Weekend (Sort of) Travel Thread: Concert Hall Edition [Y-not]

OK, this is not strictly speaking "travel," but it is semi-related...

Mr Y-not and I scored some free tickets to the Utah Symphony, so last night we attended their New Year's in Vienna concert. Apparently, New Year's Eve is a "BFD" in Vienna (something I had not realized), so this concert was an homage to that.

Ever the party poopers, BBC News informs us that it has a "dark history."

Well, it does:

The annual performance of waltzes, polkas and marches by Johann Strauss, his three sons and their contemporaries, seems timeless. Everything about the event, from its formality, its charmingly contrived humour, its home in the almost overpoweringly rich Golden Hall of the Musikverein, suggest something that dates back to the heady days of the 19th Century.

In fact the history of the New Year's Day concert is rather more recent. It was a Nazi invention.

The first ever performance took place on New Year's Eve 1939, raising money for the Winterhilfswerk, an annual fundraising drive masterminded by the National Socialist Party to buy fuel for the needy in the coldest months of the year.

When the Strausses were alive, the Vienna Philharmonic was a little sniffy about their music. Why would such an advanced and adventurous orchestra want to play popular tunes?

They started taking it more seriously in the late 1920s - but the idea of a seasonal Strauss gala really gained traction when the Nazi party's cultural commissars hit upon the idea of a unifying event that could be broadcast live across the Third Reich. The concert moved to New Year's Day in 1941.

HitlerBunny.jpg

"I ruined everything I touched... but at least I didn't eat this dog."

That's a shame. To be fair, I suppose I can't fault the BBC for pointing it out... (and I should be grateful that they didn't somehow insert House Majority Whip Scalise into the article!)

In any event, back to the concert we attended...

The venue was Salt Lake City's Abravanel Hall. It has a striking lobby, complete with a huge Chihuly sculpture.

Chihuly1.jpg

Although the building is striking, as a concert venue it is not my favorite. The balcony seating (which we generally prefer, especially for viewing an opera) is awkward, with very steep and rather narrow walkways to get to the seats. They're also difficult to access owing to the building having an inadequate number of elevators.

The main floor is fine -- once you get into your seat. But there is no center aisle and the rows are very long, so it can be quite annoying to be seated. And, if you're in anything other than the center of the row, you invariably have people crawling over you. Sadly, for some unknown reason, the ushers allow late-arrivals to go to their seats during the performance, so that really stinks. /curmudgeon mode off

All that said, we really enjoyed last night's concert. They chose a very upbeat set of musical selections. It was quite a festive way to kick off the New Year!

Here are a few of our favorites from last night's concert (these particular videos were not performed by the USUO):

Johann Strauss - Im Krapfenwaldl

This polka written by Johann Strauss is a delight, owing to the use of various pipes and whistles that mimick bird calls hence it's common name, The Cuckoo Polka.

H.C. Lumbye - Champagne Galop

This fun piece by Danish composer Lumbye features the sound of a champagne bottle popping throughout the piece. (The instrument used last night looked like a long wooden tube with a cork in it.) Very whimsical.

Finally, you'll all recognize this one:

Johannes Brahms - Hungarian Dance No.5

Beautiful!

There is something about going to a live musical performance, whether it be the symphony or pop music or ballet or the opera, that is so special. I don't care how good your audio system is -- live music rocks!

I'm hoping someday we can persuade tmi3rd, who is an expert in this stuff, to do some posts on opera and the like. I discovered opera very late in life and am no expert, but I love it and think more people should give it a chance.

Open thread to talk about your holiday travels or to tell us what you did for New Year's Eve or to describe your favorite concert venues... or pretty much any other damned (non-political) thing you want!

Chrysler Hall here in my hometown had a great glass exhibit a few years back with some of Dale's work displayed.
Not sure if they have it permanently or if it was on loan, but his work is quite striking in person.

14 Nazi Germany also invented the ballistic missile (V-2), the cruise missile (V-1), the jet airplane (Me-262) and (I think) the limited-access divided highway, but I've never seen a lefty apologize for watching a moon-landing, riding in a jet airliner, or driving on an Interstate highway. (I mean, apologize because they were invented by Nazis - they do occasionally apologize for burning all that oil.)

My personal favorite as a performer goes back to my childhood as a piano student. One of the venues that we frequently used for performances was the Temple Adas Israel, the local synagogue. By far the best acoustics of any building I've ever played in. http://tinyurl.com/orc65uu

27 Although the locals seem to prefer Abravanel Hall, we like the old Capitol Theater in downtown Salt Lake City, especially for opera. It's small and there are really no bad seats.

They just did a renovation as part of a building effort to support Ballet West, but I have to say I was a little disappointed by results. They addressed HVAC issues (that iirc visiting performers kind of demanded b/c of our climate issues here - being dry etc), but the seating was not improved in any way I could detect. So it is very cramped, even for five foot two me.

We had so much family turmoil this past year that we did not renew our subscription to the opera. I wasn't sure if we could plan ahead. But really I'd be quicker to renew if the seats were better.

Die Fledermaus is usually de rigeur on New Year's Eve in Vienna, according to my mom--family lived there post WW II while dad was in the occupation army working with DPs, and two of my siblings were born there. It apparently has the tradition of a concert within, as part of the New Year's festivities of the opera party.

It's a very small venue as well (2200 seats IIRC), so it adds to the intimacy of the performance.

My recommendations: Do not visit during CMA Music Fest, unless huge crowds are your thing, or you are willing to put up with the crowds to experience the inane amounts of live shows. Do visit during the week so that you can experience "Opry at the Ryman" and not have to deal with the usual weekend party types in downtown. Unless, of course, you want to party downtown in the Lower Broadway tourist trap honkey-tonks.

Also, try to catch a performance at the Schermerhorm Symphony Center in downtown Nashville.

Another non-touristy spot to catch great live music in Nashville is the Station Inn.

Yes, because I was l;ucky enough in high school to go along when my mom and aunt took my grandmother back to her native village in Burgenland to visit, because two of her nrothers and one sister-in-law were still alive (grandma immigrated from the Austrian side of the border, and grandpa from the Hungarian, when it was still The Empire, pre WW I).

Very very strange, after seeing family photos of my dad in fatigues and pinks, to see black-bordered photos of young boys in Wehrmacht uniform on cottage walls--the area she was from is a farming community near the Hungarian border (Andau, of Michener fame. They still didn't talk about the revolution when I was there in the 70s, because there were still Russian guardtowers and barbed wire at the ends of their sunflower fields).

Mom was not allowed to go visit her mother's family when they lived there--the family had to come to Vienna, because Andau was in the Russian zone, and every time mom applied for a pass, she got grilled on her maiden name and "who are you spying for?" and dad would have to come get her.

I met my mother's first cousin, late 40s, but looked about a thousand, because when they came through after the pact with Stalin was negated by the invasion, and took all the old men and little boys to send to Russia, he was a teenager, and captured at Stalingrad, along with his elderly uncle, my grandmother's oldest brother.

That brother had been taken off the farm and sent to the Russian front during WW I, and captured and sent to Siberia. He and my mom's cousin were sent to Siberia after Stalingrad, and repatriated after the war, at least mom's cousin was: Uncle Johann did survive the second trip top Siberia.

They showed me pictures of Josef (cousin) when he came home, and he looked exactly the same as he did in his late forties when I met him: face folded into a million lines, and total resting picture of pain, and a thousand years old. He cracked a smile pretty easily though, and was a very nice guy with a great family.

Many many stories, yes.

110 Hitler expressed doubts about the cyanide capsules he had received through Heinrich Himmler's SS.[24] To verify the capsules' potency, Hitler ordered Dr. Werner Haase to test them on his dog Blondi, and the dog died as a result.[25] Hitler became completely inconsolable.[26]
According to a report commissioned by Joseph Stalin and based on eye-witness accounts, Hitler's dog-handler, Feldwebel Fritz Tornow,
took Blondi's pups and shot them in the garden of the bunker complex on
April 30, after Hitler and Eva Braun committed suicide. He also killed
Eva Braun's two dogs, Frau Gerda Christian's dogs and his own dachshund.

133 My first and only symphony experience was while visiting my niece who lives in Doha. The theater was small enough that we are fairly close to the stage. They were paying homage to Richard Strauss, composer of 2001, A Space Odyssey. Then they featured an artist who is a master oud player, an instrument i had never heard before. Then there was more folk music and the whole experience was wonderful. Coincidentally, age that trip, i went to Italy to visit my daughter and we made a short trip to Garmisch, where Richard Strauss was from. I felt like such a smarty pants when my son in law wondered who he was because there was going to be a festival honoring him, i was able to tell him. A month earlier and i would have been wondering right along with him!

The Barber of Seville is an excellent opera for the first-time opera-goer. It's both a great opera and accessible. The other opera that I recommend for the first-time opera-goer is Carmen, for the same reasons.

I can't believe that I am going to defend Hitler but here goes. Yes, indeed. Hitler did a lot of worse things than killing his dog but consider the alternative. The deaths of the dogs were relatively painless. Had they been released to wander around in the ruins of Berlin they would have starved to death, fed on corpses or been eaten by the starving inhabitants of Berlin. If there are circumstances in which it is a kindness to put an animal down, these circumstances would seem to qualify.

283 My other interesting theater experience was visiting inside the colesium in Verona, Italy which is still used as a venue for concerts and operas.

The Colosseum, in Rome, is the only amphitheater that carries that name. Actually, it's a nickname. Originally the Flavian Amphitheater (named after the Flavian Dyasty that built it), it became known as the Colosseum because of the Colossus of Nero (later re-branded to the Colossus of Sol) that stood adjacent. Both the Flavian Amphitheater and the Colossus stood on the grounds of Nero's gigantic palace complex, the Domus Aurea.

Every other similar structure is just an amphitheater, Verona's included.

284 I imagine Huckleberry probably has some greedy wanna-be campaign managers puffing him up.

Hrm, so you're saying that it's a good thing that he's running, & that it would be a good thing to pay his campaign manager something like 2.5m/yr, yes?!

286 MisHum,
Are people picking on men today?

Politico link from Drudge said Rand Paul or his PAC bought up a number of Huck domain names. It sounds like what Mitt did in 2007 & kept up. I erased all those old bookmarks I had saved.

296 I saw a beautiful production of Salome at the Hawaii Opera Theater years ago, with sets and costumes designed by artist Thomas Woodruff. The stage was like some trippy hallucinatory night garden with leering purple orchids and spider webs.

When Salome kissed the severed head of John the Baptist the teen girl seated in front of me went "Eeeewwww!". Now that's art.

They keep trying to sell the city, especially downtown, as once of those urban loft hipster colonies.

After a winter interview, I was offered a job there. Declined. Had a friend at CMU, she hated it, especially the gloomy winters.

307 Our family was in Melbourne, Australia for NYE once. My Mom and sister wanted to watch the fireworks, but Dad and I chose to go to the Pops concert. First time I ever had seats in the choir loft. Was an amazing experience to watch the conductor from the perspective of the performer and not be a performer. We were all given streamers for midnight and one of the best group sing alongs of Auld Lang Syne I've ever had the pleasure of participating in. Hugging and celebrating the new year with people from around the world. The year before we were in Bali and my sister was kissed by a group of "Italian Astronauts". I myself had made the horrific mistake of eating pork in a muslim country (I had stupidly assumed since Bali is mostly Hindu it would fine -- it was not.) and spend the holiday wretchedly ill.

309 @152 Y-Not

My house was real loud.
My next door neighbors are from Cleveland. I'm sure they were loud.
But we live in NW Indiana so not so much in the neighborhood.
One kid was in NOLA and texted us the whole game.
The other kid lives in Europe so he got up at 5am their time to skype and watch with us. Pretty cool.

Me and hubby are actually still pretty much in shock that we won!

310 Part of the reason I particularly like to listen to Shostakovich is to hear his struggles with the Soviet authorities in his music. His light opera Cheryomushki is a gas to listen to, and must have given some of the party bosses heartburn.
