Overnight Open Thread (27 Dec 2014)

According to Max Blumenthal: American sniper Chris Kyle was just a popular mass murderer.

Some of these tweets woule be bizarre even if Blumenthal was commenting from the point of view of having seen the film.

"I haven’t seen American Sniper, but correct me if I'm wrong: An occupier mows down faceless Iraqis but the real victim is his anguished soul," Blumenthal wrote smugly on his Twitter account. "[T]he whole film's appeal seems to derive from the latent racism that led America into Iraq."

OK, Max. I'll correct you because you're not only wrong, you are insanely wrong.

Those "faceless Iraqis" were trying to kill American soldiers. No doubt you would have devoutly wished them success in that endeavor, but the military takes a dim view of people trying to kill their men. Kyle's job was to kill them before they killed his fellow soldiers and countrymen. It was, after all, a war where the object is to kill more of the enemy than they kill of yours.

So I guess we'll be waiting a long time for Max to apply this same logic to the President who mows down faceless Iraqis, Syrians, Libyans, etc. with drones.

Farts On Planes

Danish doctor believes you can fart less on airplanes.

he studied the science of human gas, which includes a 1969 study warning that astronaut farts could cause fireballs, research that men actually don't fart more than women, and a look at why farts are so reviled (an anthropologist says they are "invisible" and "we cannot actively avoid them," reports Smithsonian).

Guardians Of Valor

Military posers are 'an epidemic', says soldier who outs them. Guardians of Valor does good work and good on them for doing this.

In 2013, Guardian Of Valor made headlines when American Idol contestant Matthew Farmer admitted that his tale of suffering from a life-threatening war injury "was all lies" on Anderson's website.

"He told the judges his stutter was caused by a grenade explosion, but some guys who served with him in Iraq reached out to say it was actually caused by an overdose of acne medication and alcohol," explains Anderson, who has a backlog of "thousands" of potentially bogus soldiers that he hopes to eventually look into.

I was trying to cut a piece of Purpleheart (the wood) with a jigsaw because all of the better-suited equipment is buried behind a stack of Christmas decoration boxes in the garage, and it turns out that Purpleheart is an uncommonly tough wood, so the thing bound and I got pinched and got a blood blister on my left thumb.
Which, like any good blood blister, wants to expand to take over more real estate. So I needed it to be lanced. That left me at (1) self; (2) random neighbor, (3) random stranger, or (4) the fiancee.

'Olympus Has Fallen' is a good movie. I enjoyed it.

Been wondering why it hasn't showed up on any of the premium channels yet.

Same thing happened with 'Act of Valor'. It never did appear on any of the premium channels.

192 RK, I have an uncle who has developed dementia, and it's very sad to see him going. I'd really like to get his opinion on things now, as he truly is a dinosaur: he was a conservative, Christian newspaper editor. I told my aunt a few days ago that I wished he was cognitively in better shape so I could talk to him at length about the state of modern "journalism." She told me that he had cut all ties a few years ago with (no donations to, wouldn't even accept correspondence from) his alma mater Mizzou J School.

I'm so sorry to hear that, Ricardo. My mother's brothers all died of Alzheimers. My mother did not - but only because she died of cancer when she was in her 60's.

I don't know who had the worst of it. My mother suffered greatly and but it was over in 6 months. However, she was only 62. Her brothers had more good years, but lingered for many more and didn't recognize their families when they finally died.

I wish everyone could go like my ex-brother in laws aunt. She lived to be in her 90's, stayed active and sharp as a tack, and one New Year's Eve, she went to a party at her daughter's house, had a couple of drinks, enjoyed herself - and then went home and died in her sleep. That strikes me as a perfect death. Unfortunately, most exits from this world are not nearly that easy.

277 Another self-hating Jew who thinks shitting on Israel and America gives him some sort of superior moral standing.

Or Blumenthal might be that sort of Jew who thinks that being most authentically Jewish is to be morally superior. To be a light to the nations, which nations he assumes to be in darkness. Oh and to be a light to Israel too, because, you know, he's smarter than a whole nation of Jews.

His rabbi would tell him he is nuts, to think the Jews can survive as an overclass over ALL nations, including nations like, uh, China which simply don't give a shit about his interpretation of a text they don't even share. But, since he's secular, he's not been paying attention to rabbis.

They'll read a few numbers and see if they can say them back. They'll ask where they are right now. They'll ask what day it is, what season it is. They'll ask something like, "If there was a fire in the house, what would you do?"

I've heard that one before. I expect it's been in the grapevine since the 1400s when it was all male students, and priests giving the exams.

What's happened more recently is the fad of universities forcing math majors to take humanities courses, and vice versa. Getting a "C" in a course that's bullshit anyway... that much might be worth a beejer, to some. And teachers who have to teach this stuff to those students who REALLY don't care might take advantage of that.

I have to disagree. How could you NOT root for great coaches like and Nebraska's Tom Osborne and USC's John Robinson and players like Nebraska's Rick Berns and USC's Marcus Allen?!? For the record, I think Berns will be an All-Pro caliber player and surefire NFL Hall of Famer, while Allen probably will be drafted but be cut his rookie year. Allen just doesn't have what it takes to be an NFL player like Berns does.

Cthulhu, I used to work in a shop that had a plasma CNC. They would run
out the welding plates and sheet steel shapes for the equipment we used
to build.
When you said earlier you were running the CNC for 2-1/2
hours I was wondering if you were doing a production run or building the
body armor and turret of a laminate tank.

Have you considered
doing one-off stocks? There are people who really want a Type 38 Arisaka
cavalry stock or other oddities, or even custom stocks for a
competition gun.

Posted by: Kindltot at December 27, 2014 11:55 PM (t//F+)

I am brainstorming. I have a tiny and VERY limited CNC mill two feet to my left (that is about to be able to use Dremel when my order comes in from Taiwan). I have an 80% built kit 3D printer three feet to my right. Twenty feet to my right and a bit behind me, in the garage, I have a manual SIEG mini-mill. Fifteen feet to my right, and more behind me, I have a rack with scrollsaw, router table, belt/disc sander, and mini-lathe.

And it looks like I'm going to ATX West in February.

I'm starting to get excited about living in a world without TFG.

Good. The whole point is for them and their mayor to be butthurt. Turning your back on someone is meant to be a direct insult, glad they picked up on it. And when the mayor of a major city implies that his half African American son is in danger from the police in that city, he can hardly expect the police to be happy about it.

A lot of the re-enactors would spend good money on a stock to make their sporterized war trophy bring-back look like it did when it was first issued so they don't have to drag their cherry, collectable rifle around and maybe damage it.

I also know off-hand three guys who would pay good money for various stocks to replace the chewed up wood they have on their rifles now.

If you could get scans or measurements of original stocks you could make replacement wood as a one-off manufacturing.

It's a regionalism, like saying, "...eh?", pronouncing a word as "aboot", and saying you're sorry if you're Canadian (to say nothing about mentioning toques or backbacon). There is no 1:1 ratio of slurring to inebriation.

It's tough to explain. I now live in a Section-8 slum, but with more than a few high-end above-average cars, usually driven by friends of said section-8-ers.

I'm waiting for the (older) guy the Italian-sports-car-guy was visiting to be tossed out of his house by his guests. My money says it will be an hour before the police finally arrive to turn off his stereo 32" flat screen, and the (older) guy, upon regaining access to his own house, will discover that, yes, when 18-22 y.o.s are drunk enough, anything composed of porcelain, stainless steel and running water is indeed a toilet. They really know how to party.

One of our previously unknown neighborhood problems, specifically, the Italian-sports-car-guy, will then be a problem no more.

At Ohana, it's dressed up by side dishes, polynesian atmosphere, odd activities, scenery, and hospitality.....but Homo habilis could probably manage a successful meal there.

There used to be some hard core shit called Acutane. Very tightly controlled by the docs prescribing it. Constant bloodwork and monitoring of those on it. Nasty potential side effects.

Thing was, lots of folks were going to mexico and buying it there and taking it without proper direction or monitoring.

-Posted by: weft cut-loop at December 28, 2014 01:01 AM (wr4LJ)

LOL @ "arcane methods". The wings are essentially steamed, as I do them in the oven.

They are enormous GFS wings with an ice-coating on them, so... yeah. Sort-of steamed... lol.

They defrost/cook for an hour before being tossed in the various sauces.

They then get placed back into the oven for "carmelization" (sp) of the sauces.

My "signature" wings are called "fajita wings". They are Fajitas On-the-Bone.

If that shit ever comes to Southern Illinois (fuck Northern Illinois), I'm done. I will go all lawn implement jihadi on the nearest government entity and/or installation and go out in a blaze of 32:1 2-cycle glory.

Allah Echo Weedwacker!

They will never get my Husqvarna backpack leaf blower.

No. Fucking. Way.

Outlaw woodstoves?

Make. My. Day.

Oh so I saw The sorta Hobbit: Battle of the Several Armies the other night.

Its ok. They definitely should have done these in 2 movies, and could have easily.

And the leader of the Ironhill Dwarves was really distracting with
being an obvious CGI face. Just such a drastic difference in the way he
looks compared to all other "people's" face.

It is interesting to compare the extra hobbits to the prequel Star Wars. Each episode of both have something immensely cringeworthy....but you end up in different places. Most people would say the hobbit movies are overall true in spirit but have horribly overdone episodes. By contrast, the Star Wars Prequels are false in spirit and widely derided.

632 NFSIC

This was kinda a theme of "Roadside Picnic", the best anti-Western SF which the Soviet Union ever produced. The Zone was fenced off by the government mainly because it had so much awesome alien shit in it. The government was doing it for our own good!

The Berlin Wall is back, bitchez; it's been set up around the borders of California.

634 I had a dream where I was told I was overly loquacious. So I stole a book on good manners.

Who you callin' a "carboy"?

641 I threw a load of towels, etc in wash. I have to stay awake to separate & put in dryer or on rack. It's too hard to wash some things only by hand.
It's not hard but I end up with mini flood when instructions includes
Do not wring dry

I m going to separate & try to go back to sleep. I'm barely interested in comments about clothes in wash.

642 "Farts on Planes"

CDR M, don't know about you, but in my two fight tours on P-3's/EP-3's, we aircrew were OBSESSED with our bowels and traveling to altitude loosened, not tightened everything up!

One time I made the BIG mistake of eating a Pizza Hut Hot and Spicy pizza just before a 12 hour mission. Yikes!

As long as you called it, you were good to go!

SAGE! (or do you say JACKS?)
