1 Good Morning Morons. Today is Monday, December 22, 2014. A "this day" appropriate for our times today. On this day in 1984 Bernhard Goetz shot four black would-be muggers on an express train in Manhattan section of New York, New York. Goetz was found innocent on multiple charges including murder. He was found guilty of carrying an "unlicensed" firearm in NYC. (Oh my can't have that unless you are rich or a politician) He served 8 months of the 1 year sentence for that. One of the shot "yoots" later sued and in a jury packed mostly with blacks was found liable and the yoot was awarded $43M. Goetz declared bankruptcy in which the judge said his $43M civil liability could not be discharged under bankruptcy. When later asked about the payments Goetz said he had not paid a penny and it is probable that he never did. So what is the moral of the story? If you shoot a black in NYC you are going to jail and bankruptcy. Your best bet is to not live in NYC.

6 "Peaceful" Protesters Wanted Blood? They Got It.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio met with the organizers of these "peaceful" protests that marched against the Grand Jury's decision not to indict police officers for the death of Eric Garner. Unsurprisingly targeted the police for "retraining."

During the "peaceful" protest the mob openly screamed: "What do we want? Dead cops! When do we want it? Right Now!"

The gunman who is responsible for the death of two innocents during the Sydney siege was a "Muslim Cleric & Peace Activist" who displayed an Islamic flag during the siege, and openly sides with the Islamic State, demanded the flag of the Islamic State, and even went so far as to demand recognition of the siege as an attack by the Islamic State.

29 A Memphis black threatens to kill NYC cops on a social media site and is "questioned by police". This is actually a federal felony. Was he arrested? No. Was he fired? No. Why not?

Lofton reportedly told police the threat was false and made while he had been drinking and smoking pot.

I didn't know that laws had a get out of jail free card if you were drinking and smoking ganja when you committed the crime.

For those not familiar with this law here is a synopsis.

18 U.S.C. § 875(c) states: Whoever transmits in interstate or foreign commerce any communication containing any threat to kidnap any person or any threat to injure the person of another, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both.

Naturally, some distrust of any statement from any agency is justifiable in the current climate. I have friends in NSA and don't see them as quite the bogeyman most do.

Bernie Goetz is one of my heroes. That incident, for me, marked the beginning of the city's renaissance that came to a halt on 9/11/01 but perhaps the more the day that Rudy Giuliani left office.

Interesting sidenote, about a year after the incident, I was about to get on an uptown 2 train at 14th Street when Bernie Goetz walked out. Felt like clapping him on the shoulder and saying well done but that's not someone you want to startle.

120 Should have a gauge on it - as long as the needle is in the green, you're good.
CO2 extinguishers need to be weighed to check, the full-charge weight is stamped somewhere on it.
Ansul dry-chem units store the pressure in a cartridge separate from the powder - weigh the cartridge.

And besides upsizing extinguishers, I like redundancy as well; we have two upstairs, two downstairs, two in the basement, and one in the garage. Did I mention one in each car ?

Cheapest form of insurance known.

For CO2 extinguishers, check the pressure gauge. It should be in the green (good) area.

For powder ones, invert monthly and pound the bottom to break up the settled and agglomerated powder. A rubber mallet works fine, or use your hand if you are tough. Free flowing powder and good propellent pressure (green on the gauge) is what you want for most extinguishers.

137 Can't emphasize that fire safety aspect enough. Make sure your kitchen extinguisher is rated for grease fires (watch that ABC thing). Water turns grease fires into explosions. Yes, up size, and go to a real fire-safety vendor for your equipment.

I bought a brand-name extinguisher on sale, from a trustworthy department store, and it had a flaw in the tank metal (poorly-drawn tube, I think, and made in USA at that), then subjected myself to the embarrassment of having to go to the real dealer for warranty service. They were helpful as anything, but I still ended up having to scrap it and buy new (Mexican, this time, as it turned out). No more bargains.

I keep a couple of heavy-duty cloth bags full of sand next to the woodstove. Cooking fires and chimney fires throw off stuff that extinguishers don't deal with easily. Don't be afraid to look "anal" about fire. Anal fires hurt like a bitch.
