Rolling Stone: Hey, About That BS Rape Story...
Well, well, well. Don't actually click that link as it goes to Rolling Stone and they don't deserve any more hits.
To Our Readers: Last month, Rolling Stone published a story titled "A Rape on Campus" by Sabrina Rubin Erdely, which described a brutal gang rape of a woman named Jackie at a University of Virginia fraternity house; the university's failure to respond to this alleged assault – and the school's troubling history of indifference to many other instances of alleged sexual assaults. The story generated worldwide headlines and much soul-searching at UVA. University president Teresa Sullivan promised a full investigation and also to examine the way the school responds to sexual assault allegations. Because of the sensitive nature of Jackie's story, we decided to honor her request not to contact the man she claimed orchestrated the attack on her nor any of the men she claimed participated in the attack for fear of retaliation against her. In the months Erdely spent reporting the story, Jackie neither said nor did anything that made Erdely, or Rolling Stone's editors and fact-checkers, question Jackie's credibility. Her friends and rape activists on campus strongly supported Jackie's account. She had spoken of the assault in campus forums. We reached out to both the local branch and the national leadership of the fraternity where Jackie said she was attacked. They responded that they couldn't confirm or deny her story but had concerns about the evidence. In the face of new information, there now appear to be discrepancies in Jackie's account, and we have come to the conclusion that our trust in her was misplaced. We were trying to be sensitive to the unfair shame and humiliation many women feel after a sexual assault and now regret the decision to not contact the alleged assaulters to get their account. We are taking this seriously and apologize to anyone who was affected by the story. Will DanaPerhaps it is a pre-emptive response to this?

AosHQ is a powerful blog. People know people who know people -- some important, rich, influential people. Let's see if some of Ace's prestige, or Gabe's connections, or Jonah Goldberg or VDH or CW Cooke or Erik Erickson or anybody can reach out to legitimate money interests (Palin? Trump? Koch?) who are also disgusted with the GOPe and start a legitimate grass-roots third-party movement at the local level. (For the record, I'm not necessarily endorsing any of these folks for public office, but can you say they're worse than what we've got?)
Not everywhere, but start SOMEWHERE and build it. It might take a few election cycles to sufficiently grow to national stature; meanwhile, the newly-formed Ewok Party is electing mayors and dogcatchers all over the place, building an organizational structure to launch a viable repeal-everything candidate in 2024 or 2028.
You can't "reform" the Republican Party. We've been trying that for a generation, and it doesn't worked. Move on. This is a compromise between "Please sir can I have another" and "Let It Burn." I'd happily volunteer for this Ewok army, and so would millions of others.
The only guy I know of who's actively boots-on-the-ground is Truman North, and I have tremendous respect for his valiant efforts despite impossible odds.

Full disclosure: I earned my master's degree at UVA back in the day. There are a lot of old money alums at the school and, I guess, at that fraternity (not me for either the money or the frat). College binge drinking is a huge problem. Huge. Doing this crap to be admitted into certain frats or societies is a form of hazing. And it happens every weekend and most colleges. Every weekend.
So, back to rape story, a girl gets smashed at a party, wakes up with her panties missing, notes various injuries, remembers nothing, and realizes: rape. Has no freaking idea who did it or how many did it to her. Maybe reports it, gets tested for STD's, pregnancy, and HIV, maybe not. Or, maybe she is totally horrified and/or sort of remembers this one guy she has a crush on who later ignores her and she wants revenge and files Title IX...which SHOULD BE filed for waking up raped but not for "I had sex with Joe from Krappa Fi and he dumped me when he realized I wear Hello Kitty panties." Title IX is being majorly abused in colleges across the country with lawsuits by the expelled guys...some who have texts and witnesses to prove the sex was a hook up and consensual. Does not matter: they have a penis, so guilty, expelled.
If I had a son in college today I would be far worse than I was a few years ago (and I have been preaching about HIV since they entered kindergarten). It ain't no war on wimmen but on men. xoxo

when someone claims they were discriminated against, I never believe it anymore. When you water down "discrimination" to such a point that someone "feeling" "dissed" equals discrimination - I know longer feel sympathy for you or believe you were subject to anything.
If anything, the burden to prove you were discriminated against has become higher in my mind because I am not going to believe you without rock-solid evidence.

Note how they now use the verb "claimed." The purported rape victim, Jackie, now "claimed" that a man (a boy named "Drew") orchestrated the attack. She now "claimed" that other boys participated in the gang rape.
Then they say unequivocally that "our trust in her was misplaced."
My interpretation? They've figured out through re-reporting the story that it was a hoax. They don't say what "discrepancies" or "new information" caused them to come to this conclusion. But I'll bet they have some pretty damning stuff.
Here's what I think happened to cause this extraordinary mea culpa. I think a lawyer for the fraternity or the boys or the university came to them with hard evidence that the girl was lying. I think they then said that they were prepared to file a multi-million dollar libel suit against Rolling Stone if they didn't retract it.
Note here that these aren't public figures. These are young college aged men with a lifetime of earning potential in front of them as graduates of an elite university. The privileges that attach to false statements about public figures so long as they aren't malicious don't apply to libel of non-public figures. So the chances of making out a claim for libel are significantly greater. And the damages to these young men could be very high indeed. Frankly, a class action on behalf of the hundreds or perhaps thousands of members of UVA fraternities against Rolling Stone wouldn't be out of the question.
So... when you read "we are taking this seroiusly and apologize," you should interpret that as "please please please don't sue us."

Even Jackie's friends don't believe her story now. Read the Washington Post article. This week, for the very first time, Jackie revealed the real name of "Drew" -- her date and the guy who supposedly took her to the party (that never happened) at the frat house and directed the entire rape.
The guy Jackie named never met her, never was a member of the frat, never worked at the aquatic center, and of course never dated or raped Jackie.
Also, one of Jackie's friends who was quoted in the RS article now says that Jackie has changed details of the rape over time. This friend says Jackie initially told her that she was raped by 5 guys at the frat house, but later increased her number of rapists to 7.

Ok, I get that kinda. But here's the problem. Sometimes you will find someone who's just crazy/delusional/lying, whatever (indeed, the WaPo article cites research that says that 2-8% of rape claims may be false). If you simply accept whatever someone says to you at face value you may actually do more harm than good.
See also: This case. Since no one thought critically the lie got bigger and bigger until it's quite literally national news.
Listen I have a M-I-L who lies, a lot. She's claimed abuse before* for various reasons (attention, anger, revenge, etc.) If we just took all this at face value, we'd do catastrophic harm to all parties.
*Some people may say "WTF? You didn't look into this." Let me put it this way, we have. But there isn't a person in the family who hasn't been a target of her claims, me, my wife, my sister and father in law. So yeah we took them seriously, but also knew to stop back and say "let's verify before we act." Because acting without using heads is a bad thing. (FWIW, we changed her meds, things are better now.)

Ran off in her 20s, car surfed before it was cool, fell off, spent quite some time in a coma (The actual details of the accident are sketchy, but it involved a car and as I understand it no actual crash, but that may have been a misunderstanding)
The thing about Traumatic Brain injuries is sometimes you get better, then years later age catches up with you a lot faster than it would have otherwise.
So age sets in, coordination starts to get hard, memory goes faster than it should, that kind of thing.
You adapt, improvise and overcome.
