Here's a Surprise: Republican Congressman Claims the Republican Leadership Lied to Him To Get His Vote for the Cromnibus

I know, I know. I just rocked your world.

Your world is spinning. You just can't believe it.

Rep. Marlin Stutzman (R-IN) says that House GOP leadership--he hasn't identified anyone in particular--duped him into switching his vote on the procedural measure that set up the 1,774-page, $1.1 trillion cromnibus spending bill backed by House Speaker John Boehner and President Barack Obama to pass.

...

Stutzman says he switched his vote on the floor because House GOP leadership--again, he doesn't name anyone: whether it was Boehner himself, Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Majority Whip Steve Scalise or an aide--promised him that if the rule passed, the cromnibus would be replaced by a short-term spending measure. This Continuing Resolution (CR) would last until early next year when the newly elected GOP majority in the Senate takes over.

"Earlier today, I supported the Rule because I was informed by Leadership that the CROmnibus was dead and a short term CR would take its place," Stutzman said in the statement. "I was very surprised and even more disappointed to see the CROmnibus back on the floor. The American people deserve better."

Some people are claiming this is all false-- but interestingly, they claim it's false that John Boehner told Stutzman this. It's left open whether anyone else might have tod Stutzman this tall tale.

Nonetheless, other highly-connected Capitol Hill sources who wished to remain anonymous say there is an element of truth to what Stutzman is saying...

"I heard about the promise from several sources, and Stutzman wasn't the only one to whom it was made. He was just the only one who bought it," said one highly-connected Capitol Hill source.

I do think conservatives should seriously consider my suggestion that we pick 10 or 12 (I'm upping the number) Republican Congressmen and absolutely tank them in 2016. First, they get a primary, and if the primary fails to dislodge them, we give the seat to the Democrats. We actively vote for the Democrat. Whatever happens, we retire their asses.

37 Do you really think you're going to beat Boehner's political organization in a primary? In a primary you need to win a majority of Republican votes. In the general you only need to get 20% or so of Republicans to switch one time (I haven't looked up his margin of victory yet, but plan do do so for my favorite targets this weekend).

I think Cantor was a lucky win in this regard. I wouldn't use it as a template.

The leadership gets the most money and resources to win their elections which are usually in solid red areas.

Risk / reward for going after the leadership looks dicey at best.

I'd suggest going after the RINO a-holes who have committee chairs and usually pipe up in favor of whatever shitty bills the GOPe has floated. Remove the leaders' support and you give the renegades more power.

If you want to go to the glitzy insider DC cocktail parties, you better be the Speaker or the majority/minority leader, because if you aren't, you won't get invited to the tony cocktail parties.

And remember, it's not always the congresscritter that wants to go to these parties, it's the spouse. The spouse wants a social life, and if the congresscritter has to move left to ensure that social life, so be it.

No, attack the supports, the back bench RINOs who vote for this defective leadership. Come up with a catchy label to slap on em for doing some tangible thing and have a big Internet ballot to pick the victims. Make sure it is splashy. Then glom on em something horrible, primary and general. Splashy on the Internet, lots of ridicule (remember your Alinsky, ridicule is potent and hard to defend against) and fun for our team, raise money etc.

Focus national attention on a couple of back benchers and it should be possible to actually knock off a couple.

Third party typically splits the vote thus leaving open the possibility of a GOP win, but the point is to vote the R rascals out, allow a newer set of D rascals in, pray that you find an honest R candidate for the next cycle, and then vote the new D rascals out in the subsequent cycle.

One flaw with this that I see is that the D machine is so much better organized at cheating that once even an obviously incompetent idiot D gets in office, it may be impossible to dislodge them, especially with a million new "live" illegal voters plus all their dead relatives voting early and often.

And since the vote is secret (so far) there's no way for them to tell whether you're voting with the party you're registered as.

Some states allow cross over and some don't.

Some states allow the parties to make the rules and some the states make the rules.

YMMV

No way a Dem is going to win the district. With the recent re-alignment, it's as safe a Republican seat as there is.

The problem is that the Left wants it to burn. That is their ultimate plan: To destroy what we have so they can erect their little dystopia, which they have been planning for for over a century.

That rare combination of liberty and virtue that made America so great can not be created ex nihilo, especially from a country degenerated by the Left.

Interesting, but needs proof of concept. There's a history of a small percentage of Republican voters staying home when they don't like a candidate.

However, as much people complain, there hasn't been a successful concerted effort I know of to get Republicans to just stay home, much less vote for the Dems.

Beyond that, I believe what Ace is advocating is actively voting for Dem's in targeted districts, not your run of the mill primary battle. You only have to influence about 3-5% of pissed off enough voters in ripe districts in his scenario, rather than more than half of Republicans. After the fact, you'd have a tough time getting recognized as the reason for the defeat. It would be spun as a progressive renaissance, and Ace would hate that.

So if you won't vote libertarian, then you aren't on board, which is fine.

I get it. I like it as a thought experiment. I don't like it in practice. Yet. But I'm not rejecting it out of hand. If you take it seriously, you kinda have to most fast though. It wouldn't take a ton of money in the conventional sense. It would take extremely coordinated early organization, and some local people with some sway to get on board. The money would come from the Dem's once you got the spark started.

It's a bell that is not easily unrung for elections to come, if you actually went the lengths to make it work.

298 No No NO! Get rid of the Dems FIRST then clean out the REpublican tools. You have to maintain the ability to drive the legislative agenda and that means having a Republican majority if we are to get even the slightest thing done that we want. Sure, they will pull crap like this, but let's bide our time and focus on the Dems first. After that, yeah, chip away at one Republican at a time until the liberal Repubes are gone. People also need to get involved with the Republican party on the local and state level. The radicals took over the Democratic party, so the sane silent majority can certainly start taking over the REpublican party. They did it before when Reagan took office, and they can do it again. Let's not shoot ourselves in the foot here! I know everyone is ticked off, but let's prioritize here.

305 Anyway, my point behind the "Leo X" sock is just to say that the Church is more than the guy wearing Simon's fisherman flip-flops at any particular moment.

Remember, even that aforementioned Simon dropped the ball once or twice. Or thrice. (So I've read from the various Gospels anyway.)

The Church has almost two thousand years of tradition behind it, and an impressive array of philosophical work.

If there's a goof in charge of it now, who can't extemporaneously expound the doctrina fidei in compassion and erudition before a grieving child, that does suck; but the Church will survive it.

The Church survived the freakin' Cadaver Synod. It also survived Diocletian.

313 The pope is such an evil man. He dare he comfort a child upset that his pet is dead.

Yeah, I think it's kind of ridiculous to get upset over this.

For that matter, at least on the economic side of things, there's been a leftist streak running through the Church for decades if not centuries. Sure, they were against communism, but there was also a lot of skepticism of libertarian-level capitalism well before the '60s. How much this came up depended on the cleric involved. Since the Benedict focused on social issues and John Paul II was heavily anti-communist, people on the right in this country mostly ignored it, but even they made statements on economics that would sound like they were coming from a liberal.

I realize emphasizing charity, humility, and vows of poverty is different from the liberal view--that the state must take money away from you to support those things. Still, you can't seriously expect an institution that maintains the Franciscan Order and communal monasteries where there is very limited private property to be one of the main promoters of capitalism.

I do. And I do believe he would be susceptible to the same type of fate as Eric Cantor. You just need the candidate capable of it. His main primary opponent this last time was not that. And Boehner put in FAR FAR more effort in the primary than he ever has before, than he ever has for the general election, and he still took a 10% hit to his numbers than what he usually gets in a primary.

So a real candidate that can challenge him and call him out for the shit he's pulled, yeah they could have a shot.

328 To me that huge windfall for political parties is one of the most sickening parts of Cromnibus. An individual can now donate over $700 K to a party. Wonder if it specifically names the Republican and Democrat parties, or if this holds for other parties also?
The Canadians have an interesting system that tries to provide transparency and also empower smaller parties. Part of it involves tax credits for donations to political parties, and there are dozens of parties getting the donations. Public funding is also allocated to parties by the number of votes they get.

pick 10 or 12 (I'm upping the number) Republican Congressmen and

primary fails to dislodge them, we give the seat to the Democrats. We
actively vote for the Democrat. Whatever happens, we retire their asses.

I agree wholeheartedly. We need to tell the GOP that giving the Democrats everything they want is the death of the GOP. If all we're going to get are Democrat laws, might as well vote for the Democrat.

Will the GOP learn anything? No. They've shown they are incapable of learning anything.

2014 was not the year that people voted for Republicans. The people were voting against the Democrats, and the Republicans just happened to be left over.

If you are in a R +4 district, which is safeish, then you can flip the race by convincing 2% of R's and independents to change their vote. By getting a switch of vote rather than deciding to sit it out or vote a token libertarian, your needed success rate is cut in half.

It's the kind of thing a smaller grassroots operation could do. It is easier in that sense than a primary battle. Where IMO the idea fails is that people will not agree on which 10,12, whatever races are in the playing field. You can get 60% to say their is a spending problem in government, but can't get to 45% on any particular item to cut when you get any demagoguery on any specifics. You get to a certain point, you also won't be able to coordinate and say it stops here in 2018, 2020, 2022. Meaning the more effective it is in the short term, the more detrimental if will be in the long run.

So it is an idea that sounds great, but is less fulfilling in practice. People close by might see what happens, but I don't share the opinion they would immediately come running back to us. They'd have the media apparatus behind them, and wait us out until we collapsed upon ourselves.

New Jersey had the lowest percentage of children with two or more traumas, at 16 percent, while Oklahoma had the highest, at 33 percent.

Here's a map showing the general ranking of the states:

... damn, they forgot to mention that living in New Jersey is one long, never-ending trauma. And look at the map, Illinois, the home of probably more gang killing than just about any where else in the country is also in ht "green" with it's never-ending story of trauma.

Look at the way they passed ObamaCare--and now look at what Dianne Feinstein is doing to the CIA operators.

It's gross. They had to sign non-disclosure statements to even SEE what they were being charged with--and then when one of the investigators tried to defend himself with a statement they redacted PSGES AND PAGES of his statement.

If you guys want to go back to the days of the Khobar Towers where it was found that the Iranians did that and we did not respond, the USS Cole and we did not respond the bombing of the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania and those were not treated as US sovereign territory and you want to--

"gift" either Hillary Clinton and/or Elizabeth Warren (gawd forbid) with being impeachment proof or without being able to overcome their vetoes...you better be willing to risk the long term fall out of that.

Anyways--I really doubt you can "appoint" some group of vaunted pundits to decide who the base should vote out.

All politics is local and the base isn't going to listen to some Beltway pundits telling them what to do nation wide.

377 But I gotta respect a pope who stands up to the French and the big Italian mafias families at the same time, to keep the Papacy independent.

Actually there's a theory floating around that this is why they're so infamous. Not that they weren't corrupt, backstabbing womanizers. However, a practice had arisen among a number of Italian families of benefiting themselves by producing a pope or two, enriching themselves through that position, and using that to prominence.

The Borgias were Spanish in origin. So, having outsiders come in and maneuver into their racket pissed the local nobility off. Most importantly, they didn't last in Italy, except, I think, for a small principality. So, while you had to accept the local noble families that had used the Church, no one was around to defend the Borgias if you vented them.

That doesn't change the fact they sucked, but probably means stories about them are exaggerated a little bit.

406 I've been actively promoting Ace's K-Street GOP retirement plan on FB with the Evil League of Evil, (Conservative-Libertarian Writer's Alliance, with Sarah Hoyt, Larry Correia, et al as members).

It's the only way I see to teach these people who only know how to compromise with Democrats that self-preservation matters.

407 I think we should concentrate on fewer people, perhaps with a higher profile. Does anybody know what margin John Boehner was elected by?

409 For what purpose? To "seize control" of the GOP? Meh. You cannot re-float the Titanic. The energy and expense would better go toward organizing and creating a "virtual political party" of libertarian/conservative bent. It's "brick and mortar" political houses which are passe.

410 310 "Rep. Marlin Stutzman (R-IN) says that House GOP leadership--he hasn't identified anyone in particular--duped him into switching his vote on the procedural measure..."

By any chance was this Rethuglican wearing purple cowboy boots?

411 Retire a Repub? Works for me!
First, they get a primary, and if the primary fails to dislodge them, we give the seat to the Democrats.
I don't really think it matters which dozen we pick, as long as we agree on the same dozen. Why don't you try to get some other conservative blogs to pick up on this so we can get some kind of widely distributed list to coalesce around?

If that doesn't happen, let's just all of us pledge to vote D if we have an R incumbent.

412 US Congress should be appropriately called the US House of Tricks and Lies.
