This is sad. Because I really, seriously loved Doonesbury growing up.
Trudeau's been one-dimensional for the last maybe twenty years, but I loved the strip in the 70s. Even the ones he did at Yale. It was satire that bit at all sides, and I sort of grew up with the characters.
It's like losing a member of the family.

they could add one. Doonsberry was one of the lowest three. So they
kept the lowest, Judge Parker, Doonsberry, and Beetle Bailey. Then
they cut Get Fuzzy, to make room for WuMo, a cheap Far Side knock off.

Berkeley Breathed is still very much alive. But he got out of comic strips quite a while back. AFAIK, he did it for reasons similar to why Bill Watterson (Calvin and Hobbes) quit. He'd been doing it for too long and wanted to move on. He's released other stuff from time to time. For instance, back in the '90s I saw a gorgeously illustrated children's book by him. But he's done with newspapers.

There was a study about this recently. In America, the cut off line off line for racial self-IDing as black was about 28% African ancestry. More than that and people tend to self-ID as black. Less and they self-ID as white. (The study look just at black-white bi-racial people).

I was reading through some of the stuff from waaaaaaaay back, and realized that Mike's second wife (the Asian programmer) had appeared well before she started working for Mike's company. She appeared briefly as a Vietnamese refugee orphan that was adopted by an American family.
When I was in AFJROTC, some of the football comic strips (which invariably involve Zonker harassing BD while the team's in the circle) were reprinted in our textbooks.

Agreed. The strip was very funny in the 70's. Even though the strip obviously leaned left the humor wasn't especially mean spirited. like it is now. That changed with the election of Reagan. In the 90s, there was a whole set of comics created on the Dan Quayle drug rumors which turned out to be false and got pulled by the syndicator with a note instead of publishing them. Those rumors were by our old friend who is of great "speed" in order to get his "way", BTW.

One of the great delights of my parenting career was when No. 2 Son discovered Calvin (ampersand) Hobbes on his own. Usually you try to steer the tykes to the good stuff. But he found C+H and loved it, and got every volume, and I got to read them all.

People like characters who do something, take action.
Archie but especially Alex Keaton were characters who just got on with it, went to work on making their lives better regardless of their POV which had virtually no effect on anyone.

That was the easy to see part of it, what would you call season 3-5 of the show?
Basically the writers started to act like the audience was a bunch of assholes b/c they tended to prefer David over Maddie....
The story was envisioned as a Cybil vehicle(and boy wasn't she properly named) and instead Brice Willis took the show and ran with it....
anyway the introduction of Mark Harmon, the Baby, the death of the baby etc etc
at some point it felt worse than a hangover from cheap wine to tune in....
