Rolling Stone: Hey, About That BS Rape Story...

Well, well, well. Don't actually click that link as it goes to Rolling Stone and they don't deserve any more hits.

To Our Readers:

Last month, Rolling Stone published a story titled "A Rape on Campus" by Sabrina Rubin Erdely, which described a brutal gang rape of a woman named Jackie at a University of Virginia fraternity house; the university's failure to respond to this alleged assault – and the school's troubling history of indifference to many other instances of alleged sexual assaults. The story generated worldwide headlines and much soul-searching at UVA. University president Teresa Sullivan promised a full investigation and also to examine the way the school responds to sexual assault allegations.

Because of the sensitive nature of Jackie's story, we decided to honor her request not to contact the man she claimed orchestrated the attack on her nor any of the men she claimed participated in the attack for fear of retaliation against her. In the months Erdely spent reporting the story, Jackie neither said nor did anything that made Erdely, or Rolling Stone's editors and fact-checkers, question Jackie's credibility. Her friends and rape activists on campus strongly supported Jackie's account. She had spoken of the assault in campus forums. We reached out to both the local branch and the national leadership of the fraternity where Jackie said she was attacked. They responded that they couldn't confirm or deny her story but had concerns about the evidence.

In the face of new information, there now appear to be discrepancies in Jackie's account, and we have come to the conclusion that our trust in her was misplaced. We were trying to be sensitive to the unfair shame and humiliation many women feel after a sexual assault and now regret the decision to not contact the alleged assaulters to get their account. We are taking this seriously and apologize to anyone who was affected by the story.

7 I apologize for a potential thread-steal, but I didn't know where else to post it and have it be seen. This is a belated response to commenters from Drew's "Reps are de stoopid" thread below, asking for "my solution" instead of simply continuing to restate our political inertia ad infinitum.

AosHQ is a powerful blog. People know people who know people -- some important, rich, influential people. Let's see if some of Ace's prestige, or Gabe's connections, or Jonah Goldberg or VDH or CW Cooke or Erik Erickson or anybody can reach out to legitimate money interests (Palin? Trump? Koch?) who are also disgusted with the GOPe and start a legitimate grass-roots third-party movement at the local level. (For the record, I'm not necessarily endorsing any of these folks for public office, but can you say they're worse than what we've got?)

Not everywhere, but start SOMEWHERE and build it. It might take a few election cycles to sufficiently grow to national stature; meanwhile, the newly-formed Ewok Party is electing mayors and dogcatchers all over the place, building an organizational structure to launch a viable repeal-everything candidate in 2024 or 2028.

You can't "reform" the Republican Party. We've been trying that for a generation, and it doesn't worked. Move on. This is a compromise between "Please sir can I have another" and "Let It Burn." I'd happily volunteer for this Ewok army, and so would millions of others.

The only guy I know of who's actively boots-on-the-ground is Truman North, and I have tremendous respect for his valiant efforts despite impossible odds.

"Because, Amanda Marcotte, propagating the myth that all those who claim
to be victims MUST BE BELIEVED WITHOUT QUESTION is foolish cruel.

"Because, Amanda Marcotte, when some of those women (and men) are proven
to be LYING, it plants the seed of doubt abt the NEXT alleged victim

"Congratulations, Amanda Marcotte! By failing to observe basic
objectivity, you have just made it easier for rapists to get away with
rape.

"You enable rapists, Amanda Marcotte, through your close-minded belief
that people who say they were raped are all telling the truth.

"And for that, Amanda Marcotte, I regard you with the same palpable
disgust as I do "victims" who falsely cry rape, and rapists themselves.

"There can be no leniency for rapists, nor for those who falsely accuse
an innocent person of rape. And that includes those who enable them."

U-Va. fraternity to rebut claims of gang rape in Rolling Stone http://wapo.st/1vnF3ed

Officials close to the fraternity said that the statement will indicate that Phi Kappa Psi did not host a party on Sept. 28, 2012, the night that a university student named Jackie alleges she was invited to a date party, lured into an upstairs room and was then ambushed and gang-raped by seven men who were rushing the fraternity.

The officials also said that no members of the fraternity were employed at the university’s Aquatic Fitness Center during that time frame — a detail Jackie provided in her account to Rolling Stone and in interviews with The Washington Post — and that no member of the house matches the description detailed in the Rolling Stone account.

186 "Right. And she had to have the best/worst rape story to beat all the other girls' actual rape stories of actual rape."

Imagine for one moment what might be going through the minds of genuine rape victims who were preyed upon in those meetings. It's horrific. They were trying to surmount a hideous experience, and they became part of some sick game of one-ups-manship.

223 Oh, and here's one for my rant: the problem of waking up feeling raped, girls and boys, after binge drinking weekend blackout and heaven knows what else, is yours. You go to the party. You funnel beer bongs like Mary Landrieu from LA, accept drinks with possible drugs, party, party, black out. hug the porcelain throne, hurl, repeat every weekend, . Have photos taken of you blacked out (yes, my morons, there are actual blogs or facebooks of this, with passed out students, lying in their own urine and vomit, with crap piled on them for laughs or an outline of beer cans---and, yes, I know this sounds like a moron meet-up, but hear me out). These are kids, often under 20. They do not realized they could DIE from either choking on their own vomit or alcohol poisoning...much less the easy rape factor. Hell, they could smother under the crap their drunk friends pile on them before the photo.

College binge drinking is a huge problem. Huge. Doing this crap to be admitted into certain frats or societies is a form of hazing. And it happens every weekend and most colleges. Every weekend.

So, back to rape story, a girl gets smashed at a party, wakes up with her panties missing, notes various injuries, remembers nothing, and realizes: rape. Has no freaking idea who did it or how many did it to her. Maybe reports it, gets tested for STD's, pregnancy, and HIV, maybe not. Or, maybe she is totally horrified and/or sort of remembers this one guy she has a crush on who later ignores her and she wants revenge and files Title IX...which SHOULD BE filed for waking up raped but not for "I had sex with Joe from Krappa Fi and he dumped me when he realized I wear Hello Kitty panties." Title IX is being majorly abused in colleges across the country with lawsuits by the expelled guys...some who have texts and witnesses to prove the sex was a hook up and consensual. Does not matter: they have a penis, so guilty, expelled.

If I had a son in college today I would be far worse than I was a few years ago (and I have been preaching about HIV since they entered kindergarten). It ain't no war on wimmen but on men. xoxo

234 One of the biggest problems is that they are defining rape down. They have been doing it for years.

the first step was defining any sexual intercourse a woman had while drunk "rape" if she was upset the next day.

So, if two 18 year old kids are equally drunk, and engage in consensual sex while drunk, but the woman wakes up and regrets the sex, it is not "rape".

The man is responsible for his actions while drunk - the woman is not.

I am getting to the point - much as I am for racial discrimination claims - that I don't believe the claims.

when someone claims they were discriminated against, I never believe it anymore. When you water down "discrimination" to such a point that someone "feeling" "dissed" equals discrimination - I know longer feel sympathy for you or believe you were subject to anything.

If anything, the burden to prove you were discriminated against has become higher in my mind because I am not going to believe you without rock-solid evidence.

the same is not becoming true of claims of "rape". When you water it down to the point where anything is rape, I am now not going to believe anyone who claims rape.

the same way the race card has less and less value when played, the rape card is going to end up.

Note how they now use the verb "claimed." The purported rape victim, Jackie, now "claimed" that a man (a boy named "Drew") orchestrated the attack. She now "claimed" that other boys participated in the gang rape.

Then they say unequivocally that "our trust in her was misplaced."

My interpretation? They've figured out through re-reporting the story that it was a hoax. They don't say what "discrepancies" or "new information" caused them to come to this conclusion. But I'll bet they have some pretty damning stuff.

Here's what I think happened to cause this extraordinary mea culpa. I think a lawyer for the fraternity or the boys or the university came to them with hard evidence that the girl was lying. I think they then said that they were prepared to file a multi-million dollar libel suit against Rolling Stone if they didn't retract it.

Note here that these aren't public figures. These are young college aged men with a lifetime of earning potential in front of them as graduates of an elite university. The privileges that attach to false statements about public figures so long as they aren't malicious don't apply to libel of non-public figures. So the chances of making out a claim for libel are significantly greater. And the damages to these young men could be very high indeed. Frankly, a class action on behalf of the hundreds or perhaps thousands of members of UVA fraternities against Rolling Stone wouldn't be out of the question.

So... when you read "we are taking this seroiusly and apologize," you should interpret that as "please please please don't sue us."

Even Jackie's friends don't believe her story now. Read the Washington Post article. This week, for the very first time, Jackie revealed the real name of "Drew" -- her date and the guy who supposedly took her to the party (that never happened) at the frat house and directed the entire rape.

The guy Jackie named never met her, never was a member of the frat, never worked at the aquatic center, and of course never dated or raped Jackie.

Also, one of Jackie's friends who was quoted in the RS article now says that Jackie has changed details of the rape over time. This friend says Jackie initially told her that she was raped by 5 guys at the frat house, but later increased her number of rapists to 7.

251 Because of the clicky-bait-y nature of Jackie's story we were trying to avoid looking for any facts or journalism to get in the way of promoting the narrative we wanted. As some others are actually doing research and have facts and evidence; we now need to publish something to explain why we lied to you and thought claiming we really really care might help.

So remember we really care about rape victims; and it was that, and not a desire to drive traffic with lies and slander, is why we published the story we did.

Bush constantly saying nice things about Democrats [while Democrats constantly say nasty things about Bush] is EXACTLY the reason we are where we are today*. Bush never defended himself or Republican/conservative principles. Bush never made his case to The People.

Bush sucked as president. Bush was an awful politician who might have killed the chances of an R winning another national election.

*If you think this makes Bush a better person than the Democrats, you're an idiot, too.

340 I knew this would happen. Once the rape culture nonsense got mainstreamed, disturbed (or evil) individuals would start coming up with more outlandish rape tales.
You know what this is? It's a moral panic for the secular left in the same way the religious right had a moral panic about all the non-existent Satanic cults in the 1980s. It tells us more about the purveyors of the panic than anything else.

And the next time this happens, they won't have learned a thing.

409 Sorry just now getting around to reading the WaPo article.

A few really odd things in there.

Consider:
The article spawned protests and vandalism, and the university quickly suspended all Greek system activities until the beginning of next semester and put out a call for zero tolerance of sex assault

Really we have to put out a call for zero tolerance of sexual assault? I'm pretty sure most places have that already, it's why it's a felony.

Jackie said she never wanted to go to U-Va. Graduating near the top of her high school senior class of 700, she had planned to attend Brown University. She dreamed of pursuing a career in medicine like her childhood hero, Patch Adam

So...uhhh she wanted to be like her hero, a crazy person. No further comment.

"An advocate is not supposed to be an investigator, a judge or an adjudicator," said Renda, a 2014 graduate who works for the university as a sexual violence awareness specialist

Ok, I get that kinda. But here's the problem. Sometimes you will find someone who's just crazy/delusional/lying, whatever (indeed, the WaPo article cites research that says that 2-8% of rape claims may be false). If you simply accept whatever someone says to you at face value you may actually do more harm than good.
See also: This case. Since no one thought critically the lie got bigger and bigger until it's quite literally national news.

Listen I have a M-I-L who lies, a lot. She's claimed abuse before* for various reasons (attention, anger, revenge, etc.) If we just took all this at face value, we'd do catastrophic harm to all parties.

*Some people may say "WTF? You didn't look into this." Let me put it this way, we have. But there isn't a person in the family who hasn't been a target of her claims, me, my wife, my sister and father in law. So yeah we took them seriously, but also knew to stop back and say "let's verify before we act." Because acting without using heads is a bad thing. (FWIW, we changed her meds, things are better now.)

413 If you are creating a legend, you must weave within the story a plausible train of events that are not obviously false or can be proven to be false.
For instance, if your firearms were lost in a canoeing accident you should create a history that includes canoeing lessons, documentation of canoe ownership, a history of taking canoe trips and doing so while transporting firearms. Try to arrange to insure your canoe and document an unfortunate accidental sinking.
And then practice the legend! As you are nodding off at night recite all the details. Let the legend become reality. Make the story real even when they break out the battery and cables.
This one fell apart because the facts outside the legend did not match.

'The entire first paragraph of the "apology" reeks of "It may not have been true, but look at all the good it did."'

I'm finding it creepier and creepier, the attitude of many on the left toward truth.

If you honestly believe that Michael Brown was executed while cooperating with the police officer, then you're right to be outraged! If you look at all the evidence that that's bullshit and you honestly believe that of course The Man would fake that evidence up all neat and tidy, then, ditto. It's the people who *don't care* if he behaved exactly as Wilson testified, who still yell Hands Up, Don't Shoot! who scare me.

Ditto here. Well, it's not important if it's strictly true, say some "activists." Oh no? How much press would this have gotten if this piece had been published as thought-provoking fiction? Roughly none.

And as for the sociopaths who think that insisting on the truth is being pro-rape: No. These fuckers are - because every time a woman lies about rape and they say, "Well, that's *her* truth," they encourage people to disbelieve an ACTUAL rape victim!

Oh there is a ton.

MIL may have been bipolar (we'll never know for sure now.)

Ran off in her 20s, car surfed before it was cool, fell off, spent quite some time in a coma (The actual details of the accident are sketchy, but it involved a car and as I understand it no actual crash, but that may have been a misunderstanding)

The thing about Traumatic Brain injuries is sometimes you get better, then years later age catches up with you a lot faster than it would have otherwise.

So age sets in, coordination starts to get hard, memory goes faster than it should, that kind of thing.

You adapt, improvise and overcome.

Read this idiotic sentence over carefully and see if you can actually understand it. Try to diagram it.

As much as I can untangle out of that mess.

If Jackie's story is untrue, you should still believe Jackie. Or else you are disbelieving her(is that even a word?). Which means that you are not believing her, which would be wrong but would be right if she is not telling a true story, or is telling an untrue story.
