Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Rolling Stone Editor, 2006: "I Want to Do Stuff That's Biased;" "We'll Write What We Believe"He was speaking about the hard left's idea -- now standard in the leftwing Democrat-partisan media -- that to offer "objective" journalism is a betrayal of the truth, as only one side (the leftist side) has any truth in it. His intent was to make Rolling Stone as "biased" as he could. Mission accomplished.Editors should never let go of their first-impression skepticism -- it's often dead-on. But [Rolling Stone editor in chief Will] Dana and others decided to move forward with the story and its allegation that a University of Virginia freshman named Jackie was gang-raped in September 2012 at the prestigious Phi Kappa Psi fraternity house. The piece has collapsed under a debunking from the Washington Post' local staff and Rolling Stone has apologized for the many unsupported claims that it peddles. How did this happen? ... Whatever Rolling Stone finds, "A Rape on Campus" clearly aligns with Dana's vision for high-impact magazine journalism. In a 2006 appearance at Middlebury College, Dana gave a speech titled, "The Myth of Fair and Balanced: A Defense of Biased Reporting." According to a writeup in the Middlebury Campus, Dana put forth a common and compelling critique of contemporary standards under which journalists "worship the grail of objectivity" and "play twister to hide their bias," said Dana, a 1985 graduate of Middlebury. "I want to do stuff that's biased." He merely meant journalism driven by a worldview, as with Eric Schlosser's 1998 Rolling Stone expose, "Fast-Food Nation" -- a series that upended thinking on the worl'’s McDonald’s and the like. "We can become the seed pod for great things,"said Dana of such work. Though the editor said his publication would endeavor to give both sides of a story, he said, "we'll write what we believe," according to the Middlebury Campus.Maybe Will Dana is waking up to the possibility that "twisting oneself to hide one's bias" isn't something that's done to be gentle to Republicans, but rather something done in order to find the truth. Their piece dripped with "worldview," as Wemple terms it. And how did that turn out? Perhaps a little bit of that old-fogey skepticism and balance might have served them, and their readers, and the truth, a little better that partisan sloganeering, eh? Meanwhile, Dana is now apologizing for his original apology, which had been criticized for putting almost all blame on "Jackie." The new apology only puts 90% of the blame on "Jackie." See... I have no problem with "bias" when it comes to political reporting or opinion pieces. Whether the party in question is "being obstructionist" or "holding the line on X" is largely a matter of on which side of X you fall.
What RS did here was not "biased" reporting. Bias is saying things like "It's clear to everyone on campus that Z, but opponents claim Y." This was a failure to fact-check, pure and simple. Yes, they did it *because* of their bias, but the bias (to me) is secondary. Forget "biased." It was *false* (and easily provably so). And that's the unforgivable sin, here. Who reads The Rolling Stone? The same people who watch The Daily Show? (although I do not believe they actually read anything - maybe look at the pictures). But, was The Rolling Stone ever considered journalism? I always thought of it as a magazine written by pot-heads so-to-speak. Took it with a grain of salt. Sensationalism. Let's be real here, Rolling Stone hasn't been particularly relevant in almost 2 decades. This story has probably caught certain people off guard for no other reason than a befuddlement that the magazine is still in business. It's more than likely that Rolling Stone will disappear altogether in another few years, and stuff like this will only accelerate its decline. So I guess there is a sort of justice at work here.

1. Higher taxes reduce gasoline, cigarette, and carbon use, but not business activity. 2. Colleges and universties are hotbeds of sexual abuse that everyone should attend unless you are Asian. 3. Raising awareness is morally equivalent to direct action. 4. The science is settled. We can't find 95% of the universe. 5. 1948 to 1967 is a vast gray swath of in the Israeli/Palestinian saga in which nothing happened. 6. Microaggresions are real in our language and we should not take Iranian words at face value. 7. All those Soviet invasion plans for Western Europe were forgeries. 8. Union teachers with a Common Core curriculuum are the answer to what ails us. Unless you are Asian. 9. DNA swabs to find a rapist are necessary. Paternity tests are an invasion of privacy. 10. So at the risk of sounding like a misogynistic bastard, it seems to me that all of the rape on campus allegations seem to be turning out to be of the "we had hot drunken monkey sex, it made me feel like a cheap whore the next morning so I'm going to accuse the guy of rape" variety (when they aren't outright fabrications like the RS story). The sad thing is real rape (rape-rape, if you will) when it happens gets thrown on the same "yeah whatever" scrap-heap.

"Wizard's First Rule: people are stupid." Richard and Kahlan frowned
even more. "People are stupid; given proper motivation, almost anyone will believe almost anything. Because people are stupid, they will believe a lie because they want to believe it's true, or because they are afraid it might be true. People's heads are full of knowledge, facts, and beliefs, and most of it is false, yet they think it all true. People are stupid; they can only rarely tell the difference between a lie and the truth, and yet they are confident they can, and so are all the easier to fool. "Because of Wizards First Rule, the old wizards created Confessors, and Seekers, as a means of helping find the truth, when the truth is important enough. Darken Rahl knows the Wizard"s Rules. He is using the first one. People need an enemy to feel a sense of purpose. It's easy to lead people when they have a sense of purpose. Sense of purpose is more important by far than the truth. In fact, truth has no bearing in this. Darken Rahl is providing them with an enemy, other than himself, a sense of purpose. People are stupid; they want to believe, so they do." I recently had the opportunity the browse through the Master's Theses of UC Berkeley's School of Journalism. They're all just sitting there along shelves in the main conference room -- anyone can flip through them, like it's a library.
Every single one -- and I mean every single one -- promoted some leftist narrative. Students are not allowed to just choose any topic they want -- they often get noodging advice, and whatever they do choose has to be approved by their advisor. So all of these theses were either directly suggested by the professors, or noodged in a direction b the professors, as the students try to please them. Most of the theses are exactly like a long Rolling Stone feature story -- your graduation thesis assignment is basically to write a big publishable article, as if it was for a real magazine. (Or take photos for the same.) So -- what were the topics? - Migrant farmworkers are sad, because they miss their familes back in Mexico. - Little black kids eat paint chips that had lead in them, because the kids are soooooo hungry, and the lead is making them retarded. - 12-year-old ghetto girls get pregnant because mean Christian PTA members try to ban sex ed. - Did we mention illegal immigrants? Yeah they're really sad about being exploited 'n' stuff. - Urban hipster farms are really cool and will solve the world's food problem without relying on MONSANTO!!! - A day at the suicide prevention line, where all the callers have really sad victim stories. - Trannies! Something about trannies. I don't really need to make any point, because -- trannies! - etc. etc. It's not that the writing is bad or that it's full of "lies" -- it's that the stories must "promote the narrative". That is the only requirement. Posted by: zombie at December 08, 2014 03:55 PM (K4YiS) 249

KA's?
Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc Nope. It pissed off a few fainting flowers. Some of the professors thought it was funny. I remember everyone stopping dead silent in class when it went of. The professor laughed, noted that it muust be them, and carried on. I have no idea if they still have it. I highly doubt it. Posted by: Blue Hen at December 08, 2014 04:05 PM (Spluw) 287
Mr. Dana is a big fan of first-person pronouns, isn't he? The Left are all about being special snowflakse in a high-security, high-income world of make believe.

The sad thing is real rape (rape-rape, if you will) when it happens gets thrown on the same "yeah whatever" scrap-heap.
I think that is a feature to the left and not a bug. Look at all the leftists have done for the black folks and their community. Posted by: Jukin at December 08, 2014 04:13 PM (WGm5T) 304
Ace wrote, "Perhaps a little bit of that old-fogey skepticism and balance might have served them, and their readers, and the truth, a little better that partisan sloganeering, eh?" False assumption. They're not after the truth, which the Left views as an archaic, purely binary (and thus self-limiting)cultural construction. To them, truth is relative, a matter of semantics, framing, narrativeand perspective. That's why assholes like former New Jersey governor Jim McGreevy can say things like 'My truthis...' with a straight face. This worldview and the real-world actions that follow fromit is one of the reasons whywe will always beat a disadvantagewith these people. For them, not only domeans justifyends, those means--however dishonest or amoral by traditional standards of right and wrong--require no justification in the first place. Greta Van Susteren @greta Pres Obama just arrived at GWU to do Colbert Report on Comedy Channel - airs tonight Posted by: Costanza Defense at December 08, 2014 03:16 PM (ZPrif) Interesting, considering that last night Colbert made a pretty snarky comment about JugEars at the Kennedy Center Honors. Something about how Moochelle must not want to run for office, because she's allowing herself to be photographed in public beside her husband. http://tinyurl.com/nrf6qbq Posted by: IllTemperedCur at December 08, 2014 04:24 PM (TIIx5) 306
On December 5, 2014, Rolling Stone editor Sean Woods told the Washington Post that they had tried to contact the accused men, but weren't successful.
But on that same day, managing editor Will Dana said that the magazine DIDN'T try to contact the accused because of an "agreement" between Jackie and the author, Sabrina Rubin Erdely that they could not contact the men. Which is it Rolling Stone? Did you try to contact the men or not? Someone has some 'splaining to do. Posted by: Jane at December 08, 2014 04:38 PM (rDidp) 307

okay, just finished reading the "why we believed" article on Politico from the UVa "journalist", and was struck by this remarkable snippet of a paragraph from the best and brightest who wrote it: "In my 20-person major seminar, there are at least two. That is not a calculus I should have to work out in the margins of my Marx-Engels reader." Sweetie, it isn't calculus, and if your MARX-ENGELS READER is telling you that on Saturdays, one in five equals two out of twenty, no wonder college is ****** up. Hello Web Admin, I noticed that your On-Page SEO is is missing a few factors, for one you do not use all three H tags in your post, also I notice that you are not using bold or italics properly in your SEO optimization. On-Page SEO means more now than ever since the new Google update: Panda. No longer are backlinks and simply pinging or sending out a RSS feed the key to getting Google PageRank or Alexa Rankings, You now NEED On-Page SEO. So what is good On-Page SEO?First your keyword must appear in the title. Then it must appear in the URL.You have to optimize your keyword and make sure that it has a nice keyword density of 3-5% in your article with relevant LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing). Then you should spread all H1,H2,H3 tags in your article.Your Keyword should appear in your first paragraph and in the last sentence of the page. You should have relevant usage of Bold and italics of your keyword. There should be one internal link to a page on your blog and you should have one image with an alt tag that has your keyword....wait there's even more Now what if i told you there was a simple Wordpress plugin that does all the On-Page SEO, and automatically for you? That's right AUTOMATICALLY, just watch this 4minute video for more information at. Seo Plugin
