Details of the Unilateral Executive Cuba Deal

Some good, some bad.

Loosened travel restrictions

...

A dozen different licenses allow Americans to travel to Cuba, and requirements for getting them will be relaxed....

Authorized travelers will also be able to use their U.S. credit and debit cards in Cuba, something not previously allowed. That could make it much easier for people to go to Cuba.

Bringing back goods

...

Under the new rules, authorized visitors will be allowed to bring back $400 worth of goods -- including $100 worth of alcohol and tobacco products combined. In the past, it has been illegal to bring back any of Cuba’s famed cigars and rum.

...

Sending money

It will be easier for people in the U.S. to send money to Cuba under the changes....

Billions already are sent annually by Cubans living in the United States....

Human rights

Republicans are ripping the deal for doing little to improve human rights in Cuba. The White House appears to have dropped its opposition to a Cuban presence at the 2015 summit of the Americas in Panama, but says has that Cuban civil society “must be allowed” to participate.

Meh.

I'm not sure I really care. The previous policy, whether the right policy or not, has not yet toppled the Castro regime. I think this new policy will almost certainly increase the chances the Castro regime continues, near to mid-term, but I think we're talking about increasing the chances from 98% to 98%, so I'm not especially bothered.

I supported the anti-Castro plank because the Republican-voting Cuban exiles in Florida wanted me to. But lately, they seem to voting for Democrats, and they don't seem to care about the Cuba embargo as much.

So I guess I don't really have any incentive to continue to support a policy I was only supporting as a favor to a political ally.

Below, Marco Rubio tears Obama as the worst negotiator in the modern era, noting that Obama got "nothing" out of this deal -- no structural undertakings towards freedom on Cuba's behalf -- except freeing 53 political prisoners. (Who could be re-imprisoned in a week.)

Update: Jeb Bush leaps to say how much he despises "the Castro brothers."

2 My feeling is that Obama is a dangerous tyrannical asshole, even if this change in policy might bring down the communist regime.

More visitors to Cuba will mean more opportunities for Cubans to know they are living in a sick twisted prison. That Miami is just 90 miles away is almost impossible to believe.

But Obama is still a tyrannical dangerous asshole.

Also, back before the revolution, Cuba and Puerto Rico were in a cultural revolution of sorts, I think; both argue which of them created salsa music and a lot of the rum drinks we take for granted. Doubt will will find a secret flourishing of that once great culture once the gates to Cuba are flung open wide. What could have been...

54 Someone explain to me how an American traveling to Cuba is going to improve the life of some cab driver in a wheezie, 1960 Pontiac, trying to drive them downtown to a bar.

It always comes back to money with the Democrats. They think if they just throw money at a problem, the problem will disappear.

Where do they think those "billions" Cuban Americans send to Cubans is going? It sure as hell isn't staying with the ordinary Cuban. The entire island is one big police state. As a poster earlier stated, ordinary citizens don't dare paint their house lest the secret police come down on them demanding to know where the money is coming from. Whatever extra money anyone gets is siphoned off by the government..Remember, everything in Cuba is free, which means that no one has more than anyone else, and that includes money.

Does this regime actually think that millions of Americans are going to flock to Cuba now for vacations? That the ordinary Cuban is going to be running up and down the beach, selling fake Rolex's and Gucci shoe stores will spring up next to some casino to the throngs of American tourists? or Disney is going to partner with Castro and build Cubaland?

He is so stupid that he ended up the prisoner of people he idolized.

So the deal is this:

We release3 communist spies, and in return, Cuba released a communist idiot. To celebrate this mutual freeing of communists, we recognize a repressive communist regime.

He does this by starting a long debate between the three of them, with the old school Cuban guy coming on the side of keeping the embargo in place, and his ex fiancee siding with him in thinking the embargo needs to end.

At the time I saw that I was like, what the crap... no one cares about this, this issue is not relevant, that is never gonna happen. So one more reason to hate Obama is he managed to make a silly Trudeau show about GOP RINOS as seen by the left politically timely...

The only funny thing about it is that the character is always trying to position himself to be the next presidential nominee...which actually I think is spot on with Rubio, hah.

Before the wall fell there was a sort of film-noir spy mystique about being in East Berlin, but after teh wall fell it was revealed to be just another screwed up poor place. I think any opening of Cuba will have that effect on the American Left. As their symbol of resistance to Yankee Imperialism and Colonialism there was a romantic atmosphere of the Great Struggle. However, once that goes away you end up with a warm East Berlin - just another screwed up poor place.

I don't think the Leftist Romance of Cuba can survive without the American embargo.

178 I suspect much of the country will feel the way Ace does. There is a strong moral argument to continue our policy, partly because it is demanded by Cuban Americans. If their no longer as supportive of the embargo, then maybe we ought to reconsider. But Cuba is not China, Cuba is not an African country, Cuba is not just a country in America. It is 90 miles away. We can litterally see it from our house. We have a strategic base on Cuba. Our position should remain that we will normalize relations when Cuba becomes a normal country that recognizes human rights, when the Castro brothers are gone.

And American sugar growers (in Florida) would be screwed.

Big Corn. There's lots of sugar grown in the Caribbean that's tariffed out of the market. Florida sugar growers are small beer.

Yasser Arafat had a schtick whereby he would speak to the global English-language press in the morning, and tell them he and the PLO were all for peace with Israel, endorsing a two-state solution, et cetera.

Then in the afternoon, after the Anglophone journalistas had all gone off to file copy and get drunk at lunch in the hotel, Arafat would speak in Arabic to the Middle East press corps, and clarify that nothing had changed and the actual long-range goal continued to be to "push the filthy Jews into the sea".

Rubio has adopted that same routine.

Rubio will give alphabet network TV interviews in English where he says, "Of COURSE people given amnesty under my plan aren't going to get voting citizenship and benefits right away."

Then Rubio will go speak to Univision in Spanish and say, "Of COURSE you get the vote and the government benefits right away, amigo! Si se puede!"

263 There was an interesting article a while back about how LA is pretty much catering to China and the Middle East customers now. All the high end shops have a chinese speaking salesperson, and people in the middle east are snapping up LA real estate. Some sheikh did a helicopter flyover of giant beachside palaces, and without stepping a foot in any of them picked one right from the air. They buy these huge palaces in CA and move their fam into it like a giant secured compound.

Opening up ourselves to those countries for a "Cultural Exchange" has helped us how, exactly? The rich of those countries get to roll around in Western decadence and the glory of capitalism, and the rest of the suckers in their countries can go hang. How will Cuba be different?

I was in East Berlin a couple of times before the fall of the Wall, and there and all over East Germany right after unification.

Which I'm glad to have witnessed, because the West Germans completely spiffed the place up in a few short years. There's not much of a difference now.

Especially Berlin. The East Berlin neighborhoods are the trendiest places. It takes a map, a keen eye, and a good memory to even know where the Wall was.
The hotel I stayed in in 2010 charged 19 Euro for breakfast. Even though I was on an expense account there was no way I could bring myself to spend that on breakfast in East Berlin.

Makes me wonder, actually...

Who hammered Berlin harder? The 8th Air Force? Or the Soviets when they rolled the ground troops in? SAC hit the city repeatedly, but the Soviets were carrying a grudge. And many of the Germans still fighting at that point were the Nazi fanatics who refused to surrender.

It also puts me in mind of the 'Band of Brothers' episode that opens and closes with members of the company overseeing German civilians who are cleaning up the rubble that comprises what's left of their city.

345 In 2011 a large scale mitochondrial sequencing in Mexican Americans revealed 85 to 90% of mtDNA lineages of Native American origin, with the remainder having European (5-7%) or African ancestry (3-5%). Thus the observed frequency of Native American mtDNA in Mexican/Mexican Americans is higher than was expected on the basis of autosomal estimates of Native American admixture for these populations i.e. ~ 30-46%. You may now continue.

I wonder if that indicates that the Conquistadors and early epidemics didn't kill off as many of the natives as are usually thought to have.

First they came for the actors, but because I'm in radio, I said, "They're right over there." *points*

423 @397 Yeah, they were after all the atrocities the Nazis committed in Russia. Many thousands of German women committed suicide after being raped by the Slavic horde. Surprisingly, I seem to have read somewhere that it mostly wasn't the front line combat troops doing the raping, but the follow on troops.
------------------

The frontline troops wouldn't have had the time. Both the Germans and the Soviets liked to keep their formations constantly fighting on the frontlines right up until the units were shadows of their former strength, and then pull them out to rest, refit, and get enough replacements to be brought back up to strength. Replacements weren't fed into the units as needed like they were in the Western armies.

You read the histories of some of the battles, and you'll find that a panzer division that started the campaign with a full compliment of tanks was finally pulled off the line when it had less than a dozen still operational.

455 Ah the Eastern Front.

Sure the Germans had their little death squads to kill untermenschen to give new lands for the Germanic people.

On the Soviet side the NKVD would shoot anyone they found retreating. The partisans set about scorching their own countryside while trying to kill Germans.

But after Kursk, if was revenge for the Rodina. So any woman the Soviet forces, including Asiatics, found was fair game on the march to Berlin. There was also looting. Red Army guy running the Soviet flag up in Berlin, they airbrushed out his two wristwatches. The Soviets stole everything they could, even light switches to be returned to the USSR. One of the greatest treasures of modern times, Priam's Gold, is still held by Russia after being liberated from a conquered Berlin.

In other words the Eastern Front was brutal, vicious, and positively inhumane because two totalitarian regimes with no care for the individual were fighting each other.

I started playing Company of Heroes 2 again the other night. The focus at release was the Eastern Front, and the campaign has you playing as part of the Soviet army. When you get to Stalingrad (actually your second time visiting Stalingrad, since the prologue mission takes place there), you're informed that Order 227(?) is in effect, and cowards will be shot. Sounds like an interesting bit of flavor, right?

WRONG!

There's a Retreat button that you have access to. Selecting a squad and pushing the button causes the squad to rapidly disengage and run back to your HQ. It's useful for getting your troops out of heavy fire and back to where they can rest up for another go. Except that, starting with that Stalingrad mission, an NKVD Comissar will sometimes show up at your HQ, and hang out there for about a minute. And if you have a retreated squad waiting there, then he'll start shooting the squad members.

^^;;

I'm sorry to hear of so many reunions ending. Just a further reminder of a great generation nearing its end.

They really couldn't have made much of a difference.) The Japanese were more interested in ramming Allied shipping. The Navy suffered more casualties at Okinawa due to Kamikaze attacks than the had in the entire war.

520 The Luftwaffe had two distinct special units that I can recall off the top of my head.

One unit, I think SG27, flew heavily armored FW-190s against the bomber forces with limited success. The extra armor was the culprit as it slowed the fighters down.

Then there was Elba Commando which took stripped down worn out fighters, usually Bf-109Gs armed with maybe only the nose cannon, and their mission was to try and cut off the tail or nose of a bomber with a wing; thus allowing the pilot to bail out and fight again. Again only limited success.

Americans will drown in bitter tears of remorse and sorrow when Annie remake, the one with black people, is only film playing at decadent neighborhood multiplex.

Read about him in "Bloodlands." The commander, a known drug addict and lunatic, was shot after Warsaw, but because he failed to follow orders and eventually pissed off Himler.

His unit was made up of convicts and reprobates who made their mark in Belarus.

Please note: that is not a condemnation of all Ukrainians and Latvians.

Posted by: J.J. Sefton at December 17, 2014 05:34 PM (CMkNk)"

The Ukrainians were in a situation similar to the Finns in that their primary enemy was the Soviet Union led by Josef Stalin and the only people that they could ally themselves with were the Nazis. The Ukrainians had also been on the receiving end of the Holodomor which Walter Duranty received the Pulitzer prize for denying. Just as Jews are overrepresented on the political left in the United States today, Jews were a higher percentage of the Communist Party and of political commissars than they were of the general population. This does not mean that there was not a history of irrational, historical antisemitism among Ukrainians or that they were justified in their behavior. However, the Ukrainians had experienced direct personal harm and it is a human emotion to seek revenge against people who share characteristics with the people who harmed them.

Ukrainians were not uniquely down on Jews. The book "Savage Continent: Europe in the Aftermath of WW II" documents the war of extermination that Poles and Ukrainians fought against each other in 1945 as well as the ethnic cleansing and extermination campaigns that pretty much everybody waged against the ethnic Germans outside of Germany in the mid to late 1940s.

At FR the Christians spend hours explaining the horros of Mormonism. I tell them I have some questions about Christianity so I'm headed off to find a Mormon. They hate that.

Thanks for the book tip. Going on my list.

I spent time in Eastern Europe on business in the past and had an old polish colleague tell me about the Poles and Ukranians killing each other as late as 1948. I never heard of it until then.

Under communist rule in E. Europe, there were alot of things the west never bothered reporting or bothered learning about. A bit strange actually.

635 Weighing in late, and possibly swimming against the stream, but I've never been in favor of an embargo against Cuba, at least not for the past 20 years or so (since the wall came down). All Castro did was send us his criminals anyway. Much better that we sent them blue jeans and bought their rum and cigars...because as they get more prosperous it's going to be harder to keep them in chains.

I'm expecting the same result out of ever-urbanizing China, for what it's worth.
