Oh Boy: Rolling Stone Piece is Even Worse Than You Thought
"Jackie's" Friends: Yeah, She Made Up This Guy She Had a Date With That Night
Cooke excerpts a Washington Post piece which is absolutely damning, and, as he says, if not the final nail in the coffin, at least the one that pins the lid shut.
The three friends who heard her claims the night they allegedly occurred now say that the story presented in Rolling Stone is very unlike the story they heard that night.The three said Jackie did not specifically identify a fraternity that night. . . .Okay, that's problematic, but we already sort of knew that, given that another friend had to point out the fraternity and tell "Jackie" "That's where you were raped."
There's more. Sabrina Rubin Erdley -- who can now be credibly accused of being a straight-up fabulist -- claimed previously that one of the friends, "Randall," refused to be interviewed, citing, she claims, "loyalty to his frat." Randall says he was not asked for an interview by Erdley at all but if he had been asked he would have agreed. This is a major, major problem for Erdley. If true -- and I am finding it difficult to think of reasons to give Erdley the benefit of the doubt -- this is not a case of "Jackie" misleading her, but of Erdley on her own behalf lying to readers and the public.
They said there are mounting inconsistencies with the original narrative in the magazine. The students also expressed suspicions about Jackie's allegations from that night. They said the name she provided as that of her date did not match anyone at the university, and U-Va. officials confirmed to The Post that no one by that name has attended the school. And photographs that were texted to one of the friends showing her date that night actually were pictures depicting one of Jackie's high school classmates in Northern Virginia. That man, now a junior at a university in another state, confirmed that the photographs are of him and said he barely knew Jackie and hasn't been to Charlottesville for at least six years.
The article's writer, Sabrina Rubin Erdely, did not respond to requests for comment this week.You don't say. It's an interesting, and I'm sure entirely unrelated, quirk of history that Sabrina Rubin Erdley was a colleague of Steven Glass' on the Daily Pennsylvanian newspaper. Both were UPenn, Class of '94.

We got a subscription from one of the grandkids, I don't remember which one. I thought, "OK, this'll be kinda kewl since I read that back when I Was A Teenaged Moron."
Then the first issue arrived, which had a lot of issues. The letters to the editor page read like a middle school slam book. I wondered for a long time if any of those letters were real, they were that stoopid. I'm giving them straight to DIL#2 instead of recycling them now.

I knew a woman in DC in the early '90's who had driven herself nuts believing her therapist had helped her "recover memories" of her parents being in a Satanic cult that raped and murdered kids. It's not real uncommon to have juniors and seniors take even freshman chemistry courses. Typically that happens when partway through college they decide to try to get into med school, and need freshman chemistry as a prerequisite to organic chemistry (absolutely required for med school).

This happens more than people want to admit. Not that the motivation is one that arises only with females, just that it is a unique charge usually generated by only females.
People make up lies all the time to hurt others, to hide something they did they're ashamed of (rightly or wrongly), to excuse themselves to their parents or their wife or husband or their SO's, or their church or their friends.
False testimony has been going on since man stood up for the first time. (and maybe before as research has shown that the higher primates can lie also)
This is why the hiding of the claimants name can be damaging. Testimony can be held back, eye witnesses not aware that they are don't speak up, those that do this consistently/constantly aren't exposed.
That rape victims claim special treatment reeks havoc on our system of justice and the search for the facts.

Jackie didn't need two cell phones, and may have been impersonating fake guy right in the room with her friends.
There's some kind of app that lets you spoof phone numbers, and lots of kids are so glued to their phones, it isn't unusual for a roomful of them to all be playing with their gadgets while watching tv, talking, etc.
It was a big thing at my kids' highschool over the past few years. One time my son had some friends over, including his girlfriend. One of the friends didn't like the girlfriend, and suddenly she started getting nasty texts from someone who wasn't there.
But it turned out they were.

Anyone who has any memory of college and any honesty or insight at all should have seen through this from the beginning. Freshman arrive at college often not knowing anyone. This is particularly true at fairly "elite" colleges, because they draw kids from all over the country.
They are thus often understandably anxious to fit in, and the way to do that often includes telling tall tales to new friends to make themselves look cooler, hipper, smarter, more accomplished, more dramatic.
Sometimes it's relatively innocuous. Kids lie about their high school GPAs or their SAT scores. Kids lie about their achievements in high school sports. Sometimes they lie, weirdly, but understandably, to make themselves look more worldly. They tell stories about what they did when they were "wasted." They tell stories about illegal things they did.
And, yes, very very often they tell stories about sex.
Again, most of the time this fabulism is innocuous and sometimes, if the storyteller is a good one, a raconteur, it can even be charming.
But in a college culture that increasingly puts a premium on being a victim -- of racism or of rape are the two prime examples -- sometimes these stories require the manufacturing of a villain. And then they're not innocuous; then they cross over into an accusation that can ruin a young person's life.
Not sure what to do about any of this. A young girl lies to get a young boy to notice her, to make him jealous. Then, when that doesn't work, she plays on hisgood nature as a nice guywith a yarn about being raped.I suspect stories like this happen more than we know.

I think that there is a case to be made that there are real similarities. The revived KKK from the early 20th century was founded by a salesman who was looking to get rich from membership fees and franchising. The people at the top of the organization were not particularly sold on the ideology they were selling but saw it as a way to draw in the people who made them rich.
Much like the the modern day Washington DC GOP who seem to view the bulk of the Republicans who keep them in power and in bucks as a contemptible pack of sheep to be sheared.
