Professor Has Simple Answer to Screechy Student Demanding Delay in Exams Due to Heart-Ache Over Ferguson

A professor at Oberlin -- Lena Dunham's old stomping grounds -- of all places.

You can read the letter at Reason, or in this link.

When I read this, I thought what I'm about to quote below was a joke.

It's not. It's real. This really happened:

After receiving his professor;s response, the student posted the exchange publicly to Facebook, with the message: "TRIGGER WARNING: Violent language regarding an extremely dismissive response from a professor. This is an email exchange I had with my professor this evening. ... We are obviously not preaching to the choir. Professors and administration at Oberlin need to be held accountable for their words and actions and have a responsibility to their students."

More: An op-ed from a Harvard Law student, explaining that his classmates aren't whiny and entitled. Just really really serious about Justice.

Delaying Exams Is Not a Request from 'Coddled Millennials'

...

Drawing comparisons to events surrounding the Civil Rights Movement and other times of intense turmoil, these opponents portray today's law students as coddled millennials using traumatic events as an excuse for their inability to focus on a three-hour exam. In essence, law students are being told to grow up and learn how to focus amidst stress and anxiety -- like "real" lawyers must do.

Speaking as one of those law students, I can say that this response is misguided: Our request for exam extensions is not being made from a position of weakness, but rather from one of strength and critical awareness. . . .

Where some commentators see weakness or sensitivity, perhaps they should instead see strength--the strength to know when our cups of endurance have run over and when the time for patience has ended. Perhaps they should instead see courage--the courage to look our peers in the eyes and uncomfortably ask them to bear these burdens of racism and classism that we have together inherited from generations past. We have taken many exams before, but never have we done this. We are scared, but no longer will we be spectators to injustice. . . .

No, I see it as more excuse-making for the generation which does very little except make excuses as to why they can't handle the most basic aspects of their jobs.

40 Really like that he didn't even engage in conversation.

Is this what schools are producing today - students so exquisitely sensitive to the feelings of others that they write a lengthy letter asking for special treatment on others' behalf, completely unbidden?

That is a mighty big assumption she's making - that non-white fellow students are incapable of dealing with their emotions, and not even capable of asking for a delay all by themselves. Pretty racist, donchathink???

Posted by: Lizzy at December 16, 2014 02:58 PM (ABcz/)

41 He should count himself lucky. I had a Pol Sci prof that wrote for publication in four languages, and spoke more than that. I watched a fellow student who constantly cut class crash and burn at the final.
The problem? Iy had one essay question on it. If you read that sectio, or attended those classes, you were good. e signed off after ten minutes and wlaked on out.

A Chemistry prof quietly wondered why his colleagues hated Friday afternoon classes, with their tales of empty classrooms. he never had that problem. he also never administered midterms or finals. Instead, he organized his classes in weekly units, with quizzes every Friday.

45 I griped about this last night on the ONT.
I just gave out final exams where I teach (private university).

I realized that some of the topics were weighty, so I gave a 15 minute review before the exam. I even solved some of the questions on the blackboard in the review. I even "accidentally" failed to erase the blackboard before handing out the exam. And so the blackboard had the solution to two of the most difficult questions right there, in plain sight, for 90 more minutes.

Four students still managed to get those questions wrong.

Oberlin Students Fight for Academic Leniency

As of Thursday evening, over 1,300 students had signed a petition drafted by College junior Kiki Acey and other students of color demanding President Krislov suspend the standard grading system in the aftermath of the high-profile cases of Michael Brown, Eric Garner and Tamir Rice.

The petition, which was first circulated across Facebook and via email on Tuesday, calls for the College to institute a "no-fail mercy period" that would eliminate all failing grades and make a C the lowest possible grade a student could receive.

The idea to request a suspension of the standard grading system was brought up during one of the many actions that students of color organized last week.

97 See brown people can't control their feelings. You really can't hold them to the same standard.

According to Delia, brown people aren't even in enough control of their lives to ask the professor themselves. Delia appointed herself protector of the brown students. Bet she didn't even run this by any of them before penning the letter. The casual racism is breathtaking.

Talk about the soft bigotry of low expectations.

Juxtapose it with Megan McArdle's unintentionally hilarious article about how good white middle and upper class women need to learn how to stop being pleasey pleasers and say no and mean it. Yeah, no means no and people need to learn both how to say it and how to accept it when it is said to them.

You know what? I feel sorry for the children who have been raised like this. Protecting your children from absolutely everything isn't helping them. It's stunting them. It's keeping them from being their own people. It's infantalizing them.

It's setting them out in the horrible wilds of life naked, with their Achilles' cut and covered in bbq sauce.

No, these children don't know better because no one has ever taught them better. Thus, when someone attempts to do so, they have no ability to process that event.

I do feel sorry for them. Not sorry enough not to point and laugh but still sorry.

This week, Oberlin students have been working on a list of demands to present to the administration. The demands currently include instituting weighted referenda* for students of color, creating central spaces for deans to meet with students on a weekly basis, and giving students the power to hire and fire the position of the Dean of Students.

You could literally hear the little bastards all over the store.

I had to stop myself from going up to the "mother" and saying, "Give me five minutes with your kids. That's all I'm asking."

295 "Through my synagogue, I spent time working with other high
schoolers to raise awareness about homelessness and economic injustice."

Out here in the SF Bay Area, elite liberal yuppie parents are absolutely squirmingly desperate to find ways to distinguish their brats at university application time.

Top grades and SAT scores just aren't enough, because grade inflation and test coaching have erased most such distinctions between top performing high schoolers.

So it's down to the extracurriculars. Music and athletics used to be the ticket. But not any longer. Now it's absolutely got to be something "social justice" related -- for instance, exactly like Della Kurzner-Zlotnick's silly schtick of "homelessness awareness".

This is funny at least in part because many of the parents of the applicants in question are essentially absolutely ruthless capitalist robber barons who would eviscerate puppies for a few extra bucks on the IPO price.

Yet they will, I kid you not, go on to spend tons of money to set up actual charitable foundations, whose only real purpose is to front for their kids in various fashionable liberal nonsense to impress the Ivy admissions offices.

That's the thing! If you boil it down to evolutionary reductionism, the selfish reason to have and raise children is so you have a useful member of society to take care of you when you can't take care of yourself.

It's astounding that so many people would choose to raise a child in such a manner that the child would be emotionally incapable of taking care of a demented parent, but that's probably going to happen when the traditional roles of disciplinarian and comforter are blurred. Or merged in the case of the single mom, which is far more often the case.

I seriously don't get how parents can let their kids behave like that.

I have a 7yr old with very severe ADHD. His sister can be a right terror (by my estimation). Yet almost everywhere we go we're stopped by the older generation and thanked for the behavior of our children.

Of course, it could have something to do with the fact that if my kids had tried that, not only would they have ended up putting the products back on the shelves- they then would have been marched to the restroom and received thorough spankings.

And possibly again when we got home.

Over 100 Oberlin students occupied the Board of Trustees forum in Stevenson Dining Hall on Thursday, crowding along the walls and dispersing themselves throughout the space in order to ensure that their voices would be heard.

Many of the students who spoke at the forum demanded the Board take accountability for what they viewed to be the Boards apathetic approach, as well as for the racist microaggressions that some used in their responses.

Hands up, several students of color shouted when they heard language they identified as violent or oppressive. Dont shoot, the rest of the demonstrators yelled back.

Other students passed out a list of demands to the trustees. The demands called for divestment from companies that profit from Israels occupation of Palestine, creation of a scholarship program for undocumented students, a ban on fracking on College-owned property and the official formation of an Asian-American studies minor.

Once I was walking down a street in Berkeley when an oncoming kid (ca. 10-12) playing with a stalk of a rubber plant (I think; something flexible, like a piece of rubber hose) hitting things, just as he got next to me, suddenly hit me right across the groin with the damned thing.

I doubled up in pain, then grabbed the kid and lifted him off the ground, shook him (restraining the powerful urge to smack him), then put him back down and walked off.

The kid's reaction? Fear? No. Embarrassment? No. Contrition? Hell no. Astonishment. He couldn't have looked more astonished if I'd unzipped my jacket and produced another head.

I was probably 20 yards away before he recovered from his astonishment, and then called me every name in the book at the top of his lungs.

At the linked URL, I can see the Tweet, but not embedded her (or any other non-Twitter page).

I have NEVER been able to see embedded tweets. It was not until 5 minutes ago that I realized to my horror that other people CAN se embedded tweets. I guess I've been missing half of the Internet.

348 He talked to Emily Renda.
Renda was the link between Erdely and Jackie.

Rolling Stone Source Says Reporter Misrepresented Another Part Of Article
Daily Caller http://tinyurl.com/mzojc7w

Renda, who brought Jackie’s story to Erdely’s attention, says that whereas she was “shoved around” by a couple of guys who she says were frustrated by an op-ed she wrote about her own sexual assault, Jackie reported her bar attack before she began speaking out openly on campus about her alleged gang-rape at the Phi Kappa Psi house.

Renda said that Jackie faced “retaliatory harassment” for her claims that she was gang-raped, not because she was giving sexual assault awareness presentations on campus.

The bottle attack on Jackie has never been independently confirmed and Renda declined to speculate if it was accurate.

As we explained to our professor, who was appalled that we were unwilling to work extra hours and what did we think being a lawyer was like, we were taking the last chance to be drunk by noon on Friday without it reflecting poorly on our job performance.

He found our argument persuasive and agreed that we could work on the project at the one local bar.

390 Out here in the SF Bay Area, elite liberal yuppie parents are absolutely squirmingly desperate to find ways to distinguish their brats at university application time.

The pervasive stench of feces, urine and vomit? HIGHLY conducive to said state of awareness.

Streets and sidewalks strewn with unconscious bodies, piles of ratty clothing, greasy fast food trash, broken liquor bottles, and used syringes? You'll be aware of all that for sure.

Having someone come up and scream incoherent schizophrenic word salad in your face from three inches away, or "begging" for money in words and tones strongly reminiscent of actual robbery? Also guaranteed to raise your awareness.

No, because how would twitter know? For some reason that script is failing. If you're 1000% sure that you don't have JavaScript blocked/turned off then there's something else.

Are you at work and twitter (but not ace) is blocked? That might do it. If your setup is old enough (I know people still using IE 5 and IE 6) that might do it, too. But at this point I'm throwing out random ideas.

No, I don't see the tweets at Twitchy, usually. I've always wondered why it is such a popular site, since it's almost unusable -- have to click on each "embedded tweet" to see what it actually looks like on twitter itself (the tweets ARE visisble on any page with a Twitter URL, but not only any on-twitter page).

I rarely ever go to Twitchy because it makes no sense to me -- takes an incredible amount of effort to even read a post, because every other line is a tweet -- that is composed if noting but a url linking to what the tweet says.

I'm kind of in shock here.

497 That's what nursing homes are for. Special snowflake suddenly forgets that her two mommies exist when they start mumbling and drooling in their senility.

And then sues the nursing home into non-existence after ignoring her mothers for ten years when she belatedly discovers that the nursing home has been neglecting her surviving mother.
Posted by: junior at December 16, 2014 03:39 PM (UWFpX)

---------------------------------------

Hell, there's nothing wrong with putting someone in a nursing home if you've tried to keep them at home first or your extended family's no help. Where raising a child properly comes in is the part where he quits his job, shops around for the best one, gets on a waiting list, and does home care for months until a spot in a decent place opens up. That requires self-sacrifice and grit. If you don't teach your kid those two, you'll end up in a nursing home that looks like the hospital from the movie Jacob's Ladder.

And it all begins with: "I want a cookie!" "No."

Well, it at least passes the "I can see that..." test.

As for after-school jobs. I think it's nearing child abuse (or at least neglect) for your kid *not* to have an after school job, at least part of the time.

I worked at a pizza joint right after I got my driver's license (I had to be able to drive myself back and forth). Yep. It's liberal bullshit. The driver is that they don't want universities to consider just grades and SAT scores - i.e., indicators of being able to handle college work - because then the entering class would be lily white, and they know it.

They need to find an excuse to drum up some bruthas, who don't have a dog's chance of getting in otherwise. To address that problem they come up with this "community service" bullshit because it's totally subjective, and therefore gives the admissions offices a free hand.
So now when Antoine's application hits their desk they can ignore the 400 SAT score and admit him because he was the leader of an "inner city youth group," i.e., a gang.

My parents have only paid for 2 parts of my degree.

First they kept the loans I took out to live on campus my first year. I was leaning towards commuting, but was convinced otherwise.
We all agree that was a gigantic mistake and we still aren't sure who was most at fault, so they let it slide.

I've paid for everything else except some out of pocket money the last 2 semesters. They were paying my sister's sorority fees and though it would be "fair" to pay the last bit of my tuition. (Which was less than a grand at that point out of pocket.)

I wasn't going to complain.

My tuition was low due to an after school job I had. I ran the clock for Freshman and JV football games in high school. Mostly because it was easy and I enjoyed the extra spending money. And it didn't interfere with my weekend job.

My High School president used to check on the games, thought I was a good guy, wrote a letter on my behalf to my university. Money rained down, life was good.

588 Actually, Safari has always been the testbed for the latest Webkit, and Safari 8 (in OS X 10.10/iOS 8 ) is *really* good at Javascript - faster by an order of magnitude over Chrome and Firefox.

I don't doubt that: webkit has come a long way in the last 3 years; but if zombie is running an old version of safari built on an old version of webkit the js performance is going to be quite a bit less than adequate.

I have webkit 1.8.3 here, & while it has a decent js engine, twitter is a massive, steaming, memory-hungry pile of crap. I mean, so much so that for a while I just used a text-based perl client to do the twitter thang. Painful, but doesn't try to malloc all the ram & swap on my machine.

Bingo bango. Better living through chemistry.

As I said, I do feel some sympathy for these children, and they are children. You have to be taught how to be an adult and you have to be taught how to handle adversity. These kids are not being taught that and it's leading to terrible outcomes for the kids.

If you refuse to teach people to swim and, in fact, you take away all the life preservers and tell them that don't worry, the water won't hurt them if they fall in and then you toss them into the deep end and walk away? Yeah, it's not entirely their fault when they drown.

725 There is one scene in Episode 1 where Tricia introduces to her bed partner a very hot blond nymph who only had Han Solo's leather vest covering her top...

As for the plot twist, typical government and the Tuskegee Syphilis study.

Amazing the ship was launched 50 years ago. But they have nitrile gloves and one of the crew duty uniforms, save the shoulder boards, are current USAF service dress.

729 Ascension has so many things wrong with it.

"Oh Captain! Why haven't you and your hot wife produced any kids? We need to keep our population stable." After they spend a whole scene of them talking about how perfect a genetic match they are.
Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at December 16, 2014 04:52 PM (CpRK

Actually, that was addressed with the you know we can't even have a child without someone dying line.

It's infuriating because it's a very interesting idea and the acting is at least decent. That being said, why fall back on the upstairs/downstairs dynamic particularly when there is care to show that the group is interracial. It makes no sense even within the context of the rules of the universe. Also the ship is 50 years old and no one knew about the one hatch in the one place? When kids go there all the time? And it's not exactly well hidden?

Plus the use of Tricia Helfer is lazy lazy lazy. No shit she's the scheming seductress. It's like casting Kevin Spacey in the new Call of Duty and expecting it to be a surprise he's a megalomaniac sociopath. Oh my stars and garters knock me over with a feather, it can't be.

Posted by: alexthechick - The Specialest Snowflake of all at December 16, 2014 05:00 PM (mf5HN)

730 The gravity is easy to explain. Ascension's decks are perpendicular to the axis of thrust. As long as the engines are thrusting they can generate what feels like gravity.

But the ship is getting close to turn over time.

What does this mean? Soon the ship will have to flip around its axis of travel and start thrusting to decelerate. Or they will be traveling too fast to enter the new star system.

So for awhile they will be weightless. And then they will be walking on the ceilings.

763 Following the model set at several law schools, students at Oberlin College are pleading for leniency during final exams and the final grading period this fall semester in light of the grand jury decisions in the Michael Brown and Eric Garner cases and the shooting of Tamir Rice.

A petition has been circling around the school community President Marvin Krislov to suspend the standard grading system because students of color, especially black students, are at risk of failing.

"I would really like to see the normal grading system suspended for this semester and replaced with a no-fail mercy period. Administrators should require professors to exercise complete flexibility in what students are saying they can produce academically. Require that every professor listen to what their students are saying and if that means rather than writing a paper students instead meet with their professor to simply discuss in groups their paper topics or if tests are taken collectively with professors there are ways to make sure we are learning what we are supposed to be learning in ways that are not so taxing in times like this," the petition reads.

"Students in this moment should have complete access to alternative modes of learning while we process what's happening. Basically, no student especially black students and students of color should be failing a class this semester. A 'C' should be the lowest grade students can receive this semester. Professors should be required to work with students, who would otherwise be at risk of failing, to create alternate means of accessing knowledge."

The petition has garnered more than 1,300 signatures, according to The Oberlin Review.
