Hmm: German Prosecutor Says That Document Ordering the NSA to Tap Angela Merkel's Mobile Phone May be a (Russian?) Forgery

Ah, the despicable Soviet Empire.

Snowden allged we'd bugged German Chancellor Merkel's personal phone. This, of course, prompted a major diplomatic strain between the US and Germany.

But a German prosecutor says the key document establishing this bugging may be a fake.

Herald Range, who launched an investigation for the alleged spying by the NSA on Merkel, said that "there is no proof at the moment which could lead to charges that Chancellor Merkel's phone connection data was collected or her calls tapped".

"The document presented in public as proof of an actual tapping of the mobile phone is not an authentic surveillance order by the NSA. It does not come from the NSA database," he continued.

The story is actually more complicated that I've presented, and frankly I don't know if the IBD understands it fully, either, because they sure the hell haven't made it clear to me.

Apparently Snoweden claimed Merkel's phone was "bugged." But it's possible that the US merely looked at her contact information.

A document purports to order her phone to be bugged, but this document, I think, seems fake, and seems to have not actually have come from the NSA database.

I'm skeptical on whether he was working for the Russians beforehand. But once he ended up in the Russians' hands, you have to assume that everything he says and releases is either being given to him by the Russian government or released with their approval. At this point he should be viewed as completely compromised.

110 I'm skeptical on whether he was working for the Russians beforehand

I don't think it matters.

I think he saw some things that he didn't like, and decided to "strike against the man!"

The initial stuff (about the extent of the NSA domestic program) was enough to get him talked about, but he didn't get quite the response he'd hoped (he wanted to be a Hero of the People, and most people said- well, thanks for telling us. We'll send you cookies in Leavenworth.)

So then he had to go on the run and find someone to save him from the consequences of his actions. And to do *that* he had to be useful to that "someone."

117 Merkel believes, and often states she has a great, friendly and candid relationship with Putin.

1- I don't know whether she "believes" it or not.
2- Of course she states it, it would cause unnecessary friction if she didn't.
3- It's possible that she *does* have "a great friendly and candid relationship with Putin" on a personal level. But never forget that both are heads of State- which means however friendly they might be personally, they will occasionally be in conflict.

No, based on Merkel's past statements I am going to say she has been duped. In fact, I bet the Germans were probably handed direct evidence this was not the work of Americans in order to believe it.

Germany and Russia have shared geopolitical interests and are large trading partners. But Merkel has oft stated that she is the person who can deal with Putin and implies, she can persuade him because of their friendship.

The shine came off a bit after the Ukraine/Crimea invasion. In one interview, she even expressed her genuine shock that Putin could not be persuaded to back off.

144 How does one go about proving a record did not exist in a database?

Did the NSA provide snapshots of their database from the day the record was supposedly retrieved? I doubt that.

Even if they did provide a highly classified NSA database snapshot, how would one prove the information wasn't held by the NSA in a different database?

If the record is formatted differently somehow, that could be the result of a custom SQL query.

I really can't imagine how one would prove a record didn't come out of a particular database without granting extraordinary access to ALL of NSA's facilities.

171 Does anyone remember the Germans and Russians during the Oil for Food Programme?

There was this:

Alleged involvement of Russian intelligence

According to high-ranking Russian SVR defector Tretyakov, the Oil-for-Food program was sabotaged by an undercover Russian intelligence officer Alexander Kramar who worked in the UN Kramar set up the artificially low oil prices in 1998 to allow Saddam to use the oil vouchers as lucrative bribes.

[...]

Allegedly used to finance Al-Qaeda

The scandal engulfing the United Nations Procurement Department and the Oil-for-Food Programme allegedly involved Al-Qaeda finance operations. Fox News broke the story that Alexander Yakovlev, a Russian official in the UN Procurement Department, was involved; he later resigned and pled guilty to corruption charges. One link was to Ahmed Idris Nasreddin, a man designated as a terrorist financier by the US and the UN. The UN has named Nasreddin as a man "belonging to or affiliated with Al Qaeda."

Then there was this on the part of the Germans:

On 5 June 2007, the German chapter of the anti-corruption organisation Transparency International ( lodged a complaint with the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology against 57 German companies for allegedly paying $11.9 million in kickbacks in the United Nations' Oil for Food Programme in Iraq.

[...]

Ingersoll-Rand pays $2.5million in fines for kickbacks
In October 2007, the SEC brought a case against Ingersoll-Rand that three different subsidiaries paid kickbacks to Iraqi Government officials.

It's probably a mistake to underestimate-- the corruption of the UN, the "clean hands--and toga act" of the Germans, and the intelligence capabilities of the Russians.

The Russians might had influence over Snowden earlier than most people think.

218 I read, I think in a James Clavell novel, of an execution method used in Iran:

1. Parboil the victim;
2. Place victim in a burlap sack with 7 feral cats;
3. Close the sack tightly;
4. Beat the sack with sticks.

The victim's skin is already in extraordinary pain from the parboiling, of course. Beating the sack pisses off the cats whose claws pretty much rip every inch of skin off the victim.

So that, along with drawing and quartering, then burning the ashes and pissing on them to put out the fire when they are sufficiently burned, sounds about right for Snowden.

263 So now Snowden, because he chose to run from the consequences of stealing US data and holing up in a hostile country, is now a dupe - willing or unwilling - for a hostile intelligence service.

You'd expect Snowden, if he were a dedicated whistleblower, to protect his reputation for accuracy and honest disclosure like it was his own flesh. If you can't believe what he leaks, then why listen to anything he says? But you aren't hearing a blip from him. And that's because his flesh is owned by the KGB, because he chose to run and ran to countries hostile to the US.

264 Russian forgeries? Ya don't say! Ha! It's not like they haven't done this sort of thing before! As a matter of fact, the former USSR had a whole department devoted to it called Service A. All they did was put our forgeries throughout the world solely designed to make the U.S. look bad and disrupt and destroy relationships that we had with allies. They used to forge documents that were supposed to be from some senator or other US official, and they would give them to leaders of countries in South America, India, Middle East, etc.. Some of the horrible things that are said about the US today are rumors started by the Soviets. These guys were experts at smearing the US, and they even had stories planted in foreign press. It's amazing what they did and how people fell for it. The radical left fell for all of this garbage hook, line, and sinker. The radical lefty HATES this country, and they want to destroy it.
