"Reagan talked a lot about government being the problem, but I don't know that he actually convinced people to rank 'Government' as the nation's number one problem."
Something that has always bugged me about Reagan is that as a serial candidate, he was a constant fount of facts and studies and anecdotes about government stupidity and government waste -- but then once finally elected, as a sitting President, he backed way off on that line of criticism. I have heard that attributed to multiple causes. One was that Reagan felt that the office needed to be protected and strengthened after the disrepute into which Carter had brought it. He wouldn't do certain things which he thought were beneath the dignity of the Presidency, and being too acidic a critic in his public comments was apparently one. Another is that the voters had saddled him with an oppositional Democratic Congress who loved them some Big Government, and were inclined to cooperate grudgingly with Reagan on some things, just so long as he didn't gore any of their sacred cows or interrupt the flow of pork into their troughs. And the third reason given is that Reagan pragmatically decided that the external threat of hostile expansionist Soviet communism was more immediate and proximally dangerous than the internal threat of the expanding welfare/regulatory state. Whatever the actual reasons, it's a genuine shame that the Great Communicator largely quit communicating about the genuine evils and problems of leviathan government. Especially at the time when he had the proverbial bully pulpit from which to speak. Posted by: torquewrench at January 02, 2015 05:41 PM (noWW6) 35

I think in the years to come we'll realize we owe a debt of gratitude to the narcissistic obsession that is Barack Obama.
His relentless pursuit of outdated and downright inimical policies mouthed and plead for over the years by Liberal/Progressives and the resultant destruction and chaos that has occurred because of them has brought it to the attention of many who never realized how destructive and dangerous those ideas could be in reality. Watching an avalanche in a distant country is one thing. Having one fall on your head is another. The close up perspective gives you the opportunity to fully grasp the terrifying aspects of them. It seems to me that whenever there is a shift in public opinion such as this, that:
1. The reasons people are dissatisfied with government are along the lines of "government isn't doing enough for me." rather than "I can make responsible decisions for myself and my family better than the government can." AND 2. Whatever proposed solutions emerge have the result of MORE government rather than BETTER government. YCMV Posted by: Seamus Muldoon at January 02, 2015 05:49 PM (NeFrd) 59

I read this with a certain amount of amusement. Brandon Sanderson, who is a fantasy author that's been mentioned a time or two around here, was having trouble writing his novel 'Shadows of Self'. So instead of writing 'Shadows', he wrote the sequel - 'Bands of Mourning'. Then he went back and wrote 'Shadows'. Both manuscripts have been submitted, and his publisher (Tor) plans to release Bands three months after Shadows. And for his fans - Shadows is the sequel to 'Alloy of Law'. Not the poll itself, but what it means. People always say, spending is too high. Then ask them, well should we cut these 5 things and they say, FUCK NO!! You can't cut these things, but those other 5 things that don't affect me at all. Same with this type of poll. In the abstract, people think govt is too big. RE: @34, Torque..
I think what happened to Reagan is instructive. He had precious few allies once elected. He was NOT the GOP establishment choice... they basically forced him to take GHWB on as veep. He could only do so much as he was fighting against his own bench, the Donks and the MSM. Even "conservatives" in the House were not on board with the Gipper. I think it's not a reflection on Reagan as much as a reflection on the built-in train-wreck that Washington DC is and that , institutionally, it will fight with everything it has to thwart outsiders who deem to diminish it or curtail the influence peddling that goes on there. Bigger fish to fry with the Soviets. He nearly was assassinated early on. So much good happened, but really, he could only do so much. He was plagued by insiders leaking to the press and outright slander and ridicule. One man and a handful of loyal cabinet members can only do so much when every knife was out. And what Bush 41 did as soon as he was elected proves TO ME, my insticts from the day are correct. ( and I was 18 when Reagan was elected and followed all this stuff close back in the day.. ) D.C. is the problem. Reagan pointed it out. Obama proves the point. Hopefully, it is sinking in like criticism never will. Hopefully, we'll emerge from this administration intact and emboldened to fix the problem(s) of an out of control Federal Leviathan. #15, Seamus - outstanding! Not pithy and catchy, obviously, but catches the essence of the thing. Infotainvernment.
Leeeetle problem here, though, my friendsh. America as conceived and as imperfectly yet gloriously realized for generations, requires Americans. To mean the historically distintive mindset and base values (WRT guvamin, self reliance, liberty, etc.) that made America possible (not citizenship per se). Of course it varies wildly across the land, but in the dominant coasts and urban areas, I would say the key distinctive American mindset elements are rarely seen any more. There is simply no more default common sense, or sense of restraint or humility, or respect for others' freedom, nor, increasingly any real understanding of basic economics. It's all bigotry, self-dealing, regulatory capture and rent-seeking (out of control now, obviously). Not by all, but by enough that it's about over. A unionized firefighter, a 3rd generation welfare cheat, a pathetic "teacher" produced by the country's insanely degraded educ. establishment, a wealthy "green" entrepreneur/Dem donor, a well-meaning but NPR-stupid "educated" coastal clueless member whose entire (entire) political outlook is built on myth and resentment and baseless self-righteousness - that's a coalition I don't see being overcome. You might say they actually have "different" "politics" - but no really, not in a bottom-line sense they don't. Not any more. That's once consequence of govt. explosion far out of its historic limits. Minor factor, but add in the complacent and not very savvy element that has the right outlook and mindset, but cannot recognize the severity of the problem, and is additionally crippled by tribal affiliation/sports fan attachment (GOP "loyalists" and apologists). People who don't understand politics is a means to an end, not an end in itself (as it is for prosperous libs who are rarely directly affected by the disasters they inflict on the country). We have a good representation of those right here in the comments sections. Personnel is policy in the fed guvamint, and populace is politics. I see a problem with the populace. Funny, I lost several government jobs because, uh, they were no longer needed (one case that decision was taken externally, the other time I made it). Probably a freakish, alien outlier tail-of-the-bell-curve thing, but I actually saw public service as, well, public service. Not "my" job.
That was not an unusual thing a while back. Still exists in the military and a few other sectors. But generally? Uh uh. Gov. Walker has been an incredible success at being a real, good, governor - improving his state on almost every front, in ways that governors can (OK, he is basically eliminating artificial disastrous crap that was erected by others, but still). Gov. Kasich did OK with many aspects of improving the situation in Ohio early in his first term. What was the Iraqi oil-filled-moat surrounded by mines backed up by Scuds with VX gas that neither one could cross or even touch (well, Kasich did, and got burned)? Right. Public sector union parasitism when it wears a "public safety" uniform. Given not-unreasonable (tactially) slippery slope thinking, it's really the same problem as teacher union or prison guard union parasitism, i.e. tackling them will require all of them, not just some of them (Walker got lucky in a way, you'd never pull of his tactic in CA or NY, for example). I'm going to come to the defense of the Postal Service. First they are actually authorized in the Constitution (Art 1 Sect and they mostly do their job pretty well...well enough, in fact, that they are the final leg of some of the UPS and FedEx deliveries. They would actually be making money if it wasn't for the unfunded pension liability...of the rest of the US.gov (IIRC they would be able to fund their own pensions out of revenues but the treasury takes some of what they earn to fund other programs...big surprise there). They get a bad rap, but the USPS and the US Military are two things that actually work pretty well, all things considered.

Posted by: rhomboid at January 02, 2015 06:46 PM (afQnV) Oh, the USPS has expanded exponentially, too, but the biggest problem that I have seen is the expansion of "czars" and such, and the way the EPA, et al, create law without legislation (yes, it's legal, sort of, for varying degrees of legal, but legal doesn't mean right). And why, exactly, does any agency outside the FBI need armed agents? Anything requiring law enforcement should be the bailiwick of the FBI IMO. "They get a bad rap, but the USPS and the US Military are two things that actually work pretty well, all things considered."
Perhaps it's just because our local USPS service is the worse that I have ever experienced in this country that I look at the USPS with a jaded eye. Packages lost, misrouted, and marked as delivered two days before they actually arrive a our house. A paycheck that was returned to an employer, stamped as "Vacant" by the USPS causes me issues. A letter carrier that had to be directed to wear a uniform, and stop swearing constantly on his phone headset while walking the neighborhood in the presence of children helps to contribute to that feeling. When my Amazon shipments go Smartpost, and USPS does the final mile, it goes pear shaped every time. In out particular community of 1777 homes, USPS is universally agreed to suck. Your mileage may vary. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at January 02, 2015 06:53 PM (Kr/1Z) 143

Posted by: Carol at January 02, 2015 06:00 PM (sj3Ax) MUMR's access is limited and regular, but he also has access to multiple ISPs. MUMR doesn't respond or engage, and he always did before the banning. I think his posts are written in advance and sent at intervals by some sort of program bot. While we enjoy it when ace changes his posts, I don't think MUMR ever knows the difference. the biggest mistake the right ever did was NOT go all out to expose, dismantle, and utterly destroy the ideology of socialism / communism. instead, post Reagan, when the wall came down, when eastern europe was freed, we just thought the battle against this evil, anti-human ideology was won. well, in the process the leftist anarcho/communist academics regrouped and took over the schools, and every institution that they could. now they have spent the past 30 years infecting the young with this ideology, and it has really taken its toll. you now see young people that don't believe in capitalism, hard work, and the virtue of our system. instead, these young people want hand outs, have bought the altruistic lie, and think that we need to conduct a war on poverty - again (they never learned about the failed war on poverty in school). these kids also think white people invented slavery, and that this is the most evil country on earth. it will another 30 or 40 years to undo this damage, if the country survives. we made a HUGE mistake in not saying NEVER AGAIN and exposing communism for what it was. we should have hammered that home. communism has killed more people than the nazis ever did. where are the victims of communism memorials? where are the victims of communism museums? where? no where, and they are back AGAIN.
