Overnight Open Thread (20 Dec 2014)

Interesting read. A French soldier's view of US soldiers in Afghanistan.

Everyone complains about the quality of 'the new guys.' Don't. The screw-ups of this modern generation are head and shoulders above the 'high-medium' of any past group. Including mine. So much of 'The scum of the earth, enlisted for drink.'

This is 'The Greatest Generation' of soldiers.

They may never be equalled.

White Christmas

White Christmas probability. No snow for me this year damn it. Just high winds and lots of rain.

In Russia...

Apparently, a few Russian bank robbers were blown up when lightning struck their car as they made their high speed getaway. I don't know. I'm thinking someone dropped a live grenade or something.

Funny that the NY Post just left out the political party affiliation for this politician who 'follows' a porn star on his twitter account. I'm sure y'all guessed this politician is a Democrat and of course he claims his account was hacked. Standard response 101.

Cop Killing

All those idiots like de Blasio, the Congressional Black Congress, pro sports players, etc that keep on insinuating that cops are killers and that justice needs to happen need to own the murder of two cops today in NYC. Some are already celebrating that these two cops were murdered.

18 Evening, Horde!

Ain't nothin' like an ONT from the warmth and comfort of the recliner, in a warm house on a chilly night.

If I had a fireplace, it'd be the perfect time to add another log to the fire.

But then, I don't wanna be accused of being in the LIB crowd, either.

Speaking of? "Let" it burn...... looking at NYC, there might not be much "let", to it. More like it's gonna be damn near impossible to stop.

Especially when a crowd of political arsonists serve as Mayor, Commissioner and Quasi-official loudmouth (Sharpton).

They're more in the MAKE it burn camp, and they're playing with gasoline, matches and malice.

So, since 10 am I've been exiled to my lair while the fiancee, her
sister, and her sister's partner have been making candy in the main part
of the house. At my suggestion, the fiancee made some arrangements to
get dinner.

So, they want something quick -- and there's a
Chinese restaurant right around the corner from our house that's very
fast. They go to our bin of local menus, figure out what they want and
call it in. Then the sister drives to the place around the corner
and.....nothing there. The fiancee had picked a random Chinese
restaurant menu out of the bin (there are probably four in there) and
called the order in to that one.

LOL on the cats in Christmas trees.

Our two senior indoor kitteh girls love the tree so much. They fight over prime napping places under the tree.

No, Scottie dogs (belonging to NYC Progs who visit my m-i-l) and pee and poop in the living room for years, are assholes.

And everytime any member of the family says, "Please, for G-d's sake, don't bring your pissing, pooping, in-bred dog for Christmas" we're met with, "He's a purebred. He's stressed when he visits."

True story.

42 "This is 'The Greatest Generation' of soldiers. They may never be equalled."

Reality check time.

After the ignominious final departure of the USA from South Vietnam, and after the North Vietnamese had rolled triumphantly into Saigon, a decent interval was allowed to elapse before Americans began to haltingly communicate with the Northern victors.

One of those Americans, Army colonel Harry Summers (whose book _On Strategy_ should be required reading), while on a visit to Hanoi, said "You never defeated us on the battlefield."

His North Vietnamese counterpart pondered and then said, "That may be so, but it is also irrelevant."

The highly tuned combat skills of American forces today are every bit as irrelevant.

Those forces were committed, and fought, in the context of a strategic doctrine which was horribly unrealistic from the start.

A strategic doctrine predicated on ludicrous ideas such as the one that "Islam is a religion of peace", and that countries such as Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, decades-long tap roots of Islamic terror, could become trusted allies in the "War On Terror".

If the strategy is ruinously inept, even the most brilliant tactical successes will be short-lived in effect.

Afghanistan is reverting to something just as bad as it was before Americans arrived. Iraq is turning into something even worse.

So while today's US forces are excellent combatants man for man, that and five bucks will get you a decaf soy grande mocha latte in a yuppie coffee bar. It's irrelevant.

Both.

Gewurz should be a relatively young drink that is somewhat "spicy" -- thus, it frequently gets used to accompany odd things, like Chinese food. When wines age, they generally get "mellower". You should get some backup beer and pop the cork on your Gewurz (possibly chilled).

138 GCE. I got the New Dawn in '99, when I split from the ex. Lived aboard for seven years thereafter.

Given that I've been with the same lass now for nearly 9 years, I've accumulated too much in the way of "stuff", (tools, lake-bottom guns, gear, etc.) to load back onto anything less than Trump's yacht. So, another liveaboard yacht is a low probability at this point. But, something in the mid 20 ft range, a weekender, is a distinct possibility.

Unless I buy a winning lotto ticket. Might help if I bought one in the first place, right?

Hurricane Ike ate the boat (hence the "Sunk") in the sig. Which is formatted thus, as it appears on all my standard correspondence, but with my last name thereon.

Which sig looks like dog's ass when strung out in a horizontal, single line "auto sig" in this here commenting feature.

Also which, shouldn't irritate nor offend anyone of normal sensitivities, maturity, self-confidence and self-worth, good humor, cheer and just general Moron sensibility.

And if it does? Refer to paragraph immediately preceding this one. As well as my post #57 in this thread.

Normally I'm not in favor of cops striking, but I think the police of NYC should strike. Let the people know what it is like without them. Since Mayor DeeBlazeeoh is a bit union guy, I'm sure he'd be supportive.
I feel really bad for the families of the police right now. If the people don't tell DeBlazeeoh and his ilk to shut the hell up then, NYC doesn't deserve protection.

Cop Killings Brings Horror -- and Some Cheers http://thebea.st/1z7LDYL . Really?? Cheers?

It’s hard to believe people would cheer the murder of two cops, but stubborn crime in the projects makes people think the police don’t care.
After the crack of gunfire echoed down Myrtle Avenue where several public buildings that make up the Tompkins Houses, several neighbors raced toward the bloody crime scene.

One 30-year-old local who gave his first name only as Carlos, didn’t hear the gunfire but saw the hysteria and walked to the police tape.

And he couldn’t believe his eyes or ears. He didn’t see shock or sorrow but glee and jubilation.

“A lot of people were clapping and laughing,” he said.

Across New York -- and throughout Brooklyn -- the murder of two police officers has generated a sense of near-universal horror. Carlos said he witnessed a different scene: fired-up locals, staring at two cops killed in cold blood and saying they got what they deserved.

A couple months ago I watched a few minutes of a SNL rerun that had Tina Fey in a sketch. There wasn't anything funny in the entire sketch. Here's what it was: They had two stupid women talking stupidly. Then a prone Tina Fey was carried across the stage. That was it. If they have five viewers watching that shit, they should be grateful.

This is when I wish I had a "rental" bobcat.

Renting one is easy. Make a trip to your nearest Bing tab, and search for "Mountain Lion Urine Pest Repellant".

You now know exactly what it is.

While wearing gloves ...

... squirt it carefully on a number of cotton balls. Not too much, YOU want the DOG to smell it, not YOU and everyone else.

These cotton balls will be placed, in hidden locations, like under the edge of furniture, in your house in areas you want to keep the dog(s) away from. Defense in depth; a line isn't likely to be enough, so add a few along hallways, to reinforce the point.

The idea is that the smell will alert the dog to a much larger and much more fearsome predator. Ideally, the dog will INSIST upon sittin on its owners' lap the entire time.

Actually, yes. Out of the Blue I found out that my Dad, deceased early circa 1981, was included in ownership of a farm in Kentucky that is about 1600 acres. Goes back to my Grandparents generation. Never even knew it was "in the family". It has been sold, and myself and 1 brother and 2 sisters have been notified that by 1/20/15 we will each be getting about 42k for our interest, that I never knew I had. Drug deal gone wrong? I'm glad he wasn't killed - but I can't feel too bad about Rahm's son and Zach's nephew being roughed up a bit.

The Emanuels grew up in very wealthy, liberal Wilmette, where they were able to develop their leftist theories without ever thinking their comfortable lives would ever change. Well, Rahm, meet reality. You're perfectly willing to sacrifice the lives of others - those kids on the south side you don't really give two shits about. What about YOUR kid?

Now, I am biased. My dad was a decorated LEO, 28 years on the Philly PD. I have 3 cousins on the force. I work closely with the Philly PD at my second job. However, I'm not so blind as to believe that all cops are good, and I have the general wingnut suspicion of authority. The Brown case, to me, has been proven to be a clear-cut good shoot. The Garner case is more troublesome, but in the end Garner's death was not an intentional murder. I would like to see what the GJ saw in that case that led to the no-bill. The 2 murdered NYPD officers were simply assassinated, end of story. Nothing, and I mean nothing, justified this. I don't know how the aggrieved minorities think that this will lead to anything but more tension.

Speaking off the cuff -- things that pass under will have a stepped-up basis for doing so. However, in community property states, both spouses may have co-owned the asset -- so something a married couple bought in 1970 for $100K and was worth $250K when partner A died in 1980, would have a tax basis of $175K going forward ($50K as B's share from original purchase, $125K as A's share under will).

I would start by looking at the 706 for your mom's estate, probably filed around 1998. If the property is clearly listed there, that's the basis for the entire property.

Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace.

-Where there is hatred, let me sow Love;
-Where there is injury, Pardon;
-Where there is doubt, Faith;
-Where there is despair, Hope;
-Where there is darkness, Light;
-Where there is sadness, Joy.

I seek not to be consoled as to console. I seek not to be understood, so much as understanding; to be loved as to love.

-For it is in giving that we receive.
-It is in pardoning that we are pardoned.

...It is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.

-St. Francis.

Let us earn our "knowledge of self", so as to NEVER attempt to explain that, "I'm not that type of person".

Knowing that we are human in flesh and blood gives us allowances; for which we must confess.

As hatred builds, let it be amongst those who would reject Family, Love and perhaps Our Heavenly Father.

Allow our very Souls to shout with Joy this Christmas Season. Accept our brethren of joyous and peaceful will, as they wish to coincide amongst our representative republic.

Glory to God. Peace on Earth and toward men of good will.

...the rest of you can ingest lead rapidly.

Future would have Bmore cops send his image to NYC system, then bodycams on cops could scan crowd to ID the threat.

the promised gigantic massive anti-Bill Maher protest in Berkeley today -- totally evaporated and didn't happen!!!

http://pjmedia.com/zombie/2014/12/20/bill-maher-speech-at-uc-berkeley-unaffected-by-small-protests/

Is this the news of the century or what?

"But since that initial flurry of publicity over a month ago, no announcements have been made of any planned upcoming protests. So when the day finally arrived -- today, at 3:00pm -- there was essentially no media around to notice that the planned protest had fizzled to just a handful of silent people holding a couple of signs outside the security area surrounding the venue...

Police teams and bomb squad K-9 units surrounded Haas Pavilion, where the commencement ceremony was being held.

The planned protest originally spooked the administration, who established strict security measures around the graduation ceremony to prevent a Ferguson-style riot or any attempt to crash the event or bring in anything dangerous...."

Sometimes all you need is the right cat.

All of the cats who have ever owned me have been nervously alarmed by dogs (other than known ones).

But I have come across the occasional not-large house cat who holds to the principle that Thou Shalt Not Tolerate A Dog and is willing to back it up.

Some of them can really bring the cat-fu. Walking sideways on hind legs. Blowing up to three times normal size. Making demon on detached duty from the deepest circle of Hell noises. Siamese seem particularly skilled at this.

Most dogs assume a cat will be afraid of them and take off. When the cat instead goes totally gonzo and makes straight for them? Oh crap! What IS that thing? Run!!!

513 I was going to say... isn't that French article a few years old?

I think I've seen it before... but maybe I saw a different translation. It doesn't seem exactly the same, just really similar.

It seems odd, reading it, because you sort of figure that people don't talk like that, right? It's got a link to the French language article (supposedly) so maybe someone who speaks French could see if it sounds more reasonable in the original language.

Now, in some ways it seems legit. I mean, sure, I'm hearing something I really like to hear, and that always seems legit, right? Except that as far as I can tell our guys really *do* do a particularly *professional* sort of bad-ass warrior thing. And while US soldiers will go out of their way to praise and admire particular foreign military unit's bad-assery they're not lacking in their own self___. Figure that the average European military can't even manage to get everyone on board with getting their hair cut. And we *do* do this particular thing that elevates the lower ranks to significant responsibility, which is far from "normal" in many militaries. Is one of our guys standing sentry duty going to feel he's *supposed* to spend his shift malingering?

Oh, I expect any average 18 year old to be about as useful as any other 18 year old until they learn better, but by the time he or she is 20 he or she expects, and rightly so, to hold significant responsibility and authority.

We take it for granted.

Yes, there are some that are good to go, but the ones that are jerks sure do taint the lot of them. They walk around in public dropping the F bomb without even the remotest consideration for others. They are loud, rude, dress like slobs, lazy, and lack common decency. They argue and fight over the slightest thing, and everything is about them. She frequently brings up politics at our department meetings and the the libs nod while the conservatives (I know they are) stare off into middle space.

She and her husband are originally from Kentucky. She is retiring in July, and earlier this week, when we had our Christmas party I asked her if she and her husband were planning on staying in Wisconsin.

540 This was not a known asset, if that makes sense, at the time of
Mom's death. Hell, we are just now finding out about it. My argument
would be that it did not come into my possession until Mom's estate was
prorated in 98. She owned it by default by being Dad's single heir. This
makes sense to me, which means it will probably not grock with the Tax
man.

ColdBeer, you'd like a Catholic priest I know here. He was a (not terribly religious - chased women and drank) linebacker in college. He played college ball at the U of Michigan in the '90's and was considered a top NFL prospect.

He was also an art history major who planned on becoming an art teacher if the NFL didn't pan out. And he worked as a bouncer in college.(Yeah, bud, I like art. You gonna make something of that? I'm 6'5" and 260 lbs.)

He had a religion conversion when he was a senior and became a priest instead of a NFL player. I went to a Mass of his 5 or so years ago and that chalice disappeared in his hands.

And he heard my confession. He scolded me for talking too loudly. You listen when you are scolded by a linebacker. "I'm sorry, Father."

Then he told me that the culture is decadent and we are in the same place the Romans who witnesses the end of the Roman Empire were - but Christ wins in the end. God will always win in the end.

And somehow it was reassuring hearing that growled in the bass voice of a linebacker. We need more priests like him in the Catholic Church and fewer Fr. Richard Simmons.

My greatest fear is my own ego. I detest its very existence. I wish to become "That Kid" again, that befriended the "nerds" and Loved them for correcting my stupidity.

That I have most of those friends to this day says something.

It says that their will and belief is stronger than mine.

Yeah, I knew that one was fake BEFORE I even watched the video! Anything that seems "too perfect to be true" usually is. And then when you watch the "lightning" version, you ask yourself, "But where was the lightning?" and also "How did the uploader know the people in the car had just robbed a church?" which is an extremely rare event even without the lightning part. So: fake-o from the get-go. And yet, even in this Internet Age, those obvious urban legends STILL get believe by the gullible masses.

Sadly, Jonathan Gruber and P.T. Barnum were right.

Ohhhh, nooo.....on the Federal taxes, too. Take a look at my earlier
example -- "Community Property" is not a Federal issue....it's handled
on a state-by-state basis. You could have the same set of facts in two
different states and have two different Federal tax treatments.

Posted by: cthulhu

I suggested he consult a CPA. Most reasonable people would assume that to be a CPA in their home state.

Perhaps I ticked you off here, or in a past life. You take issue
with most posts I put up, including how far the drive is to a town one
hour away from me. You did that you know.

Maybe you didn't realize you do this. Just an FYI.

Posted by: Tobacco Road at December 21, 2014 01:41 AM (4Mv1T)

I'm sorry, TR -- I'm actually very interested in your posts because NC is high up the list of states I'd rather live in, and I know that I am woefully ignorant of so many things that apply there (one notable discussion was regarding draining fats down the kitchen sink, when someone noted that even EVOO could obstruct a drain at 20 degrees).

In the case of MWNP, however, he is currently in GA but, IIRC, relocated there recently. He's talking about property inherited from his parents. When I referred to "local CPA", it wasn't necessarily GA. He needs to consider the laws relating to the jurisdiction in which the property is located, the jurisdiction in which the estate was adjudicated, and his own locale. I'm not-at-all certain at how that works out.

When I think of how many of your posts go by and I silently go "damned straight", I'm fretting that my frequent "how does that work, again?" posts are interpreted as criticism, when the truth is that I really don't know and feel a pressing need to understand.

Not in Kyrgyzstan. The Soviets pretty much stamped out any extremism there -- practically stamped out most religious observance at all. A lot of these girls I suspect are nominally "Muslim," but if an American WASP with a fat wallet came a-callin', they'd be all over you in a heartbeat.

I get the impression that these ads are not intended for local Kyrgyz loser-dudes to peruse, but for Americans and Brits. (Note, for example that the weights are given in POUNDS first; and the site is in ENGLISH. That tells you the target audience.) Girls sign up in the hope of snagging a foreign husband -- and we're not talkin' about some fat uneducated Pakistani villager with a deformed hand [move reference -- just ignore]. They want YOU! And for a low low fee, they can be yours.

I don't think they're "Selling themselves" -- I think they're just trying to find husbands with "prospects" greater than the incredibly limited prospects available to men in Kyrgyzstan. I doubt it's out-and-out prostitution - it's sincere marriage-seekers. It's just that if a man is "rich" (i.e. middle-class by American standards) you're lookin' like might fine husband material to them.

753 Told Mrs VIA about Brandon, (CAC, The Meatball) and their soon to arrive Son at dinner last night.

Somehow, between the smiles and the tears, she got out a greeting to Brandon and his family.

So....Brandon, From us,
God bless both you, your wife, and the Little Meatball.

My guess would be: not until the next Downtrodden Minority Person is killed/wounded/dissed by the White Oppressor. Members of the middle-class -- as represented by the two cops murdered yesterday -- don't loot and burn. They were taught to be better than that.

So a "statement" condemning the murders was issued in Choom Boy's name? He can't wait to get his disgusting mug on teevee when one of his "sons" gets popped by Whitey after committing a crime, but is too busy having fun in Hawaii to actually show up and condemn a fucking worthless thug?

I thought I had reached the absolute peak of disgust with this shitweasel. He always manages to surprise me by adding to my loathing.

Oh, and fuck you too, De Blasio. Worthless turd....

I agre.
It isn't gonna flame up from the law abiding side deciding to burn the town down.
But, the GBF is a major problem here in the area, with a lot of influence on what takes place.
A good number of black residents of the city are indeed pushing back against the protests, and the cries to cause violence. Several good young black leaders are emerging at the street level, trying to teach black youth to step away from the path of perpetual victimhood, and step up to the ideas of education, and responsibility for ones actions.
But, the city is full of Al Sharpton followers, simple minded emoters, and failed old revolutionaries who wish to see violence.
It's not a by-product....it's the actual goal. Anything less is failure.

I read the local news online at the Baltimore Sun occasionally.
The scariest part is the online comments.
There are enough ugly comments there to allow one to believe that there are enough white, gap toothed peckerwoods just itching to gather the boys and ride, that something happening is almost becoming inevitable. Are these comments written by non-blacks, posting honest viewpoints?
Are they being written by others as a false flag?

Don't know.

Mrs VIA grew up here in Baltimore.
Went through the riots as a child.
She doesn't want to do that again.
