Worse and Worse: Rolling Stone Admitted There Were A Few Minor Problems with Its UVA Rape Story Just as Washington Post Was About to Drop the Nuke on Them
Rolling Stone doesn't appear to have dug into the details of its story (the details of which already should have been confirmed) on its own.
Rather, it seems that the Washington Post dug into the details, asked Rolling Stone for comment, and Rolling Stone, realizing it had an indefensible story (and I do emphasize the word "story") on its hands, not to mention a likely hundred million dollar defamation lawsuit, scrambled to say Oh we totes got taken in by our source. You can read Allah's digest, or go to the Washington Post's expose of the false Rolling Stone story.Well. This is very Salem Witch-hunt like. We have one likely hysteric make an implausible accusation, one involving ritual rape as a core institutional recruitment tool, and when people say, "That seems somewhat implausible to me," there come the shrieks from the other hysterics: Then you are a Rape Denier! How is this different from Salem? "I saw Goody Hauptman Dancing with the Devil." "Um, that doesn't seem very likely to me." "Do you deny the Devil's works?! Are you in fact a Devil Worshipper yourself?!?!" As Allah concludes, no lessons will be learned from this, except, I think, this one: The Hysterical Accusers now know they have to make even more hysterically defamatory accusations to shut down any kind of skeptical inquiry at an even earlier stage. If you permit people to ask questions, then they will eventually come across the truth. Hence, you must cow them from ever even considering asking a question in the first place. Phi Kappa Psi said it did not host "a date function or social event" during the weekend of Sept. 28, 2012, the night that Jackie alleges she was invited to a date party, lured into an upstairs room and was then ambushed and gang-raped by seven men who were rushing the fraternity. The fraternity also said that it has reviewed the roster of employees at the university's Aquatic and Fitness Center for 2012 and found that it does not list a member of the fraternity -- a detail Jackie provided in her account to Rolling Stone and in interviews with The Washington Post -- and that no member of the house matches the description detailed in the Rolling Stone account. The statement also said that the house does not have pledges during the fall semester. ... Earlier this week, Jackie revealed to friends for the first time the full name of her alleged attacker, a name she had never disclosed to anyone. But after looking into that person's background, the group that had been among her closest supporters quickly began to raise suspicions about her account. The friends determined that the student that Jackie had named was not a member of Phi Kappa Psi and that other details about his background did not match up with information Jackie had disclosed earlier about her perpetrator.

Jackie’s former roommate, Rachel Soltis, said she noticed emotional and physical changes to her friend during the fall semester of 2012, when the two shared a suite on campus. Soltis said Jackie did not tell her about the alleged sexual assault until January 2013. Soltis said she did not notice any apparent wounds on Jackie’s body at the time that might have indicated a brutal attack.

"I know it was Phi Psi because a year afterward my friend pointed out the building to me and said that's where it happened."
I can't state this more emphatically: If Jackie's story is partially or wholly untrue, it doesn't validate the reasons for disbelieving her.

That may be true of the left wing journalist class, but not so for society in general. The first thought of many was the Duke Lacrosse case. Next time, the first thought will be the Duke Lacrosse case and the UVA case. This will cause more in the public to be skeptical of media accounts. That is a good thing, and a lesson learned.

Note that all of Jackie's friends, the ones Rolling Stone used to "verify" her account, are "rape activists." One says she herself was raped and attempted raped in her first two years at the school. Averaged one rape incident per year did she.

I don't know the circumstances around his case, it seems like he is in trouble for a number of things including stealing crab legs from a grocery store or something, which seems a strange thing to steal when you are looking for a snack, but I digress.
I think there is some truth to that statement, sure the psychological damage, and physical damage are not equitable on any level. But that accusation will follow you maybe to the grave regardless of if you were cleared or not, and it will influence how the world reacts to you particularly in the shrinking global environment of social media. Once an accused rapist, always an accused rapist no matter how innocent you may be. I'm guessing people kill themselves over this. How do you do the calculus for that damage?
So this notion that you can't challenge this made up fantasy storytime BS is effing dangerous. This and the Lena Dunham thing makes me sick to my stomach. What is this, it's the hip thing to proclaim yourself a victim of sexual assault? That is gross, and it demeans actual victims, and makes incalculable collateral damage on those slimed with the accusations.

Girl goes missing over Cinco de Mayo weekend. Becomes minor national news story.
IIRC she disappeared Friday night. Almost immediately by the next morning the parents were in town from wherever they were.
Which struck a few of us as odd, because, I mean all of us had been off the grid for a few hours here and there. Just as a matter of...life.

This raises some questions, after all who decides to go camping at 10PM on Friday (the last time her restaurant friends saw her)? Plus how'd she get back to the same restaurant district (several miles from school) by Sunday afternoon? The place they said she went camping was a good 2 drive.
Suddenly people are being told "DON'T QUESTION THE NARRATIVE."
and BAM all the news stories go dark. I mean literally. Links from places like Fark are now 404'd. The school pulled some huge favors to make it happen.

I think I'd agree with that (the "almost" part, anyway).
Even if you're acquitted, the accusation will follow you for the rest of your life. Think of the Duke Lacrosse case, as one "for example."
Your reputation is ruined. You might be able to run away from it (say- moving far away from home to where people haven't heard about the story, or don't realize you're *that* person), but why should you have to?
And that's only one bad part of false rape charges.

Frankly, I think UVA acted responsibly given the potential seriousness. It would be somewhat contra intellectual to do otherwise.
One certainly has to verify the facts, something very difficult and time consuming. But I don't see, given the reputational problems this was creating, their actions as anything but sagacious as the investigation was ongoing. They were under a pretty withering assault.

Rather than simply state this is a very serious story and they are going to get to the bottom of it, rather than immediately bring in the UVA police department, rather than investigating the accusation, rather than declare that they will seek to bring the perpetrators to justice under the law, the UVA administration's first and only response was to suspend all fraternities and to denigrate them. It is no secret that if the administration had their way, fraternities would be a thing of the past. The RS store presented an opportunity for them to do that. Their first instinct was not to do everything in their power to take these monsters off the street, it was to denigrate fraternities.
No they did not act responsibly.

have been able to debunk this story a day after it was printed. It took

Sorry, I just hate this sort of nonsense.
Earlier this year, Stacy McCain talked about the details that make you realize a story might be true. Juanita Broadrick said that Clinton bit into her lip to force her compliance - and that was 1) surprising, but 2) made you realize it might be true.
When I finally read the article, the details of the story screamed at me that the story, as related, was not credible.
It frosts me that being someone who asks that a story conform to reality makes me a "rape apologist".

This allows the public to know the character of the accuser and the accused.
There will be some who will concur with the opinion or have knowledge of the reverse.
Only by public knowledge can we be certain that those who have information but who are not knowledgeable of the accusation will be able to contribute.
This applies in either direction.
Personally I'm of the opinion that this should apply to all crime at all ages but the majority disagrees. But we have seen very consistently the dangers of hiding false accusers names. They use the anonymity as a shield against the truth.

In the mid 80's, I was single and stationed in Wahiawa Hi... a Navy Communications station...
Because for Men is was considered shore duty, for women Sea duty, the base was at least half women...
Living in NCO Barracks there, was a hoot.... Parties everywhere...

In the UVA case, the woman waited 8 months before going to the university. And the only reason she reported the rape at that time was because the university came to her, wanting to know why she was failing half her classes. Her response was the rape story.

In the real world; you'd need a blood transfusion and medical attention before 3 hours was up. If the story was true, she'd almost certainly be dead; and she wasn't dead.
Clearly knowing that people have a finite amount of blood in them and that glass tends to let that blood out quickly was just "brute luck" on my part; and the story was entirely plausible... because most humans don't have blood that leaks out and causes issues when removed.
