Belgian Counter-Terrorism Cops Kill Two Suspected Terrorists, Forestalling What They Call an "Imminent" Attack

The entire world braces for the "Nightmare Scenario" -- anti-Muslim backlash and curtailment of immigration from Islamic countries.

Counter-terror police, in a series of raids, rounded up suspects they believed were intent on launching terror operations in Belgium, officials said.

At least two suspects died during the raids, and another was injured...

There are actually counter-terrorism operations going on in four cities: Verviers, Brussles, Molenbeek, and Vilvorde.

The terrorists are reportedly under the direction of ISIS.

A Belgian prosecutor said that the planned terrorist attacks would have been on "a grand scale," and said further that "another Paris" had been averted.

Earlier this week, police arrested an arms dealer alleged to be linked to the sale of weapons sold weapons used in the Paris terrorist attacks.
Neetin Farasula, from Charleroi in French-speaking southern Belgium, is thought to have been involved in negotiating the sale of guns to Amedy Coulibaly.

Video of the assault -- well, mostly darkness and the report of machine-guns -- below.

Update: More video added.

32 In the '60s-'70s, Belgium was known as the easy place to steal passports and other documents that terrorists needed. Must be still.

But the Euros are bad ass once they act. Their police there have lots of experience: They pretty much shut down Baader-Meinhoff and offshoots then and those leftists killed many, many innocents. One of the gang said they needed two people in support of one terrorist on the lam and once the support fell off, they were doomed. Same thing happening here.

However, I am almost glad this is starting to blow up (pardon the pun) because it is bringing attention to this jihadist and immigration problem that have been allowed ot be ignored and minimized thus far. A backlash is what needs to happen as much as our lefty friends hand-wring over it.

accept before we do what's necessary and go Roman on this blight - no
two stones left standing together, salting the earth, etc... the whole
Cartago Delenda Est thing. Apparently 9-11 wasn't enough, what with 3000
innocent people being incinerated and 6 or 7 years later us electing a
President with the middle name Hussein. Go figure.
But whenever that
casualty threshold is reached...when we finally reach the point of
saying Enough and No More, the first task at hand will be to clean house
here at home and deal with the domestic enemies that have undermined
and nearly ruined what is the greatest - even with its blemishes - most
benevolent power in history, the United States. And then we roll up our

329 "it is about an hour from germany where there used to be many US AFB and USA posts"

By the way, on the subject of former US military bases abroad, several more are about to enter into "former" status.

Upchuck Hagel, on his way out the door, has announced that the US will not renew its leases on bases in the UK at Mildenhall, Alconbury and Molesworth. Only Lakenheath escapes the ax.

If you want to fight expeditionary fights in the rest of the world, one key insight is that a lot of the rest of the world is constituted of places that are difficult to reach effectively and in a timely way without intermediate basing locations.

Of course, since a key unvoiced Obama goal is to cripple the American military's ability to engage in expeditionary battle abroad, shutting down as many of those intermediate bases as possible before 2017 plays right into the overall plan.

331 House Republicans' $1.1 trillion spending bill includes budget cuts to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) that could make it harder for the agency to implement some of the most complex parts of ObamaCare.

President Obama on Thursday voiced support for the "cromnibus" bill in part because it doesn't slash funding for his signature healthcare law.

But the funding bill's $350 million in budget cuts to the IRS will further burden the already cash-strapped agency.

... apparently, the IRS got a 3.1% cut in budget and the world is ending as they slash services and declare a general state of chaos.

We could either: 1) Fire all the management, get new management.

2) Every taxpayer should get 1 year in every ten to pay no taxes so that the IRS isn't over worked.

I like both but I'm leaning to #2

It occurs to me that Somalia is something like that. There is no real government there to object and it borders on Djbouti. The French can easily arrest anybody who is on their watch list, fly them to Djbouti and escort them at gun point across the border into Somalia. This can also work for all the friends and families of the jihadis, at least the friends and relatives who don't roll over and inform for the security services.

Given the chaotic conditions and tribal societies in Somalia, things will probably not be particularly pleasant for people showing up there with nothing but the clothes on their back or, perhaps a couple of suitcases.

"So on Thursday, President Obama will call on Congress to pass the Healthy Families Act, which would allow millions of working Americans to earn up to seven days a year of paid sick time - and call on states and cities to pass similar laws. The President will outline a new plan to help states create paid leave programs, and provide new funding through the Department of Labor for feasibility studies that will help other states and municipalities figure out the best way to implement programs of their own. And the President will sign a Presidential Memorandum that will ensure federal employees have access to at least 6 weeks of paid sick leave when a new child arrives and propose that Congress offer 6 weeks of paid administrative leave as well."

489 AllenG:

I think it is this way. Obama and Co. have never been interested in foreign policy* thinking it a distraction from their main interest, continuing down the path blazed by LBJ.

Their problem is that Obama is a terrible legislative politician. He can't convince an Eskimo to buy a space heater. He relied on Pelosi and Reid to push everything through. After two years they stalled, but could get an occasional concession wrung out. After 2014 he is legislatively dead and he knows it. Heck, even GWB could cajole a majority for something he needed, like war funding.

So what does Obama do? What can he do? Make these announcements that are aimed to the remains of his base, snip around the edges with memoranda that do not actually change a statute or make something actually legal when it isn't.** Do you think his majesty would lower himself to dickering and dealing like a filthy lesser? No - hence the meaningless decrees.

*Foreign policy is the one area a president can really move around in. Too bad obama isn't interested. (Or maybe good.)
**Saying "I will not prosecute now" in no way removes the threat of future prosecution because hey - promises and expiration dates. And if I were an employer I would keep that well in mind.

491 It's when they eliminated the whole "endowed by our creator" part that things went pair-shaped. They believe they have rights *to* things instead of rights from things.

There's a some truth to that. I mean, we could define either side as the one believing in "rights to" vs "rights from."

The big difference is where we believe Rights come from (Nature and/or Nature's God), and where *they* believe they come from (the end of a gun).

My right to free association is given by the simple fact I am a human being with self determination. That's what makes it a "right." No one "gave" it to me, and no one can take it away.

Their "right to a remunerative job" is granted by the power (read: monopoly on violence) of the United States government. It was given- it can therefore be taken away.

Actually, the British guns at Singapore could fire in 360 degrees and they could have fired on the Japanese attacking from the landward side. The problem is that all of the ammunition for the big guns was armor piercing for use against capital ships. It would penetrate a few dozen feet into the ground before the delayed fuze would set off the relatively small explosive charge.

The Japanese arrived at the outskirts of Singapore nearly out of food and ammunition but they promised that unless the city was surrendered immediately they would pull another Rape of Nanking on Singapore. General Percival bought the story and surrendered. He could have definitely held out longer but the British had no air forces and Japanese aircraft sank the Prince of Wales and Repulse suggesting that Singapore would be cut off and not receiving any relief by sea.
