Quietly, the US and NATO End the War in Afghanistan
After 13 years of fighting.
With zero fanfare, a small flag-lowering ceremony was conducted in Kabul that marked the end of the war in Afghanistan.
As the military and political leadership continues to assure us that the Afghanistan army is up to the challenge of defending the country, the Taliban has continued to advance in several provinces while attacking targets of opportunity all across the country.
ISAF was set up after the U.S.-led invasion as an umbrella for the coalition of around 50 nations that provided troops and took responsibility for security across the country. It ends with 2,224 American soldiers killed, according to an Associated Press tally.
The mission, which was initially aimed at toppling the Taliban and rooting out al-Qaida following the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, peaked at 140,000 troops in 2010. Obama ordered a surge to drive the insurgents out of strategically important regions, notably in the southern provinces of Helmand and Kandahar, where the Taliban had its capital from 1996 to 2001.
If the goal was to build Afghanistan into a viable secure nation-state, then the mission was a failure. But if the goal was to disrupt Islamic terror groups and keep them from establishing safe havens for training and preparations in Afghanistan, then it was a success. And whatever politicians have said over the years, I've always viewed the latter goal as the only real reason why we were in Afghanistan.

Best predictor of divorce? The age when couples cohabit
I've always wondered why living together before marriage seemed to correlate with later divorce but maybe the entire connection was actually due to bad methodology.
As it turns out, those studies that linked premarital cohabitation and divorce were measuring the wrong variable, says Arielle Kuperburg, a professor at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, who produced much of the research released Monday. The biggest predictor of divorce, she says, is actually the age at which a couple begins living together, whether before the wedding vows or after. . . .
Couples who begin living together without being married tend to be younger than those who move in after the wedding ceremony - that's why cohabitation seemed to predict divorce, Professor Kuperburg explains. But once researchers control for that age variable, it turns out that premarital cohabitation by itself has little impact on a relationship's longevity. Those who began living together, unmarried or married, before the age of 23 were the most likely to later split.

Here's a key portion:
If you pay $0.10/kWh for electricity, these three cars travel 100 mi for costs of $4.50, $3.30, $2.20, respectively (triple this for Hawaii). At $3.50 per gallon of gasoline, a car getting 50 MPG will cost $7.00 to travel the same distance. So in almost all cases, the "fuel" cost is less to the consumer at current prices.
The 3 cars are in order of fuel cost are Volt, Leaf, and Tesla. But you then need to adjust these numbers for current ones. Last I saw, electric rates in CA were around $0.137/kWh and nationwide gas prices are nearing $2.00 per gallon.
So for the Volt, it now costs $6.16 per 100 miles, while the 50 mpg car costs $4.00 per 100 miles. And of course, it doesn't take into account the extremely limited range, reliance on coal fired electricity in the first place, etc.
Low gas prices are a total killer for electric cars.

A B.A. in automotive tech?
My well-informed sources tell me the degree is likely to be a B.A. or B.S. in Business for those who intend to start their own automotive repair shops.
The idea is that the basics of auto repair can be taught in 2 years, so the last 2 years will be Accounting, Management, Business Law, etc. NOte that there might be a many-year gap between years 2 and 3.
There are quite a few guys I know who have 15-20 years as a technician and are taking the A.S. courses to get the degree and are extremely interested in getting a Business degree to make starting and running their own shop easier.
Unfortunately, at least 1 CC administrator prefers something other than Automotive. E-mails just might change this ... we shall see.

The problem with writing about baseball, IMO, is that it's been around so long that you can't assume something never happened before. On baseball sites, I'll say, "Damn, I've never seen a triple play like that one before!" and somebody is sure to say: "Yankees vs. Cardinals 1928 WS..." and provide a link. It's tough to write about without referring to something in the past. Add to that the love so many baseball fans have for stats - and I confess, I start to get lost when people start going on about WAR...

Yeah, it's a bit of a surprise package. You'd think it would be a weak version, or overly Hammerish (not that there's anything wrong with Hammer, but they're more fun than creepy) but it is pretty good. Mind you it's got a great cast to start with. The Coppolla one gets some deserved scorn, but it's pretty good also... I blame Ryder and Reeves, they just don't work. But the rest is visually stunning and has Gary Fucking Oldham in it. Cary Elwes did a stellar job too.

My wife is much smarter than my little sister used to be when we were kids (8-12 years old). We had a dog that sometimes would crap on the floor or carpet and I would ignore it but make sure I was nowhere in site when one of my parents spotted it. But my sister was so stupid that as soon as she saw it, she'd yell, "AW, JEEZ!!! THE DOG TOOK A CRAP ON THE FLOOR!!!" This would prompt one of my parents to yell at her to pick it up and she'd pick it up, while muttering expletives under her breath. The whole time I'd be in my bedroom or in the basement hiding but laughing uncontrollably as I heard her bitching and moaning while she picked up the crap. She was simply too stupid to avoid the situation.

My cousin and his wife have desperate bathrooms. Hers is the huge one with a tub and lots of room for all her lotions and shampoos and makeup. His is the one with a shower stall, a toilet and a sink - but he can sit in there half the morning if he likes.

W.A.R. is a mushy stat. While I use sabermetrics for Fantasy Baseball, I'll leave that to the geeks and the General Managers for real baseball.
Sports is a soap-opera. I understand where people are coming-from when they say, "Sabermetrics are ruining things."

The intent was to provide "business" tools: handle payroll, AP and AR, taxes, banking issues, manage people, business law and stuff like that. My parents raised six kids. My dad worked full time in a factory and ran a small fruit farm. My mom didn't work outside the home, but helped out on the farm. My parents invested their money instead of spending it. There are considerable assets. They DESERVED AND EARNED every single bit of it. There's a huge difference between the way they lived, and the lifestyle of most welfare people. THAT'S why my parents are better off than most welfare people.
This is a great country, and it isn't the fault of successful people, that some people drop out of high school and have babies out of wedlock.

Most of the 18-25 y.o.s I see are really trying to make Automotive a career; about 2/3 of the evening Automatic Transmission class work at various dealerships or independent shops. The older guys see the value of business tools, even if they have to do the program 1 evening course at a time..
Whether this can work or not remains to be seen.

and stuff like that. Very few of the guys I talk to know about these

My car repair guy for the last 30 years ( imports) has a math masters - and he's dyslexic. Absolutely a great diagnostician and all around great guy. Fun to justs sit around the shop with and watch him figure stuff out.

If your shop gets large enough, you really need a bit more. Additionally, the older guys are usually quite smart, but not highly educated, so the time and detail of another 2 years would benefit them; at least they say so.
I think that part of it is "Real World Experience" ... they have a lot of it, but not in these areas, and really "feel" that they need the assistance and credibility that a degree would provide.

I keep any given S&W revolver there, as they all work the same, be they five, six or seven shots. They all point the same, and the trigger pulls are nearly all the same.
So, regardless of what's in the rotation of carry, a return from the local range or other such juggling of inventory, it's all S&W there, all the time.
I also know that no matter how groggy and sleep addled I may be, that my muscle memory is 1000% there with the wheelgun, come hell or high water.
Conversely, when out n' about, (presumably, awake?), I carry a variety of semiautos, with only the occasional revolver in the mix, as it suits me.
What do you grab, (besides the wife) when things go bump in the night?

If your shop gets big enough, you hire a manager to run the paperwork end of things. Or outsource accounting and bookkeeping. No way you need a business "degree" to run a small business. Or a large one, for that matter. A degree is a piece of paper, spoiled.

True, but there's a zone where a business manager is too expensive. Getting through the zone quickly is the plan, but it doesn't always happen.
Then there is the "contemplation" phase; keep working for The Man, or Start a Business? Having some familiarity with how a business is run and what things are needed, and how to avoid legal hassles, helps.
There's also the "manage & control" phase; a guy who's spent his career fixing cars likely knows little about this, but several courses, maybe a degree, should help a lot.
What about bank loans? A degree helps, and determining how much is needed, how it will be paid back, how much business needs to expand, how much risk is involved, etc. ... sounds like a degree might help a lot.

Jay, yes, "sustainable" is ridiculous, but of course it contains some actual substantively ridiculous and pernicious crap. Whereas "reach out" is just stupid and icky. For some reason I still recall one particular time the head of my embassy section (didn't really report to him, though) - a good guy overall - used "reach out" and I came out of the staff meeting just mentally wretching at the stupid alternative to "contact".
I'll add one, from the early 80s (pretty sure I know this, saw it happen in real time, definitely a Beltway thing): "impact" instead of the much better "affect" or "influence". Ridiculous. Up until that time, impact had a physical connotation ("the projectile was travelling at 1,257 fps at impact"). Then - stupid sub-mediocre bureaucratic dumbed down social science Beltway cretins started using "impact". Presto. Language degraded.
And let's not forget a touchier one (see it here all the time). By now, after years of uncorrected misuse, it probably qualifies as a neologism, as opposed to an error. "Beg the question". Pretty sure until fairly recently this phrase was used only in its original, correct, and very useful sense: to commit the logical fallacy of assuming an answer to the subject in question. One of the most frequent and damaging fallacies, very much deserving a non-Latin common phrase of its own. Alas. Now it is used as a substitute for "raise the question".
Note that none of this falls under the "get off my lawn" rubric. We're talking an actual loss of useful words and phrases, a reduction in clarity and concision and precision, not to mention insertion of clunky inferior substitutes for excellent stuff already in common use.

Experience should be your guide. You want a 4:1 ratio of Price v. Expenses, if you can charge it in a given market.
Always try to be The Best in your market. if you hire people that are smarter than you, that's a good start.
Managing those employees is a talent that can't be taught. Firing people is the toughest thing you'll do, in most instances.
(I found overseeing everything to be the most time-consuming "correction" of employees.)
Have standards. If YOU wouldn't "let it go", then it is not okay.
-I warned nicely and told them about my exacting standards of cleanliness for a tanning salon.
-I chided their shit and told them that I would fire them if things weren't Minty-Fucking Fresh.
-I fired them.

True, but there's a zone where a business manager is too expensive. Getting through the zone quickly is the plan, but it doesn't always happen.
Then there is the "contemplation" phase; keep working for The Man, or Start a Business? Having some familiarity with how a business is run and what things are needed, and how to avoid legal hassles, helps.

You can actually get bookkeeping services quite reasonably, even around here. And discussions with accountants or consultants about lease/buy, expand/retrench, and related issues are easy.
What you don't get very easily is a feeling of why it matters and what it means, when it comes to monthly financials or tax reports.....and, amazingly, this is true in many corporations around the Valley.
Let's say you have a liquor store, with 9 bays of refrigerated vending. You've got 1/2 bay of champagne, 1/2 bay of chilled mineral water, 1 bay of chilled wine, 2 bays of industrial beers, 2 bays of imports, 1 bay of craft beers, and one bay each of Coke products and Pepsi products.
Your accounting system should be able to tell you what profit you earn from each of these product types. If you're earning the same amount from your imports and craft beers, for example, you should convert one of your import bays into more craft beers.
You should be able to tell whether you should expand your bourbons into your vodkas and whether your wines should shrink for candy bars. And every time you get a financial statement, you should be avidly tearing into it for the information it can bring you.
But most businesses are like, "more stuff from the beancounters" and toss it in their inbox.

Several years ago, visited the aquarium at Scripps Inst. in La Jolla. Nice facility, perched over La Jolla Shores. Really cool colored jellyfish - amazing. We finish with the jellyfish and walk over to the other side of the main inside exhibit bldg. Bit banner sign at entrance - "ocean acidification crisis" blah blah blah. But in talking to the various people in my evening class(es), I realize that they see value in obtaining an AA/ AS and a 4 year degree even more. T-Bird and I are two of the few people, and possibly 1/2 of all the people there who have such degrees. In one of my classes, one of the older guys (maybe 38-40) said he knew no trigonometry ... never learned it.
Some of the degree is simply confidence-building ... these guys will be able to talk ACROSS to bank officers and tax guys and other businessmen. Maybe this is just The Wizard giving out scrolls, testimonials and medals ... but it looks like it will work.
Some of it, though, is real education coupled with real training. These guys simply do not know how to prepare a statement of cash flow, how to run payroll, how to read a balance sheet, how to put the pieces of a business together.

The course was an intro to CNC Mills. All code was written in G-Code. Making a straight cut along a specified line, then turning 32deg to make another straight cut requires trig to determine what the endmill path must be to generate the correct geometry.

But...the time spent acquiring that piece of paper is represented by lost income, and lost experience. Why not simply have some ultra-practical night-school courses, like "keeping books for a small business", "tax law for small business" and "labor law for small business", and "economics for small business"?
Thousands of people start small businesses every year. Many of them fail, because they didn't do their homework, or had unrealistic expectations. But even in failure, they gain knowledge of what not to do next time.
The problem with handing out degrees for this sort of thing is that it creates the impression that one "should" have a degree in order to be a success, and that, in a nutshell, is credentialism. Case in point: journalism. Create a "school" of something, staff the school with Marxists, and crank out indoctrinated hacks.

For example. You're running short of cash, but a big customer is going to kick down a major payment on a big deal you did a month ago. You've got a bunch of vendors threatening to cut you off if you miss a payment and you just ran payroll and owe a $10,000 tax deposit. The IRS has a schedule that says that the penalty for late payment on that tax deposit is less than it would cost for a payday loan -- pay the vendors and stiff the Feds?
Well, I sure wouldn't -- and would keep substantial distance between myself and anyone who would.....because failure to pay over money withheld from paychecks is subject to a 100% penalty, both the money and the penalty cannot be discharged in bankruptcy, and there is no statute of limitations on it. Further, that "failure to pay over" can be assessed on anyone who had anything to do with running the payroll or custody of the cash.
There is a well-known case where a bar would give paychecks in sealed envelopes to the night bartender to give to waitresses who came on shift after the office had closed......and the IRS went after the night bartender. He barely beat it, too.
I know a guy who had a client that, in between running payroll and depositing taxes, wrote a big check to a vendor that got deposited and cleared.....and he made the bank walk it back (betcha didn't know that was possible, didja?), pay the payroll taxes, and bounce the check. You won't learn that little maneuver out of a textbook.

That's it. They really are quite smart, but their training and education is severely ... focussed ... Me neither. But, California has passed a bill, and the CC are submitting plans, and, from listening to some of the discussions, Business seemed to make the most sense. Mechanical Engineering seems logical, except that Automotive Repair is really at the opposite end of the Automobile industry activity spectrum.

Just no. The 4-year degree is completely unnecessary. Some training in the various disciplines needed to run a business, absolutely, but a degree, no. And one of the most important things needed? The desire to be one's own boss. If that isn't there, there is no point in going into business.
Two years of night school at the community college level should be ample to bring those guys up to speed on the desk-jockey end of running a business, even if it all it does is allow them to know what they don't know, and to thereforehire expertise as required. Joe the auto mechanic knows he doesn't know anything about 3-phase power, so he hires an industrial electrician to install the new compressor in his shop. Joe also knows that he's not too good at keeping books, so he hires an accountant for that.

Mechanical Engineering seems logical, except that Automotive Repair is really at the opposite end of the Automobile industry activity spectrum.
So. Is a Business degree the plan, or something else? I'll tell you about what was selected at the next meeting.

Just no. The 4-year degree is completely unnecessary. Some training in the various disciplines needed to run a business, absolutely, but a degree, no. And one of the most important things needed? The desire to be one's own boss. If that isn't there, there is no point in going into business.

See here, if you start offering credentials in a discipline that hitherto didn't demand any, sooner or later, it will come to pass that one has to have those credentials in order to gain employment in the trade, regardless of their skill level or experience. It is already happening. Jobs that once did not require a degree now do, and often, just to get that entry level position or some lame internship, one has to have sometimes even a graduate degree! Of course, these "entry level" positions also pay very little, and sometimes only people with degrees from prestigious universities can get their foot in the door. I've pretty much come to the conclusion that for some fields, if you can't get into a top notch school, you might as well forget about a career. No one will hire you. Pretty soon, one will have to have a degree in electrical engineering in order to be a receptionist. Oh wait, those jobs are being outsourced to automated phone services. Silly me!

There's a considerable amount of training necessary, and a very large part comes from OJT and simply remembering what equipment and variations the various models have. Now pick a different brand, maybe change from Lexus to Mercedes. The required knowledge changes ... considerably.
There is considerable evidence that credentials may truly be needed. Apparently ASE certifications are valued by employers, judging by the job notifications that I get.
So you want to expand worthless degrees to worthwhile pursuits, too?

Note, though, that Arbalest isn't arguing for credentialism as a means for state enabling of cronyism (the usual path) -- he's reflecting back on something more like the guild system of "apprentice, journeyman, master" which purports to actually hold some competence at its core.
Part of the problem is that few bodies of knowledge are susceptible to a guild analysis these days. You become a successful leatherworker today by successfully introducing novel CNC techniques to your craft, not by becoming increasingly skilled in stitchery. You apply colors lifted from gene-splicing biotech on hides from micro-farmed heritage beasts.

And, here come the subtle distinctions....I consider a 4-year degree to be evidence of indoctrination, and nothing more. An ASE certification, on the other hand, means that someone has studied a subject in depth that I only have a vague understanding of. The Grievance Studies and Righteous Thinking majors have so poisoned a "liberal arts degree" that I consider it less than worthless. If someone has a real trade or expertise in something from their time in college (e.g. STEM), that may be valued.....but the fact they got it in a four-year indoctrination camp makes me wonder what baggage they bring with it.

First, there are no classes in "business"; they are in economics, accounting, managerial accounting, operations research, marketing, market research, statistics, etc. etc.
Second, you seriously misunderestimate the compensation available to
professors in these areas. Not only do they get professorial salaries
and benefits (nothing to sneeze at), but they can also use their
credentials and reputations to secure consulting and publishing

board and advisory positions with both start-ups and major corporations.
And finally, while you do not need to be able to do all of these things to run a small business, if you don't understand what they do and how they do it at least at a higher level, you will never be able to manage those processes within your business effectively. So while you do not need a business degree to practice a trade, it is certainly beneficial to have one when you are starting or trying to run anything larger than a small shop.

First, 90% of an undergrad's class time will be spent with TAs and adjuncts -- who certainly are the type of person making lousy salaries.
Second, the professors in those lofty subjects that have Gruber-style consultancies are generally well-convinced that their own area of expertise is the be-all and end-all of business. In this, they are deluded.
As a side note to the second point, I would posit that corporate boards and business advisors are chock-full by well-connected idiots with a history of failure that might better be replaced by random Americans selected from a local telephone book.....if business success were the sole criterion for their evaluation. Since incestuous cronyism and political ideology are more highly valued than business success, we get who we get.
And, third, I actually agree that the most important factor in business is awareness of the many factors contributing to its success and failure -- and the judgement of how to deploy resources to address these factors.
The sad fact remains, however, that such judgement and knowledge are likely to be found within a four year degree.

It used to be, you had a liberal arts degree, so you were competent in basic life skills -- writing essays that meant something, thinking problems through with ramifications, understanding historical parallels of current events, setting problems into contexts where they could be evaluated. Then you had a major, where you could be competent in architecture or musical performance or psychoanalysis or quantifying the effects of economic events.
Critical studies have kicked the stuffing out of all of this, to the point where the average college graduate is scarcely more than a potential Occupy schlub or Starbucks barista -- and a four-year degree taints experience in STEM fields more than it enhances value.

I confess that my own perspective may be a bit skewed....I graduated from the University of Casual Sun-Bathing with a degree in Business Economics in 3-1/2 years when it took most people 5 years to attain it -- and I ended-up graduating with well more than the minimum number of units to graduate and just under the number where they would demand "why aren't you gone, yet?" And, further, I was the one in the CPA review course going, "why the hell did I take 3 years of courses in this crap when you had a course to teach it in 16 weeks?"
But, seriously, I've hired a bunch of people -- and, beyond bare competence, I've always tried to get ones with some fire in their eyes. How this correlates with the crap students deal with these days is beyond me.

much of the bureaucracy is built to care for the 'squeaky wheel.' Often, the squeaky wheel is someone who is genuinely concerned about the effects of a project on their life.
for example, have you ever had a runway or freeway built next to your home? lots of people have had that experience. as I see it, it really is a strength of our country that people actually care what happens to just plain folks when shit comes to their front door that they didn't ask for.
one of the strangely rewarding things can be finding a way to use the bureaucracy to help someone that would otherwise be getting screwed by the forces around them.

My FIL applied for SSDI benefits for years and was denied every time. He had severe heart problems that ultimately killed him. He never got a nickle of SSDI while kids in Detroit are getting their mothers thousands a year for ADD.
What I have learned any time you apply for some type of benefit like this you need to get a lawyer who specializes in this kind of shit.

That's true and I don't have much need of a PC sans internet...
I am planning on having my electronics in a shielded room after we retire....BUT APUs will have gone up 2-4 generations by then....

30.06 is a tall order for the AR....easily doable in .308 though....

My true dream would be a Garand built from the ground up using BAR magazines instead of en-bloc clips.

I'm just in the habit now...
I REALLY like the nickle boron I used in building wife's carbine...
NiB receiver upper and lower, NiB BCG nice trigger and that is the thing when you roll your own so to speak you have total control over the system....
Now my rifle I built on the AR-57 lower is essentially straight stock A2 profile and yeah I would buy stock in lieu of that....
if ANYONE was making good 20" barrel Heavy A2/A4 profile rifles....

my job was basic entry level advance/staffer weenie but i had access and responsibilities far beyond anything in my as-yet-undeveloped professional career. (i was 22).
As such I participated in numerous motorcades, up to and including finding local volunteers to drive in them. My recollection in at least 3 or 4 instances was that the Press/Staff/Visitor vans were always driven by local civilian volunteers. USSS/WH Advance guys drove the principals of course, but everyone else rode in vehicle driven by a volunteer.
Basically you handed them your SSN number and they came back and said yeah you can drive, or in one unfortunate case, we had to tell an otherwise well-liked and reliable volunteer that a previous felony conviction meant he could not be a driver.
