Jon "Loose Lips" Gruber, 2009: The Affordable Care Act Will Not Be Affordable Nor Will We Care Enough to Act. Discuss.

Dude has Tourette's or something.

Patrick Howeley at the Daily Caller:

President Obama’s health care adviser Jonathan Gruber said that the Affordable Care Act would definitely not be affordable while he was writing the bill with the White House...

Gruber said that Obamacare had no cost controls in it and would not be affordable in an October 2009 policy brief, presented here exclusively by TheDC....

"The problem is it starts to go hand in hand with the mandate; you can't mandate insurance that's not affordable. This is going to be a major issue," Gruber admitted in an October 2, 2009 lecture, the transcript of which comprised the policy brief.

"So what's different this time? Why are we closer than we've ever been before? Because there are no cost controls in these proposals. Because this bill's about coverage. Which is good! Why should we hold 48 million uninsured people hostage to the fact that we don’t yet know how to control costs in a politically acceptable way? Let's get the people covered and then let’s do cost control."

I can't wait to not read Politico's absence of a story on this.

Some number of the remainder are/were illegal immigrants. The actual uninsured not by choice was always very small. That's actually how the Navy did it.

At boot camp ('60's era) you climbed a tower above the pool (ten feet?) and then had to jump in and then swim around the deep end one lap.

I told them I couldn't swim, they said jump anyway or else.

Jumped in. Went to the bottom. They pulled me out THEN they taught me to swim. Which btw was lame as all they did was teach me how to float on my back.

Sounds good, zombie, for those that can handle preserved coconut. Me, I always catch this sort of "rancid" overtone when I eat coconut-laden food. I can wrestle it down, but there's a counter-current working against me.

I just finished lunch, too. Grilled-cheese sammiches made from 8-grain bread and Cheddar cheese, cooked in my antique grilled-cheese sammich press with the cloth-covered cord stuffed with death-dealing asbestos. Sammiches were yummy.

231 I saw Vic caught this upstream. 48 million? 48 million??!

Ridiculous.

First of all, nobody - nobody - goes without actual critically needed medical care. From emergency rooms for trauma on up through Medicaid and private and state-level programs, everyone gets what they NEED.

So, what's a meaningful - and policy-relevant - definition of those in "need of insurance"? Involuntarily, financially unable uninsured people who don't qualify for the myriad of public and private medical care benefit programs, who are US citizens or legal residents. Vic mentioned 15 million. I think even a cursory scrub of THAT number using the above definition would shrink it to under 10 million.

So to "cover" 10 million people in a nation of 320 million, the entire system had to be turned upside down?

And of course, this leaves aside the key fact that even the tiny number of involuntarily uninsured would face no particular issue with MOST of their medical needs if a health insurance market were allowed to actually exist, and weren't ruined by state and federal interference.

There isn't much basis for optimism when a complete non-issue, which is only an issue because of govt. meddling, is created out of thin air and used as a rationale to seriously damage the country's freedom, economy, and welfare - even as a clear majority (almost mysteriously, given the apparent effective national IQ recently) vigorously opposed it all.

Oh, you wanted to retire or change fields? Sorry. No can do. The good of "the people" must come first, you understand. You *do* wish to attend to the good of "the people", do you not?

Big freeze coming up, here in California.

I have some young fruit trees that I planted. These particular trees need warm weather and one is warned that a freeze could kill them, expecially when they're still little trees.

Now, previously, years ago, I bought a mattress that cam covered in a large plastic wrapping. because I'm that kind of person, I saved the wrapper, "just in case" it might come in handy for some unknown future use. it's basically a gigantic clear plastic bag, big even to fit a mattress.

Or, for that matter...a tree!

Just now I successfully pulled the bag completely over the tree and tied it around the trunk, creating a self-contained mini greenhouse.

Nice.

273 T. Jeff, you're not missing a thing, you're just using completely baseless numbers. There were never anything like 48 million involuntarily uninsured who wanted/needed it (unlikely there was even a third of that number). And what portion of the "7 million" are just replacing insurance destroyed by "reform", not getting it for the first time? So the "net" O-care "winners" number in the low millions, tops.

I seem to recall NJ alone was estimating 800K losing private insurance, in CA it would be in the millions (including me). It must vary from state to state, but in CA it is literally unaffordable now for many people to have even the basic (already nearly destroyed by govt. regulation) "insurance" they've had for decades.

People now face the choice between a small mortgage payment for bare-bones catastrophic-type coverage, and Medicaid, or going naked or doing short-term insurance (also bare-bones, neither one exempting you from Roberts' magic "tax", unless some of the legislating-via-email-and-press-conference done in the past year opened a loophole). People who have, their entire lives, made sure they were covered, without "help".

Moo Moo, correct about the likely uselessness of the GOP, but wrong for the reason in this case. There is hardly any new constituency of any significance that has been created, vs. tens of millions dramatically and directly hurt by this idiocy. So your back-of-envelope political calculation is wrong. But - the outcome may be as you predict anyway. Why? The "representative" part of our representative govt. seems to have essentially evaporated, in effect.

As he pulls the lanyard on his Mae West and starts to swim to the surface far above, in the darker blue background see parts of the fuselage falling into the deeps and then as Zamp sweeps his arms downward to boost his speed to reach air you recognized one of the darker shapes is the body of one his crewmates also sinking.

Depending on how cold exactly it's planning on getting (anthropomorphizing the weather is good for it), you may be able to simply get by with spraying down the leaves with water. Doesn't work if the temp is going to be below 26F-ish for more than a couple of hours, though.

312 Might actually have to go see not just one, but three movies. Unbroken, the Turing/Bletchley Park thing, and American Sniper. Hear good things about the last two - and await Anna's judgement on the first.

Still skeptical, but feel I at least have to go peek at them. Was so disappointed in Lone Survivor - well not surprised, just totally unimpressed. Hollywood's got good technical people, but apparently zero talent for letting fantastic true stories tell themselves on screen. This includes Clint with Flags of Our Fathers, tied with Lone Survivor for the movie that captured the least power and magic of the actual true stories they told. Just pathetic.

I wrote off the Enigma movie when I heard about it, assuming it would be some idiotic gay-persecution sob bathos story vs. some part of the amazing and important code-breaking story. But word is they avoided that, somehow (and I mean somehow, given the talent level and obssessive and stupid agendas in Hollyweird). Of course the Bletchley Park part of the story was just one, and from a cinematic perspective the dullest. Portraying just some highlights of the espionage, book-and-machine-snatching miracles, and battlefield protection/exploitationparts of the Enigma history would make a spectacularly entertaining (and entirely accurate) movie.

328 A nice touch I don't remember from the book is Phil talking about Eddie Rickbacher's crash in the Pacific a year before. It was because of that incident Zamp, Phil, and Mac found all that equipment on the life rafts.

Very nice in how during their 45+ days adrift everything weathered. The bright chrome yellow of the rafts by the end has faded and frayed to a dull yellow. Clothes weathered and frayed. And how emanciated they all looked, counting ribs.

The Arisaka rifles looked right. Straight bolts. And one even had the crazy long legged bipod. Zamp's first captors are Naval, the shoulder anchor insignia was a cool touch. The Bird yeah they captured him in all his sadistic glory with his kendo stick.

Movie ends with real footage of Zamp doing the Olympic torch relay through Japan when he was 80.

331 Hmm, controlling costs of medical care. How could it be done. Perhaps like every other cost that was ever contained, ever. Competition, innovation, and choice.

Public goods, private goods. Ninety % of the smartest citizens don't understand this distinction, but it is essentially the entire answer to most questions of policy. Health care for almost everyone is a private good. Private goods are produced best in a maximally free economy. Innovation and cost-containment go hand in hand (see .... well, any dynamic product or service market you can think of).

Best policy (i.e. benefitting everyone the most) WRT private goods? Leave the markets alone, let them provide, innovate, compete.

Public good portion of health care (as with food, housing) is tiny % of those unable to provide for themselves. Do we have food-stamp stores? Have they been building public housing since Cabrini-Green? Nope. Cash transfers. To participate in the market. Duhh.

Medical care cost in recent times is exactly like long-distance telephone service before the telecom revolution. Or air fares before airline dereg. Hello?

Try these explanatory exercises on your average "educated", "smart" coastal clueless lib. Puzzled looks. Emotional upset. They are aggressively illiterate and stupid in every single thing that they don't engage in personally - where they of course are rational self-maximizers, like everyone else.

Venezuela's socialist government blames political opponents, who protested in the streets for four months earlier this year, for damaging the South American OPEC nation's economy. The protests resulted in violence that killed 43 people.

"These actions against public order blocked the correct distribution of basic goods to the population, as well as the normal development of production of goods and services," the bank statement said.

"This resulted in an inflationary spike and a fall in economic activity."

What will happen if the plastic touches the foliage? I've been in citrus groves and they are sometimes covered in plastic during freezes.

Considering that the freeze will be accompanies by gale-force winds, keeping the cover away from the leaves is impossible.

371 The only real nit-picks lie with the B-24s.

Jolie got things right with Pacific Liberators in many respects. They operated at lower altitudes so did not need the oxygen or the massive flak gear their European counterparts wore. Another field modification for Pacific D models was the removal of the tail turret and changing it to the open configuration seen in the movie with just a single .50cal.

Only late model Ds had the Sperry ball turret. Not sure what the serial number for 'Green Hornet' was. As for Superman. With hydraulics out, the Sperry ball turret would not retract into the fuselage and thus trapping the ball turret gunner in. And you will never see a B-24 on the ground with the ball turret extended because there is not enough ground clearance for it, so that ball turret during the crash landing would have sheared off ripping the fuselage and killing the gunner.

* Burned the sauce I had in the fridge

* Burned the chicken I was going to put the sauce on

* Took the new sauce I made off the stove too early, and had to scoop it back out into the pan to cook more

* Dropped a piece of chicken while I was doing this, which landed on my foot.

BTW, i ate that piece of chicken anyway.

377 From the USDA official instructions:

"Cover the lemon tree with old blankets for the night. Drape them over the canopy and envelope the plant completely from the top to the ground to create an environment warmer than the ambient air. Do not use plastic, which does not retain heat as well. "

Ah so the problem with plastic is not that it will hurt the tree, but merely that it lets out more heat that solid fabric coverings so. That, I'm not worried about. I just need some protection, not airtight perfect protection. It's gonna be in the upper 20s, probably -- as long as I keep one layer on the trees to boost them a few degrees, I think they'll be OK

I want to avoid:

- Purchasing anything for this purpose;
- Doing anything that involves a lot of labor, like building a frame around the tree.

Quick and simple, free plastic bag, ten minutes, done.

399 Don't worry about costs. Get everyone covered and then we'll control costs.

Don't worry about people losing their jobs when we raise the minimum wage. Get everyone rich first and then it won't matter that everyone is unemployed (link on instapundit).

We're gonna need more studies, because common sense has been bred out of the population, and we're gonna need more experts to tell everyone what to think and how to think about it. It's for your own good.
