Can A Mayor Run A Town Without The Support Of The Police?

It looks like we're going to find out in New York.

Maybe. I submit that the mayor of New York cannot govern the city without the support of the police. Does Bill de Blasio have that support? Consider this exchange, overheard yesterday at Woodhull Hospital in Brooklyn:

De Blasio: “We’re all in this together.”
Unnamed police officer: “No we’re not.”

This was after police officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu, shot by a crazed black Muslim named Ismaaiyl Brinsley, had been pronounced dead but before the mayor and his entourage made their way through a hospital corridor jammed with police who turned their backs on the mayor, shunning him.

Former Governor of New York George Pataki took to twitter to say:

Video of Police officers turning their back on De Blasio as he enters the hospital.

I remember there was a Simpsons episode where they went to New York. Homer hated New York because it was, well, a sh!thole where he was assaulted multiple times. Marge and the family loved it because hey it's clean and safe now! It was played for laughs, but I bet a lot of New Yorkers have forgotten what life was like back then, and are still thinking it won't happen to me.

I mean, traffic jams due to protesters are inconvenient, and okay so a couple of cops were shot... But it will all settle down and my life will not be bothered in the slightest.

NYC turned out something like 18% of registered voters during the last election. I know de Blasio won easily but a lot of that had to do with how few people actually bothered to vote.

If this follows the arc of the 60s and 70s, the city will descend further into the abyss until some new Rudy comes along to break a few eggs and clean up the mess. And then the cycle will repeat.

Maybe, but I wouldn't be surprised to find out that New Yorkers are starting to look around and realize that a can of great big ugly worms has just been opened, and that it's not closing for a while.

And, yes, Mayor Deblahblahblah deserves his fair share of the blame for this. The MFM deserves more. Had they reported "just the facts, ma'am" in both the Michael Brown and Eric Garner cases, neither would have gained anywhere near the sympathy it did.

Instead, they supported thugs whose skin melanin content happens to comport with that of a racial grievance group and portrayed them as innocent victims of police violence.

And the hypocrisy on this is astounding. When a Muslim takes over a dozen people hostage, the MFM immediately tells us not to "rush to judgement" because they just know- KNOW- that White Males are barely restrained balls of hate and rage which will lash out at minorities at the slightest provocation. Yet when their "bad guy" *is* a white male or some "part of the system" then they do everything they can to portray their selected victim- and not just him, but all White Males and/or "parts of the system" as only evil all the time.

Which has predictable consequences.

56 And Obama is doing the same thing with Border Patrol. Despite Fast and Furious, he's been siding with the illegals for years. And look at the chaos this has caused - illegals knowing that Border Patrol can't fight back as hard (bean bag guns vs. heavily armed cartels) and that they'll be released, so they're taunting them, of escalating to things like the agent being hit in the head w/a rock. Also, they're now being exposed to all sorts of foreign diseases now that they're also serving as child care for the mass on unaccompanied minors. I bet there's a lot more we just don't know about thanks to MSM.

But back to the topic at hand...

I hate the hypocrisy of the gun grabbers. They are only able to cry about private citizens owning guns... because of private citizens owning guns. Yet that thought never once occurs to them. If they *really* had what they think they want, they'd be crushed under the authoritarian bootheel, too. They have the freedom (including the time) to cry and whine about "guns kill people" because private citizens took up arms and threw off a tyrannical government. Our own government has not yet become the worst of tyrannies because private citizens could still take up arms.

We have this tradition in the US of constantly swinging to extremes only to miss the middle each and every time.

So we've reached what I'll call "peak cop" after the crimewave of the 80s. And now, tiring of that, the Balko/Reason contingent (who I sometimes agree with even) will rule the day and order will be maintained by cops with water pistols.

Then crime will break out and we'll arm up the cops again, until we tire of it.

Frankly, I'm sick of both extremes. Balko and his crowd are naïve beyond all comprehension. But I don't want to live in a country where police are omnipresent either.

Sadly, we'll never find the sweet spot.

114 De Blasio is the terminal end of progressivism.

"If we just elected a purer liberal, it'd work." Well, you've got him. The ultimate populist divorced from any practical constraint. Now you get a city that's already climaxed is being brought back to earth at an ever-quickening pace by his partisan rhetoric and mismanagement.

The only people who want to go to that city are top-tier grads from top-tier schools who make a buck and a half straight out of school on the low end and aren't worried about saving yet. Luckily, the internets have made it such that we don't have to be on Wall Street to trade or practice effectively any longer. Those of us who to whom still applies are much more drawn to affordable cities where we can do the same work without the insane markups and inescapable smell of piss.

Smart people are fleeing the upper-crust liberal utopias. Eventually there's not going to be a big enough pay differential to lure idiots in to come get robbed by government and gangbangers alike. While many smaller cities still lean blue, at least one can still live in them affordably.

The cycle of greatness is a funny thing. New York, Chicago, and many of California's metropolises have sneered at smaller cities in flyover country for the better part of a generation. But we'll see it flip again in the next generation. The limits of city pride get strained when tax rates and crime skyrocket. Producers have no place in these liberal hellholes.

118 >>Paraphrasing Insty, I would say that "repeating the 60's" is now a best-case scenario. I personally think it will be worse this time around. Much worse.

Possible. But the period of late 60s into the 70s was pretty fucking bad. We were living in the NY/NJ metro area and lots of areas in the cities were no go zones. Not just NYC but the big cities of NJ were also semi war zones.

We moved to NJ when I was in middle school in the late 60s and the high school in my town was closed multiple times for race fights. Not just fist fights, knife fights and the like. My own middle school was a constant battle zone based on race. We even had two principals, one for the white kids and one for the black kids. None of the geniuses in charge could figure out why this was a tremendously bad idea.

And it wasn't just NY. Watts burned, Detroit was Detroit, Kent State, the Weather Underground bombings, Black Panthers doing all sorts of violence including Joanne Chesimard gunning down a NJ State Trooper and then fleeing to Cuba where she was supported by the Ayers clan.

I think what we are living through now is the violent left of the 60s and 70s now with the reins of power. If we don't get our shit together soon it could very well be worse than last time.

123 Then all of the retractions and corrections can't fix the first narrative that sets in the minds of the LIVs.

Actually, I disagree with that. Or, perhaps better said, I don't know that it has been proven.

The "retractions and corrections" always run on page 18f in 4-point font. No one ever sees them. If the NYT ran an article: "New Evidence: He Was a Thug" then a very large number of the LIVs *would* hear that and would change their minds.

But, like The Duke in The Shootist, most people "have a paper delivered every single day, and never get the full use outta one."

New York is a f*cking liberal shithole that is leading the campaign to take this country down. Anything that destroys the power, prestige, and influence of NYC is directly to my personal good, as is the downfall of any of my enemies.

No, New Yorkers are NOT my countrymen. That is one of the strongholds of my enemies. Just like the middle east - let it burn. The good ones can leave and come to someplace that will appreciate them, and the bad majority can go straight to hell.

And to that end we went from "too much crime" to "too much police."

Now the "community policing" nuts are out there, so we'll go to "neutered police" and "too much crime" again.

167 The NAACP put out a statement advocating for gun control.

After weeks of trashing the police, now they want the police to be the only ones with guns.

Methinks the middle 'A' is for Asinine.

No, it's all part of the plan. The ultimate goal is for agents of the state to have a monopoly on the use of force. An armed and self reliant population threatens the plans of statists. But a population is easily controlled when docile and trusting in agents of the state to keep the peace.

An armed populace is essential to liberty because a taxpayer funded defense force will always turn on the people in the end. The tendency to leap to the defense of (what have historically been culturally conservative) authority figures will be our downfall before long.

The enemy of my enemy is not necessarily my friend.

Agreed.

I was born in the early 60's and live in rural Ohio about an hour from KSU. My (reliable) memories of political events basically start with the Watergate era in the early 70's, during which time I remember my family basically steering clear of any of the Ohio urban areas (especially Cleveland) because of the high incidence of violent crime, riots, etc.

Normally in the past, when evil elements appeared in a community, the rest of the community banded together to oppose them. I don't see that happening now. Communities are devolving into ever smaller disjointed groups seeking they're own interests (good or bad), and are not linking together to oppose the evil elements. I this occurred in the 60's and continues now to an even larger extent. And as the old saying goes, "all it takes for evil to flourish is for good men to do nothing."

They did. But I'm not kidding about Texan response to riots. Forget "one riot, one Ranger" anymore. The Rangers would come in to clean up the mess.

The Dallas chapter of Racial Grievance Industry, Inc is much more focused on Racial Grievance as a means toward money. There's not as much daylight between a Dallas Republican and a Dallas Democrat as there is between (say) a NYC Republican and a NYC Democrat.

And riots are bad for business. Something that the Perots, Basses, Vandergriffs, and other big-money families in the DFW Metroplex would make very, very clear.

Seriously, I think it's going to take a lot more shit-stirring (and most it very targeted AT Texas) to get Texas anywhere near the same level as Ferguson, MO, or NYC.

Even among those who thought that Zimmerman was probably in the wrong in the Trayvon Martin case, the general consensus among those around me (Liberal and Conservative) was, "...so don't mess with a man who might have a gun."

What the left here is seeking is the status quo in Europe; reports indicating violence perpetrated by Muslims is suppressed, because the result was unpalatable. People being prosecuted for free speech.

219 You people constantly talk about moving like it's the easiest fucking thing in the world to do.

No. We talk about it like it can be made a priority and can be done.

I have this same argument with my B-i-L in Michigan. Actually, more I have a discussion with him, he'd love to move. His wife is the one married to Michigan.

And there will *always* be reasons not to move. You family is where it is. Your friends are there. In many cases (maybe not *yours* ) your job is there.

But you have to accept that's a choice you make. Proximity to your family and your current friends is a higher priority to you than moving to escape the racial/political climate.

And I won't say that's not a legitimate choice. But it *is* a choice.

2) Finish dissertation as fast as possible. (Brother graduates from same university in 2016, wonder if we can double up.)

So that's wherever life takes me I guess. But the wife is far to tied to an industry that exists only in 2 places: here and DC. Maybe KC if she tries to get into private industry receivers (but that's not where her skill set lies. Also KC is worse than here.)

I confess though I'm blessed to have these choices. Most people wouldn't be able to stay home 4 days a week and care for their kid.
And even less would be in a position where the career effects will be somewhat minimal.

There is this overriding fantasy of, well, the left and associated useful idiots in the West that feels certain that were Satan seated on the Throne of God, he would behave as God does.
From this the idea is that if various groups with an announced agenda of theft, murder, mayhem, genocide, and destruction of everything were given the levers of power to use without limit they would become rational and responsible because the have this power.

That this has led to such wonderful things like the bad Caesars, the French Terror, Nazi Germany and Pol Pot's Cambodia is completely besides the point.

Which means these people are completely unfit to guard over a burnt out match much less run for elected office, or any position of responsibility.

In the days of the founders, the country was pretty well balkanized at the beginning. What did Massachusetts, which required membership in the Congregational Church to vote or hold office have in common with patrician, slave holding Virginia or Catholic dominated Maryland?

That is why the founders wrote the Constitution to set up a Federal system where most decisions happen at the state level. Starting with the Progressives in the early 20th century and getting into high gear with Woodrow Wilson, power was gathered from the states into the central government. That process accelerated under FDR and even more so under LBJ.

The way to allow a balkanized country to survive is to devolve power from Washington DC back down to the states. Naturally, the megalomaniacs who have been drawn to DC due to their quest for power over other people will resist any attempt to pry their fingers from the levers of power. Party affiliation is less important than desire for concentrated power in the central government.

Hell... because of inherent discipline, they were even able to target the Military, by taking legal command and telling them to 'shut up'.

That's one reason i really liked Perry for Prez last go round.

His big selling point was to return as much power to the states as possible.

And honestly, that's the best way-

if New Yorkers for instance want to pay their citizens to layabout all day...well, why not?

Just as long as they aren't forcing Texans to do the same.

And vice-versa.

I just wonder if the new and improved Perry this go round has been homogenized into the GOP statist Borg complex yet.

Or if he holds true to his stated beliefs?

Eh, I got no problem "celebrating differences."

We aren't the borg after all.

My problem is when we decide that those "differences" deserve special treatment.

By all means, make your cultural food, throw your cultural party, but know that the law is enforced equally.

Setting aside the anarchists and the socialists coopting these protests for second. The remainder wants special treatment. They won't simply stop at equality.

They want exemption from drug laws, from traffic violations, etc.

Which reminds me.

As I said, there's a shit ton of nuance in these whole situations.

But I lost my shit at a friend the other day when he simply couldn't understand why selling "loosies" was a crime.

He kept insisting "well the taxes were paid."

I finally just launched at him, telling him "I know you've never worn a blue collar a day in your life, and that the seedy underbelly of the world is something you think exits only to set the stage for fiction..." and explained, loudly: that's now how taxes work.

Part of the problem is that many of the people railing against this issue (and I think there are a myriad of problems here) simply don't understand what's actually going on.

They don't understand how excessively taxed cigarettes give rise to a black market (which consists of cigarettes legally purchased in another area).

They don't understand how this black market competition hurts businesses playing by the rules.

It's absurdity.

Another possibility is that NYC cops take jobs in other cities. I recall that in 1975 when flirting with bankruptcy, New York City fired 1500 police officers. They all had jobs elsewhere because of their training and experience as well as the selection process that they went through before hiring.

What happens when cops who are young enough that they do not have too many years invested in the pension plan and can start again elsewhere as well as cops who already qualify to retire decide to leave and work elsewhere?

Mayor deBlasio can use the opportunity to fill the NYPD with new recruits who are more suited to his taste. Is that likely to make NYC a better or worse place to live and do business?

Like most leftist ideas it's also an inherently flawed one. Raising the price of tobacco to ridiculous levels makes people quit and therefore generates less tax income, so they raise it more to make up the difference and more people quit.

As was intended and orchestrated by the Comintern in the late 1940s. Read "School of Darkness" by Bella Dodd, a distaff version of Whitaker Chambers. The book is available free online, but here's the operative part (http://genus.cogia.net/chap13.php):

"Earl Browder at the convention of 1944 had insisted on the
elimination of a sense of difference among the foreign-born and had
moved to have them treated as part of the American labor movement. To
this Professors Berti and Donnini [two visiting Italians] offered strenuous objections. They
emphasized the importance of separate national organizations, of
encouraging the foreign-born to use their languages, and of circulating
foreign-language newspapers. They encouraged the organizing of the
different national groups almost as if these were foreign colonies. It
would strengthen the sense of nationalism among them, they asserted, a
necessary thing for the building of world communism.

These two Party functionaries found themselves on the carpet for
their unwelcome views. Plans were on foot to expel them. Then, suddenly,
came the amazing news that they were members of the Italian Communist
Party! Up to this point, like others, I had regarded them as honest but
misguided foreigners with a penchant for disputation.

Now I realized that nothing they said had been unpremeditated,
and that they were not speaking for themselves. They represented the
International Communist movement and it was clear that Browder's
approach to the national problem was in disfavor with some sections of
world communism."

406 It seems sometimes that some all powerful all seeing entity decides what would be the most disheartening, most explosive and most misleading incident that would lead to all the wrong decisions being made or certain decisions not being made and then causes that to happen.

Police are out of control in many places. They violently and thoughtlessly act with impunity. Repeatedly we have seen them murder civilians or animals, arrest bystanders and over charge the innocent or low level miscreant. This along with prosecutorial misconduct and a lack of someone in charge of oversight of the police besides the police departments or Prosecutors office is the bases for the rising anti police attitude. And it's justified.

But it doesn't justify murder or assault or any other form of retribution against the Police. Simply a drive for oversight and justice now seems out of reach under any circumstance.

Now with a couple of bullets some mad black (and lucky) Muslim has derailed the tide that was swelling for some answers to be found for the problem of Police oversight and justice nationwide.

No politician with any instinct for self preservation will touch any sort of Police oversight or investigation. Nor will there be any sponsorship of laws investigating or panels to look into the problem.

Now it will only get worse and the people will be audience to further abuses with no justice or oversight and eventually that dam will burst against only with far greater likelihood of violence being the result. The Police will see themselves more and more as the target of any and every citizen they have interaction with and this will bring about more acts of violence and retribution by the Police and eventually by citizens who are not evil looking to destroy society but simple people pushed into a corner by an uncaring bureaucracy that has guns.

There does seem to be a Devil or some malignant daemon in the universe. And given Obama's latest speech, it's not him (or at least not him saying and inciting those who would do the most harm.)

This wasn't likely beforehand. I'd agree that there are serious problems, and most are intractable. The stupidity of violent raids make sense......only where they make sense. Everywhere else, the police get the same, deserved reputation as the TSA. Many of the cases of abuse of women and innocent homeowners have been ignored, because the peasantry simply isn't represented in the justice system. Crime victims ave noted this for years. Strangely, vicious criminals get more representation and better treatment then vioent crime survivors and the wrongly accused.
That includes the celebrity status accorded to Mumia abu Jamal, while Office Daniel Faulkners' widow has to fight for the crime to even be remembered. Roman Polanski is even worse, in a way.

Okay. It's labor intensive, so be prepared:

Saute one lb. of applewood smoked bacon (cut in 1" pieces) until the fat is rendered but the bacon is not crisp. Drain the bacon and fat with a fine sieve.

Saute one medium Vidalia onion in a tablespoon of bacon fat for about 10 minutes until translucent and beginning to brown.

Add three cloves of minced garlic, 1 tsp. dry rosemary, 1 tsp. red pepper flakes, 1/4 c. dark brown sugar, 1/4 c. freshly brewed strong coffee, 2 T. Coca-Cola, 1/4 c. balsamic vinegar, 1/4 maple syrup. Stir and bring to a light boil. Add the bacon and turn down to medium low. Keep a steady simmer and cook until the liquid is reduced. This can take as long as an hour.

After it's reduced, add 2 T. bourbon and let cool for 20 minutes.

And you have bacon jam.

It will also destroy the reputation of professionalism for the NYPD which means that NYC cops who want to get out should probably do so while the getting is good. A similar dynamic probably holds for NYC real estate. If you feel that deBlasio is a temporary blip, you probably want to wait out the storm. If you think that NYC is in for another multi-decade adventure like the period before Giuliani, you might want to sell now before the prices crater.

One difference between now and the previous period of NYC gone feral is that modern telecom makes it far less necessary for elements of the financial industry to be in physical proximity to each other. 432 Back

Training was poor, of course. Mostly just here's how to use these scanners and forms with little in the way of what to do if there's no power. Because emergencies always take place in idyllic conditions.

I did find it interesting that, should the power go out and we were using paper forms, there was no preplanned method for determining who gets what kind of medication based on prior conditions. Trainer discussed using see-thru overlays on the form, which, I guess, is more or less what the computer was doiong anyway.

I created a 113yo pregnant male to see if the computer noticed. It didn't.

I've seen studies that antibodies can survive for upwards of 90 days, which gets one considerably closer to vaccination date.

523 #Shirtstorm: In mid-November scientists managed, for the first time in human history, to land a robot on a comet hurtling through space some 25 million miles away from Earth. But the reaction of feminists was: Who cares? They were fixated on the fact that one of the physicists, Matt Taylor, wore a shirt printed with ladies in lingerie during a live screening of the feat. A blitzkrieg of Taylor-bashing Twitter-bombing ensued, on the theory that the shirt somehow discouraged women from entering STEM fields. Yes, feminists thought the best way to entice women into STEM was to disparage a monumental STEM achievement.

Maybe going forward...but I'm talking about a mass prisoner release.

Posted by: fixerupper at December 22, 2014 09:30 AM (NaV4z)

The travel ban might be different now, but be sure to ....

TAKE toilet paper (Cuba is a bring your own toilet paper country)
along with any other toiletries (i.e. soap, shampoo, etc) you may need.

Simply, imagine you are going on a camping trip to Cuba in 1960

Shakedown Street is the result of too many drugs and too many cheeseburgers. I like to pretend it didn't really happen.

I see this response far too often.

Everybody votes in every election.

Failure to take the time to cast a ballot at a polling station is still a vote.

These people, through their inaction, are implying that they are satisfied with the status quo and the resulting outcome of the election.

558 Giuliani . . .

So NYC should go with a Mayor who thinks the 2nd Amendment doesn't apply within his demesne?

NYC should go with a Mayor who tries to use a terrorist attack to cancel an election?

NYC should go with a Mayor who prompts a massive increase in FOIA suits then conspires with his "Republican" successor to lock up his papers?

NYC should go with a Mayor who fires a succession of competent police commissioners until he finds one corrupt enough to just shut up and let the Mayor take all the credit?

And, perhaps the biggest with some people now questioning the "broken windows" theory of policing, NYC should go with a Mayor who based his whole program on that (plus judicious abuse of perp walks of course)?

I'm kind of baffled as to why people continue to think Giuliani was a conservative, or even a Republican.
