Florida Representative Daniel Webster Now Running for Speaker of the House?
Voting Starts Any Minute Now

Webster is known as something of a moderate so he would presumably be acceptable to the wing currently claiming that we daren't reject Boehner, for everyone else is Teh Crazy.

Oh, he's a "secret candidate:"

Apparently they've been counting on him as a Stalking Horse for this vote but didn't want to tip their hand too early -- Boehner is known to retaliate against members considered disloyal.

Why just yesterday Steve King (one of Teh Crazies who think we can do better than Boehner) was plumping Daniel Webster as a plausible Speaker.

Representative Steve King (R., Iowa) wants conservative lawmakers to rally around Florida representative Daniel Webster in a last-minute bid to oust House speaker John Boehner (R., Ohio).

Webster "understands that the role of any leader is to bring out the will of the group, not to impose their will on the group," King tells National Review Online, adding that he has been discussing the idea with Webster for over two years...

Webster was elected in 2010 with the help of Jeb Bush, who described him as "a true conservative and one of the most principled people I’ve ever met."

The Vote: Is on CSPAN, momentarily.

Vote's On: I have no idea how to tally this.

Meadows votes for Not Bohener. This was a vote the Not Boehner people had hoped for, but did not quite have.

17 Republican votes have gone to Not Boehner. We're in the N's. 29 sinks Boehner, but it's looking unlikely.

This "Daniel Webster" play did not attract many votes at all. Only two that I can remember.

Whoops, Webster just got a vote, from Nugent, another vote the Not Boehner coalition was hoping for, but couldn't count on.

Up to 20. They're nine away, but they're in the R's now.

Er, hello?

Huge success at what again exactly?

Stopping (or even, hell, slowing down) which parts of the Obama revolution again exactly?

As for the idea that Boehner is some amazingly popular figure who is galvanizing ordinary apolitical Joes and Janes to vote Republican due to his brilliant mind and magnetic personality, one of the polling honchos over at PPP pointed out last year that more than half the country don't know who the hell John Boehner even *is*. He has 43% name recognition or some such thing.

Baby is fine. There was a scare with heart rate but our doc is a pro had forewarned us and was ready with forceps and Mrs. Tsr was ready to take one for her kid. All was well if not dramatic! (any time there is a instrument delivery they have a Nicu team in the room. Thankfully they weren't necessary beyond a exam they do in all cases.

Mama's fine, usual types of injury. But she's s trooper and already happily bonding.

Yup, I had the satisfaction of voting for Webster to oust Grayson. Since then they've both in different districts now and Mica is my rep. I know of small business owners who are impressed that Webster sends them letters tellling them that they are appreciated. He used to be Speaker of the Florida House of Reps, so he's got that experience at least.

120 What's funny/sad is Republicans are coming in with the biggest majority in nearly a 100 years, and can you name one thing they plan on doing with it?

The leadership can't even promise they'll defund Obama's illegal amnesty! Even liberal law professors are on record basically saying what Obama is trying to do is illegal and violates the separation of powers.

The majorities Republicans have in Congress have zero to do with the leadership and everything to do with the reaction of the American people against Obama and his agenda.

I'll say this about Newt, you at least knew the GOP agenda for the Congress in the 1990's.

Boehner has been a horrible Speaker. The worst I can ever remember. There has been no vision, no strategy, no real fights.
Posted by: McAdams

As a tactician, it is hard to argue the case that Boehner has been ineffective or short-sighted. At the risk of sounding heretical, the GOP base could do with a little bit more caution like that embraced by its current crop of House leaders.

Boehner has often angered his right flank, and he may have been unnecessarily antagonistic at times, but he has also advanced the causes to which conservatives profess loyalty more than any overzealous inquisition against moderates ever will.

So, he's got the coveted HotAir Seal of Approval.

Posted by: Penfold at January 06, 2015 12:12 PM (Fbt5B)

128 Boehner is an incredibly vicious and ruthless infighter against Republican opposition. He kicks internal challengers off committees; he gets would-be primary opponents fired from their day jobs.

Then he goes into "negotiations" with Obama and the Democrats and immediately folds like a cheap card table. Not a whit of that prior aggression to be seen.

What the hell is it with the GOPe that they display this toxic pattern over and over again? It was the same business with McQueeg and the Mittbot.

209 Of all Boehner's sins, the worst was when he cut the deal for the 2 year Bush tax extension after the 2010 elections.

Had Boehner and Republicans said "make the tax cuts permanent or no deal" Obama would have been a 1 term President. Without question.

A big tax increase on the middle class would have sent him packing in 2012. Instead, Boehner listened to the Chamber of Congress crowd that just wanted any short term relief rather than destroying the President.

As I pointed out the other day, the Beltway bunch proudly told the country that the deficit for FY2014 was "way down" to "only" $480B.

Except, as I pointed out, if you take the publicly available raw debt numbers and you crunch them for the start of FY14 and the end of FY14, the debt actually increased by $1.076T.

"End of year adjustment" again, no doubt.

Cancel the balloon drop:

Update: As Politico reports, at least 12 House Democrats are skipping the speaker vote to attend former New York governor Mario Cuomo's (D) funeral. That increases the threshold for pushing Boehner to a second ballot to at least 35, making him even safer.

That 35 number, we would emphasize, is a minimum. Boehner needs a majority, so if some members don't vote, Boehner's threshold for winning will be lower than the usual 218 votes as it was in 2013, when it was 214 votes. So if some of these Boehner opponents vote for nobody as Labrador and Mulvaney did in 2013 that hurts Boehner less.

Darlin, it's because we're cowboys/girls.

We hold *everyone* accountable.

Democrats don't even hold each other accountable. Why?

They're terrified of failure.

A good man or a good woman sees failure as what it is: a necessary learning experience.

A liberal is repairing a combine (hah... as if... but bear with me) and takes a nasty gash to the arm. He goes off and cries about how the combine manufacturer failed him. Uses the government health care system to fix his stupidty

A conservative is repairing a combing and takes a nasty gash to the arm and stitches it up himself and is pissed that he didn't see that coming and reevaluates his actions. It was his fault.

These two different paths of thinking are what separates us from the weak and helpless.

Unfortunately, the weak and helpless have power. a la Boehner,

He's a shitbag

250 No, she put herself under someone's care, and they betrayed that trust.

Knowing a surgeon or two, I'm going to have object- citing facts not in evidence.

Right at the moment, there is no evidence of Malpractice. When you're cutting inside someone's body, sometimes the wrong thing gets cut- completely accidentally, and even with all due precautions being taken.

She was taken from her child(ren?) and family. We do not know why, or even (aside from the most basic facts) how. Casting blame at this point does nothing good for her family, and could actually be harmful.

Indeed, if they were taking her appendix, then she would likely have been dead without the surgery in the first place. That may sound callous, but it is an important thing to remember. This isn't someone who died from having their tonsils removed, and it's not (from what we know) an instance of a doctor sewing her up with tools still inside.

277 Except, as I pointed out, if you take the publicly available raw debt numbers and you crunch them for the start of FY14 and the end of FY14, the debt actually increased by $1.076T.

"End of year adjustment" again, no doubt.
Posted by: torquewrench at January 06, 2015 12:30 PM (noWW6)

****

I did a little research on that a while back to see where the delta came from. Turns out that debt ceiling showdown in 2013 caused a bunch of money to get moved around and shortly after the start of FY 2014 they basically borrowed a crap load of money and "charged" it to 2013 instead of 2014. Except I never saw where the 2013 deficit number ever went up to account for it - maybe it did, or maybe that money somehow didn't make on the books officially for either year.

It's a real challenge, but it seems the Dems want Boehner calling the shots (wonder why that would be...) and many of them are skipping the vote. I bet a bunch more vote "present" or abstain all together, making the number needed for him to win even lower.

Our only real chance to remove Boehner was during the primaries. I don't remember if he just didn't have a primary challenger, or if he did, but said challenger never gained much traction.

This is the part where I tell the story about being asked by one of my psychopathic former bosses to convert some video from a tape into digital format. I said sure no problem and then he told me that he needed all 45 minutes of it done before the focus group that started in 20 minutes. I told him that was not possible to do. He told me I had to do it. I told him that, sorry, not physically possible to do.

He rolled his eyes at me and told me of course I could. Just hit fast forward.

Did de Blasio visit with cameras (use the injured cop as a prop) or come on his own?

De Blasio is also just making it worse by instructing everyone to just ignore those cops who are protesting. Funny, some protests are more equal than others, huh? I mean, he should just tolerate the inconvenience of the police turning their backs because it takes challenging power to bring about change. Or so Obama told us not long ago...

He told me I had to do it. I told him that, sorry, not physically possible to do. He rolled his eyes at me and told me of course I could. Just hit fast forward. I just stared at him in response. Yeah I hope so too. Look its great for smart phones and tablets, because of their size, and you don't want to be lugging around peripherals. And for laptops its kind of borderline in being effective. But for actual desktops? Just no. Don't you get ticked off when you notice smears and finger prints on your monitor, and now you want to make that a guarantee?

697 The bad news is that Boehner was the best of a weak field in 2011 and that still holds true today because it takes several terms for any newcomer to build the various networks needed to get elected Speaker.

The good news is that the class of 2010 grows in skill and relationships with each passing day.

Trey Gowdy didn't vote because his flight was cancelled and he couldn't make it. His statement of support for Boehner is a masterful non statement. It's a tough job, it takes years of preparation and no one came out against Boehner during the conference in November, blah, blah, blah. It's all about the institution and devoid of any personal praise.

Boehner is going to be looking over his shoulder a lot in the next two years.
