Oh, Yes: Jeb Bush Rockets to Head of the Pack in New Poll

Isn't this terrific? Jeb Bush is favored by 23% of Republicans.

There's some wrinkles here: A lot of Republicans don't know about Jeb Bush's various base-displeasing positions. But then, a lot of Republicans actually approve of those positions, too, or at least don't care, which may mean that Bush can win the nomination just by appealing to those liberal-ish Republicans, and, of course, by sucking up hundreds of millions in donor money.

In unrelated news, a candidate from the 2012 contest has just zoomed to first place in my own private poll.

After discussing their penchant for buying pocket sized Constitutions to hand out to random folks, they went into a discussion of who was greater, GWB or GHWB. 167 But we shoot ourselves in the foot. Every. Single. Time.

Who's this "we?"

Or do you mean that I shouldn't vote for my favored candidate, but yours, so that we will all vote for the same candidate?

I put this on the candidates, not the voters. Voters are going to (and should!) vote for the candidate who stands closest to their values. But the candidates are so egotistical (they have to be, to some extent, to run in the first place) that none of them will look at the landscape and say, "You know what, I like any of X, Y, or Z far better than Jeb or Christie for President. I'll just bow out and throw my support to them."

So we get 3 or 4 acceptable candidates who split the early conservative vote, and a liberal Republican can basically stay in until they've all eaten each other. That's how we got McCain and Romney.

There needs to be some pragmatism about who can actually win and who can't. And I also agree we need some true statesman candidates to run and figure out who that is. The problem is, everyone involved has giant egos.

Also, many approach the Republican nomination as a platform to become a celebrity (like Huckabee did) and so you have people like Newt in 2012 that were on a book tour or now Ben Carson.

The Party needs to wrangle in the debates and also have some discipline about who moderates. How about if you want to appear at a televised debate, a candidate sign an agreement to no tv or book deals for 2 years? That would probably filter 90% of the clowns right off the bat.

There's also the conventional wisdom that the big diverse jumble of groups that vote Dem will be one big happy family. Each of those groups will demand to be put at the front of the line when the free shit and privileges are set to be handed out. 304 If our side was smart though, we'd run New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez against her. Female, Hispanic, popular in her blue state. That's checkmate right there.

I don't think Hillary has the same voter base as Obama. Obama was just able to get every last minority voter to the polls. Hillary won't have that luxury. I also think we'll have a better candidate than Romney. The Thurston Howell image along with the Mormon angle hurt.

Hillary may not get the black vote like Obama did, but she will get the woman vote in the same way. The first woman president, while not quite as epic as the first black president, will be a big enough deal. Think of the MSM treatment as well....WHAT? You're not voting for Hillary? Why do you hate women?

308 I really don't buy that the demographics of the country changed so much from Bush getting elected in 2004 to where it's now impossible for a Republican to win. Whites still make up just under 80% of the population last time I checked, and they usually are better about showing up to vote.

The analysis I've seen shows that even if Romney got over 70% of the Hispanic vote, he still would have lost. You have to understand, most Latino voters are located in states that aren't in play. Think California, Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, etc. Those states listed probably make up 90% of the population of Latinos, and none are really considered swing states.

I'm still going to dig into Martinez' record etc, but so far she's coming off as a bit too "moderate" (aka liberal) for my taste. She likes Common Core, for one thign. And she's not nearly as good a speaker as Haley, from what I've seen. But she's in a purple state so some of this is to be expected.

In *theory* if Haley is really a conservative (Vic-approved) she could be a great compromise candidate given that she has a business background, incl Chamber of Commerce time. That's what really intrigues me about her.

Plus, I like the husband's military service. It's at least some connection to military that most of them (except Perry) lack.

Some states also offer more public school alternatives, for people who live in poor performing districts. For instance, in Michigan there are charter schools for which there is no tuition. Michigan also offers "Schools of Choice". School districts can agree to take students from other districts if they have the room. The student's state education money goes with him to the new school district. So, a student from a poorly performing inner city school can attend a much better performing suburban school.

If O-care - easily the most disastrous stupid policy with direct negative impact on tens of millions of actual voters - doesn't completely change the temperature in the pool, then "it's dead, Jim". In the sense that the country's course is pretty much just a random wander now, since even basic, directly felt policy disasters STILL don't change the political climate.

This leaves aside all the other policy disasters. O-care directly affects people in a vary concrete way in the present - a somewhat uncommon feature of most major national policies, wise or stupid.

338 Whites haven't been 80% in a long time.

Right now it's:

White 72%
Black 13%
Asian 5%
Amerindian 1%
Other 6%
2 or more 3%

But non-Hispanic White is only 64%

So in voting blocs it's more

White 64%
Hispanic 16%
Black 13%
Asian 5%

What most people mean when they say "white" is now less than 2/3rds of America and heading rapidly to less than half.

But that's mostly due to the rise of the hispanic population. And asian secondarily. Both due to high immigration.

378 Hillary's near-perfect awfulness as a candidate is sort of the point. Some here think this quality will hurt her, even doom her. I dunno. Not saying they're wrong. But everything I have seen for years tells me it's basically irrelevant. Obama was an absurd candidate - yes, on a retail level as well. Not just absurdly unfit for any public office, but a bumbling, gaffe-a-matic amateur who, recall, actually lost the primaries where people voted (he won through caucus states and "super-delegates").

Just take PA, where Hillary womped O pretty good, as I recall. PA - where a significant portion of Dem voters are pretty much "Reagan Democrats". Hillary, a lackluster figure with the odor of her husband's scandal- and error-riddled tenure, beat the empty suit "black" media creation. Just one indicator, but if PA Reagan Dems could stomach Hillary once, their tribal and low-info bigotries (union, etc.) could easily boost any Dem, even Hillary.

2012 pretty much confirmed that tribal, self-dealing, and ideological (bigoted and uninformed, like coastal "liberals") voters now easily dominate rational, practical voters. And the Dems, needless to say, have the tribal and bigoted vote locked up (I still hear not-stone-stupid Dem types who muse how disappointed they are with Obama, but .... "Palin really scared me" - so yes, stone-stupid as citizens and voters, but wow).

382 >>All the betting lines in 2012 had Obama winning. They already cracked the code.

Ah, no. As I said earlier, the smart money was on Obama the incumbent and his powerful nationwide turnout machine, the active support of the msm and the fact that his most controversial accomplishment hadn't even been implemented yet.

Demographics is a useful tool but it is not the only one. The demographics were not hugely different from Bush winning re-election and Obama winning easily 4 years later.

384 The figures I saw were whites made up 77.7% of the American population. that's according to the last US Census

Those figures aren't accurate. I just looked them up at wiki, which has the latest Census data.

387 Jeb could strap Hillary to the roof of his station wagon and go on a vacation; I'd still have trouble voting for him.

Maybe if he had video of him hosing her down after she poops all over the roof of the car.

Maybe.

Republicans can most certainly find a majority with those demographics.
Posted by: McAdams

Republicans have won the popular vote majority exactly once in the last six straight elections.

Not a good record.

389 "Add the fact that Bill Clinton is beloved in the black community and yes, they will turn out for 'a random' candidate like Hillary."

The Clintons surely aren't beloved by the Obamas.

Bill may have forgotten all about his pointed slight of Barack, when he said dismissively about then-candidate Obama that "a few years ago this guy would have been getting coffee for us". Barack has not forgotten a word of that, you may be assured.

And have you ever seen Mooch and Shrillary on the occasions when they have been forced into proximity with one another? There ARE temperatures so cold as to fall below absolute zero.

For the Betty Ford funeral, the two women departed the same day from Andrews AFB and flew to Palm Springs, then both flew back to Andrews later that evening. On two separate jets. Big jets with plenty of room.

___________

You're seeing 77.7% for White. What you're also seeing is 62.6% for white, non-hispanic.

Hispanics from Mexico are "white" for the purpose of the census.

395 388.

I think that's really cherry picking a statistic, you could also say Democrats have lost 2 of the 4 last Presidential elections.

But my point has to do that if you listened to the media, you would swear whites were now a minority and we'd never win another election. The truth is, if the GOP could woo about 3% more white voters, we'd destroy Democrats in every election.

Instead, all we hear about is the Hispanic and black voters,

Posted by: McAdams at December 29, 2014 06:50 PM (l8J7k)

399 326 If O-care - easily the most disastrous stupid policy with direct negative impact on tens of millions of actual voters - doesn't completely change the temperature in the pool, then "it's dead, Jim".
---------------------------------------------

While OCare is now being felt in the wallet, the lack of doctors and access to medical care is still in the future. Docs are retiring and all these new "customers" with their Medicaid and Ocare are flooding the zone. There aren't enough docs and beds to provide care.

I'm really looking forward to slavery making a comeback...forcing docs and hospitals to provide uncompensated care to all at all times.
