Overnight Open Thread (12-21-2014)

Quote of the Day

The two officers [Wenjin Liu & Rafael Ramos] were pronounced dead at Woodhull Hospital, where their colleagues and family members huddled tearfully.

City Council President Melissa Mark-Viverito and Mayor Bill de Blasio were less than welcome guests at the poignant gathering.

"We're all in this together," the mayor told grieving cops, according to a cop who was there.

"No we're not," one officer said tersely in response.

-- "Gunman executes 2 NYPD cops as 'revenge' for Garner," in the New York Post.

NYPD Union Chief: Mayor de Blasio Has Blood on his Hands

A throng of NYPD officers at New York's Woodhull Hospital turned their backs on Mayor Bill de Blasio as he arrived at a press conference on the execution-style murder of two New York cops, with police union president Pat Lynch claiming the mayor has "blood on [his] hands."

...Many NYPD officers were angry at de Blasio even before the killings, accusing the mayor of inciting weeks of protests and maligning an entire police department after a Staten Island grand jury decided not to try the cop who killed Garner.

And of course: De Blasio Attacks NYPD Officers That Turned Their Backs on Him

And why is the NYPD so angry at de Blasio? Mainly it has to do with the fact that he relies on the efforts of the police in keeping crime at an all-time low for his popularity yet at every opportunity he criticizes them and recently has been encouraging anti-NYPD protesters even as they chanted, "What do we want? Dead cops. When do we want it? Now!" He even met with protester group leaders secretly making promises to them while talking out the other side of his mouth in public. And the NYPD rank and file have had just about enough of his public defamation of them.

Matthew Hennessey explains in City on the Brink how the anti-cop attitudes among the city's progressive elites have created a rift between police on the streets and the city government.

And Neo-neocon points out that we may be returning to the 70s when 'revolutionary' assassination of police by groups such as the BLA were a regular threat. And there are hints that the NYPD may simply stop doing any more active policing:

"At least two units are to respond to EVERY call, no matter the condition or severity, no matter what type of job is pending, or what the opinion of the patrol supervisor happens to be," an e-mail widely circulated among cops advised Saturday night.

...The memo also pointed to potential slowdowns in arrest and ticketing activity: "IN ADDITION: Absolutely NO enforcement action in the form of arrests and or summonses is to be taken unless absolutely necessary and an individual MUST be placed under arrest," the statement said.

"These are precautions that were taken in the 1970s when police officers were ambushed and executed on a regular basis," the statement added.

Jonathon Last on Sony Pulling the Interview

I'm being flip here, but the truth is that I'm very, very sympathetic to Sony and the theater owners and if I were in their position, I would have done something very similar. Because this threat-however un-credible it is-points to an existential vulnerability of modern film-making.

...In one of the stories about The Interview a security consultant was quoted noting that while America has done a good job "hardening" big sporting events and airports, lots of targets-like shopping malls and movie theaters-remain soft, and are in need of hardening.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I suspect that people would not tolerate the "hardening" of the multiplex. They'd just stay away from it.

Which points to the real problem: You cannot "harden" the whole of American life. That's a logistical impossibility in a country this size. What you could do, in theory, is harden the American people. But I'm doubtful about that, too. This isn't a judgment; just an observation.

As a wise man once said, "Peace has cost you your strength; victory has defeated you."

Intimidating a studio to drop a film is outrageous - unless the Clintons do it

Mandy Rice-Davies of the Profumo Affair Dies at 70

Famous for the Profumo Affair (she was the roommate of Christine Keeler) and her dismissal of Lord Astor:

She became notorious for claiming to have had an affair with Lord Astor and for dismissing his denial when in the witness box during the trial at the Old Bailey.

When told he had denied the affair, she famously retorted: "Well he would, wouldn't he?"

The quote was later added to the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations.

As for the Affair itself I'll let Mark Steyn explain:

It began like a movie: July 8th 1961. An unusually warm evening at a grand country estate. A girl in the swimming pool. She pulls herself up out of the water. She's beautiful, and naked. A larky lad in the water has tossed her bathing costume into the bushes. And among the blasé weekend guests dressed for dinner and taking a stroll on the terrace one man reacts with more than nonchalant amusement as the girl hastily wraps a towel around her. She leaves with someone else the next day. But not before the man on the terrace has enquired after her name.

It was Christine Keeler. The house was Cliveden, country home of Lord Astor. The name of the fellow who threw away her swimsuit was Stephen Ward, to whom Bill Astor had rented a cottage on the estate for one pound a year. Ward was, formally, a society osteopath and basked in the dingy glow of reflected celebrity: his client list included Winston Churchill, Anthony Eden, and, when in town, Averell Harriman, Elizabeth Taylor and Frank Sinatra. The man in the dinner jacket so taken by the girl in the dripping towel was the Right Honorable John Profumo, Her Majesty's Secretary of State for War. The man the girl left with was another guest of Stephen Ward's, Yevgeny Ivanov.

Miss Keeler was a showgirl at Murray's cabaret club in Soho. Commander Ivanov was the Soviet naval attaché in London. "Showgirl" was a euphemism for call girl, "naval attaché" a euphemism for KGB intelligence officer.

It's hard to devise a precise contemporary parallel for "the Profumo affair" - imagine Donald Rumsfeld is having an affair with one of Mullah Omar's wives? - but in London it became the standard by which were measured all subsequent political sex scandals.

...In 1963, "Profumo" was shorthand for establishment hypocrisy. Across 40 years, he reclaimed the narrative, as a story of shame and redemption, of acting honorably, making the best of a sticky wicket and all the other allegedly obsolescent virtues of his class the sex and hookers had supposedly rendered risible. Had Stephen Ward not thrown a teenage girl's bathing suit into the topiary, John Profumo would have been noted as the last surviving member of the House of Commons to vote in the confidence motion of May 8th 1940, after the fall of Norway. He was one of only 30 Conservative MPs to join the opposition in declining to support the continued leadership of Neville Chamberlain and thus to usher Churchill into Downing Street. That vote changed the course of the war. But instead his place in history is as the man who saw a call-girl naked in a swimming pool.

Ibuprofen: The Key to a Longer Life?

In a series of experiments, the popular painkiller extended the life of yeast, worms and flies by around 15 per cent.

What is more, the extra years were healthy ones.

In human terms, this would equate to an extra 12 years of good quality life. Put another way, people would be in good health for longer.

It also seems to help prevent skin cancer.

11 I'm going to post the texts my husband sent me from Walmart.

"So my line was held up when a guy was disputing the cost of an item. It was ticketed at 5.99 but he was charged a little of 6. Turns out, it was the tax. This was hard for him to accept, but once he realized it, the purchase was no longer economically reasonable. So everything had to be reset. "

Maybe the reason our message of lower taxes isn't reaching the LIVs is because they're so low information they don't even understand the existence of taxation.

I'd advise that everyone avoid acetaminophen whenever possible. It has the lowest differential between "clinical dose" [the amount when it does any measurable good] and "LD-50" [when it kills half of those who receive the specified amount] of any OTC drug, and is either the #1 or #2 cause of acute liver failure in the US and UK every year. There are many safer and more effective alternatives, and its recurrent popularity is strong circumstantial proof that "the fix is in" with medications.

Even get to see the camera rig they used to give a field of depth feeling to their movies. And when they went through the paint department, then you truly appreciate the concept of Technicolor.

77 The good news is real estate prices are headed down in NYC over the next 3 years.

I'd feel terrible about the next generation and the transplants; they have no idea what's coming or how to survive it, but they voted for this, so (shrug).

Every native NY'er my age knows how to survive, and even thrive, in the coming chaos. There is going to be an evolutionary reckoning in NYC.

96 So, weird question for the Horde -- the fiancee snuck a widget into our office supplies area and I had a helluva time figuring out WTF had happened. Hallucinatory kleptomania was a possibility, but I managed to narrow it down.....and she readily admitted dropping a family heirloom there for me to "put away", despite never having seen it before.

Anyway, what the widget looks like is a pair of scissors. It's heavy-duty, looks somewhat antique, and has some decorative elements to it. There's a leaf-spring to open it. There's a bit of an offset, so it that your hand doesn't rub the work that you're doing while you're using 'em.....and here's the kicker -- the top blade looks like any pair of heavy sewing scissors that you might have around, but the bottom blade is twice as long and rotated 90 degrees so that it lays flat.

Trying this again because it's odd. The top blade is about 1/2" tall, and tapers from about 1/8" wide at the top to a sharp edge at the bottom, and is about 2-1/2" long. The bottom blade is about 5" long, and about 1/2" wide perpendicular to the top blade. The bottom blade's edge where they meet is only about 1/8" thick.

Anyone have any idea what this is? The closest I've found so-far is "bandage-cutting scissors".

Anyone under 45 doesn't remember the urban decay of the 60's and 70's because by the time they were teenagers, the cities for the most part had been cleaned up due to proactive police work.

Now they just remember that proactive police work means that the NYPD targeted black males only because "racism". They don't know that the NYPD was targeting all young males since they were the ones most likely to commit violent crimes. Once the dickheads were locked up, crime dropped.

Again, the kiddies only think that the cops/DA's were putting guys away for life for having a joint on them. No, they stabbed someone, robbed a bodega, and then were caught with 3 lbs of dope and a kilo of coke. In the desire to speed things up, they took a plea bargain where they copped to simple possession.

I saw him two days ago when I brought him his Surface Pro 3 and got him set up on the local WiFi. I also loaded up a 64GB microSD card with videos and e-books for the Nook app.

Which points to the real problem: You cannot "harden" the whole of
American life. That's a logistical impossibility in a country this size.
What you could do, in theory, is harden the American people. But I'm
doubtful about that, too. This isn't a judgment; just an observation. As a wise man once said, "Peace has cost you your strength; victory has defeated you."

Posted by: Ricardo Kill at December 21, 2014 10:34 PM (BNIaE)

I'd
advise that everyone avoid acetaminophen whenever possible. It has the
lowest differential between "clinical dose" [the amount when it does any
measurable good] and "LD-50" [when it kills half of those who receive
the specified amount] of any OTC drug, and is either the #1 or #2 cause
of acute liver failure in the US and UK every year. There are many safer
and more effective alternatives, and its recurrent popularity is strong
circumstantial proof that "the fix is in" with medications.

Posted by: cthulhu at December 21, 2014 10:42 PM (T1005)

Like I said -- I see it on the label, the shit containing it goes in the toilet. I won't have it in my house.
As an additional little gem -- it occupies a peculiar little niche in suicides, in that it is close to irreversible without a liver transplant, but can lead to a prolonged and ugly end. Accordingly, people with other ugly terminal conditions will sometimes use it as the ultimate DNR order.

Within a minute, I get a rather snide response from Bathtub Boy himself, and issue two more rounds of cheap-shot trolling. He has the self-control of a mean 12-year-old girl when some other 12-year-old goes THERE first. Oh no you ditt-int!

Check @KeithOlbermann or @JohannaLapp if you care in the slightest. I'd probably be ashamed of myself were he not such a dickless blusterer. Keith, have a nice hot cup of chill.

285 My Christmas tree stopped working.

It's just a little Charlie Brown-sized artificial tree with attached lights and miniature ornaments. I found it in the attic and have been using it for at least 10 years. I don't know how old it is. It was convenient since all I had to do was set it on the windowsill and plug it in.

I thought it might be one of those deals where if one bulb burns out, the whole string goes out. There were two replacement bulbs that came with it. I started replacing bulbs, but then one of the bulbs pulled loose from its holder, and I can't get the holder out of the socket. So I guess it's time to replace the tree.

Anybody have any ideas about a replacement?

Are those the tiny bulbs with a green plastic base formed into two prongs, with a strand of copper wire emerging from the end of the prong and folded back along the side of it? Needle-nose pliers might work to remove the errant base. If it is a threaded metal base, put some 5-minute epoxy on the end of a suitably-sized wooden stick, force it into the broken base, and allow it to set. Unscrew once it has set.

I just tried that, and it worked. So I set about trying a replacement bulb in each socket, but I soon became confused as to which ones I had tried and which ones I hadn't.

I then decided that the only way to do a thorough job was to remove the lights from the tree and try them one by one. After I had unwrapped the cord enough to get four bulbs off the tree, the lights suddenly came back on. I re-wrapped the cord around the tree and set it up in the window again, and it's working now. It's all good. The joys of series-string Christmas lights. Had them when I was a kid. What I did then was take a known good bulb, and use it to replace a bulb at one end of the string. If the string lit, well, that was the dead bulb. If not, then the removed bulb was used to replace #2 in the string. Repeat until the string comes good; the bulb in your hand at that point is the dead one, so throw it away.

462 Because I am a sucker where Appleseed is involved...

Against my better judgement, I just finished watching 'Appleseed Alpha'. Dub only on the blu-ray. Oddly enough, even though there are multiple language options (French, German, Spanish), Japanese isn't one of them. The story's passable - which, unfortunately, seems to be par for the course whenever we get another animated Appleseed treatment. It doesn't clash with the manga continuity *too* badly. The only real "can't be hand-waved away" continuity conflict I noted off the top of my head is that in the manga, Deunan and Briareos have never heard of Olympus when Hitomi finds them. In Alpha, there are rumors running rampant about the existence of the city even before the story starts. And the post-credits stinger gives us yet another lame justification for the title. I wish they'd give up on that.

And, of course, since the third thing that always pops to mind when discussing Appleseed (right after Briareos and Deunan) is *spoiler*, we have *spoiler* turn up mid-way through the movie. I wish they'd used something else instead.

The animation does look nice. It's all 3D CGI. And while it's obvious that you're not looking at real people, it's still pretty slick. In contrast with Ghost in the Shell, Appleseed has cyborgs that don't disguise their part-machine nature. Shirow came up with a wide variety of styles and parts, and many of his designs end up reused in the movie. The animation team did a good job with them, and they never look like something that shouldn't work.

464 The NYPD should start by not patrolling 30 Rockefeller - at all - and also announce that the City Hall and the Mayor's residence is over and above their ability to secure, so they'll only respond to a call for an arrest or a coroner.

They should also specifically announce Al Sharpton's address as well and specifically say that since that address has been tied to threats of violence and past incitement to violence, that they will not patrol that address nor respond to any burglar alarms.

Same for deBlasio's house - say it is an area crawling with communists who incite violence against police, so they won't patrol his 4 doors on x y and z sides of his house nor have anything to do with ensuring his power cutoff at 104 feet from curb Z at 4' 8" from the ground on the north side of the alleyway is secure from being shut down.

Shit like that. Effective shit.

No, But I remember White Lunch Comix. It was an undergound comic published in Vancouver, B.C. in the late '60s - early '70s. Sort of a ripoff on the comics of Robert Crumb. The White Lunch was an actual cafe, open 24/7, back in the day when such a thing was quite unusual. It was a fixture on the Vancouver scene, and the counter-culture rubbed elbows with the straight culture there.

470 AOP, some of those could be really funny.

Back when Tower Records was around, they distributed for free their in-store magazine, called Pulse!

It used to contain some stuff that was very inside-baseball regarding cutting-edge newbie rock artists and the record companies, but they also did some really funny stuff.

Oh. I got a feeling it was from the golden age, originally, or something. Don't recall what it was about, or anything, just recall the pricing and whatnot, they were kinda expensive, for what they were IIRC. If it is GA era, there were a boat load of weird titles nobody's sort of heard of, they have collectible $$$$ attached to them

Yes, and no.

No, in that I never saw the series myself. Yes, in that a sibling once picked up a comic book that was about Millie's daughter. Unfortunately, I can't remember the name of it off the top of my head, though I think it was part of Marvel's short-lived Star brand (not to be confused with the Starbrand from Marvel's New Universe brand... ).

The art work in some of those underground comics was very good, indeed. Because they didn't print in color, they made a lot more use of shading in the black and white art work. Characters' faces had real personality, and many of the panels were loaded with detail, and often there were running jokes in the details, as well as the main story. Highly collectable, now.

479 Millie was revived recently. There was a mini-series about female Marvel characters, some super-heroes and some not, just hanging out. The premise was the Millie was Patsy 'Hellcat' Walker's mentor back in her modeling days. Wiki says the series was called Models, Inc.

Character ran a pretty long time. I guess she was the Timely/Atlas/Marvel answer to Archie.

486 @474 junior and otho, it seems like all the comic book companies went through endless countless sub-label names and rebranding and repricing schemes for years and years.
-------------------

Star was slightly different. It was an attempt to create comics aimed at very young kids. For a while, they licensed a number of kids TV shows, and stuck the resulting comics under the name Star. For instance, the Thundercats comic book ended up with Star. The two notable exceptions were GI Joe, and Transformers, both of which stayed under Marvel proper.

Star also had some original series. The most famous of such series was probably "Peter Porker, The Spectacular Spider-Ham". As the title suggests, it was a comedic take on Marvel's popular Spider-man character, but with anthropormophic animals instead of humans. Peter Porker was a pig, his boss was J. Jonah Jackal, etc...

I think the series with Millie's daughter (who was also a model) was a part of this line-up, but I don't remember for certain.

No, I haven't paid much attention to any of it lately. But Spider-ham has always been popular with the fans, even after all these years. During the "Other" storyline, iirc they did *EIGHT* different cover variants for one of their issues, each focusing on a different version of Spiderman. Spider-ham was one of them.

That's been done before In other media that it wouldn't surprise me if its been a comic story before. The 90s Spider-Man had a Spider-Man multiverse finale. The video game Spider-Man shattered dimensions was also a multiverse game. With a spiderham cameo at the end of the game. And I believe that the current animated series ultimate Spider-Man will also have a multiverse arc.

The current storyline is building on those past works, such as the May Parker Spider-girl and her infant brother Ben from the M2 universe.

In the midst of this, the second Ultimate Universe Spider-man, Miles Morales, is dealing with the original X-men being dumped in his universe after they were brought forward in time and got stuck in the main 616 Marvel verse. This isn't a huge shock to him as he has previously met the 616 Spider-man.

Left unanswered so far is whether the X-men show up before or after the Spider-verse arc. Or why the Ultimate Universe Kitty Pryde doesn't seem to know Miles despite being on a team together for the last year.

503 It's easy to forget that at one time Lil Abner was a lightning rod of political satire.

I'd barely heard of it when one day in sixth grade they packed us on buses over to a local junior high to see a performance by their drama class of Dogpatch USA, which had been a Broadway musical and film in the 50s.

The girl they had playing the very skimpily clad Daisy Mae was very, um, mature for an 8th grader. I heard one of the teachers remark to another that half the audience was spontaneously entering puberty as a result.

He was also bitten by a genetically modified spider from Oscorp but it was a different experiment and gave him a somewhat different power set. He has a camouflage ability and a sort of energy sting similar the 616 universe's Jessica Drew Spider-woman.

He didn't have any web shooters for a good while until he became friendly with May Parker and Gwen Stacy. (Both alive though Gwen was dead for a while and became the Ultimate universe version of Carnage. She got better.) They made him a gift of the deceased Peter Parker's web shooters and the formula for making the fluid. But then recently a ressurected by means unknown Parker took them back. He has since decided to share the tech with Miles. The Ultimate Universe's Jessica Drew, who is a female clone of Peter Parker, presumably knows how to make the shooters and fluid but doesn't need them herself as she has it built-in Jake Gyllenhal-style.

It's very simple. Really.

He's got powers. I can't remember the explanation on it, but he's got powers that are similar to Peter Parker's (but slightly different, including his sting ability). His webbing is tech based as normal. May gave him Peter's old webshooters.

@502 Just ignore all the "Ultimate" stuff. I know I did.

Ultimate Spider-man had some good storylines. The rest of the Ultimate universe was completely forgettable, but most of the Spider-man line was much better. However, the last issue I saw was before they killed Peter off.

I did see the cross-over issue. The thing that stuck with me most was Peter's dodge when Gwen asked about her 616 counterpart.

---------------------

If I were to ever take control of Marvel, I'd have the writers implement a storyline in which the 616 May (who was kidnapped by Osborne just after being born, and then completely ignored) comes back out from under the rug that she's been conveniently swept under, and tongue lashes her parents for doing the deal with the devil that undid their marriage.

The "Latino" Spider-Man is the Milo guy that we've been talking about. He didn't show up until After Peter was killed off. IIRC his Dad's black, and his Mom's Puerto Rican. And he's twelve years old. The brief bits that I saw didn't suggest much hipness.

As for the rest of the setting, Cap's a jerk. And Nightcrawler, one of the nicest X-Men around in the regular setting, was turned into a crazed homophobic stalker/kidnapper. It's like the writers wanted to write "edgy" and forgot about "fun".

It had already started in the regular line, late 90's early 00's?? before the *spit* movie came out. They dropped the comics code approval thing and it was like "Fuck this" and "fuck that" and X-Men bonking X-chicks and gay X-men round the clock. Fuck you, Marvel. Then they changed the comics to fit the movies... Fuck you, Marvel. I started on the 60's stuff and like my comics to be kids oriented but clever enough for adults too. 516 Miles Morales was around 14 when he was introduced, a bit younger than Parker when he became Spider-man. They jumped things forward a bit between the first series ending with the death of his mother and the start of the new series. He's sixteen now, with most of the other New Ultimates characters being a bit older. Depending on how you think about it, Jessica Drew the clone (one of several produced by Otto Octavius, including one that was the UU version of the Scorpion) is either about 19 now or 4. She was 'born' with all of Parker's memories up to a certain point, so she does have the subjective experience of an actual young adult. She's also going by the name Black Widow these days. They've had two previously in the UU, the first Natasha Romanov one is definitely dead, and the second, Monica Chang, was possibly killed by Norman Osborne, who was mysteriously resurrected the same time as Peter Parker.

The Ultimate Universe had a set of objectives. To make use of the IP in a way that let them ignore the mountain of old continuity and also to have versions that would line up better with the movies then in development. There was some pretty good stories in there but some offended those overly attached to the canon versions.

Consequences are much more real in the UU. Death isn't so readily shrugged off and things like city destroying disasters have repercussion forever afterward. For instance, at the start of the Ultimates it is noted that the last time Bruce Banner became the Hulk around 800 people were killed and he is regarded more like a nuclear bomb that once went off accidentally. Fury would have him killed if he didn't think the Hulk was needed as a weapon against something far worse.

I'm not in the habit of buying comics. I get via torrent. A recent complete set of the UU is around 11 GB these days. It was about half that when I got back into comics about eight years ago. It was a worthwhile download.

Ok. Sounds complicated. I had clicked to the raison d'etre of the UU... It pissed me off as a stickler of the old continuity. Unfortunately, it wasn't just a matter of ignoring UU and sticking with the trad line as the already started breaking that for the movie/s with the X line. How about the Spider line? Is it still running without major changes, post UU and movies? I couldn't get back into it now, even if the stories and art are more old school. What with screwing up title continuity (issue number 1 every 6 months) and "writing for the trade"... I just couldn't follow it.

It was like Welcome Back Kotter, but with fewer afros.

Oh yeah, there was something about a lizard man and some bad acting and some stunt doubles doing skateboard tricks and most everything was computer generated...the rest is a blur.

525 And why do the great actors of Europe always have to lower themselves to play supervillains in American movies? Can't we find decent roles for them?

I've long argued that leftism can only function as an outsider ideology. As soon as it actually gets the power it craves, it either becomes totalitarianism, or becomes a disastrous farce. (Or boht.)

I think they're happier being on the sidelines griping and pointing out the flaws of their oppressors. It makes them feel morally superior.

Fine. Be oppressed but morally superior outsiders. Enjoy your fantasy world. I just hope you never gets the reigns of power again, but you (leftists) have no clue how to run a civilization.

528 525 -- zombie -- Heh... why? Because Hollyweird hasn't the imagination (or desire) to properly employ a classically-trained actor.

(By that I mean someone capable of doing Shakespeare... and looking good while doing it.)

I won't say you're wrong, but...

...you're missing a vital point: the true construct of Leftism only has one real purpose... the unmaking of Western Civilization.

Everything else about it is just shadow-puppet play...

Nah, accents are 'cool'...

...and cool villains are more important to Hollyweird than cool heroes.

(Unless a cool hero makes them more money...)

536 Cary Grant and David Niven talked funny.
Branagh talks however you want. Hugh Laurie sounds more American than I do.
Makes you wonder why Olivier had to sound like a bombastic Hamlet even when he played a Nazi. Greatest actah evah, though. Just ask.

Hugh Grant did a lot to damage the Brit nice-guy thing, though.

I don't know about cool and all but a German or Slavic accent is fairly common for the villains Hollywood likes to produce.

So. NO.

Nah, you're just attempting to be optimistic.

Nothing wrong with that.

In the meanwhile, let's hope for a pleasant Monday.

If it's the accent that's the key here (not those who can do decent american accents)... It's not really a xenophobic thing. It's more to do with believeability, suspension of disbelief and whatnot. You CAN cast him in a "decent" regular role, but in most cases, you're going to have the audience wondering "why is this english guy the police chief (or whatever)?" For a supervillain this is not aproblem, because it's not a "regular" character... and the accent adds a layer of "sophistication and education", making him more threatening. The upshot being the audience will buy into the character and not ask questions. This would not necessarily work for LOW level villains. If you cast your, say, English actor as a mugger in an urnab crime film, the audience will be pulled out of the film, in the same way as they would if you cast him as the police chief.

545 Before Dracula, Lugosi often played good guys. Or, at least, a Postal Inspector.
Von Braun and Kissinger are behind us now. We're in the era of Soros.

Just what the hell was Goldfinger supposed to sound like, anyway?
Frobe didn't sound like that in Chitty Chitty...or did he?
The real Goldfinger, they tell me, was a dentist, Fleming's neighbor who pissed him off. Makes you wonder where the other villains came from.

546 It was regularly disconcerting to hear Cary Grant as Everyman, with that upper-crust East End cockney accent. But he was Cary Grant, my good man, and you were not, so you just learned to listen past it.

You never hear the Knickerbocker accent any more. That was good for villains.

547 I noticed that you linked Instapundit rather than the Daily Caller. I agree that the DC site is a disaster. Betsy's Page links to the print version of their articles rather than put her readers through the nightmare of the actual DC. Maybe you should try it. She also links WSJ through google so that her readers can get through the paywall.

Remarkable, the power of a peaceful protest.
Lie of the day: "We have never protested suggesting violence." Al Sharpton. Except for that whole "What do we want, Dead Cops" thing in New York; then there was that "Burn it down Step-Father rant" thing in Ferguson. Other than that, God's children praying for peace and understanding...
