Overnight Open Thread (12-18-2014) - Six Shopping Days Left Edition

Quote of the Day

One Cuban young woman complains to another. "He lied to me! He told me that he was a luggage handler! It turns out, he's nothing but a neurosurgeon!"

-- Cuban joke (explanation here)

Comment of the Day

You know, I never thought that gay marriage would be the way fascism would come to America. People are doing all sorts of batshit crazy things in its name.

I'm old enough to remember when people like Harvey Milk were against the whole idea and considered anybody who brought it up to be bigoted and homophobic.

U Michigan Department Chair: We Should 'Hate Republicans'

Not just disagree with or look down upon but actually hate them personally. Note that she posted this unashamedly, expects to receive accolades for it and fears no professional repercussions.

"I hate Republicans," communications department chairwoman and professor Susan J. Douglas boldly declares in the opening of the piece. "I can't stand the thought of having to spend the next two years watching Mitch McConnell, John Boehner, Ted Cruz, Darrell Issa or any of the legions of other blowhards denying climate change, thwarting immigration reform or championing fetal 'personhood.'"

She writes that although the fact that her "tendency is to blame the Republicans . . . may seem biased," historical and psychological research back her up, and so it's basically actually a fact that Republicans are bad!

Reason #77 that the modern university system needs to be radically reformed and defunded or simply ended.

By the way here is the face of hate:

Why Did Paramount Ban Showing Team America?

Well this might be one reason:

According to IMDB, Team America, while distributed by Paramount, was produced by Scott Rudin, the embattled (and uber-manic) Sony Pictures executive being eaten alive by the North Korean hacking scandal.  I wonder if he put in a frantic call to Paramount to have Team America banned as a substitute for the latest anti-North Korean movie whose production he led. (If so, the Norks will likely let us know in their next round of hacks.)

...A couple of years after Team America snuck past Paramount's leftwing censors, Mark Steyn had Hollywood's number down pat: "Hollywood prefers to make 'controversial' films about controversies that are settled, rousing itself to fight battles long won"

More Rolling Stone Dumbness: 6 Ideas for a Cop-Free World

Okay I have to wonder if the writer of this article has ever met any actual criminals or even watched a full episode of Cops. Because the ideas proposed have about a 0.0% chance of ever eliminating the need to have police. Because human nature.

Now one or two of the ideas such as citizen patrols and mental health treatment are good ideas as adjuncts to an existing police force but the thought that these ideas would ever eliminate the necessity for police is just kumbayah nonsense.

3. Restorative Justice

Also known as reparative or transformative justice, these models represent an alternative to courts and jails. From hippie communes to the IRA and anti-Apartheid South African guerrillas to even some U.S. cities like Philadelphia's experiment with community courts, spaces are created where accountability is understood as a community issue and the entire community, along with the so-called perpetrator and the victim of a given offense, try to restore and even transform everyone in the process. It has also been used uninterrupted by indigenous and Afro-descendant communities like San Basilio de Palenque in Colombia for centuries, and it remains perhaps the most widespread and far-reaching of the alternatives to the adversarial court system.

I have been following Ace for 10 years now and still wonder where some of the original "regular" commenters went like Tushar (after the birth of his twins, not a word...).  Watching the blog morph as the years go on.  Even in its new and improved, cleaned up, hoity-toity version, Ace's house feels like family.  I am sure there are many others like me and one day we will actually respond to a "lurker show yourself" thread.

It's pretty clear that the Common Core architects see math exactly this way. (I.e., people who can't handle math.)

Ace as talked a lot about it and the bottom line is that a lot of basic arithmetic simply has to be memorized. Most people aren't ever prepared to truly understand the arcana required to formalize mathematics.

The only mathematician on the panel that developed Common Core was the only vote against it.

1. GotNews - 53.1%
2. TheBlazeNow - 11.7%
3. BizPac Review - 7.9%
4. Unz Review - 6.2%
5. The Federalist - 5.5%
6. CNSNews - 3.3%
7. Telegraph - 3.3%
8. VDare - 3.1%
9. Washington Times - 2.8%
10. Daily Signal - 2.4%

Truth Revolt, Volokh, Forbes, TakiMag, and Free Beacon round out the top 15.

GotNews guy made a splash with his outing of the UVA rape hoax Jackie girl. His personal twitter feed also so huge growth in recent weeks

TheBlazeNow is The Blaze's new breaking news twitter feed. All the top news sites have a separate acct for just breaking news. Most popular are @cnnbrk, @bbcbreaking, and @breakingnews (run by nbc). They have millions of followers, @TheBlazeNow only has 11.5k, but it's growing at a nice pace.

BizPacReview is something I rarely visit, but seems nice. Started as a Florida site but has branched out to cover more national news. Very orange site design.

I find conservative media fascinating so I track a bunch of sites to see how they're doing.

Gorbachev's economic program had already resulted in a few brave capitalist firms coming in to set up shop in Moscow on a pilot basis, testing the waters for their merchandise. It was enthusiastically received.

One young Muscovite male was captured saying to another one, "Da, and when I tell a cute girl that I have a part time job working at McDonalds, I get a date _every time_!"

The @FoxNews main feed has breaking news but also has dumb stuff like telling people to tune in to Megyn Kelly and say hi or retweeting something from Greta or Hannity or other Fox personalities and shows. Breaking news feed needs to be just actual breaking news for news junkies, no fluff.

IIRC, Germany calculated that after a certain date, they would not be able to win a war against France & Russia, so they had a reason to go to war before that. They had to win a war now, or be doomed to lose one later, in other words.

The breaking news twitter war, CNN dominates:

And most of those people aren't political. They just associate CNN with news. Which is the reason why MSM still has a stranglehold on disseminating news. Of those 21.8M, 21M will see the "Republicans are Evil" headline and go on about their day. They won't ever actually read a counter argument to the story. And since CNN is the most trusted name in news, well I guess Republicans are Evil.

264 I follow @breakingnews (which is run by NBC on the downlow).

Most of the breaking news feeds are less overtly political than the regular news feeds since the breaking news stuff tends to be about disasters and crimes and emergencies and deaths -- the kind of stuff they interrupt a regular news broadcast for.

The choice of what counts as breaking news is, of course, political. But often it's just something horrible that happened.

Latest is there's some horrible thing that happened in Australia. Pretty much all the breaking news feeds are covering it.

Not sure about that. I remember how Sontag stood up for Rushdie.

(I know, I know, I keep bringing up that guy but for some reason I keep thinking ol' "Joseph Anton" is relevant here.)

Clooney I think always wanted to be a hero, but he's never been given the chance. So every time he's presented himself as the hero it's rung as false - to himself as well. I think the South Park "Smug" episode got under his skin.

If Clooney now wants to be the hero and will stick by it, I'll remember him as a hero, like I remember Sontag (and Hitchens, and Ibn Warraq).

I recently, like 3 weeks ago, downloaded Audacity for my new Win build of my computer. No virus issues that I am aware of. But the big problem is the damned DRM. I used to use an audio recorder app that basically presented on-screen like the front panel of a cassette recorder, and it would record anything that was going through your sound card to the speakers. Then I made the mistake of installing some damfool Windows XP service pack, and it quit working. The record features were actually grayed out, as they are in my current install of Audacity, which is a damned useful audio editor, too. The record company Nazis, working in cahoots with Microsoft, don't want us to record streaming versions of their content.

Work-arounds. One that I tried, with sub-par results, was to loop back from the speaker output to the line-in jack on the sound card, and tell the recorder function to record from the line-in source. Doesn't seem to cause feedback, but getting accurate levels is a pain. Some kind of little break-out box with a stereo level control, or maybe a simple preamp could help a lot. Another I tried, successfully, was to use a boombox I have with a built-in mp3 recorder (records on a memory stick) as the recorder app. Again, take a feed off the computer's speaker jack. And again, a preamp or signal conditioner of some kind would help greatly. Another work-around that was recommended to me, but which I have not tried, is to install another sound card in an expansion slot on the motherboard (I have on-board audio). Listen to the streaming program on the MB sound unit, and record using the expansion card. Again, probably have to link the speakers of one to the line-in of the other.

335 209 So someone just drove up the long driveway here. I turned on the outside lights, and they floored it backwards down the driveway. Creeped the heck out of me. The German Shepherd here is now going deaf and blind and said not a word... It is pitch black normally here at this time- 1130pm. I think I will keep the lights on overnight just to scare them away if they come back. It was a pickup truck with lots of stuff in back. I wonder if they were here to steal something?
Posted by: Baldy

OK, that is creepy. Keep your lights on, definitely. I do think they were "casing the joint," but in most instances those are just "crimes of opportunity" -- which means they won't be coming back if it looks like your house is a "problem." Most criminals look for the easiest target, and don't go out of their way to break into something difficult or well-defended.

I live in a what is generally a very low-crime area, but there was one recent (over a year ago, by now, actually) incident right nearby that illustrates the "crime of opportunity" theory:

Two robbers/criminals were casing this neighborhood, and saw a house that seemed a. Lived in, generally, but b. At this moment unoccupied, and c. Had a lot of breakable windows for entry. So they went down the driveway and were nosing around, trying to figure out if no one was home (correct assumption) and which window to break for quickest entry.

But at that exact moment, the homeowner, a woman, pulled up in her own car, to find the robbers' car blocking her driveway. She looked down toward her house, saw them, and (foolishly, in my opinion) confronted them, saying something like, "Hey you! What are you doing on my property???"

They replied with a con-artist line, something like, "Oh, we're selling magazine subscriptions -- do you want to buy a magazine?"

She didn't fall for it, and continued to (foolishly, in my opinion) confront them, saying, "You're lying -- you have no clipboard or materials. Get off my driveway or I'll call the cops!"

Well, you can guess what happened next: One of the thugs quickly changed plans, and what started as a house burglary became a mugging: He punched her in the head, knocking her to the cement, grabbed her purse, and they both hopped in the car and sped off.

It was I -- yes, me -- who by sheer accident was out in front of my domicile at this exact moment, about 3/4 of a block away, and heard her scream, and tires screeching, and turned my head to look, just as a car with two guys in it rocketed past at about 75 mph.

Not yet knowing anything of what I have just described here, I thought I had just witnessed the aftermath of a hit-and-run -- I thought some jerks were speeding on our street and hit a pedestrian, causing her to scream, and were speeding away.

I could not see where it had happened (not in line of sight from my house), so I immediately went in and called 911.

The cops came (a lot of other people had called too), and for some reason I couldn't convince them that I was an eyewitness -- they just told me to back off from the crime scene, like all the other rubberneckers.

Eventually I found the senior officer on the scene and explained that I was an eyewitness, and after a while they came and interviewed me.

I was able to describe one of the guys, and the car, and even the make and year of the car (after researching it on the internet), and most importantly a special detail about the license plate.

Armed with my info, I presume, the cops eventually did find and arrest the two perps! Took them three weeks, but they got 'em. Based on (takes bow) the exact description of the getaway vehicle, which they were still driving when spotted by a patrolman many days later.

Anyway, the upshot of this story is: This crime was a good example of a double-whammy crime of opportunity: First, they chose the house at random because it looked vulnerable; and then they mugged her because she looked vulnerable. If they had been repelled or scared off, they never would have returned -- they would have just gone out and looked for another easy victim somewhere else.

The comments at my employer, PJM, are slightly better than HotAir, but frankly there generally just aren't enough commenters and comments to reach spontaneous self-combustion level, and there is no "community" or commenters, nor do threads build and riff on themselves. Posted by: Mr. Moo Moo at December 18, 2014 11:33 PM (0LHZx)

Exploratory drilling can shut down in a virtual heartbeat. Rigs actively drilling will finish their wells, then get racked. Wells that are on-stream and pumping will usually continue to pump, unless they are too costly to operate at low prices, and then they will be shut in until prices recover.

There may be a good window of opportunity for me to get together with some other under-employed patch cronies, and buy some marginal wells from medium-sized companies. Wells that don't produce enough to justify their presence on the company's balance sheet, but which could provide a steady income for a small, focused group.

The HotAir comments section is frankly, short-bus quality. The Blaze is worse.

Posted by: IllTemperedCur

Concur. That's why I'm here.

The comments at my employer, PJM, are slightly better than HotAir,
but frankly there generally just aren't enough commenters and comments
to reach spontaneous self-combustion level, and there is no "community"
or commenters, nor do threads build and riff on themselves. This is one
of the few places that is "en fuego" comment-wise -- which I why I'm
here - -'cause I'm a metaphorical pyromaniac.

417 Zombie, at the beginning, when it was just Roger Simon, there was lots of good commentary. Several of us frequent commenters started our own blog called Flares, which started off great but never found a niche and couldn't sustain itself. Real life, etc. getting in the way. PJM seems to lack a dynamism it used to have. Don't know why. Would love to see it hit its stride again.

Yep, postdoc and my boss is German. Which means that while I like how he approaches science, whenever the discussion veers into politics...ugh.

For example - not too long ago he mentioned how much better infrastructure is handled in Germany (by technocrats). However, there was a report in Der Spiegel not 3 months ago lamenting how German infrastructure is pretty much falling apart due to...well, the same problems we have here.

But otherwise, I like his tutelage.

It'd be difficult to do that since they are using the old actors and they're 30 years older than they were in Return of The Jedi, and Heir takes place 5 years after. Yeah taking some ideas and themes from it would have been nice.

I still think they could have done a great tv series based off the X-Wing novels.

445 PJMedia is a weird beast. There's something missing. Not sure what. Insty dominates, of course, but he's separate. It doesn't have an identity, I guess. I don't have a good sense of any overall feel. There are several columnists there I like and read.

Klavan, Hanson, Zombie, Spengler, Adams. Insty, of course.

I think of PJMedia and HotAir as similar. Not sure why. A lot more columnist star power at PJMedia. Maybe it's just the kinda grab-bag assortment at PJMedia. There's no organizing theme or structure. So seems a bit of a mush in my head, I guess.

Maybe that's why it reminds me of HotAir. But I think HotAir is doing for that moderate mush feel, while PJMedia has people all over the spectrum, so the mush feeling is from the jumble of voices, not an intent to be the mellow moderate voice of calm.

Registration systems tend to put a damper on that. Especially Disqus.

The reason that the comments here are so active is that they are all linear. With Disqus, et al., You see on post, and then a response to that, and the a response to the response, &c. For a low traffic comment section, it's fine, but when you get hundreds of comments, you end up scrolling and scrolling without hitting anything but a response to a response.

Honestly, it's not worth it.

His classes are always just under the number where you get a TA;he doesn't mind, as he cannot stand the idea of a loathsome moonbat TA. Instead he just recruits former students (many ex-military) to help him out, in return for full-service recommendation and connection services - so a good deal for both.

Anyway, just another small anecdote of how outrageous, absurd, and pernicious things are in academia. Highly qualified, wildly popular teachers being hobbled and harrassed by complete idiots.

Speaking of conservative LIVs, it is one remaining source of mild amusement to hear Hannity attempt to get Israeli ambassadors to the US to concur with his polemical (usually sound) swipes at the latest idiocy from the administration. He seems actually not to understand that ambassadors don't do that, it's kind their jobnot to do that.

>The BFD right now is that the ruble took a major dive several days ago; it lost about 20% of it's value against the dollar in one day. Last I heard, the exchange rate was 60 rubles to the dollar.

The major issue at hand: several Russian companies have sizable
loans due (multiple billions of $), and those loans have to be paid in dollars/euros... the ruble is basically toilet paper. And, the average Ivan is getting seriously screwed by the whole mess.

599 435 Can someone put some knowledge to me. Obviously Iowahawk is making fun of some dumb liberal meme, but I don't twitter and so I'm not familiar with it. When I click on the hashtag, it links to several thousand differing topics.
Posted by: Darth Randall

The Knowledge:

1. Hostage crisis in Sydney -- Muslim maniac kills two, gets killed, country in shock.

2. In aftermath, Australian moonbat Drama Queens tried to "steal the narrative" by making the story NOT about how a Muslim terrorist killed people, but RATHER about how awful right-wingers will now attack all Muslims at random in revenge. So the nation went into a Fretting Frenzy over a (completely nonexistent) threatened retaliation terror campaign against Muslims, perpetrated by evil conservatives.

3. To prove how caring and loving they are, moonbats in Australia started a hashtag called ""#I'llRideWithYou" meaning that the moonbats are offering to escort Muslims to and from home as sort of flabby unarmed bodyguard unicorn fairies, to defend them against wild-eyed gun-toting conservatives.

4. No revenge attacks ever occurred, but even so the lefties thereby claimed The Moral High Ground by having forestalled the revenge massacres by having offered to "ride" with Muslims.

5. Iowahawk riffed on it by showing a 9/11 hijacked plane, on which the moonbats could act as escorts for the blameless Muslims.

My cross-shift was telling me his former company, which "retired" him with a package upon getting a new CEO, dropped from $52 to a the single digits, yet they are still a dividend-paying producer. I might up the number of shares of companies I currently own, to average down my cost of acquisition. And maybe it's time to sell off one or two of the dogs, take a capital loss to offset capital gains on one of the others, or just to bank the loss against future gains. Posting a quoted passage of text? Pixy doesn't recognize some Unicode characters. Go through the quoted text, and delete quotation marks (") apostrophes (') and em-dashes (longer than normal dashes), and replace with their counterparts on your keyboard. Works for me, most of the time.

Yeah, I suggested that here, at the time, and basically got laughed at for it. I expect, though, that it would take a hell of a lot of courage for a muslima to shit-can the hijab, even if she did feel shame for being a muslim, because it's fear of punishment, mostly that drives them to wear it, other than the few supremacist women muzzies.

I'd like everybody to know that there are many people like me that are Moslem born, and being called a Moslem is the greatest insult for them. 710 Re: North Korea, there's a South Korean live action show called City Hunter (no relation to the Japanese manga/anime) that starts with a flashback to South Korea sending a black ops team to North Korea right after the airline bombing. (Includes a nice review of other bad stuff NK has done.) Very rah-rah. You will understand why South Koreans sometimes don't like those guys up north. So yeah, the first fifteen or twenty minutes are awesome South Korean action.

(The plotline of the actual show is that the South Korean black ops guys are betrayed by their own politicians after finishing the mission flawlessly; and that the one guy who survives raises a boy to go kill off the politicians whom he blames, and then the young man has to make his own decisions. Sort of like an Eighties revenge of the bitter guy out in the desert episode, except turned into a whole series.)

I also hate one line comment sections, which PJM seems to be. Kos is like that, and we know how that place sucks.

The main reason I love the HQ is the humor and that includes all the stinky socks. When a site uses Disqusting or some other commenting platform, one is locked in with a nick, so no socks.

I don't need to read about ?Wood Stars, but I'm not interested in any of them. Some are rich because of being in right place @ right time. Others, very few aiMHO have talent & rest because of family.

I know you write at PJ Media & registered to comment but never have. I wasn't happy with Roger L. Simon loving Rick & Anita Perry & then his trashing of Perry soon after.

In MHO you don't endorse a candidate unless you've vetted him/her.n

756 Watching Christmas Vacation on DVD at work. Came out in 1989. One of my favorite Christmas movies. 2 of the 4 grandparents are now dead, Randy Quaid is insane now, and Bev D'Angelo has had too many facelifts, looks terrible. Anyway, a very fun movie.

757 750 -- B-DD -- I just started realizing that the characters in their off duty hours they are some of the dullest mofos in the galaxy.

Truth be told, most of the 'interesting' characters in the series were more than a little whacked.

IMO, the biggest problem was that the studio wanted to break with the original series... Picard was the anti-Kirk; they avoided having a Vulcan in the show at all costs, like-wise no Scotty analog.

In their zeal to show their 'originality', they gutted the character dynamic... even Data was totally flat until the writers got a clue, and turned Spiner loose. Yeah, I know they had more eye-candy with some of the female cast, but that aspect of the series stayed strictly vanilla (with some minor exceptions).

And for me, the slow, but steady, creep of PC finally made me lose interest... the final season drove me away.

761 757 -- Part II -- IMO, ST - TNG didn't change for the better until the fan revolt broke out over the infamous 'guy in mini-dress' episode.

That's when the studio boys finally woke up and realized that the fans would tank the series if they didn't stop fucking around with the franchise.

Posted by: CPT. Charles at December 19, 2014 04:19 AM (/mTq0)

762 I'm not sure the studio boys got the message. TNG just pissed me off the longer it ran. The episode where all the federation starships were limited to warp 5 because of the damage to the time space continuum from excessive warp use was the last fucking straw for me. How fucking stupid was that?

Yeah... that was the end for me as well... don't forget, 'environmentalism' was all the rage at that point in the RL. So yeah... warp drive doing environmental damage to sub-space was like...

...fuck you... fuck Star Trek. That was the death knell for TNG.

After that, I turned my back on the whole franchise (except TOS). No to DS9... no to Voyager.

Thank gawd for the prequel series; they finally redeemed the franchise with that storyline... pity it ended after 4 seasons.

764 Such a waste.

Some moonbat (by the name of "Mark Bryan," as far as I can tell) is an amazingly talented illustrator -- but he wastes his talent depicting delusional leftist fantasy scenarios.

In this example, he illustrates the evils of nuclear power by visualizing the impending meltdown of the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant on the California coast:

http://www.indybay.org/uploads/2014/12/16/devils-due-meltdown-at-diablo-canyon.jpg

Setting aside the tragedy of his political obsessions, really fabulous work!

Now if only he was on our side, we could set him to work making some impactful allegorical imagery promoting freedom. Oh well.
