Marco Rubio Sounds Very Impressive in Interview with Mark Levin

He was speaking about Cuba, an issue which I do not (or did not) care about.

So I was a good audience to judge him in an impartial way. I did not care about the issue he was talking about, and in fact was rather skeptical about him for caring about it more than I deemed necessary.

He made me reconsider my Not Caring position, and made me shift on to both Caring and towards agreeing with him. Which is something.

I had not really thought much of Marco Rubio, thinking of him as both a pretty face who gives nice speeches about the Greatness of America that impress grandma and no one else, and as the Guy Who Pushed for Amnesty.

But this 15 minute interview made me consider him more seriously.

Give it a listen, tell me if I'm right or crazy.

On Fox Now: Rand Paul, who Rubio called out, is now responding to Rubio.

Meh.

59 "thinking of him as both a pretty face who gives nice speeches about the Greatness of America that impress grandma and no one else, and as the Guy Who Pushed for Amnesty."

Rube isn't just The Guy Who Pushed For Amnesty.

He's the guy who gave English-language interviews to the alphabet networks saying that, of course there was no way that amnesty would mean immediate voting rights and immediate government benefits.

And who then turned round and gave interviews in Spanish to the likes of Univision, where he said that of course amnesty would mean immediate voting rights and immediate government benefits.

I have zero trust in a guy who pulls crap like that. It's the same sort of thing that the late and thoroughly unlamented Yasser Arafat used to do: give completely different accounts in English and in Arabic for different media targets.

70 Rubio introduced "immigration reform" in the middle of the Presidential election, knowing it had zero chance of passage, just to give the Democrats and the MFM, birm, an issue they liked to beat on Romney. Like he was one of *them*.

71 I listened to as much of TFG's Cuber speech yesterday and my takeaway was that he is very worried about the interests of Americans and Cubans, as if he was President of Americans AND Cubans and had to balance things out between the two.

Someone should run up to him, kick him squarely in the crotch and remind him that he has to look solely after the interests of Americans and let the chips fall where they may for everyone else. That may actually work out in favor of Castro, but probably not, since he's terrorist supporting commie (Castro, that is. TFG is a terrorist supporting commie supporting commie).

91 "He gives a great speech on the greatness of America. I will give him that."

I think what I'm looking for is someone who recognizes that America is no longer a great country, and no longer has any realistic prospect of being one.

Rather than the restoration of greatness, what is required is to see that America is now a mediocre, fading, failing, heavily debt-sodden country on the brink of another Civil War internally, and facing increasingly powerful and dangerous enemies externally.

And that the grand challenge before us now, rather than grand restoration, instead is _prevention_. Prevention of outright collapse.

I'll try to find an authoritative cite.

I remember the event in near real time and it's one of those things where I assumed that the magical intartoobz would of their own volition grab and store the damning material, and they may not have.

It's reasonably to be assumed that, for one thing, Rubio saw how fast he fell in the polls once the reality of his amnesty proposals became known, and realized he'd just stepped neck deep in the shit, and had his people talk to Univision's people to have a scrub party.

Nard also is infamous for his declaration that the GOP need to drop voter ID as an issue because of the risk of it "offending" people, a conclusion he reached after speaking at various historically-black universities.

Yes, if there's one thing on which we all should agree, it's that Republicans should worry about the possibility of offending persons who are overwhelmingly never going to vote anything other than Democratic for the rest of their lives.

132 I just listened to it, and he did a good job explaining his position. It is likely that overthrow was always at best a stretch goal, but the real value of our policy is keeping Cuba in the annoying pest column. That's a boring objective, and not something to sell to voters. When it comes to places like Cuba, though, boring is good.

I don't really know much though. I do love Cuban Sandwiches. That, I know.

133 Rubio is good on this topic. He's not a phony pol, because he has an emotional connection to it. I am still very wary of him because of amnesty, but I'm glad I heard this interview. It was good to hear the genuine passion in his voice - you don't get that from pols very often.

And yeah, compare and contrast with Rand Paul. Paul strikes me as an ideologue in the worst sense of the world. Like Obama, he has his Narrative (in Obama's case it's leftist, in Paul's case, it's libertarian) and nothing, not facts, will dissuade him. And, like Obama, Paul adopts a snotty, superior attitude to those he disagrees with. He was schooling Rubio, of all people, on Cuba?? The idiots who are acting like they know more about Cuba than Rubio are like people telling a Pole, "Hey, look, you don't know anything about the Russians. Let me tell you what they're like."

Domestically, he'd be a big improvement, but the next US president will have a shitload of work to do abroad because of JEF's screw-ups, and Paul is not the guy for that job.

Rubio VP, maybe, to bring home Florida. But the only reason to "amnesty" some of the 20 million illegals is so we bio ID them, and know to never give them a vote of free stuff, and match them against crimes.

Broke the law and then worked illegally ... no vote ever, that's for those that wait and come legally. Only Dem's are insisting they vote, not the illegals, except their mouthy advocates. In time some "self deport". But Obama style amnesty and health care means another 20 million come soon, start taking over municipalities by illegal invasion.

Rubio still is soft on that.

150 Rubio is certainly a serious person. He was Speaker of the Florida House, the youngest ever, before running for Senate.

He made a serious error with the Senate Immigration Reform bill. As I cautioned my young Senators when first elected, first DeMint and then Scott, it is important to take your time and get the feel of the Senate before forging any policy alliances, everyone there has their own agenda and you should be able to define theirs first before working on a bill with them.

In short, he seems to have fallen in with a bad crowd. Rubio did back off the bill later and seems to now understand the necessity of enforcement measures coming first, other reforms to follow.

Again, the brashness of Paul, Rubio, and Cruz is refreshing but also not reflective of the maturity of real leaders - which is why they each need to serve a while in the Senate, at some point run for Governor in their states, do a good job and only then think they MIGHT be qualified for the biggest job in the world.

Posted by: Adjoran at December 20, 2014 12:56 AM (QIQ6j)

151 Staying home again if Romney is anywhere near the ticket. Same with Christie, Rubio, Bush III, and Cruz.

Nothing against the Bushes, but Bush III on his own will try to make Obamacare "work", along with more interventionism, Amnesty, not to mention sweeping all the Obama scandals under the rug.

Cruz is not American. He's a Canadian who retained his citizenship when it was convenient and discarded it all the same

I'd be willing to vote for Paul, if only because I trust his instincts on small government and foreign policy isolationism. Though he has the same track record as Cruz (virtually nothing meaningful, in that, they are like Obama), I doubt the apple falls far from the tree, which in Paul's case is a good thing because his father is an ironclad paleo-conservative..

Sarah Palin and Scott Walker are the best ticket. Rand Paul in the wings if Walker remains in his governorship.
