Hope you are all are having a blessed, restful evening.

14 So the Interview leaked on all the movie sites.
Watched about half so far.
It sucks. It's just ... really not funny. I did kinda half chuckle one time so far.

I honestly don't understand how James Franco became a movie star. I don't like most actors as people but I can recognize their talent and see how they made it in acting.

Really don't get the Franco thing.

35 The Birth of Christ is the eucatastrophe of Man's history. The Resurrection is the eucatastrophe of the story of the Incarnation.... There is no tale ever told that men would rather find was true, and none which so many sceptical men have accepted as true on its own merits.... It is not difficult to imagine the peculiar excitement and joy that one would feel, if any specially beautiful fairy story were found to be 'primarily' true, its narrative to be history, without thereby losing the mythical or allegorical significance that it had possessed.... The Christian joy, the Gloria, is of the same kind; but it is preeminently (infinitely, if our capacity were not finite) high and joyous. But this story is supreme; and it is true. Art has been verified. God is the Lord, of angels, and of men--and of elves. Legend and History have met and fused.

My favorite group for Christmas Carols:

Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band

Here's a good sampler of their carols and Christmas songs:

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?

list=PLjWRmBcuQu5lmchIpLBpUla40FQzLn-rE

Maddy Prior is or was part of Steeleye Span, an English group who did great versions of Olde English music in the rock idiom.

Here's an example of Steeleye Span(though not a Christmas carol):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRZ_Va4niUs

They too, are well worth seeking out.

With the Carnival Band, she tends more to the Olde English style.

Beautiful voice and spot on music. Some of these songs you may never have heard before.

But they're liable to become your favorites.

I went to college in VT which had a drinking age of 18, but I wasn't a very big drinker. A few overindulgences, but not much.

The worst hangover I ever had was in Belgium where I was giving some lectures. The farewell dinner from my hosts (who were teh awesome) included basically every type of booze imaginable, from champagne to liqueurs to wines to beer. I drunk-dialed my husband (somehow -- I still don't know how I did that) who was back in the states. A few hours later I wound up on the "fast train" from Belgium to London where I was meeting w/ collaborators. Stupidly got into the smoking car. I was completely green by the time I got to London. Sick as a dog.

99 Evening morons.

Son of Crank is home, still ill but doing much better.

Alas, Mrs. Crank today has developed full-blown flu as well. Good thing she sleeps with a doctor and could get a prescription for Tamiflu filled at 10 pm on Christmas Eve. My b-i-l already had flu this year, so I'm the last one standing and can not afford to get it. We had to cancel Christmas dinner, we had several friends coming over for it, but we'd be terrible hosts to inflict this upon them. Also have to miss the candlelight Christmas Eve service too.

100 Well, so far holiday season has not had any major blow ups. All parties attended without passing out, church went well, mall visit this morning was 90 minutes of buying shit, and the rain has stopped. Gifts are wrapped, and family is coming for dinner.

Hopefully wife will not fuck up the turkey and I will make some acceptable gravy.

So, a thankful and Merry Christmas to all the morons.

111 What, no HappyMerry HanauRamaKwansaMas, anymore?

THANK GOD! Actually, let me be more to the point.

Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of your Son, Christ Jesus. Who you sent to us to BE us, to take our place on the cross, to suffer the punishment for our sins.

And, bearing that sin, to receive your forgiveness, that you raise him from the pit of death itself, and seat Him at the right hand of your throne.

And Lord, that I receive in Him, your salvation, that I confess that Jesus IS MY LORD, and MY SAVIOR. I am cleansed by his blood, and raised to sit at His right hand.

Not by any works of my own. But by His Love, Grace and Forgiveness alone.

In Him, I am Born Again, and this Christmas reminds me, not only of His birth, but of my new birth, and life everlasting.

Truly, He is the Way, the Truth, and the Light. No man comes to the Father, but by Him.

Merry CHRIST mas, Horde. From your seafaring sinner,

201 My stupid daughter in law is going to buy one. EVERY review I have seen says they suck, they don't clean and they smell.
---

To be honest, I love mine. Nicer to unload (especially), never gets out of balance, cleans fine, and doesn't smell. I just keep the door open for the hour or so that the clothes are in the dryer.

The only thing I've noticed is that lint that used to turn into little balls in the top load washer doesn't do that with the front loader. But it usually comes out in the dryer's link trap. But a few of Mr's socks for some reason retain the lint. Something about the fabric and the agitation.

I haven't stacked mine, but they are stackable, too, which is another nice feature.

262 It bugs me because of the anti-Christian assumptions buried in it. Africans can't celebrate Christmas? There are more Christians in Africa than anywhere else right now. Which means that "African Christmas" is the one that comes on the 25th of December and celebrates the birth of Jesus.

303 So I'm changing the light-bulb tubes in the laundry-room this afternoon in the semi-darkness and a grey mouse runs across the laundry-room floor; out into the rec room; and disappears between the floorboard radiator and the (old) built-in wall cabinet.

Not that I had anything to hand anyway but I've got the tube pins halfway into the tight grooves of the tube socket so I can't do anything about it. I decide to ignore it until I can put some traps out for overnight.

Then at 9:45 when heading from the TV section of the basement to go upstairs I see the chubby little S.O.B. under the old dining-room table in the basement. I move from side to side observing it and can't tell if it's moving its head following my movements or if it's just lying there. (Dead or asleep?) I go upstairs and get into my shoes (still in my bare feet) put on a pair of rubber gloves and grab a broom and go downstairs (it's still under the table) and get a bucket from the laundry-room.

Sloooowly I turn and approach it. It doesn't move when I tap the broom handle near it and put the bucket down near it. So I know it's dead and I use the broom handle end to push it into the bucket. (Too bad I didn't have a broom-handle Mauser pistol earlier although that might have been a little extreme!) It's grey and chubby so I'm pretty sure it was the same mouse earlier.

I go outside into the mist in my pajamas (it's a reasonable ways above freezing tonight) and toss it over the fence into the schoolyard behind my house.

Back in the house I hear a distinct squeaking noise and then realize that it's not another mouse (or the ghost of the dead one!!1!!!) but is the sound of my bare feet squeaking in my running shoes as I walk.

Using Lysol I sanitize the heck out of the area where the corpse was and I put some raw bleach and then water into the bucket; and also rinse the broom handle tip which with I had used to poke it into the bucket. I still laid out the two traps I had planned on just in case it had family in the area.

Rigor mortis had begun to set in but I don't think it had been dead that long as my aged father had seen it alive in the basement as well around 5:45.

And although I didn't notice any fleas jump off the corpse I hope bubonic plague didn't kill the little bastard although if you don't hear from me any time in the near future, then you'll know what got me.

Hate to say this (and especially at Christmas) but check your dad's finances. Even people who start out well-meaning can decide they "deserve" a little extra cash.
Posted by: Polliwog the 'Ette at December 24, 2014 10:46 PM (GDulk)

I take care of all his finances, go through his statements, and so on. He used to keep a lot of money in his checking account. We limited that even before I moved in with him, because we were afraid that a scam artist could come to the door. Most of his assets are in types of things that would be difficult for anyone to steal from, stocks, CD's, and so on. Also, banks around here want to see ID.

Story. So our church "adopted" quite a few families/kids for Christmas. Church set up a tree with name tags hanging from the tree. You picked the tag/tags you wanted to buy gifts for.

They were struggling a bit getting the tree set up. I walk by about the time they get it plugged in and the lights come on.

So of course, "The lights aren't twinkling, Clark"

No one had any idea what I meant.

479 During one of our Christmas Move Marathon Events, one of my friends surprised everybody by coming up with a different Christmas movie that none of us had seen or heard of before. It's called, "Meet John Doe", a Gary Cooper flick from the 1940's. Everybody was very pleasantly surprised at how good it is. It's a surprising political-ish comedy that winds up wrapping itself around some very Christian themes (Golden Rule, Love Thy Neighbor, sacrifices for mankind), and the climax of the film happens at Christmas. If you're looking for a good Christmas movie that you haven't seen before, you would do well to check it out.

583 Still here. having an eggnog, with rum in it, of course. Quiet day here. I spent most of the day playing with an old Westinghouse table radio. Date-stamped 1956, but it looks like an older design, since it uses all metal octal tubes, which going out of fashion by then.

Replaced the paper capacitors and the dried-out electrolytic capacitors as a matter of course. It had the dread 6X5 rectifier tube which has a bad rep for developing a heater-cathode short and then smoking the power transformer. So I put a pair of diodes and resistors in an old tube base and made a solid-state replacement.

Got it to play, but the sound was very faint. Took out a wrong tube and installed the correct replacement. Much louder, but bad distortion. Replaced the output tube with a different one, distortion gone. Gassy tube, I think. Output tube lacked a cathode bypass capacitor. Added one in, and sound was louder still, and a little "brighter". With the speaker back in the cabinet, it ought to sound great.

Anyway, I got to listen to plenty of Christmas music while tinkering on the old thing.

613 AOP, I have inherited Gingy's Calgarian disdain for Red Deer, but I have fond memories of the place. Soon after we started dating, we met some of her friends at a sports bar in Red Deer. They had an honest to God Baltimore CFL Colts pennant on the wall, not the watered down Stallions that the NFL *spit* forced us to live with. I mentioned that I'm a Baltimoron, and after some good matured trash talk (Boy, your CFL game is tough. Tough, I tell you. Why, our first year in the league, we did all we could and only got to the Grey Cup. Imagine that! It took us two whole seasons before we figured out how to win the damn thing!), the owner of the bar climbed up on a ladder, pried the pennant off the wall, and gave it to me, saying I should have it (I was apparently the first visitor from a city that has indoor plumbing. They were impressed). I still have it, if I ever get a man cave I'll put it up on the wall.

633 When you have a kid who's almost 15 and who-poor guy-has some lousy flu thing- and is sleeping for hours and hours you don't have to be up at 6:50 EST to open presents. He was too sick to come to church and when we got home he wasn't on the computer but was lying down. That's how I knew he really wasn't well. No computer.

Merry Christmas. Today I'll go to church and just be able to sit in the pew and take communion.

redux-"The Christmas Spirit" by Ann Weems

The Christmas Spirit is that hope which tenaciously clings to the hearts of the faithful and announces in the face of any Herod the world can produce and all the inn doors slammed in our faces, and all the dark nights of our souls that with God all things are possible and even now unto us a child is born.

634 And for those people having a "Blue Christmas" because of various hrs things, here's a "liturgy of remembering" which you can do either lighting advent candles or regular candles.

First candle-

This first candle we light to remember those we have loved and lost. We pause to remember their name, their face, their voice, the memory that binds us to them in this season.

All: May God's eternal love surround them.

Second candle-The second candle we light is to redeem the pain of loss, the loss of relationships, the loss of jobs, the loss of health. We pause to gather up the pains of the past. We offer it to God, asking that from God''s hands we receive the gift of peace.

All-Refresh, Restore, renew us and lead us into your future/.

Third candle-This third candle we light is to remember ourselves this evening. We pause and remember the pain of the past weeks and months, the disbelief, the anger. the down times, the poignancy of remembering, the hugs and handshakes of family and friends, all those who stood with us. We give thanks for all the support we have known.

All-Let us remember that dawn defeats the darkness.

Fourth speaker-(and if lighting an advent wreath-the pink candle) The fourth candle is to remember our faith and the gift of hope which the Christmas story offers to us. We remember that God who shares our life promises a place and time of no more pain and suffering,

All-Let us remember Christ, who shows us the way, who brings the truth, and who bears the light.

Please cut and paste and send it to anyone who you feel might benefit from it.
