Weird: Five Days After Alleged Rape, Jackie Seems to Have Sent a Romantic Email to Ryan

This is complicated, but the email sent on Oct 3, 2012 was sent by Jackie's Mystery Date, who had the unlikely name of "Haven Monaghan." "Haven" (ahem) was supposedly forwarding an email of Jackie's to Ryan, an email in which she gushed about him.

Haven -- who had supposedly participated in a seven-man gang rape -- appears to be trying to act as a matchmaker here, letting Ryan know how very much Jackie likes him.

Now "Haven Monaghan" is very unlikely to actually exist. There is no student at UVA with that name. Nor, I would bet, in the physical world. Haven seems to be a Catfish account of Jackie's where she pretends to be this hot guy who's totally into Jackie (but who wants Ryan to know that Jackie's totally into him).

The really terrible thing is the date the email was sent -- October 3, 2012. This would be five days after the gang rape allegedly occurred.

Five days after a terrible gang-rape, and Jackie is screwing around with fake Magic Boyfriends to get another boy interested in here?

It does not seem psychologically plausible that a woman coming off a brutal, forcible gang rape would turn to silly romantic deceptions to land her man. I would think that she would have no amorous feelings for at least a few weeks (if not a few months; if not a few years).

It actually gets weirder -- and maybe even worse for Jackie. Because the gushing email she wrote about Ryan turns out to have been cribbed nearly word for word from an effusive proclamation of love ripped off from Dawson's Creek.

Here's Jackie talking about Ryan (which "Haven" then forwards to Ryan, to let him know how much Jackie likes him):

Ryan is fine. Ryan's great, actually. I mean he's smart. He's attractive. He’s funny. He’s a scaredy cat. If you creep up behind him, he'll jump right out of his skin. It's pretty amusing. He's honest. He always calls them just like he sees them. You can constantly count on getting the truth from Ryan, even if the truth hurts. He has the most incredible taste in music. He's like this walking, talking music library. And he understands how truly important music is. He's stubborn. He has this regimented way about him that can be so frustrating sometimes. And sometimes the things he says hurt. But he’s a really, really good friend. And loyal to a fault. He's realistic about everything. And I'm a dreamer so I mean, it’s good to have somebody like that in my life. He's one of my best friends here, you know? He’s more than that...he's everything.

And here's James van der Biek on Dawson's Creek, talking about Katie Holmes:

She's great. I mean, she's smart, she's beautiful, she's funny, she's a big ol' scaredy cat. If you creep up from behind her she’ll jump out of her skin. It's pretty amusing. She's honest. She always calls them just like she sees them. You can always count on getting the truth from Joey even if the truth hurts. She’s stubborn. We fight a lot. She can be so frustrating sometimes. But she's a really, really, good friend. I know her to a fault. She believes in me. And I'm a dreamer so it's so good to have somebody like that in my life. If she goes away, I don't know what I'm going to do. I mean, she's my best friend, you know? She’s more than that. She’s everything.

Sally Kohn immediately called James van der Biek a rapist.

It's driving me batty because I am nearly positive that one of my crap YA novels has a main character named Haven, not to be confused with the crap YA novel Haven itself, and I can't remember which one.

You know, Jackie has the excuse of being batshit crazy. What's Erdley's excuse? And Emily Renda's? And the dear president of UVA?

That Erdley chose Randall as Ryan's pseudonym when that is Stephen Glass's middle name is in the realm of you can't make this up.

This is actually standard student behavior these days -- a huge percentage of "essays" turned in by students are plagiarized, in part or in full, from sources on the Web. Profs spend countless hours trying to weed them out. So Jackie's doing what all lazy college students do these days -- cribbing something she needed to write.)

124 This is beyond farce. In the Duke case, the 'heroine' was found in a parking lot, bombed out of her mind. The cops found her, and she made up the rape story, because she was a three time loser. She was going to jail and lose her kids. By crying rape, they had to take her straight to the ER.
And the lies piled on. Add opportunistic SOBs, the MFM, feminists and the New (and improved!) Black Panthers, and the shitfest ran rampant for well over a year.
This seems to have snowballed as well, and no one seems to have learned anything. Thank God this thing fell apart fast.

137 You want the truth??

You can't handle the truth!!

Ryan, we live in a world that has rape, and those rapes have to be prevented by women with vaginas. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Kathryn Hedley? I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom.

You weep for victims of bogus sexual assault claims, and you curse the Social Justice Warriors. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That bogus accusations of campus rape, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives.

You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me to make these fake accusations, you need me to make these fake accusations. We use words like gang-rape, assault, PIV. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a flyer, and stand a post.

Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to.

She thought that having some other guy showing her attention would make her seem more desirable to the guy she wanted. That's fairly reasonable, except that the 1st guy wasn't just ambivalent about Jackie, but rather, it seems, pretty repulsed by her.

So she dug deeper. Rape! Rape would make Ryan rush in to save her from the horrible attack and then he would fall in love with her!

Only that didn't work either. Ryan just didn't seem to understand how much he and Jackie were meant for each other! Maybe leaked love note would do the trick!

Oh, that didn't work either? Well fuck you, men. You're all rapists! I'm becoming a feminist crusader!

191 Until the Rolling Stone article came out it sounds like Jackie was doing fine at UVA in the two years since she faked her gang-rape. She got away with it. She'd become a minor celebrity on the campus rape club circuit. Doesn't look like she'd gone mental and had to be locked up or anything.

She tried a crazy stunt to get a boy. It didn't work. But it did get her into the campus rape activism groups, who have her lots of positive feedback.

The 3 freshman friends involved in the initial story had drifted away from her -- this was first semester, they'd known each other a few week it seems.

Jackie's fakes only seem super elaborate in retrospect. It's more how easy it was to do. Go to a website that lets you fake texts from fake phone #s. Go to another site with romantic passages, copy and paste a couple, change a couple words. Whole thing takes 15 minutes, no need for elaborate planning.

213 Story time:

I gazed across the Cliffs of Moher, my eyes drawn helplessly to the sea, the terrible, turbulent, tumultuous sea that had stolen from my very grasp my father and mother and my precious sister a mere fortnight ago. It was nearly too much to bear, the weight of their loss, the great, grasping hole in my very being that was heretofore filled with their love.

I clutched tightly to the letter that had come in response to my desperate ad seeking a position. Alas, though I was loathe to do so, I was forced to take a position as a tutor. My father, though a dear, kind soul, was not blessed with an abundance of business sense and thus I was left in penury. Want that I should be forced to the streets, I would far rather dash myself upon the rocks before coming to such a fate.

Thus, I was left here, drawing my courage about me like a cloak as I made my way from the place where the carriage had left me.

"No one goes up the manor proper," the carriageman said when he left me here. "His Lordship forbids it." He gazed upon me, pity in his eye, then squeezed my wrist. "God bless you, child."

I lifted my chin high as I came to the gate. There before me, in all its dark glory, lay Monaghan Manor and inside it Lord Haven Monaghan. I steeled myself and then strode forward, determined to do my best for the niece and nephew left in his care, the fearsome reputation of their uncle of no regard.

It's basically a law among the PUA/ player types that the way to generate women's interest is to be seen with, or be perceived as able to get, other women. I can't say if that's true or not, but I'm pretty damn sure the reverse isn't-- unless the guy was already interested, and was simply too scared to open his mouth without massive prompting.

---

Good question. WaPost published the full names of her 3 friends she lied about in the story -- the ones Jackie said pressured her not to report the gang rape, and the name of the girl Jackie said told her she should have just tried to enjoy it cause they were "hot Phi Psi guys".

These people had horrible lies told about them being indifferent to rape, but their names are published everywhere.

Jackie is the only one who still has any privacy. And she's the only one who is a proven liar.

Hell, the Media printed Tawana Brawley's name and she was 15, black and obviously mentally ill since she wrote the n-word in human feces on her own chest.

Jackie was an adult, 18, at an elite college when she made up her fake rape story. There's no logical reason to protect her name at this point.

275 That's were I think there's an honest disconnect between the genders. I can only speak for myself and what I've seen in my life, but I've never heard of a dude saying, "She starting dating [name], now I must have her!" If I'm not interested, dating someone else isn't going to *make* me interested.
Posted by: Secundus

Yup. Based upon ersonal experience and those I know, the result ranges from, "oh, that's nice" to "Thank Christ, she has a hobby". This dynamic doesn't really work on guys.
I've heard that the exact opposite is true for women. I was getting attention 17 years married, and single guys were ignored WTF!?! My wife bluntly said, "If a guy is with a woman, he's a guy worth being with, and thus worthy of an effort".
So much for sisterhood.

Agreed.

Initial story was forced bjs to 5 dudes.

Somewhere in the next year or so it changed to gang-rape with 7 dudes. Probably as she tried to beat other girl's stories in the rape activism support groups.

The worse your story, the more sympathy and respect you get. A violent gang-rape beats a wishy-washy he said/she said maybe/kinda sort date rape 9 times outta 10.

Posted by: Obnoxious A-Hole at December 19, 2014 01:19 PM (PD6iL)

You know people keep saying this but I don't think it's really true. If a woman goes to the police with a story about being raped and has any corroborating evidence whatsoever, it will be taken seriously and investigated.

It's when women don't go to the police and/or their account is so outlandish (and lacking in evidence) that people become justifiably skeptical.

The idea that we must always believe a woman's story of being raped is sheer nonsense. All we're really obligated to do is take any rape charges seriously - and part of that is investigating the story to determine whether it happened, and if so how it happened, who did it, and making sure they're punished.

351 TEFFGIACOMT. C'mon guys, if you went to college, you all know a couple of dudes or chicks that wigged out that first year. It happens. Everybody gets lots of disappointments in life. Realizing you can't handle college is a big disappointment. But you're supposed to have courage and morals, and not take suck others into your raging vortex of disappointment.

352 You know people keep saying this but I don't think it's really true.

Well, I will admit, rather shamefully, that I am now looking more skeptically at the gang rape claim at William Paterson over Thanksgiving Break. That woman went to the cops and hospital immediately, there are specific people accused and there were arrests. But I am still wondering if it was actually rape.

Admittedly, at least half of that is due to that girl at NYU (I think) who claimed gang rape and the guys were arrested and one of them had the wit to tape it and that showed that, yeah, not so much. But the other half is because of this.

Now, as I said, I'm ashamed of that but, yeah, my doubt meter went up from say 2% to 10%.

I thought the same thing with the Cosby business. But I guess there's been a pattern of complaints and even police reports against him, over decades, so yeah, that's worth looking into (I haven't followed the case closely).

364 I'm no longer willing to give her the benefit of the doubt on "mentally disturbed."

Certainly she may be mentally unstable inasmuch as she fixated on (even: became obsessed with) Ryan (or Russell, or whatever his name is). But the whole story from its inception shows intent.

Now, the *original* intent may have been to trap Ryan into a relationship (from which she would then never have let him leave). But then that intent was dropped when she realized she could gain fame (of a sort) and wider sympathy by being a Rape Advocate.

Eventually that wasn't enough, either, so then she went to (or at least agreed to give her story to) Rolling Stone.

By the time the story had evolved to that point- from forced BJs to gang-rape on a broken table, and from "some guy" to "a Fraternity member at XYZ frat"- she had to know she was going to start a fire-storm.

That she did so- despite knowing that none of this had ever happened, and, in fact, having invented the story from whole-cloth is just evil.

This story's enablers, along with Ferguson, are literally demanding that we abandon due process and the law in favor of how they "feel" about a legal issue. The number of officials who seem content to allow this to continue is disturbing, much like the ones who refuse to arrest those who issued a bounty on the Ferguson policeman.

probably.

She planned out the fraud and got away with it for 2 years.

I do wonder how much, after repeating her lie for two years -- and adding to it along the way -- she had come to believe her own hoax.

The fact she tried to pull out at the last moment shows she still knew she was lying.

But, remember, she got her story told to Congress in the Spring and got away with it. Key there was Emily Renda changed Jackie's name to Jenna.

But she got her hoax in the congressional record without it blowing up in her face, she probably thought she'd get away with it in the Rolling Stone, too. At least she did right up till just before publication, then she got nervous and tried to back out.

Emily Renda, the girl who introduced Jackie to the reporter, CITED THE JACKIE RAPE CASE IN A U.S. SENATE HEARING, to Senator Harkin, about a proposed new federal law on campus rape:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vucFPORF-8

"Self-blame and victim-blame are among the primary factors that deter victims from reporting. Personal responsibilities for an attack especially when reinforced by peers undermine a survivor's sense that it is his or her right to seek justice.

One survivor I worked with did not report her gang rape until almost a year later because immediately after the attack she confided in peers who did not believe her, who told her that she was wrong about what had happened to her because those were all great guys. Her friends' responses took away her confidence to report or seek help which means those five young men went unpunished and remained a threat to the other students' throughout that year."

Notice how her voice trembles when recounting Jackie rape house on the floor of the US Senate.

This is beyond unreal.

Why is that video so little known -- why less than a thousand views?

The Accused with Jodi Foster is the pinball movie.

Apparently there's a thing about a broken glass table in Gone Girl.

Someone mentioned her writing fanfic. There's a huge subgenre of fanfic involving non-con/rape and ensuing hurt/comfort by whatever character the author is shipping with the victim. When I say huge, I mean HUGE. Hell, when whatever the new big fandom starts up, I can tell you within a minute who is going to be the one who is being victimized and who is going to save her (or him). So, yeah, it's completely unsurprising to me that a young girl would pick that scenario as her White Knight dream.

With all of her scheming, she couldn't trick her friend into liking her with a Dawson's Creek inspired love-letter forwarded by her alleged attacker, but she could get a reporter from a major publication to believe her. What's even sadder is that a forty-something reporter couldn't do anything with a smart phone and the internet.

Posted by: Terri at December 19, 2014 02:11 PM (bpemY)

412 191 Until the Rolling Stone article came out it sounds like Jackie was doing fine at UVA in the two years since she faked her gang-rape. She got away with it. She'd become a minor celebrity on the campus rape club circuit. Doesn't look like she'd gone mental and had to be locked up or anything.
___________________________

Yeah, funny thing about that rape was the fact that Jackie only told the University about it after the University came to her near the end of her first year, asking for an explanation as to why she was failing half her classes.

Jackie started out as UVA with the intention of going to med school. But she apparently was struggling with her classes. So she used the "rape" to excuse her failures -- and probably got a lot of special accommodations from the school since she was now officially a "victim."

Then, after reporting the rape, she becomes a campus advocate -- and decides to change her major to Sociology (probably the easiest major) from pre-med (one of the toughest).

That "rape" sure did come in handy for Jackie, didn't it?

I don't think its so odd for he or his pals to have held on to "evidence" - because I think he thought it could be important someday to hold a victimizer accountable.

For example, Jackie could change her mind about persuing charges, or this bad person might spread misery in the future, and need catching.s

So - instead of hitting delete, he just leaves it in the mail box or message bin.

Jackie was probably giving off strange vibes when she talked about "Haven." Ryan called her "hesitant" - in hindsight, something just seemed off that subconsciously sparked their interest in making sure he wasn't creeping.

It's amusing that Jackie's pals were so busy trying to "fool Haven" by pretending to be another girl in the same chemistry class that it didn't occur to them they were the victims of an identity ruse.
