Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Baseball Thread: The Winter Meetings/Start of The Off-season (BCochran)People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring. Hello again, Horde. So apparently you folks, or at least quite a few of you, enjoyed the World Series threads and asked for an occasional baseball thread through the offseason to keep us all up to date on what's happening. CBD was kind enough to encourage that idea. So here we go.... ![]() HOLY. CRAP. So...baseball went insane. The Winter Meetings looked like a Best Buy at 12:01am on Black Friday. The deals came fast, furious and never seemed to end. We saw huge names flying all over the place. And not just salary dumps like we're accustomed to. No, we saw teams trading value for value, star for star. There's no way I could recap everything without it looking like an Ace movie review on PEDs, so I'm just going to hit some of the high points as best I can. The very first big move of the offseason came from the Cubs. The Cubs enticed Joe Maddon to leave sunny Tampa Bay and make his home in the Windy City. Maddon is considered one of the very best managers in baseball and is a huge get for the Cubs. But that was just the start. The Cubs have focused mostly on pitching so far this offseason and started their player acquisitions with one of the biggest names out there, Jon Lester. They also added pitcher Jason Hammel and catcher Miguel Montero. The Southsiders decided that they wanted to play as well and signed pitcher Jeff Samardzija (which you college football fans may remember as a standout WR for the Fighting Irish not that long ago) as well as closer David Robertson and first baseman Adam LaRoche. The LaRoche signing raised a few eyebrows as the White Sox signed first baseman Jose Abreu just last season. I think it's clear that the biggest splash came from the Red Sox. The Sox signed Pablo Sandoval and Hanley Ramirez in quick succession. They then turned to pitching and signed Wade Miley, Rick Porcello and Justin Masterson. The Red Sox are undoubtedly stuffed to the gills with talent, but will it work? Questions are always raised about Sandoval's weight and Ramirez' attitude. Boston may be in the position of having acquired so much talent, that there aren't enough places in the lineup for all of them to be used effectively. With a locker room that many are already wondering if it can gel and work together, this could be a recipe for disaster. Or a dominant team. They'll be the most interesting team to watch in my opinion. Well, it's been right at a decade since the Marlins boug...won...their last Championship, so it must be time to open the checkbooks for a season again. The Marlins signed Giancarlo Stanton to an absolutely astronomical deal to start their off season. They continued their spending by acquiring lead off man Dee Gordon and pitchers Mat Latos and Dan Haren. The NL East is possibly the weakest division in baseball right now, so the Marlins stand a good chance of taking it this year. I'll lump the Tigers and the Padres together here as they both made similar moves. Each team went for quality over quantity. The Tigers brought in slugger Yoenis Cespedes and the Padres snagged Matt Kemp. With Cespedes being 29 and Kemp 30, both squads have the opportunity to get several high production years out of these guys. And then there are the Oakland Athletics. Billy Beane has made a name for himself, and not just inside the world of baseball, with his unorthodox style. This offseason, he's really got people scratching their heads. The A's have given up Josh Donaldson, Brandon Moss and Jeff Samardzija. Add to that the exit of free agents like Lester, Hammel, Jed Lowrie, Alberto Callaspo, Luke Gregerson and Jonny Gomes and, well, it looks like a disaster. The A's have acquired a boatload of younger talent (9 players between the ages of 18-26), as well as Billy Butler from the Royals. Whether or not Beane has lost his mind or is a genius will be one of the top stories of the next couple years. There are lots of free agents floating around out there that could make a huge impact, including James Shields, Melky Cabrera, Chase Headley, Jake Peavey, Edinson Volquez, Colby Rasmus, Kyle Kendrick, Francisco Rodriguez, Alex Rios, Jonny Gomes, Stephen Drew, Rickie Weeks and Nick Hundley. But one name is overshadowing them all, Max Scherzer. The 2013 AL Cy Young winner, in the past two years for the Tigers, has gone 39-8 with a 3.02 earned run average and tossed 434 2/3 innings. Those are incredible numbers, especially in the AL. Lester's deal with the Cubs was for 6 years and $155mil. I would expect Scherzer's ultimate deal to top that. Some rumors point to Scherzer's agent Scott Boras taking aim at landing the biggest deal ever inked for a pitcher. Clayton Kershaw currently holds that mark with a 7 year, $215mil deal. Nobody has any clue where Scherzer is going to land at the moment. There are many many many other trades and signings that have taken place, but these were the stories that seem to be heading up most of the offseason talk so far. If you're interested in every transaction made by clubs, from acquisitions to assignments to coaching moves, here you go: MLB Transactions As the offseason goes on, I'll try to make sure that I hit each MLB team at least once. Hope you folks enjoyed a little baseball talk during the dead period (which certainly hasn't been dead). If CBD approves and we don't get smacked by Ace or a Cob, I'll catch up with you guys a few more times over the next few months. Oh, and........ One of the things I like about baseball is that all the rules are fair, and developed organically. That is, many of the rules are in response to an actual situation that occurred for which there was no rule.
For instance, there once was no rule that the batter had to run to first after hitting the ball. A pro player refused to leave the batters box after a dink in the infield that would have been turned as a double play. Neither he nor the base runner at first left their respective spots and there was no rule 'forcing' the batter-runner to run if the batter wasn't coming to occupy first. I've been following this quite a lot on one of the SB Nation blogs for Mets fans. So many of them are screaming for Alderson to trade the farm for Troy Tulowitzsky, I don't want them trading their top prospects and a good young pitcher like Wheeler or deGrom for a guy who's great when he plays but doesn't play more than 100 games and is now 30.
The Marlins got hosed by the Dodgers on that Gordon trade. Dee had one hot half of a season after being a marginal player and is one dimensional. The Dodgers got their top MLB ready prospect and flipped him for Howie Kendrick, who can both hit and field. They dumped Matt Kemp's salary for a good young catcher who can hit and a high level prospect they flipped to the Phillies for Jimmy Rollins. Kershaw and Greinke will certainly appreciate the huge improvement in defense up the middle Everyone is wondering what the hell Beane is doing with the A's, but he always seems to come out on top when everyone thinks he's taking a wrecking ball to the roster Posted by: kbdabear at December 27, 2014 04:37 PM (GrXXa) 29

I propose a new rule:
Major League baseball teams can only have players who grew up in or attended school within 100 miles of the pro team's stadium. This whole deal of trading Domincans and Japanese dudes back and forth, and having guys playing for Boston who talk with an Alabama accent, just ruins the whole concept of a "local team." In the old days, it really was much more local. Everything went downhill after the San Francisco Seals traded Joe DiMaggio -- who grew up across the bay from SF -- to the NY Yankees. Posted by: Stateless Infidel at December 27, 2014 04:37 PM (AC0lD) His agent is Scott Boras, and he's asking for 6 years/200 million as a STARTING point in negotiations Only a few deep pocketed teams like the Yankees, Dodgers or Red Sox could afford not only to take the financial hit if Scherzer joins the TJ surgery club, but the "luxury tax" for going over 180 million a year in team payroll. The Dodgers don't need him that much even if they can afford him, and the new management team wants to reduce payroll from 257 million down to 200. The Yankees don't want to blow that much more either, but there's still odds that they sign him if he doesn't stay with the Tigers. The Yanks might not be able to put together a healthy rotation in 2015 I'd say that Shields will sign either with the Red Sox or the SF Giants Posted by: kbdabear at December 27, 2014 04:45 PM (GrXXa) 43

Can't say I blame the owner too much for wanting a new park, the Trop is a fixed dome and the interiors have all the charm of a giant warehouse The Braves convinced politicians in the northern suburbs to build them a brand new park even though Turner Field is only 20 years old and has all the amenities other than being in downtown Atlanta. 22 One of the things I like about baseball is that all the rules are fair, and developed organically.
Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at December 27, 2014 04:55 PM (Zu3d9) Sabathia is trying to recover from microfracture knee surgery, and his fastball velocity dropped to 90 before the knee went Tananka has a partial tear in his UCL, it's unusual to pitch with that and I wouldn't bet on him getting out of spring training without needing TJ surgery Nova is still recovering from TJ surgery from last April and isn't expected back until late June Pineda ALWAYS breaks down, if you get 100 innings out of that guy it's a miracle Cashman is doing the right thing trying to go with younger and controllable (cheaper) players, but who knows when Hank will step in and demand that he breaks the bank like when Hank overruled Cashman about extending A-Hole Posted by: kbdabear at December 27, 2014 05:34 PM (GrXXa) 104

Gotta admire what Theo Epstein has done with the Cubbies, do a total rebuild instead of a half-assed one to try to convince fans they are still "competing". They have a slew of blue chip infielders coming up that will enable them to trade for any pitching they need, or insurance for any prospect that disappoints
The Mets have a huge stash of young pitching, I hope they don't do something stupid like trade their top arms for a gimpy Tulo. Only one-third, (9-12) of MLB teams averages over 4.50 Runs per game in any given year. Posted by: ColdBeer1 (Slap) (T) at December 27, 2014 06:20 PM (16bOT) 164

I was reading an interview with Tom Seaver and the subject of the epidemic of blown UCLs came up
Seaver's opinion is that pitchers don't throw ENOUGH to build up their arms and the teams baby them too much Seaver pitched for almost 20 years in the majors back in the day when complete games weren't an anomaly and 300 innings a year were commonplace, so I'll listen when he says something about it Then again, Seaver isn't investing millions in these elbows holding together, but he might have something with today's pitchers being coddled Posted by: kbdabear at December 27, 2014 06:22 PM (GrXXa) 169

Another fan of minor league ball games. The Nats high A club plays 20 minutes from home. The parking and tickets are very affordable (dollar hot dog night is dangerous), the fans really know the team and care about it, and the venue keeps things close. Also, Saturday home games are followed by a fabulous fireworks display. One of the best entertainment values out there.

Re: Seaver, I agree w/his assessment pitchers don't throw enough. Bob Gibson, Nolan Ryan, and scores of other pitchers threw lots of complete games. I also think the excessive pressure to throw heat has cost lots of guys their careers. John Tudor was a dominant pitcher for a long time, and he couldn't/ didn't need to get out of the 80's mph. And he was a joy to watch. That dude w/the Panama hat and the speed gun at Dodger stadium f'd up the game.

Ryan and Seaver were all legs. They threw gas, almost exclusively, and got their power from their legs. Sound overhead mechanics, good velocity and not too many breaking balls equals lots of innings.

Thanks for all of the Scherzer information! *** For everyone out there, yeah, it's an incredible long shot to win, but MLB.com does have their FREE Beat the Streak' contest where select one or two players a day to get a hit. If you get 57 players in a row that get hits, you win $5.6 million. It's a silly, fun way to waste a few minutes a day on baseball, and you never know. I gotta say, it really makes you think how truly amazing it is to get hits in 56 consecutive games. Posted by: Stateless Infidel at December 27, 2014 06:41 PM (AC0lD) 192

Got called out today to pick up a piece of equipment from a drilling rig that's slated to join the mothball fleet....as it were. A semi large drilling company is scaling back it's presence in Pennsylvania, you see. In part....downward pressure on NG prices. Also, our new governor has promised to share the Pot of Gold fracking represents with just everyone. Except those that do the actual work....or did. So they're packing up, and moving to greener pastures, like Ohio, and Indiana. Even West Virginia. If Tom, "The Drooling Idiot", Wolfe really wanted to share this pot of gold, he would have cut taxes on the gas industry, and tied future tax rates to the retail price of NG. McCarver retorted "that's DOUGLAS MacArthur, Ralph" Don't be fooled by the malaprops though, Kiner had a sharp mind for baseball and ran circles around McCarver when it came to making the game interesting and knowing what he was talking about. BC, I think you're way too optimistic on Matt Kemp's production. His physical at the trade revealed that he has congenital arthritis in both hips. He had a great second half last year but his speed and his defense have deteriorated badly. The Dodgers wanted badly to dump his huge contract and the Padres indulged them. Even though the Dodgers are throwing in 32 million of the 107 mil still due Kemp for the next 5 years, he's going to be a Josh Hamilton level albatross before long
The only trade that Preller pulled off that I think he got the better part of was the trade of a handful of middling prospects for one year of Justin Upton, and that's if the Padres manage to re-sign J-Up Posted by: kbdabear at December 27, 2014 07:11 PM (GrXXa) 221

I have to dispute your approval of the Tigers trading Porcello away for 1 year of Cespedes too.
Porcello is still young and controllable and has quite a bit of upside. Cespedes is another one dimensional player with a prima donna attitude who has declared that he will definitely test the free agent market next year. His contract has a clause in it that unlike most FA's, he cannot be given a Qualifying Offer and therefore the Tigers wouldn't even get a compensation draft pick Porcello has every chance of being as good as or better than James Shields in my opinion Posted by: kbdabear at December 27, 2014 07:16 PM (GrXXa) 224

The Cubs will regret Lester's 6-year, $155-million deal by Year 3 or 4, if not sooner. Paying a No. 2 starter (and in some seasons, he really only performed as a No. 3 starter) a deal like that when he's already 31 years old when he first takes the mound for them is a mistake. The per-year amount isn't a huge problem; it's the length of the deal that is. Nonetheless, I'm not a Cubs fan but I hope it works out for them and they are able to break their curse, like the Red Sox eventually did.

I agree that the deal was too long. ...as it were. (Wrong-side of thirty and all.) Three years is all they need, however. He's also got the type of "stuff" to become a Bullpen-Ace after those three years. If the Cubs have to "eat" some of that contract, it may not all be for naught. His N.L. stats should provide the value that they are looking for during this perceived "Five-Year Window". Posted by: ColdBeer1 (Slap) (T) at December 27, 2014 07:35 PM (16bOT) 237

Posted by: ColdBeer1 (Slap) (T) at December 27, 2014 07:35 PM (16bOT) I think you nailed the thinking by Epstein and Chicago. Lester has proven to be fairly reliable in big games and moving to the NL where he doesn't have to face a DH should help him. I still think it's too much to pay for the guy. Based on the economics of baseball, the per-year amount is reasonable, but I still think it's ridiculous for teams to be spending this much for any player, especially ones that only play every fourth or fifth day. I'm a lifelong Red Sox fan and winning the 2013 World Series was probably the biggest surprise I've seen in baseball in some time. I was hoping more teams would adopt the Red Sox approach after that and focus on value and team chemistry instead of huge contracts, but it fell apart for the Red Sox last year so I think most teams looked at their approach as a fluke. They may be right, though baseball is the one sport where it's difficult for flukes to occur since the season is so long and the playoff series are multiple games, not a single game like the Super Bowl in football. The biggest oddity in baseball are the bullpens. It is an "X"-Factor that comes out of nowhere to either propel a team or kill it. It is often "no-names" that wind-up anchoring that playoff spot and carrying it forward. Journeymen and rookies are often the stupidest of "glues" that solidify a roster. Starters are your Backbone. Offense is the muscle. Defense is the nervous system. Managers and "chemistry" are the Heart. Bullpens are the skeletal structure. I heard Jack Morris as a tv analyst for the Blue Jays a few times the last year. He was good and very interesting to listen to. I boycotted baseball for 20 years or so after the World Series was cancelled so all of my baseball memories are 20 years plus old. But I remember Jack Morris was one hell of a competitor and you knew it was going to be a tough day for your team when he was the opposing pitcher. Hall of Fame material? I kind of think so. He was the dominant pitcher for years in the AL East when it was comprised of 7 teams, most of them tough. Work to do. Later all..... When Vin Scully talks about "Billy Chapel" pitching... ..."And you know Steve you get the feeling that Billy Chapel isn't pitching against left handers, he isn't pitching against pinch hitters, he isn't pitching against the Yankees. He's pitching against time. He's pitching against the future, against age, and even when you think about his career, against ending. And tonight I think he might be able to use that aching old arm one more time to push the sun back up in the sky and give us one more day of summer." ..."On this day, the cathedral that is Yankee Stadium belongs to a Chapel." These five and six year olds would come out and try to bat and (when they ceased looking at the bugs in the grass) try to catch the ball. The article I remember because it was so cute and funny; and at that time my nephews were playing baseball and football. The helmets were so big in football (and the batting helmets in baseball) that they would turn around and the helmets never moved. To watch them grab their helmets and turn them so they could see was - it was charming. "We're the Giants!" Yeah, you are. Good job, keep at it and walk that one off, alright? Neatsfoot oil is supposed to be oil rendered out of hooved animals feet and leg-bones. It is supposed to be more resistant to gelling because cattle live in the snow and have to have flexible feet.
I use Hubberd's Shoe Grease, which is pine tar and bees' wax, it is cheaper, more waterproof, won't go rancid, causes the brambles to slide off your boots instead of grab and you can always use your used rags as firestarters. Something close to 60% of ticket sales were/are coming from Cobb and North Fulton counties, hence the move. What I object to is the obvious bullshit info put out there to support this move, and the speed at which this came down while not giving those who will ultimately pay for this clusterfark any opportunity for input into the process. Cobb County had this in the works since at least 2009, as I had some of that property until late 2011. The offers slowly went up over a 2 year period, until Satans daughter my Ex, forced a sale. Unasked, she still talks about what a great deal that was, as property ultimately went for 3x what we got. Sno Seal is good shit, BUT it will darken your leather. Two methods of
applying. Heat shoes or heat sno seal. I usually do both. Put shoes in oven at 200 and put the can of wax in there. When wax turns to liquid, take it out an rub into hot shoes. Do twice. They will be waterproof as hell. The wax does not breathe much so they will get warm. Good advice Nip but leather doesn't like heat. Too much and that shit will cook hard as a rock and want to crack and crumble. Whatever temp warm is. Posted by: dartist at December 27, 2014 09:52 PM (ahBY0) 389

Speaking as a guy who used to work in the bush in bad weather, there is nothing that will make leather boots really waterproof. Dubbin, SnowSeal, whatever, it all wears off, even if you melt the product and soak it into the leather. OK if you are walking on cleared trails in a light rain, but get into the rough, where underbrush or deep snow scrapes the uppers of your boots, and any "waterproofing" treatment will fail.

They're doing reconstruction on Wrigley Field this year, rebuilding especially the bleacher sections. For some reason, they're putting up huge scoreboards that obscure the views of the roofs of the buildings on Waveland Ave. Fancy that
Worst "improvement" to a stadium has to be the huge monstrosity in centerfield of the Oakland Mausoleum. Blocked the view of the Oakland Hills which made that ugly piece of shit at least bearable. Last year they had the pleasure of sewage flowing into the dugout and clubhouse Shea Stadium was a dump, but it had character. Something that Citi Field for its nice aesthetics and amenities seems to lack. Funny thing about Candlestick when the Giants played there. It was a horror for baseball but one of the best places to watch football. Dodger Stadium still holds up well, especially since the new owners fixed the place up and paid for security to keep the gangbangers out Posted by: kbdabear at December 27, 2014 09:54 PM (GrXXa) 395

It pisses me off no end that I have to worry about the freakin' CUBS this year. I want out of the NL Central, it's going to be a beast this year. The Cards are eternally a pain in my ass, the Pirates aren't the pushovers they once were, and although the Reds were hampered by a lot of injuries last season, I don't expect that to be the case next season. And now the Cubs, the team I could always count on to keep the Brewers out of the NL Central cellar, are getting serious - oh, crap.
Well, since the Packers are doing well, I'll just focus on football right now. At least our football team is a serious contender. Posted by: Donna &&&&&& V. (handing out sacks of ampersands for Christmas) at December 27, 2014 09:57 PM (+XMAD) 399

Yep, leather has to breathe to survive. Posted by: dartist at December 27, 2014 09:57 PM (ahBY0) 402

Why is the baseball white?
Why do home teams wear white? Road teams wear gray, which is half white. What color are the bases? What about Whitey Ford ? Why am I blackballed? If the lektrik go down, why's that a blackout. Why are short sport pants called Knickers? I am in charge now, answer my queeries Posted by: irreverant Al Sharptooth at December 27, 2014 09:58 PM (4OQp6) 407

They're doing reconstruction on Wrigley Field this year, rebuilding especially the bleacher sections. For some reason, they're putting up huge scoreboards that obscure the views of the roofs of the buildings on Waveland Ave. Fancy that.
******* They have been pissed about the Left field Waveland Ave. Apartments having a game view since I was a kid in the 70s. They want that space for Ads, and as I believe Sam Sell now owns them, that view will be cut off. 383 And as far as I know, the Rockies let Rutledge go. That's the only Rockies move I've heard of so far. We desperately need pitching, and as far as I'm concerned we could have traded Tulowitski and Cargo. Both were out the majority of the season with big contract numbers. We could also use a GM that understands and loves the game. At the rate we're going, I figure we'll be mathematically eliminated by week two. Crap!
Posted by: Old Blue at December 27, 2014 09:48 PM (vVSOO) Rutledge was traded to the Angels for a reliever. They should have held onto him since Tulo is a good bet to spend at least 60 games on the DL. I just wish fellow Mets fans would stop drooling over Tulo just because they could stand an upgrade at SS. They bring out the sabermetrics charts to "prove" that Tulo playing 90 games results in higher WAR than any other SS playing a full year. I don't care if he can cover the entire infield and hits .500, he spends at least 40 percent of the season sitting in the dugout while taking up a large portion of payroll on a team whose owners can't afford it Posted by: kbdabear at December 27, 2014 10:00 PM (GrXXa) 412

As a softball player in western Washington, I quickly gravitated to Hubberd's Shoe Grease on gloves and cleats to prevent water rot. Kept feet and left hand dry.
And as a pitcher in my later years, never went anywhere without crotch armor and safety glasses. Why do the gorilla hitters seem to hit it up the middle? Posted by: Man from Wazzustan at December 27, 2014 10:06 PM (uPxUo) 415
Thanks again, BC Cochran for a baseball thread. A reminder of summertime and good times - even during bad seasons (which for a Brewer fan is most seasons).

"Questions are always raised about Sandoval's weight..."
Yeah, uh huh. Questions were raised about Panda's weight in each of the 3 seasons in 5 years that he played a key role...on the field, in the locker-room and in the town of SF...in bringing the Giants World Series rings. Such questions mostly came from outside the GMen universe and were dumb, so yeah. Pandaval will be Vice Mayor of Boston overnight. He and the Papi could do great things.
