1. The Islam of Mohammed more than likely developed naturally by interactions of Jewish and Christian heretics out in the desert with a touch of Zoroastrianism and some old style pagan beliefs thrown in for good measure. In other words, it wasn't revealed to him by Gabriel but was probably around before he was even born.
2. Mohammed probably did exist but more than likely saw himself as a cousin of the Jews and what he himself believed would probably be recognized by us today as mostly Jewish. If there was any religious component to what he was doing he most likely viewed it as liberation of his cousins in Jerusalem. In reality it was probably just traditional fighting among the Arab tribes who then figured out that the Romans and Persians (both of whom used to employ them as federate troops) were pretty weak and it was now a good time to get some loot. They ended up with an empire largely by accident and good timing, not because Mohammed had a vision quest.
3. Islam as we know it was created decades after Mohammed's death by the caliph Abd al Malik as a reaction to internal strife. This is when Mohammed was basically retconned into the ideal man as a tool for quelling revolution and establishing uniformity within the caliphate.
4. Islam as we know it is based upon the hadiths and the biographies of Mohammed which began to be produced by writers under Abd al Malik to justify the absence of pretty much any actual, verifiable information about Mohammed in the Koran. Because Mohammed was now supposed to be the ideal man there had to be examples of what he did or judgments that he made. As such, things had to be invented since most of the answers required knowledge about what Mohammed said or thought about the topic at hand; in other words, "Stuff Mohammed Said, part 24,136." It's from the hadiths we get the particular ridiculousness of Islam, such as what to do with a goat that has been violated or what direction to face when you fart, etc. There are thousands upon thousands of these pronouncements which were at first supposedly transmitted by people whose best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who heard Mohammed say it at 31 Flavors last night. Or as it would be known in court, hearsay. Without the hadiths Islam as we know it collapses, which is why actual scholarly research into the veracity of the hadiths cannot be tolerated.
There's a lots more eyeopening stuff in there but you can read it if you want. It's a pretty interesting book if you like history.

If you ever get the opportunity, take a visit to Romania. You can still see graphic evidence of what communism brings to a country.
I spent most of my time in the southern part of Romania, about a 2 1/2 hour ride from Bucharest. For well over half that trip from the airport all you could see in every direction was mostly empty fields where crops should have been growing. Under the big C, all the lands belonged to the state and the peasants were given everything they needed to grow food by which I mean seed, horse drawn carts and plows and hand tools.
They are busy (as busy as a bureaucracy can be) redistributing the land back to the people now but the old timers are lost. They literally have no idea what to do without someone telling them what and how. What you see if a few acres being farmed by families using the same horse carts and hand tools.
And onions. Metric shit tons of onions for sale by the side of the road. Not much else but onions. And horse carts mingled with cars on the roads.
But if you go to the north, up into Transylvania, you would think you were in Austria or Germany. Lovely little villages with a distinctly alpine feel. Because this is where the communist leaders lived.
My customer was a little younger than me and grew up under communism. He has vivid memories of lining up for the families monthly allotment of bread and butter, X amount per person and not a crumb more. Most books were not allowed and neighbors would turn in neighbors for violations. And every public area was bugged.
Fascinating place.

And most people, including very successful businessmen, speak on a 6th - 8th grade level. That would be because 6th - 8th grade proficiency in English is sufficient.
If you want to know at what level they *can* read, you have to look at what is assigned, and how they do on assessments based on those assignments.
I read a lot of YA fiction because I happen to like it. I'm sure that lowers my "average reading level," too. Do we really think that I *can't* read at a higher level than that?

If you go back and read what the left was writing in the late 80s, for example, you'll see that they were insistent that communism had flaws, but was at least as viable as capitalism and any notions that the USSR was going away were dangerous fantasies.
And then it went away...and the left had no answers....
The problem is that they still needed an ideology that empowered them - the largely academic class. That gave government control of the economy and society. And that was anti-religion, since religion serves as a source of morality in opposition to the state.
And then they rediscovered fascism (which remember the left had been fond of in the 30s). And that is the explanation for why they are what they are today.

After the Shah fled there was a coalition govt. formed that included the socialists but the Ayatollah Khomeini was clearly at its head. All the smiles and cooperation ended bout 10 minutes after the photo ops for the papers. The mullahs and socialists quickly started kill___ each other but the mullahs had the upper hand and control of the govt. While the socialists engaged in some bombings and assassinations that damaged the govt. slightly, hundreds and thousands of their comrades were rounded up and summarily shot. The revolution did not turn out well for the Iranian leftists.

Then you'd be wrong. Vickers hasn't been in the limelight much at since the Parliament Hill shootings ceased to be current news. The position of Sergeant At Arms is scarcely a bully pulpit. Most of the time, the public is quite unaware that the job even exists.
Vickers will probably get more publicity, on an on-going basis, in his new role than he ever had as Sergeant At Arms, aside from the events of that one day. As Ambassador, he will be our Government's spokesman in Ireland, and anything he says or does will, potentially, be news both here and there.
