Gun Thread (12-28-2014)

About that SIG AR pistol brace

Seems that story making the Internet rounds about the ATF's conflicting ruling based on use is pretty much wrong.

Robert’s article said that the ATF has “reversed” itself, and that’s not really true. This latest ruling is 100% consistent and in-line with everything else that has come before it. The entire reason we have the pistol brace and can use it in the manner to which we are accustomed is this idea of intent, and so long as the intent is to build a pistol when installing the brace there is no problem.

Pro Tip

It's a shame this really even needs to be said, but your chances of being shot by a policeman increase exponentially if you're stupid enough to point a gun at him.

This is all.

Gun Of The Week - Answer

That's the Remington XP-100 in .221 Fireball.

Yeah, I get that. It's a very specialized gun for some limited types of target shooting (and gophers count as targets). Probably not what one should buy as his/her first gun, or only gun. That would be a "restricted weapon" here in Canada, and subject to the rules of any handgun. Meaning I couldn't (legally) use it for hunting varmints. Range only.

You can buy little plastic gadgets, into which you fit the magazine, and they automate the magazine loading to some extent. Takes out some of the fumble-finger issues.

47 I mentioned this in an earlier thread: I ran through some aluminum jacketed 9mm in my Walther yesterday. I *think* that stuff blows. It seemed like the case deformed so much every 5th round failed to ejects. Any thoughts? It was the first time I used this piece, and it may need some maintanence, but I was pretty frustrated. Just holding the rounds, they felt tacky and cheap.

The Judge is NOT a small gun. It's a big, heavy framed revolver, and would be less than ideal for an everyday carry. My suggestion would be a hammerless .38 revolver. Because revolvers work. Period.

69 Was at the range yesterday with my two brothers and a sister in law. My older brother gets a phone call from dad that he fell in the supermarket and ambulance on the way. He's 90, by the way. We quickly safe and pack everything, then tell range control officer we have to go and our lanes are open. He gives us cards for another free hour of range time. I'm thinking they have just earned a loyal customer. There are several indoor ranges around here but they did us right.

70 @63

I'll say this, I've always looked at CCW as a few quick shots at short range. This should either incapacitate the attacker or defuse the aggression. I choose a revolver for that.

More perps? More shots? Well, then I become a semi-auto guy.

73 "My hubby bought me a Taurus but working with loading the

------------------

I never load magazines with my fingers. There are all sorts of magazine loading aids out there and they work on the same principle. First you depress the magazine follower so you can easily pop the first round in. Then you depress that round with the loader and pop the next round in, and so on. The simplest ones are just a plastic ring with a post. You put the ring on the end of your thumb and use the post to depress the follower/cartridges.

If you're going to keep that Taurus, shoot it a lot. Taurus arms have a very spotty reliability record. Many folks will tell you theirs shoot fine (someone here will probably pipe up), but personally, I'd never buy one.

OK, I'm assuming the Bushy lower is an AR-15 lower, so .308 is out of the question. I'd go .300 Blackout. Ammunition is becoming available. You'll still be able to use regular AR-15 mags. It comes in 220-grain or thereabouts subsonic loads meant for suppressors, and lighter (110? 140?) supersonic loads. Punches like a 7.62x39mm.

Do NOT get a 7.62x39 upper. The severe taper of the case does not play well with the AR-15 magwell.

Yeah, they're not cheap anymore. Could cost more than that if it's really good.

196 Second the Maglula tip, JeanQ.

Further, every 'ette, and every Moron damn well needs to read Corneredcat.com. Just hands-down some of the finest online information and instruction to be found.

The author, Kathy Jackson, is a National Class competitor, and one of the finest instructors anywhere. It's damn seldom that I find "internet" instruction to be worth a damn, but HERS IS.

Even though she initially wrote the site (and book) for women, it's all do dead-on right, that anyone interested in self-defense, the shooting sports, or just learning more in general, should take it in.

Oh, an finally, this.

There IS NO "RIGHT GUN" for you. That is impossible. How many pairs of shoes do you own? Purses?

Guns run the same way. Your CCW carry gun won't be the same gun you with which you'll want to practice basics and marksmanship. A Kel-Tex P3AT just doesn't get it as an X ring platform.

And a good .22 version of your primary CCW gun, and also a .22 version of your centerfire practice gun, just makes sense!

So, a Browning Buckmark makes a fine .22 practice gun, but just won't make a good purse-gun.

And that S&W M&P-9 Compact, though a great purse gun, kind of bites if you're thinking Thunderwire Bra Holster. (or so I'm told)

Just like your 5" Stilleto "come hither" shoes, don't cut it for your 2 mile morning jog.... different missions require different guns.

Yes, of course, you can make due with one for now, and you can always have a couple of guns "cross-over" in terms of mission and application. But in the end, you'll want your NAA .22 to do it's job, your LCP .380 for it's purpose and your full size centerfire and full size .22 practice guns, to do theirs.

And that doesn't even cover the guns you end up wanting and buying, just because they call to you, or they're pretty, or just feel right in your hand.

Let us not forget either. There's nothing sexier than an 'ette at a Moron function, carrying her own BBQ gun in an exquisite belt-rig. *SWOON*

If you still had a jib, I'm pretty sure I'd like the cut of it.

(Sorry, Jim, but I couldn't resist the gallows humor.)

I wish you'd blog more often...

198 I have two LCP 380's with laser sites. Why would you carry any other pocket gun?

I would think that red dot on the guys face would stop any problems.

199 Great info, Jim!

Getting into guns has been slightly intimidating, but worth the effort.

Gotta start *somewhere* -- best thing I ever did was complete the Basic Pistol class at our local range.

At least one of the local sporting goods stores also offers classes, sometimes "women only" (which relieves stress for many of us!).

Having worked all my adult life, my hands are stiff and grip strength is compromised-- so I **highly** recommend the mag-loader!

One of the ranges here in Metro Detroit (Rock City) frequently has "Ladies Night". All the staff & range officers are women; I hear the place is packed every time.

Suggest the concept to your local range

202 Will do, AltonJackson.

The reason I quit leagues was because of eye-rolling and snickering from the testosterone gallery.

It was nicely structured trigger-time, less boring than just hanging a target and plinking-- but there's always one in the crowd, enough to take the fun out of it, ya know?

We found another place to plink but it's outdoors, so not very comfy in this weather.

Posted by: JeanQ Flyover at December 28, 2014 08:12 PM (rhjQp)

203 Yeah, late to the thread...

About that Sig Brace: the latest letter is the ATF simply setting the groundwork FOR reversing itself.

Almost everyone who is installing the brace is doing so for the purpose of SBRing an AR, sans NFA rules.

I understand the argument about intent. I get it. But the ATF watches You Tube. They see the proliferation of people using it beyond its intent. Because of the earlier letter, they simply can't reverse course. So they are doing this.

Without wishing to incur the wrath of gunners everywhere, my advice? If you want and SBR, then file the paperwork and pay for the stamp. It's not much more than the friggin brace to begin with. Then there's no worry about intent or legality or grey areas.

Let the recriminations begin...

209 Jim @ 96-
Well said, man. Well said. Even if I was rich, and I ain't, I couldn't own all the guns I want. Not enough room. Mrs. E usually carries SampersandW Airweight .38 w/Crimson Trace and I am confident she can handle it well. I work with a G22 .40 and would not care to carry one concealed (unless winter clothes). It's just too damn big. Don't mind the 1911 though, or a smaller Glock. I never leave home without something. That's what counts.

210 Jim, that would be @ 196, man. Need to drink more I suppose.

212 I have the XP in .223. I have a lanyard on mine that I clip to a single point sling.

There is something comforting about a carry pistol that can hit a 6 inch circle at 400 yards.

Posted by: Big Al at December 29, 2014 05:45 AM (LQUXn)

213 Nice choice for the gun of the week. When I was 6 years old, I thought that was the coolest gun in the world. Now that I'm older, it is still one of my grail guns. Perhaps this year.

(But first, I want to put a proper scope on the grail gun I purchased this year: a 1951 Winchester Model 70 in .270 Winchester.)
