I had the sad experience yesterday of attending the funeral of an Iraq War vet who was murdered by the incompetence of the VA. He went there complaining of chest pains two weeks ago and was discharged shortly thereafter with meds for his "strained muscles". He returned, with the same symptoms, two days later and was given a prescription for a higher dose, but the same diagnosis. A day or so later, he's in intensive care at a local non-VA hospital and dies from heart failure on the operating table.

Forty-six years old, father of a young woman, engaged to the daughter of a friend of ours and a great role model for her son. His mother was every bit the "strong black single woman" who "didn't raise her two sons to be part of the street". The funeral home was packed. You will be missed, Sean, but you are loved.

43 "I had the sad experience yesterday of attending the funeral of an Iraq War vet who was murdered by the incompetence of the VA."

Condolences.

He surely isn't alone in being horribly handled by that agency.

I occasionally point out that if you divide the annual budget of the VA by the number of veterans who are served as clients by the VA, you get a number around $58,000 per vet per year.

Even with Obamacare "Cadillac plan" taxes kicking in, 58 large would buy every single one of those vets an absolutely platinum-plated top of the line private sector health insurance policy that could be used in many more places than the disorganized dumps which the VA call "hospitals".

59 So about 10yrs ago my BiL started a monthly poker game at his house. Lots of fun, and over the years the guys became friends. People from all walks of life who never would have met each other otherwise.

Well, a year and a half ago my BiL unexpectedly died (massive heart attack). After a several month hiatus, the game continued at someone elses' house. But a couple of players had a trophy made. Very cool large cup with a hand rising out of the top holding a Royal Flush. And the trophy has my BiL's name on it.

So last Sat. I finally won the damn game, and I got the trophy for a month. And since Christmas Eve is always spent over at my sisters (and late BiL's) place, I'm going to surprise her with the trophy. I just think it's fitting for that to be at her place on such a night. I'm guessing there might be some tears...

Wife has her traditional oyster stew for tonight

My dad died in 95, he was the oyster stew maker, I haven't had any since. I think I'll try to do some tonight, I'm pretty sure I can remember how he did it, mostly butter pepper milk and oysters.

Thanks for triggering a little sweet memory for me. I w worshipped that man, for all his imperfections, especially since none were related to being a dad. Patience of a saint that one, he needed it for this one.

159 Morning all!

Condolences, Krebs..

On our local news last night, there was a piece where Ill. Senator Kirk was introducing a new health plan for vets.. But, after researching a bit, it seems to be limited in scope. You have to be 40 miles or more from a facility or have experienced long wait times.

As someone said above.. just buy these guys a Cadillac plan and be done with it. It would cost a lot less than than paying for this bureaucratic hole of the VA we keep throwing money into.

And Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah!

Our girls and their hubbies are coming over tonight.. lots of appetizers - including goat cheese, salmon, antipasto with tomatoes and crostini, etc..- and a ham.. tomorrow afternoon older daughter hosts Christmas dinner.

Have a happy and safe one! And take it light on the egg nog!

Most of those VA bureaucrats are there to a) swell the ranks of permanent D voters, b) award each other performance bonuses and c) ensure that none of the vets that actually need critical services aren't scamming the system and creating waste and fraud (independent of the bureaucracy approved waste and fraud).

I think Obama's approach to the military and the VA is based on his fundamentally transformational concept of rewarding his friends based on "What have these people done for me lately?" .

I do believe that is my last political post until after Christmas, else I will not maintain the proper spirit of the season.

Video is very deceiving.

For instance, the arguments we see when watching baseball games on TV aren't like what they are live.

Video has a way making things look subtle -- especially touch. How many times have you watched a boxing match and see a right hook barely land but it buckles the boxer's knees?

293 No one has any "standing", in any court of an Obama-appointed judge - where their lawsuits could impede "progress" in the fundamental transformation of America.

In the near future, when we're freezing in the dark due and the internet is dead due to a "North Korean" or "Iranian" EMP attack, we may not hear how a national civilian security force as strong and well funded as our military (once was) is systematically rounding up and executing certain Americans. What information networks weren't disabled may certainly be from active "Russian" or "Chinese" radio frequency jamming, though I can't be sure because my buddy who used to be a radio operator in the Army (who could have told me lots, as he also had a HAM radio station and knew all about frequency jamming) died of a heart attack last month because he wasn't able to acquire his medications and the local hospital had closed the year before. Well, we may not hear about any trouble or violence until we see the houses burning on one end of town and smell the ashes. Only then will some of us wonder why the hell we didn't 'do something'... anything... when we were strong and well fed and well rested and our ammunition lockers were full and most of our friends were still alive. Something to thwart the obvious sabotage of clearly anti-American Marxist revolutionaries in local and Federal government positions. Overt and obvious sabotage in which they openly and blatantly engaged, defying our very laws and Founding Principles... actions very clearly and specifically engineered to hamstring industry, throw social order in to chaos, and cripple our military - all, all of it to topple the United States of America. Enemy action from within our own government. Who would have ever thought...

420 Mr. Boom, what's fundamentally sound today that wasn't in '08?

What have we fixed?

We can employ people and run up indexes with artificial growth, but if we're booming, where's the consumer spending? Why did retailers get crushed this holiday season?

How do we keep this value, which is really all just bundled up on computers, when OPEC starts distorting much larger markets by depressing the price of energy?

How do we keep people employed with the courts, legislature, and White House are bent on destroying the US's competitive edge by tearing up our territorial intellectual property regime in what is an information economy?

What happens when interest rates tick up?

Nevermind getting our tax base up to pace with unfunded liabilities.

I realize you're trolling and you have no answers, but I gotta ask, more rhetorically or for anyone who's sitting on the fence - how are we more structurally sound than we were in the Bush years?

Nobody paying attention can answer that with a straight face. We put a few more two-by-fours off the edge of the cliff so we can walk another 12 feet. The cliff's still there.

426 Marry Christmas, everyone

The good news of the incarnation is that into the midst of real, everyday life God became flesh and dwelt among us. In the middle of the magic and messiness of life, God came. Into the realm of personal grief and family celebrations, God came. To those on the fringes of society, God came. To shepherds in fields and policemen on city streets, God came.

I pray that each of you will experience the wonder of the incarnation and the majesty of God's grace this Christmas. You may experience it this year in the quiet, personal moment of prayer after everyone has gone to sleep or in the boisterous, chaotic children's Christmas pageant. You may encounter this miracle in the glow of a candle-lit sanctuary or while washing dishes after the party is over and the family has all gone home. Stay alert. Listen closely. Open your heart. Do you hear what I hear? It is the whisper of grace that echoes through the centuries from a manger in Bethlehem.

If you want to say he isn't God's son or wasn't who the Bible claimed he is-that that's your perogative-although one wonders what's it your heart that makes you feel the need to say this on this sacred holy day that many people here celebrate. There is NO reputable Biblical scholar that suggests the historical person named Jesus didn't exist-merely people with axes to grind. Even ultra liberal Biblical scholars like "the Jesus Seminar" folks who vote on whether Jesus actually said some of the things credited to him, believe he existed. Even people like Bart Ehrman who is a Biblical scholar who critiques scripture and is far from an inerrantist as you can get thinks it's ridiculous nonsense to suggest Jesus didn't exist. The economy was slowing in Clinton's final year. But during the Bush years, the economy never had the GDP, job and wage growth it did under Clinton. Over the last year under Obama, the economy had 1999 levels of growth. Bush sucked on the economy and Obama is kicking ass.

486 >>I've been trying to eat oats for breakfast because they're good for you and they're cheap eats.

And they're awful. Like mush. Tasteless mush. It takes me a half hour to eat a bowl.<<

Consistency of oatmeal, if that's how you're cooking them, varies with how and how long you cook it. Don't use the 1 minute kind. Don't use instant.

Throw oats in after water is boiling to set the starch and make for a more textured and less slimy bowl of oatmeal. Putting oats in cold water dissolves a lot of oat starch into the water and that cooks into wallpaper paste as you boil.

If you _do_ like slimy oatmeal--and some do--put oats in water about halfway to boil.

Try boiling water, chip in an apple, throw in some raisins, a dash of salt and a couple sprinkles of cinnamon. After raisins have swelled a little, add oats and boil slowly for three minutes, then cover and let set for five.

Take the government out of the GDP and the economy shrank.

Oil is booming on private property, while the EPA shuts down coal plants and fracking.

The Dow is up because the government is printing money, making bonds a lousy investment and the market the only temporary place to shelter income.

Our corporate tax rate is the highest on the planet.
Government regulates the living shit out of everything and everyone, strangling real economic activity.

Even Jewish scholars think he existed.

Oh, there's always some crybaby who doesn't like that Jesus makes him feel guilty for living a life of sin. If He didn't exist, then why are his panties in a wad about it?

It is amazing to me how unself-aware these folks are, assuming that everyone will think they are so intelligent after 2,000 years of the world's best theologians and thinkers have covered this ground multiple times. After all, they MUST be smarter than anyone who has ever come across these documents before.

Plus, that Salon article is full of lies. There are concurrent mentions of Jesus from the first century, etc. If you have to lie to make your point, maybe your point isn't all that factual. Just sayin'.

Because even he couldn't stop it, though he stopped a lot of other drilling, oil pipelines, put lots of new regulations out to hamper the energy industry in general, etc. Also, note that we were talking about Democrats in general, not Obama specifically.

So, again: Why do you think that Democrats are better for the economy even though they are beholden to the greens to the point that they reflexively oppose any measure to increase energy production?
