makes one Jewish only by Nazi
standards. Lenin would not be considered Jewish by the Jews and
certainly he never thought of himself as one. Similiarly, Karl Marx was
raised Lutheran and probably would have hit someone who called him a
Jew - he was a raging anti-Semite.

Posted by: Donna V. (brandishing ampersands) at January 22, 2015 08:02 AM (+XMAD)"

Karl Marx's parents were Jewish so he would be considered Jewish by pretty much every rabbi as well as by Nazis even if he personally rejected Judaism. The Nazis adopted a lot of their program from early 20th century American progressives. That includes their views of eugenics which, being Germans, they took to insane extremes, including viewing Jews as a separate race. The American progressive tradition on eugenics drew heavily from then contemporary views on race where the "one drop rule" was prevalent although they also devoted a remarkable amount of discussion to subjects like qadroons and octaroons.

Both Marx and Lenin would be counted as Jewish by any of those celebritory articles which list Jewish scientists, movie stars, sports figures or great men in history. Intellectual honesty would argue for applying the same standards to people one might be less enthusiastic about embracing.

Possibly a good place to meet up with unofficial campaign donors from overseas? That way she doesn't have anything recorded in the States that she was meeting with Chinese/Saudi/etc. people to fluff up her bank account?

God knows the MSM does it's best to not report on things outside the US. Unless it involves an airliner, or a dippy blonde getting herself killed being stupid inthe 3rd world tropics.

good point on the stealth fly-ins to donate

Slick Willy had a lot of the Saudi money, etc gifted to him.

It's such an odd, out of the way, very small population spot in Canada. This time of year, it's one of the worst places to be as far as the cold.

I realize it's about money, but a very odd spot to be the end of January.

It is against the law for any foreign national to contribute to any candidate. But the Clintons already violated that law

The Federal Election Campaign Act (FECA) prohibits any foreign national from contributing, donating or spending funds in connection with any federal, state, or local election in the United States, either directly or indirectly. It is also unlawful to help foreign nationals violate that ban or to solicit, receive or accept contributions or donations from them. Persons who knowingly and willfully engage in these activities may be subject to fines and/or imprisonment.

Destroy the local police force in order to be begged to fix it, ie take it over entirely.

so listening to BBC. They had the ex GITMO envoy on. His job was to repatriate detainees. He quit on Dec 31 and isn't being replaced.

There are 122 detainees left.

54 of them have been cleared for release, but no one will take them because their home country like Yemen is in an uproar or they will be killed when they get home. Most are from Yemen in fact.

The other 68 have not been cleared for release, but they must be the worst of the worst.

Currently we are paying Slovakia, Georgia, Oman and Uruguay big sums of cash to take detainees.

A detainee has written a book and is being reported on in the Daily Mail describing his torture. He is a member of Al Qaeda so I am sure the book contains no fabrications. Called GITMO Diary

Yesterday, she went in for her regular ultrasound, she is 19 weeks along. The baby actually looks like a baby now.

Now, they have all these new-fangled machines and technology that they can get a shot of pretty much every angle imaginable. She sent us three images. One is the overall picture. One is a picture of the foot. There are five toes. I counted. And, finally, they did a 3D scan of the face. And, the little one is smiling. It's smiling. I could have cried.

400 Oppositional Defiant Disorder presents in children too - not sure that it can be plausibly applied to adults.

My understanding is that the kid automatically says the opposite of what you say...so you say "the sky is blue" and the kid says "no it isn't."

Mom and dad actively sought and ODD diagnosis for me because I defied them.

Imagine their dismay when they were told that no, your child doesn't have a mental disorder, he's a teenaged boy, hates everything, is angry at everything, and doesn't want to listen to you.

In the late 70s and 80s it was parents who wanted a diagnosis for everything....

~1994 or so is where the schools wanted a diagnosis for everything...now it is DoJ I suspect.

Just a few months ago, the Charles Van Dusen mansion sold in the Palmer Woods section of Detroit for only $750,000. Van Dusen was the CEO of Kresge & Co., the precursor to Kmart.

Same neighborhood had the Fisher (Body by Fisher) mansion, which was even nicer and had formal gardens. It sold for less than a million.

418 its not new in adults. I used to sit on a discharge board that reviewed cases of military members who had personality disorders and were unfit for duty. Adults can be diagnosed with ODD.

Not when its responsibly diagnosed. I've had calls from parents where the 8yo kid is attacking infants, breaking up furniture, assaulting parents, etc. and no amount of physical discipline changes the behavior until meds are prescribed and often forcibly given for a time.

He is an argumentative asshole who likes to push people's buttons. That hardly makes him unique on this forum. I am not particularly enamored of the abuse that the Pope comes in for at this place and I was very less than pleased with the "Pope is a Nazi" bullshit that his predecessor was smeared with but putting up with that is the price of engaging here.

Or are you saying that we should learn from our Mohammedan compatriots and treat any slight as deserving the maximum sanction that we can bully into effect?

425 Late term abortions is a quagmire argument for the left and even the right. Is it not a baby under 20 weeks but a baby over 20 weeks? You can never square that circle. Culture change is the only way.

Kudos to Lady S in marching today. Votermom, you are correct, younger women far more pro-life. It's a good pendulum swing that will probably bring back stigmatization of abortion. More effective than any legislation but slow; hopefully, inexorable.
