"CROmnibus" Almost Fails, But Then Retired-by-Primary-Loss Conservative Votes "Yes" To Pass It

The guy who switched his vote at the last minute was a conservative from Michigan who had been primaried out of his seat by an Establishment pick (losing by 30 points).

So actually this conservative guy had nothing to impel him to cooperate with the Establishment.

Yet he did.

Posted by: gm at December 11, 2014 01:11 PM (/kBoL)

92 If the numbers that are being reported 50 to 60, maybe more of Republicans hold on against the final passage of the bill later in the day, and all the Democrats who opposed the rule oppose the bill, the bill would fail on final passage. It remains to be seen what will happen.
The mere closeness of the vote on the rule normally a purely procedural matter, but necessary to bring the full bill to the floor of the House is an embarrassment to House Republican leadership, who had been triumphantly claiming for hours on Thursday they had no worries about it at all.
If the Boehner omnibus is killed for good later in the day, congressional leadership is planning to change tack and move forward with a three month stopgap spending bill, or a clean Continuing Resolution.

155 Just as an aside, backscratching, porkbarreling, dealmaking, logrolling and all of the other fun things have been part and parcel of politics since the first politician lied to the first voter and pocketed the first kickback from the first contractor. Why people here get so worked up over "Politician Acts Like Politician" stories is beyond me. It's sort of like pointing out that a Statesman is "A politician who, for a brief period of time, did not act like a politician." and that statesmen are unremarkably rare.

If politicians acting like politicians is enough to doom the republic, then it was doomed during the Revolution. Read up on the Continental Congress - those people weren't acting all high-minded all day long, they reserved that for brief moments when they took their breaks from the usual nonsense that politicians engage in.

So just wondering why the leadership would even consider anything more than a short-term stopgap to get us to a GOP Senate next year. What's the strategy underlying that choice (and it is absolutely a choice)? What could the Dems/WH do if a 3-month CR were the only item on the table from the House?

Why should anyone in the establishment take the grassroots seriously in anything when everything that happens results in a long scream of rage? You may as well go off to the dairy section* and scream at the cheese for all the good that does.

No. In a normal process, there are 12 different appropriations bills that are passed in both the House and Senate and then reconciled. To date, the House has passed 7, the Senate, a grand total of 0. And they had no intention of passing any, Reid likes the Omnibus process.

There is no new funding for Obamacare in Cromnibus and HHS is funded at 2014 level through the end of February when a new appropriations bill for that agency alone must be passed.

Why thank you! I've never been compared to a Bourbon prince before!

To not keep a reserve of cynicism when trying to understand why a politician has acted like a politician is, in my opinion, to disarm yourself. Not every one is motivated by venality, at least I'll say that some have very little compared to the average human. It may actually be that this guy voted this way because he believed that it was the best thing to do for the country, to avoid another squabbling fight over the budget and to avoid a shutdown. I don't have any polling data with me, but I would be surprised if government shutdowns are popular with any demographic outside of AoSHQ commenters and their allies.

There will be plenty of fights coming up once the new Congress is sworn in. Some sort of budget resolution was going to be passed; it was going to be passed with yes and no votes from members of both parties; and it is going to Obama so he has to figure out how many of the remaining members of his own coalition he is going to make happy or sad by either signing or vetoing this thing. I just never saw this as going to be a big fight as it contains in it good and bad.

Yea, my bad. Should have been DHS not HHS.

288 ace surely you have to understand that we've been had. I am so furious with our level of representation that I'm ready to call for a third party or constitutional convention or something.

the fact that I can't even buy a goddamn incandescent light bulb in this supposedly free country is a disgrace. most people are pissed at the spinelessness of current reps. Until our reps decriminalize incandescent lightbulbs, I won't even listen. Spineless assholes, the lot of them.

when will the political class wake up to the fact that we hold them in contempt because they won't stand up for limited and reasonable government?

289 Other than dropping a stupid comment here, what do you suggest I (and people like me ) do?

Vote for the establishment gop person? Ugh. I'd rather eat nails.

292 Have a tissue, Francis.

This is nothing but the projected framework of the Ryan-Murray deal worked out last year. Maybe some people were too busy kissing Ted Cruz' ass to notice it.

There are a couple of amendments which are making Lizzie Warren and Bernie Sanders very angry. That's a good thing.

293 @292
That's your argument in favor of this?
That a compromise (many of us did object to) fashioned before the GOP's wave election should still be good enough?
Are you serious?

294 You guys are looking at this all wrong. Bentivolio's been complaining to anyone that would listen that he feels like the conservative groups abandoned him in his primary (they wouldn't endorse him) and this was a perfect vote to show his displeasure because it's a rule vote and Boehner doesn't have enough for final passage.

295 Nothing says 'I have decide to retire from politics permanently' than giving the fu to your own voters.

298 Hello Web Admin, I noticed that your On-Page SEO is is missing a few factors, for one you do not use all three H tags in your post, also I notice that you are not using bold or italics properly in your SEO optimization. On-Page SEO means more now than ever since the new Google update: Panda. No longer are backlinks and simply pinging or sending out a RSS feed the key to getting Google PageRank or Alexa Rankings, You now NEED On-Page SEO. So what is good On-Page SEO?First your keyword must appear in the title. Then it must appear in the URL.You have to optimize your keyword and make sure that it has a nice keyword density of 3-5% in your article with relevant LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing). Then you should spread all H1,H2,H3 tags in your article.Your Keyword should appear in your first paragraph and in the last sentence of the page. You should have relevant usage of Bold and italics of your keyword. There should be one internal link to a page on your blog and you should have one image with an alt tag that has your keyword....wait there's even more Now what if i told you there was a simple Wordpress plugin that does all the On-Page SEO, and automatically for you? That's right AUTOMATICALLY, just watch this 4minute video for more information at. Seo Plugin
