The Gaming thread (without much gaming)

Not gaming related but this is cool

Comic book fan, cosplay aficionado, and 15-year veteran deputy sheriff Michael Wilson (@knightmage) brought cheer to countless families on December 18 when he strolled into his local Ohio TOYS R US dressed as Dragon Ball's Piccolo and paid off everyone's layaways.

Not a whole lot has come out of this year's Jump Fiesta. You get a new Final Fantasy trailer and that's about it:

Square gonna go out their way to make you feel weird to be touching yourself to Cid in this Final Fantasy XV trailer

Have been able to get a couple of games in on the new Ascension expansion pack. Starting to get into territory of them that I dont ow. It's okay, it lets you pull off some crazy ass hands.

Also checked out Hex finally. Eh, it's an okay digital TCG

18 Kerbal Space Program released the newest update, now at version .90. It's definitely a step up. A lot of people were hyping it as going to be a bigger gameplay change than 0.18; those people were wrong. (I was not one of those people, since I lived through the magic of 0.1.

Still, I feel the same disappointment I've felt since maxmaps joined, and in particular since he's apparently a producer now. QA is slipping, and we're not getting minor patches to fix problems in the updates. I understand the need for promotion, but harv (the creator) always had a knack for over delivering on updates; now we get exactly what we expect. Maxmaps also has an annoying personality, pompous and just rude from his IRC communications. He actually reminds me of TFG.

21 The FF XV trailer makes me think they should just retire it. Knights with Mortarr Head helmets. Assassination in space. Grand Theft Auto vibe. Perhaps a little bit of Red Dawn. And God of War giants or maybe Attack on Titan. And the dudes are still in the classic FF style.

23 In other games I play news, the 1700's era city builder (much more Tropico than Sim City) has some cool mods out now, and I've been playing those. My complaint with the basic game is that there's not much to do that's exciting in the late game. Early game, you must balance food collection, tool production, and preventing freezing. Mid game those all are still problems, but you also have man power constraints and health issues creeping up. By late game, you have a good amount of reserves, so a bad harvest or two isn't really a problem.

The mod I've been playing is called Colonial Charter, and it basically triples the number of crops, resources, production buildings, etc. Early and mid game are fairly unaffected, but there's still a lot to do in the late game. If the challenge of surviving the first few winters of a new settlement, designing a sustainable economy, and preventing the rapid collapse of your city sounds like fun, give Banished a look. Currently $10 on steam (until Jan 2 I think), a very good deal.

28 How come a game called "Final Fantasy" is about driving around and being stopped at roadblocks and stuff?

I guess I'm showing my age here. Shouldn't they be, I dunno, fighting dragons or something?

30 I've been holding off on downloading the latest KSP, partly because I have stuff like work and life to deal with, and also because I have a fun set of missions underway in the previous version. Every time I've downloaded a new version, I can't get my old games to run properly.

WHY, oh why do software engineers not give a damn about backward-compatibility any more? They're giving us more and more reasons NOT to buy new stuff and fewer and fewer reasons to do so.

33 Steam's Christmas sale is on. Snagged Space Engineers (it's amusing in appropriate doses) and Rise of Nations (because I'm a sucker for it).

First big patch for Civ:BE and I'm not convinced it made things any better. Hope there's a proper next game in the pipeline because that was an odd misfire.

So, Merry Christmas and Fuck Sony.

34 Steam sale ongoing. Alien Isolation is 50% off today. I'm about 5 hours in and have only seen the alien once. It feels right though - you did not see the alien right away in the movie either. Very true to the movie, and a genuinely thrillng game.

Also grabbed Doorkickers for a few bucks. Fun tactical strategy game.

Just sayin' is all.

36 I did not know banished was developed by one guy, that's awesome. It's like Chris Sawyer solely developing roller coaster tycoon (and transport tycoon, but I never played it, only locomotion)

Nah... FF III (otherwise known as FF VI) was the ultimate... don't get me wrong, I loved FF VII, but it's one of those games you can only play once.

You can probably guess why I feel that way... none of the other FF games after that have cleared my bar of expectations.

It's probably my fault; I'm way too 'old-school' for my own good...

...and why I've never let go of my fav PS1 and PS2 games.

I've given up hope that they'll ever make games like them ever again.

38 So Cid's a girl now? Another triumph for the SJW's.

Of course, they're still bitching because Cid's too sexy and the playable characters in the trailer are all men.

FFVI (a.k.a. FF3) was late-19th-century steampunk, FFVII was post-WWII, FFVIII was contemporary bleeding into futuristic, FFIX was 17th-century baroque, FFX was post-post-apocalyptic, FFXIII was futuristic. Even FFIV (a.k.a. FF2) mixed in extensive science-fiction elements with the fantasy, and the original FF had a few SF elements as well.

41 40 excellent encapsulation.

38 it's Final Fantasy. Sid/Cid is different in each iteration.

And, as Carbon pointed out, so is the entire setting and technological timeframe.

It's still not a RPG. You play a movie.

Bethesda is RPGs. Rockstar comes close.

Bethesda needs to get with Rockstar and have a baby, is all I'm saying. With Geo-mod physics.

42 Oh and GTA was pulled in Australia not because it was violent, but because it is the most conservative game ever made, and at every turn flips the bird to SJWs.

There are far more violent games. Far more misogynistic games. None more conservative.

Even the commercial breaks between songs on 20 different radio stations are mostly cutting satire of The American Left and Culture.

And III, Vice City, and San Andreas all "went there" as well.

Screw you, SJWs.

Posted by: taqiyyologist at December 21, 2014 05:24 PM (1AgbC)

43 Los Santos feels real in GTA:V. Just walking down the street, in the hood, in the barrio, in the shopping areas, in the construction-type areas, in the airport, in the trailerpark areas.... it all feels and sounds real.

Why? Because the designers USED stereotypes, instead of avoiding them.

You stop outside a gay bar in GTA:V and guess what?

There are stereotypical gays hanging out and talking! Leather vests and lisps and all!

The SJW says: THIS SHALL NOT STAND!!!

Posted by: taqiyyologist at December 21, 2014 05:27 PM (1AgbC)

44 Whoa, what is going on in that Final Fantasy trailer? Seems like they are trying to shoehorn a Yakuza game in there.

Every now and again I stop and puzzle over how the only fantasy games in the Final Fantasy series these days are the MMORPGs - i.e. XI and XIV.

47 If Best Buy looms large in your local game shopping choices, they've got a promotional price on the Gamers Club Unlocked: $30 for two years.

There are other benefits but the big one is 20% off all new game purchases, so typical new releases are at $48. At this lower price (normally $100) it only takes $150 in purchase before you've broken even on the cost of membership. If you frequently buy new release this amounts to just 2.5 games.

I didn't sign up when it first came around at this price a while back, when it replaced their previous Gamer's club arrangement, and I regret that.
