Fewer US-Born People Working in American Now Than in 2007; Foreign-Born Migrant Workers Account for the Increase in Employment

It's so retrograde to distinguish between "American" and "non-American."

Fewer Americans born in the U.S. have jobs now than were employed to November 2007, despite a working-age population growth of 11 million.

The amazing drop in employment highlights President Barack Obama’s slow recovery from the deep 2008 shock, but also spotlights many companies' growing reliance on foreign migrant labor.

In November 2014, one in every five U.S. jobs was held by a foreign-born worker, up from one-in-six jobs in January 2010, according to federal data highlighted by the Center for Immigration Studies.

Since November 2007, the number of working legal and illegal migrants has risen by two million, from 23.1 million in November 2007 to 25.1 million in November 2014.

But the number of Americans with jobs has fallen by 1.5 million, from 124 million in November 2007 to 122.6 million November 2014.

All of the net gain in employment from 2007 to 2014 -- all of it -- has gone to foreign immigrants.

When Americans say they still feel like they're in a recession -- that's because they are. American employment is lower now than it ever has been.

Yay?

Yes there is. It will cost you more due to government design. If they are H1-B's, they are close to being indentured servants because no job and you're gone. If they are illegal, they are a whole lot cheaper. If they are illegally legal, they are still cheaper than citizens because you do not have to pay health care to them.

Don't make me add that if you are a minority business owner you get a boatload of government preferences and cheap loans. Those franchises are all foreign just due to hard work. The gov't gives them a leg up.

If I don't like, and most people don't, the friggin' gov't should do one of their actual jobs and secure the border. Also, they should be looking out for their citizens and foreigners.

If you have not concern for you fellow citizens then go someplace else. I'm tired of the ignorant "If you don't like..." argument. It's lazy.

There's nothing stopping me from buying and opening a coal mine.

Except for, y'know, the massive bolus of hugely expensive government rules and regulations specifically designed to discourage such ventures from being able to succeed.

And except for the government forcing people who would normally choose to buy my product to instead buy alternative competing products, while the government heavily subsidizes those alternatives relative to my product.

Yep, other than that, we sure do have a free market in the USA.

Needless to say, the USA labor market is just as rigged, to promote the interests of noncitizen workers over those of citizen workers.

It was a very weird sort of Ponzi-esque scheme. Before he went public, the auditors were told the business was worth $40 million dollars. However, Eddie kept skimming money and underreporting income for years. It got to the point where he opened so many stores, but many were very understocked, so when the auditors went to do inventory, he found out in advance which stores they were going to, load up merchandise, and then empty them out when they went on to the next location.'

187 Here's an interesting example; in my small hyper-progressive town, if you want to close your business, you have to pay a $50.00 going-out-of-business fee.

Small change. Here in Pennsylvania you pay an unemployment tax based on total payroll. Which includes owners pay. BTW: Please include owners SS# on return. Why?

Because we don't let owners ever collect a dime in unemployment proceeds. They failed.

It's the progressive delusion that business owners by definition are sitting on piles of cash that they're too selfish to spread around. So they'll force the owners into bankruptcy as a show of good faith that there's simply no money available.

199 Dunno if this was covered in this or previous thread, but the Sony executive specifically contradicting the president's press conference comment about "contacting us sooner" - wow. No, let me take that back.

This kind of unbelievable, easily discovered, brazen, pertinent lie - from the mouth of the actual "president" - has now become a commonplace. People generally over- and misuse "lie" in political contexts, and really show their ignorance when they blithely assert that all politicians are liars.

But this aspect of our national degradation never ceases to rouse (briefly) my vestigial sense of outrage. Open, brazen, easily debunked, even silly lies - often about hugely important public policies - are simply daily fare now.

Did anyone hear the administration official (not sure which, probably from State, wasn't horseface) in Senate testimony from what, 3 weeks ago or something? Rubio (cigar ashes and Cuban coffee grounds upon him, hope he is replaced next cycle) was grilling the guy with very specific q's about diplomatic news or dynamics with Cuba. The guy flat out lied about what we now know was going on.

OK, back to resigned despair and escapism. Just a brief, regrettable outbreak of "WTFF?!!!!" from someone who remembers the America of 10,000 years ago (i.e., 10 years ago).

I mean, deep, deep corruption from what is gathered and allowed. And the store "owner" from Yemen? His own facebook should put him on the no fly list. All scrubbed now. All "cleared" of her murder, but her murder is the tip of the iceberg so to speak. That evolution can produce anything.

Smartphones are not AI. Smartphones are the product of engineering, not evolution. Fundamentally different process.

Smartphones being "smarter" than humans would be a result of humans designing it to be so. If possible, it's sure not going to be accidental, and it will also take much more understanding of intelligence and ourselves than we have now, or will have in the near future.

Well, the best minds in the business, e.g. Ray Kurzweil, disagree with you. At some point, intelligence becomes self-catalyzing and then we're the slower, duller cousin.

Smartphones are the product of engineering, not evolution. Fundamentally different process.

That's exactly the point. To date, they've been engineering, but sometime in the relatively near future, they'll begin superseding us in designing intelligence. Call it engineering, or evolution, or God, the result is the same.

How does one define concepts such as motivation, goals, awareness of mortality, altruism and empathy in a machine-based intelligence? Just because a machine can develop a "new" response to a given problem set doesn't give that "new" solution any meaning outside of itself.

405 At some point, intelligence becomes self-catalyzing and then we're the slower, duller cousin.

Questionable assumption.

That's exactly the point. To date, they've been engineering, but sometime in the relatively near future, they'll begin superseding us in designing intelligence.

A human engineer designing a tool that automates designing certain types of tools is a long way from tools designing tools. We're still in a zone where it's human intelligence driving any improvements.

Like I said, computers are dumb - and it takes more than hype for them to become more than that.
