BREAKING: Hostage Situation In Sydney, Australia

Lot of confusing reports but there are multiple people (reports say there are up to 50 but no one really knows) being held in a coffee shop in Sydney. There are reports of multiple gunmen but we know how those things go.

The scary part of this is the hostage taker(s) has had some of the hostages hold up a black Islamist flag.

Updated: Australian TV saying the writing on the flag is the "Shahada"...one of the pillars of Islam: "There is no god but the God, Muhammad is the messenger of the God." So yeah....Methodists.

sydneyflag.JPG

Remember it's Monday morning there and this is apparently a busy part of downtown Sydney.

Livestream of Australian TV.

Added (7:55 EST):

NSW Police + AFP are raiding several homes in Lakemba right now. More #martinplacesiege #sydneysiege #sydneycafesiege (@PMOnAir)

what would Australia do. A frank discussion on Islam? Start moving the

57 The writing was on the wall for Australia a few years back.

They lost their minds and handed out citizenship to a bunch of Lebanese Muslim "refugees".

Who repaid the Aussies' hospitality in the typical muzzie manner. With a boom in welfare dependence, and a wave of criminal violence to include gang rapes of kuffar Australian women.

There were a bunch of the Lebanese gathered on a beach in Sydney on a sunny weekend afternoon. Beaches there are quite popular and get quite crowded. Occasional accidental incursions happen. Australians normally take this in stride. No worries, mate.

So when a ball from a game of beach volleyball landed amidst the Lebanese, the Aussies responsible went over and apologized. Not good enough. The Muslims immediately started a FREAKING KNIFE FIGHT right there on the beach, which ended up with several people in the hospital in serious condition.

When a particular group of people can't get along peaceably _anywhere_ in the entire world, including in one of the calmest and most hospitable places you can find, it's a sign that maybe the rest of us should stop trying to make them welcome, and start working to keep them the heck away from ourselves, for our own safety.

Hostages are being forced to hold an Islamic flag against the window of the Lindt Chocolat Cafe in Martin Place after at least one gunman stormed the premises.

Terrified customers in the cafe could be seen holding an Islamic flag - which is black with white writing on it - up against the glass window. The flag appears to be a Shahada flag, not an Islamic State flag, but is associated with Islamist and jihadist movements.

Short of utter annihilation of whole populations, I'm not sure what you can do to people like this, since they value nothing more than torture and murder.

It bears remembering, though, that this could be a homegrown wannabe jihadi Aussie for all we know.

He says that younger Britons who have matured in the years since handguns were all confiscated by the UK government are absolutely irrationally terrified of the things, and attribute supernatural powers of evil to them. All it would take would be for a perp to briefly display a gun, he said, and they'd instantly comply with whatever was demanded.

I'd be surprised if it worked any differently Down Under.

Especially among affluent urbanites in Sydney, who are a whole world removed from the sorts of tough working-class rural Australians who live and work on remote sheep stations or down mines.

It's a very nice location, with lots of 19th century sandstone buildings (used to be the banking hub of Sydney) so it's popular with tourists.

So you can imagine that a terrorist incident in Martin Place just before Christmas is going to be causing a fair amount of chaos.

01.35 Our man in Sydney, Jonathan Pearlman, says the siege comes months after Australia's biggest ever counter-terrorism raids and follows repeated warnings by ASIO, the domestic spy agency, of the growing threat of a homegrown domestic attack.

"Much of the concern has focused on disaffected Muslim youths in the outer suburbs of Sydney and other cities. About 90 Australians have travelled to Iraq and Syria to fight with Isil and other extremist groups, with about 20 known to have died."

Just two weeks ago, the government passed new security laws, including the declaration of "no go zones" in Syria. Any Australian who travels to the zones could face 10 years in jail.

The raids in September apparently thwarted a plot to conduct public beheadings on the streets of Sydney.

Australia has about 500,000 Muslims, with large populations in Sydney and Melbourne.

Political correctness and the usually accompaniment of socialism seems to require a suspension of all logic and semblance of disbelief. It boggles my mind how the state once infected by this crap loses its ability to use power to defend the citizenry will becoming quite apt and proficient at using that power AGAINST the citizenry.

Yeah, and I'm pretty sure it's also the exact sentence you need to say to declare yourself a Muslim. So one reasonable translation would be "I, the hostage-taking asshole, am a Muslim, and that is the most important thing you need to know about me, so that's why I brought a flag saying that."

384 www.smh.com.au -- Sydney Morning Herald

Professor Lewis said the siege may have been plotted and carried out by as few as two or three people and possibly triggered by Monday morning's terror raids in Sydney.

"It's certainly an interesting coincidence that there was terrorism raid this morning and now this action is taking place," he said.

"What's happened in the last couple of months is that Islamic State has sent its messages around to supporters and potential supporters around the world and asked them to act - to do things that they have been planning or thinking about doing...

"It is a time when Islamic State is encouraging these kinds of more random approaches to action."

It is not yet clear whether the gunman, or gunmen, are associated in any way with Islamic State or any other proscribed extremist group.

Professor Lewis said extremists also used acts of terror to promote their cause and demonstrate their power to potential supporters.

"They want to threaten the people who they regard as their enemies - that is the people of Australia and the government of Australia - but also to promote and attract supporters...or potential supporters," he said.

In September, the government raised Australia's terror threat from medium to high, meaning an attack on home soil was considered "likely".

389 Candy stores and chocolate shops used to be very common in small towns all over the US. In Ohio last century, a surprisingly large number of excellent candy/chocolate stores were owned by Greek immigrants. (Hence a candy store named Nectar in a town near here.) They were also excellent small businesses for women who were good candy/chocolate makers, hence the large number of stores with women's names.

Esther Price chocolates are good stuff, too. Unfortunately most of the stores are closed, but you can buy them at the grocery store or go to the factory store and get a better selection.
