Welcome To 2016: Jeb Bush Officially Announces He's Running (Sort Of)

Oh yeah, Bush 2016 is real and it's going to be spectacular!

Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah!

Like many of you, our family was blessed with the opportunity to gather together over the recent Thanksgiving holiday.

Columba and I are so proud of the wonderful adults our children have become, and we loved spending time with our three precious grandchildren.

We shared good food and watched a whole lotof football.

We also talked about the future of our nation. As a result of these conversations and thoughtful consideration of the kind of strong leadership I think America needs, I have decided to actively explore the possibility of running for President of the United States.

In January, I also plan to establish a Leadership PAC that will help me facilitate conversations with citizens across America to discuss the most critical challenges facing our exceptional nation. The PAC’s purpose will be to support leaders, ideas and policies that will expand opportunity and prosperity for all Americans.

In the coming months, I hope to visit with many of you and have a conversation about restoring the promise of America.

Best wishes to you and your families for a happy holiday season. I’ll be in touch soon.

Finally! The party that has nominated George H.W. Bush, Bob Dole, George W. Bush, John McCain and Mitt Romney will have the White Knight moderate it needs to wrest control of the party away from those dirty conservatives.

Why is Jeb doing this so early?

I'm guessing because the Romney 2016 thing was getting real. All the talk from Team Mitt about how, "the field wasn't that great and he as much as he didn't want to run again gosh darn it, his duty to party and country might force him to" was probably getting donors all hot and bothered. Sometimes in politics momentum starts and self-fulfilling prophecies of inevitability are created. Jeb wanted to blunt that before it got going to strongly.

Well the Great White Moderate Whale has just thrown his hat in the ring. Now donors who want to unite behind someone are going to have to start picking sides. In just a few weeks there will be an address to which they can send checks. Attendance will be taken, so take the holidays to decide if you're on the Bush bandwagon or not.

It'll be interesting to see who else this forces into the same move. If you're in the establishment bracket of the GOP primary (hello Chris Christie and yes you Mitt Romney) Bush just fired the starter's pistol. Either you get in now or you risk being left behind.

While we enjoy this moment of pure glee at an amnesty loving, Common Core front runner for the GOP nomination, let us have a moment of silence of Rubio 2016. Bush's entry ends any hope Rubio had this cycle. They are personally close and share too much of the same donor base.

Excuse me while I go buy some popcorn futures. Demand is about to skyrocket.

7 That's a twofer.

With regards to Jeb '16: I note, with some amusement, that the "shut up and vote the party" talk had begun before Jeb announced.

Really and truly, absolutely no time wasted in castigating and demonizing the "base" of the Republican Party - or, rather, their fringe voting bloc.

The Pubbies really are just Dem Lite. This is immaterial to me personally, as I will never vote R again, but it will be interesting to see how the conservative crowd reacts should senor Bush actually get somewhere with this hopefully ill-fated campaign of his.

49 The GOP ruling class looks at Jeb and sees a Romney who speaks fluent Spanish and has a Mexican wife.

They think he can take 40%+ of the hispanic vote and squeak out 50.1% in the general.

And they might be right. If Dems run Injun Liz I think Jeb can beat her.

If think Hillary will crush him though and go populist against Wall Street Republicans and win the white working class vote in the midwest.

50 Now the ball is in the court of the other potential candidates. I think Jeb announced too early, I figured it would at least be the new year before the carnival started. Not every candidate, especially ones with current day jobs, can run for two years straight. But Jeb may force their hands, especially if he uses his "listening tour" to make stump speeches, fine tune his campaign, the others can't afford to fall too far behind. A lot of closed door meetings this week.

Just a couple of items.

Romneycare! God how soon we forget.

Romney became allegedly pro-life in about 2004 as a 50+ man. Before that he was solidly "pro-choice", He changed (allegedly) because he was giving up Mass. politics for national GOP politics and needed to be pro-life. How many people since Roe change their views in middle age?

My order of preference for 2016 is

1) Rand Paul (warts and all)
2) Scott Walker
3) Ted Cruz
4) Marco Rubio

That would all change though if New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez through her hat in the ring. She would destroy Hillary in my humble opinion.

Posted by: McAdams at December 16, 2014 10:39 AM (6wBEX)

96 It is frankly stupid to call Jeb a "moderate". He would be the most conservative president since Coolidge. Look at his record in Florida for goodness sake.

Jeb commits two heresies. Common Core and immigration.

Not 1 in 100 people had ever heard of Common Core a year ago let alone had a view on it. Now, unless you are against it, you are not a True Conservative©. You know who else hates Common Core? Teacher unions, Think about that.

The other heresy is of course immigration. Jebs's views are about the same as Reagan's. I gues Ron was not a True Conservative© either.

98 The Democrats go ever more Left.

Hillary -- the Alinskyite who tried to nationalize healthcare in the 90s -- is the moderate "right-wing" Democrat now. Proud socialist Injun Liz is who Dems really want to be Prez.

Meanwhile Repubs go ever more to the Left, ever more moderate.

Both parties shifting heavily to the Left.

Think about that.

The other heresy is of course immigration.
Jebs's views are about the same as Reagan's. I gues Ron was not a True
Conservative either.

Oh, I'm bored and on hold so I'll bite.

So, just because teachers unions are against something, I can't be against it too? That's stupid. I've seen a lot of teachers oppose CC, not so much the unions, but even if they do, well, they're right.

I'll stipulate your "just like Reagan" argument for the purpose of this post. So? It's 2015, not 1986. The way the donks lied to Reagan about immigration, and the fallout from their betrayal is one of the prime reasons having a stance on immigration "just like Reagan" is sheer lunacy today.

That's two strikes. One more and you're out.

I've said it before, but if I was in the Bush family, my advice would have been for Jeb not to run to protect the family dynasty for George P. in 15-25 years. If Jeb runs and wins, great chance he will be a one-term president and after 3 Bush's hard to see a 4th. If he runs and loses, he adds more losing stain to the Bush name and potentially saddles his son with baggage. No upside to George P. IMO. Some father.

213 It's the way Jeb goes about immigration that pisses me off.

I've known "rock ribbed" conservatives that aren't "border hawks" but Jeb would have you believe amnesty is the most important policy objective on Earth and that any conservative that opposes it is just a giant racist. And he has no problem trumpeting this every time you get a microphone in front of him.

This meme that Romney lost because he was not for amnesty are absurd and have been thoroughly debunked. Latinos didn't hand Obama the election, Sean Trende had a great analysis that showed had Romney won 70% of the Latino vote, he still would have come up short. But 2-3% more of the white vote and he would have won.

Look at Republicans like McCain, the ultimate open borders Republican that bent over backwards to get an amnesty bill. Latinos did not reward McCain at the ballot box when he ran for President. It's an Establishment fantasy that gets repeated over and over.

Lets have this out once and for all. I think we'd win. Just need to lock Ron away in a cave for a few years. Then he needs to start governing from the Constitution as written and start putting real freedom at the front of every decision he makes.

Also, scrap CommieCorp and start teaching the Three R's, then start lining up small government experts for his Cabinet. Then he needs to start shuttering Fedzilla's out-of-control unnecessary departments until we get to a 1960's-sized government again. He can begin by closing every department that has a SWAT team.

If he does that, then I'll vote for him.

268 I really don't think the "donor" class matters as much as people think anymore.

Yes, Jeb Bush will have an impressive Rolodex to tap, but the rules of campaign have really changed. Big media buys are not nearly as important as they once were.

Look at Rick Perry, he came in the primary raising a bazillion dollars overnight, lead the primary polls, and was arguably the most powerful and successful elected Republican in the country but he crashed and burned very quickly. He ended up getting beat by the likes of Michelle Bachman.

Someone like a Rand Paul or Ted Cruz would have a small donor class that would overwhelm a Jeb Rolodex in my opinion. It would be similar to what we saw with Obama in 2008 where the average donation may be $20 but it really adds up.

The whole reason Jeb's out there is to try and push Amnesty as the one and only choice-

I think it's a bit of a Kamikaze run on his part. Not to be elected - just to plant the flag for others to pick up on keeping amnesty and obamacare and common core.

- this would harsh that narrative if Cruz suddenly started receiving tons o'cash to run.

That's fine, but he has shown he is able to sell the more palatable ideas of his father (of which there are many, clouded by some big time unpalatable ones) package them up with a pretty bow and make them seem reasonable. One of his fathers many flaws (if you can call it that) was he was a terrible politician, my way or the highway, one note all the time, ask him a softball question about austrian economics and he'll start in on how we are an empire, and we should sop all foreign entaglements.

Rand doesn't have that problem, and I think he's shown his willingness to compromise where is reasonable and needed.

I will take the spawn of the crazy old guy over some bush/christie/romney amalgum that will end up in failure to one of any number of democrats that should absolutely get crushed.

I'd like to see a libertarian style republican get a legitimate shot. Rand seems to be the best chance of that.

If you ask me who would I trust that would abide by their constitutional limits of aurhotity in light of what we have seen the last 6 years, I would say two men, Ted Cruz and Rand Paul. I am afraid that Cruz has sort of become a joke in LIV circles (he's a rockstar for us, on this I agree), but the filibuster I think soiled his image for the rank and file vote every 4 years type. He, I think would suffer from the same problems a Palin candidacy would, they are cartoon characters now.

319 There are things I don't like about Rand, but I think the good overwhelms the bad and I think the GOP needs a new coalition and I see Rand Paul being the one that can put that together.

Rand Paul is more dovish than I would like, but I absolutely loathe the super hawk neocon types like McCain and Graham that want to invade very hot spot in the Middle East.

Regarding ISIS, I think they should be taken out but I'm also sane enough to realize that the Middle East is going to have crazy groups cutting people's head off until the end of time.

Posted by: McAdams at December 16, 2014 11:28 AM (6wBEX)

320 It's really hard to say which RINO I would prefer, but between Romney and Bush I guess Bush. Bush doesn't have that really weird behavior where he will stalwartly preen about his principle on something and then as soon as it's politically convenient say the exact opposite thing. All politicians flip flop and lie and think the voters are stupid dupes, but Romney takes it to a peculiar level. The recent Amnesty demands, after the way he presented himself in 2012, are a good example, but he's been like this on virtually every thing he's ever stood for, which makes him come across as dangerously desperate.

Bush is just another run of the mill RINO.

Like what Shatterhand is saying, my hope is that they both run and damage eachother the way Romney's hyperfunded campaign damaged all the conservatives in 2012, but I think they are too politically savvy to do that. Romney's campaign was harsh towards the other candidates, ultimately running on an argument of 'I made them unelectable so elect the electable one' why anyone thought electable meant Romney is completely beyond me. If we nominate either of these guys of course they will lose the general.

It's just that they settled on making Cruz into snidely whiplash, and it's a done deal now, so anything he does gets heightened scrutiny. The filibuster was a mistake in my mind since it was all prearranged with Harry Reid and made him look silly in some ways. The usual media types are latching on to that.

Just my two cents, I like Cruz a lot, but I don't think he'd get very far at this point. Frankly I'd like both him and Paul to chill out for a few years. We've been complaining for years about a junior senator with no experience as president, then we go nominate one.

My point with Paul is merely, if the choice is one of these half baked moderate stooges, or him, I'd like to see him take a crack at it in the general election.

Paul vs. Warren, should be a nixonian/reagan style bloodbath of red states. I feel like with a centrist squish we may well lose, even though I think she's unelectable, we'd find a way to screw it up.

I've always thought that a truly conservative candidate could actually appeal to the center by stressing the integrity angle. "We don't have to agree on every issue, but you know my principles, you know I'll stick to those principles, so there are no surprises." For almost every candidate, in every election on either side of the spectrum, the main question is always "can I believe what this asshole is telling me, or are they blowing smoke up my butt to get my vote?"

Of course, we have no idea whether integrity will actually work, because almost no politician in US history has ever really tried it.

Could you imagine what would have happened to Harry Reid's power if a Sarah had been VP????

With Reid's obstruction of votes, she would have walked into the Senate and forced votes.... or a Constitutional crises...

Unless she was the tie-casting vote, I don't think she would have had much influence at all in the Senate.

Romney ran a vicious nomination campaign in 2008 and 2012. That might be forgivable if he had been equally vicious when he ran against Obama in 2012 but when he ran against a Democrat, suddenly he was a squishy milqtoast. Not to mention that Romney demonstrated that his vaunted competence was a myth by the spectacularly incompetent Orca disaster.

Why anybody thinks that pile of fail deserves yet another chance is a mystery to me.

The only reason to vote for a RINO in general is foreign policy. Our allies, especially Israel, have been weakened and our enemies emboldened. Even RINO's don't hate America. That said, Iran should've been taken down a long time ago and no party is innocent on that score.

From the domestic side, the sad hard reality is that it makes no difference who controls the strings in DC since the GOP-e is more than happy to just profit from the destruction wrought by the Democrats.

He voted for Obama, as did his entire extended family, but is totally disgusted with Obama and also the whole dem party. He asked about Ben Carson! I know he would never vote for another Bush, but if there was a strong candidate I bet he and many others like him would vote for that candidate. The last election did not have the candidates that this nomination should have. And one who was just not ready for prime time for whatever reason (Perry) who should be much better if he runs this time. So difficult to compare last election to this one.

I dismiss that a hard fought primary that takes money hurts you in a general from a money perspective. I think it helps you because you have been battle tested.

Looking forward, let's assume it's a moderate against Hill or the Squaw Heiress.

If the moderate R gets elected, the coat tails will add a bit more to the R majority.

What's a moderate R president going to do, veto what a somewhat conservative Congress passes?

Look around. The world is falling apart and we are worrying about Common Core? It's probably the least of the problems in education.

Worry over illegals? Too late, that war was lost long ago. Just be glad almost none of them are Muslims.

I'm voting for fiscal sanity and a strong defense posture.

Assuming the R candidate displays at least a passing interest in such things. If not, the work continues at levels of govt closer to the people.

What else is there to do? I've already got my next two escape hatches ready if it all falls apart.

I'd be fine with Jeb if his last name Smith.

Posted by: bour3 at December 16, 2014 03:13 PM (5x3+2)

476 There are a handful of hardened reflexive Romney Defense Force types in the thread as usual, but in this case I find them more perplexing than usual.

Jeb and Mitt are both 'moderates', albeit I realize Mitt describes himself as progressive and severely conservative depending on the audience. I guess that translates to confused moderate. They were both governors, but Mitt's tenure was a disaster and he was very unpopular by the time his single term finally ended, whereas Jeb was a very successful governor. Both are in favor of amnesty, but Mitt was stalwartly opposed a two years ago (in other words, both are wrong, but at least one didn't lie about his views).

And then there's the Gruber thing. Obama's use of this weasel Gruber says so much about his dishonest character and lack of respect for our voters. But he got Gruber from Romney, who also praised the guy warmly. If you've thought Gruber says something about Obama's administration, you would be intellectually dishonest not to note that the same is true for Mitt.

Jeb campaigns pretty well. Romney's 2012 campaign was run ineptly, to say the least. It was the only recent test of Romney's management under pressure since he began his career of losing elections 22 years ago.

So I hope Romney's fans reconsider Jeb. He's still a RINO, but a less ridiculous one.

Posted by: Dustin at December 16, 2014 03:59 PM (a7sQX)

477 The more RINOs we get in the primary, the more split the RINO vote with be, and the more chance we have of getting someone who doesn't completely suck (provided that we can get behind one good candidate quickly). I welcome the news.
