Via Laura Rosen Cohen, I learn of the strange, circular journey of his life and death. His father was a Polish Jew who fled to Tunisia to lead a life free of pogroms. Georges was born there in 1934. Rep. Thaddeus Kirkland:
In the near future, I will introduce legislation amending Title 18 of the Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes, which will address the use of human silhouette targets at shooting ranges.Rather than perpetuate violence by continuing to allow individuals to practice their target shooting by shooting at human silhouette targets at shooting ranges, my legislation will prohibit the use of targets that depict human silhouettes at shooting ranges across the Commonwealth. Instead, silhouette targets could include, but are not limited to the following: white-tailed deer, black bear, wild turkey, and elk.
My legislation creates a new section under Title 18 Chapter 61 regarding firearms and other dangerous articles. Specifically, the bill prohibits the use of human silhouette targets at shooting ranges across the Commonwealth except by law enforcement officers, military personnel or other public safety personnel in line with their official duties.
So in PA you can legally shoot a person in self-defense (which is why most people own guns) but you would not be allowed to practice shooting someone in self-defense. Because violence.

Re: the birth certificates, yes, the USA does that. If a baby is born
overseas, the parents must go to the nearest consulate or embassy as
quickly as possible (like within 2 weeks, I think) to present proof of
their citizenship and the birth information. Then, the child is issued a
US birth certificate and they're treated as native-born citizens.
Both my aunts were born in Germany off-base, and that's what my grandparents did.

Had a kid born overseas in 2002, sorta like that, but we got a 'Consular Report of Birth Abroad" and passport. Use to actually have to get a "Naturalization". The laws change every now and then going back to 1776.

It's been a long time and it wasn't like I had a fully-developed concept but the core idea was to create a strain(s) of bacteria that would produce a set of DNA fragments and another strain that would randomly combine the fragments.
Then you could map the various fragments to say cities in the traveling salesman problem and let the bacteria create billions of possible combinations. Since you know the minimum size of the optimal solution, you could filter out all the fragments of at least this size and use PCR to amplify their count. Likewise you know that all solutions above a certain size are worthless. The tricky part would be figuring out a way to filter out just the size range you want and being able to read the results in a feasible time frame.
Like I said it was mostly just an idea and I hoped to work on finding some way to implement the hard/impossible parts. Plus my background was not in biology.

Due to restrictions on when and how long the babies can "work", two babies were to be there the day of shooting those scenes. Baby #1 showed up with a fever. Baby #2 was a no show. So in order to keep with the shooting schedule, they used the prop.

That the GOP went along with inviting him is an indication of who's side they're really on.

FoxBiz is marketed constantly on FoxNews. All day. One of the hosts of the Independents, Kennedy, is a regular on Outnumbered on FoxNews.
All the FoxBiz hosts are regular guests on FoxNews. They are always introduced as host of ____ on our sister channel FoxBusiness. FoxNews constantly runs little "Channel Finder" promos to help people figure out where FoxBiz is on the dial.
But it's not working.
CNBC is having historic low ratings. All biz news is. But CNBC still avgs 3x FoxBiz ratings during the day -- and 5-10x at night when the switch away from business news and to punditry and other crap.
In the prime demo, 25-54, last Friday, FoxBiz avg 3k viewers. 3 thousand. That's it. 370k 25-54 were watching FoxNews at the same time.
FoxBiz is gonna get a massive shake-up soon, I think, if ratings can't be turned around. They'd get better ratings with infomercials.

Nah, too much litigation already, and it takes too long. If the allegations are true, and resulted from a willful intent to break the rules, as commissioner I'd go Islamic and put the guilty parties on the Pete Rose program, and hose the team generally for good measure. Five years without playoff eligibility would kick their revenues in the balls (no pun intended) without needing to impose a financial penalty explicitly.

Weirdest bit on conservative media is NewsMaxTV. It's on Dish and DirecTV. Weird thing is NewsMax isn't charging any fees. In fact, reports are that NewsMax is paying Dish and DirecTV to carry it. Basically the opposite business model of every other tv channel.
Not clear how long NewsMax can do that. Their also stream it free on the internet. It's ultra-cheap. JD Hayworth is a host. It's just talk radio with a green screen. Production values of a youtube channel. A cheap youtube channel.

I crank up the spring tension so the sucker snaps shut sharpish when released, and when I rebuilt the fence, reversed the sense of the gate so that the prevailing winds tend to blow it shut rather than open. I still worry about it, but less.

Problem is, she just got there. It's when you're most vulnerable -- you don't know anybody, you haven't patched around the problems, you haven't made a new tag for the dog 'cause you don't have a phone yet, and you're exhausted from travel....
The chances are decent that Rosie will be recovered. Even the dippiest dog has instincts that keep it from running up to bears and wolverines and sticking its nose in their crotch -- and even one with no sense of direction can generally tell that civilization is towards lights, car and people smells....while wilderness is towards darkness, caribou and moose.
But it will likely take a lot of sustained effort and perseverance in the face of disappointment. I taped a lot of freakin' flyers to a lot of light poles and sign poles -- and we ran by the shelters nearby (IIRC, we were nearly equidistant from three) every day (no tags, collar, or chip).

Yep. When we drove across country moving back to CA I prepared flyers before we set out, just in case. We had collars and chips and flyers and a buttload of paranoia. But it all worked out, to our relief.

I checked the LGF "stalker site" rather than watch JEF lie his ass off. I walked from the place around 2006 or so - got sick of his constant harping on creationism, it just got boring, so I didn't know about a lot of the stuff that happened afterward, although I knew there had been a massive purge (and I found myself on the block list).
I read about some of the stuff he's been posting lately. It was like watching a train wreck. He's really very concerned about Islamophobia.
And his readership has dropped off by 90%. He's constantly begging for money. I don't know how the hell he makes ends met. He's clearly not in danger of starvation.

I think the idea is that cheating can provide an "edge" that's worth a certain number of points.....but if a game is won by significantly more than that number of points, the cheating is merely ancillary to the win and not the proximate cause.
I'm not saying that I subscribe to this -- I'm saying that this seems to be where that argument begins.
My personal view is somewhat different. Let's take, for example, voter fraud. There are some who say, "both sides do it" and "it's only a small edge." Me, I'm thinking "nuclear repercussions" to candidates and the (literal) death penalty for being the one to implement a scheme.

"to the manor born" is the one that implies being born into wealth and status. That's really the only one I knew.
Apparently the usage nazis get angry at people for not using the Shakespeare spelling -- but nowadays we rarely use it to mean what Shakespeare meant, so doesn't seem much of a reason to use that spelling.
This will probably continue to be argued about for hundreds of years.

The tiers are where FBN gets screwed. It may be "available in 75M homes", but all that means is that it is available on one of the more expensive tiers that the vast majority don't subscribe to.
Once Fox gets around to their new carriage agreements, it will get put into the lower tier packages.
Right now, CNBC is the choice of businesses in the financial fields because it is on the cheaper tiers, so they turn it on. Once FBN gets in those tiers, it will become like Fox News in gyms.

You know - sit, stay, get out of the kitchen kinda stuff*.
Of course, this girl hand feeds one of her dogs because it won't eat out of a bowl. Yeah. I didn't believe it either, but I watched it happen. She has obviously never spent a second training them.

I lost no less than five people in this past year.
Three to suicide and two to Natural Causes.
I have no job and I still owe One-Hundred K on this fucking place.
I NEED to get my head back in the game before I sink the people who love me.
Needless to say, I am a bit on the "Beer-Side" tonight.
The insomnia isn't enough, so I toss guilt on top of it.
I've never been anything more than a civilian that wanted to make a buck honestly.
I've never Put It All On The Line.
I do, however, know what it is like to lose close friends. Some of them fairly close-together.
I lost My Uncle, My Aunt, my neighbor, My "Mom away-from-Mom" and a close friend in the past six months.
It ain't easy.
I can hang around for a few more hours if you need to hang-out.

On the ferry coming up from Bellingham, most of the folks were military
relocating. Who relocated to AK in January? Mostly air force, although
there were a couple of grunts. Nice kids, nice families. We had some fun
discussing how they would appreciate living in sanity land where the
military are actually respected and treasured for their sacrifices. Made
a few guys smile with that one, and also when boy told them "thanks for
keeping us safe."

I only get it "in theory", rather than "in practice". But it's clear as night and day to me. They're "your kids" and you've done your best to make them ready for a harsh, cruel world. Of course, you'd feel each loss. But counting up the losses isn't a valid measure of performance in life or the battlefield. None of this are going to make it out of this alive. The question is what we will do while we're here.
And for you, you should be thinking of how many of "your kids" are home today with their wives and children, thanking Providence that T9 gave 'em the extra 2x4 to the side of the head that had them doing the right thing when shit got real.

Yeah. I understand. But you have to expand the envelope a bit and realize that you aren't the first person on earth to go through this, and there's a lot of folks who have been through the same wringer.
What's kept me sane is my best friend lost one of his closest friends (stupid ass traffic stop, didn't follow TTPs... got dead) got ghosted.
It ain't your fault. You just do what you can where and when you can and after that, it's their lives to live or not live. You can't be everywhere at once.
If I didn't realize this years ago I'd be batshit crazy by now.
It'll lurk, and you'll never stop questioning yourself until the day you die, but at least you have a tool to keep the demons back.

I will leave the drama behind as soon as I recognize it, and I will leave the grief as enough time goes by.
I will take advantage of my present mania to accomplish as much as possible before the doldrums set in. I will turn to family and friends and honestly ask for their help to work through the doldrums so that I may go on to whatever comes next.
When the time comes I will seek new love. I will wait until I have regained my own center and can exist as a complete person on my own. I will wait until I clearly know the difference between being alone and being lonely. When I am ready, I will act without desperation. However, I will use great care. If I start to feel anything really promising, I will turn to my lady friends and specifically ask them to help me identify those female predators before it is too late. With luck, I will find another good woman who wants to share her life with a good man and I will work every day to make sure I live up to her standards so she will feel compelled to live up to mine.
In short, I will be fine. I just need time.

SoC is doing very well, all recovered from flu, on the verge of learning to crawl. Right now he's doing this combined army crawl and pushing with his legs thing, only a few days I'm sure before he masters it.
Maddie is well, saw her grandparents for Christmas. She still needs some more reconstructive and plastic work done, but she is fully recovered in terms of health.

Now that zero has laid out more of his plans for the destruction of the country I'm sure the GOP will quickly move to do nothing. We keep thinking that the national nightmare will be over in a couple of years but I see nothing at this point that indicates that will be true. We'll get some mealy mouthed candidate who will lose to hilldog or the equivalent and then 8 more years of SSDD.
