You Guys Know The GOP Isn't Going To Do Anything About Obama's Amnesty, Right?

When I first proposed the idea of not inviting Obama to give the State of the Union my hope was someone would ask Boehner about it and have him say, "that's the dumbest idea I've ever heard". Alas, Mission Half Accomplished, the dream is dead, Boehner is going to invite Obama to give the State of the Union. His reasoning is cute but meaningless. Obama won't shut up if he isn't invited. Hell, he'll talk more. If you're goal is to let him damage himself not inviting him would be the way to go.

But at least the GOP is going to fight on, right? Er...

Yesterday the House GOP passed their little sham "look at how mad we are about this" bill that has no chance to see the light of day in the Senate.

Are you not entertained?

Well, you better be because that's all you're going to get.

Next week the House will pass the FY 15 Continuing Resolution to fund the government for the rest of the fiscal year which runs through September 30th of 2015. The question is...will this CR include funding for the Department of Homeland Security (which is responsible for administering the amnesty program) for the whole year or a shorter period of time (mid-March is the time being thrown around)?

Some, like Senators Mike Lee and Jeff Sessions want the House to add language to the CR that defunds or prohibits the amnesty program now and not wait until March. Honestly, I don't get this. There maybe some Senate Democrats who will support this defunding effort because they are scared after the midterms. But Harry Reid will never bring it up. He needs to be seen fighting this for his own reelection effort in 2016 when he may face Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval who won reelection last month in a landslide (with lots of Hispanic voters).

Why would you push this now instead of simply passing a very short term CR that goes until maybe the end of January? At that point you'll still have some scared Democrats but you'll have a bunch of new Republicans who ran on this issue and you'll have control of what comes to the floor?

If you push this fight now you'll lose. And then when the time comes that you might actually have enough votes to win (even liberals are worried about this) people will say, "This again? Old news. You already lost, move on".

An aside, why is the GOP pushing for a fully year CR that runs through September 30th of the 2015 in any event? They just won control of the Senate from the Democrats running on a promise to fix their broken policies. Why would you let Harry Reid and the rest of the defeated Democrats have so much influence over spending for the rest of the year? Why not pass a short term CR and then re-write it reflecting the promises you just made and won on? Oh right, the GOP isn't really interested in cutting spending and this is a way to avoid having to deal with the rubes for another year. Then they'll say, "We can't cut anything because it will hurt us going into 2016!"

Back to immigration...

I get one reason to push for a fight now is that no one trusts Boehner and McConnell to fight later. God knows I don't. But if you are going to push them to fight now, you can push them to fight in a month. Better to do it at a time when if you can get them to engage in the fight you might actually win in the end.

But of course Boehner and McConnell will be super tough come March. Right? It's not like they are trying to set this up so they can avoid a fight as long as possible and give them time to come up with another plan to avoid fighting about it. Nope, they'll be there for you....next time.

Or maybe not.

At a Thursday press conference in the Capitol, Boehner did not guarantee the House would vote to block or cut off funding from DHS once Republicans had control of both houses of Congress in 2015.

Oh. Well, maybe he's just being sly because he doesn't want to tip his hand to Obama. Yeah, I'm sure that's it.

Of course that presupposes the GOP wants to win or at least their idea of winning of wining is the same as yours. It's pretty clear they don't.

“I’m going to use my assets and resources in the new year to work with this Congress… to have a well-understood agreement about what the law should be, and how we as communities, and farm communities, and tech communities, create circumstances where we can have people be in this country and work, and where not one person is quote ‘thrown out’ or ‘deported,’” Rep. Pete Sessions, the chairman of the powerful House rules committee, told a group of Democratic legislators.

I'd be mighty upset if only a month ago I'd voted for these guys. Glad I don't have that problem.

Added: People seem to think I haven't offered a solution. I thought I was clear the short term CR/defund effort in January was the solution. I guess not. Also, I wrote a whole post on ideas on what could and should be done.

24 Interesting question, maybe I'm wrong. I'm seeing that Obama hasn't actually signed the executive orders yet, but things presumably are moving in the direction he declared already, this would seemingly short circuit all half assed/hearted GOP attempts to stop it.

But if he never actually signs it, and it goes into effect anyway, what the hell is that? Can we just go and arrest anyone caught implementing it? Not that that would ever be done.

While doing my Navy Officer coursework, I remember discussing Mai Lai at great length, and the topic of what to do if asked to follow an illegal order, i.e. murdering a village full of civilians was discussed. This is obviously a lot more serious of a topic than implemeting some imaginary sham immigration "reform", but what provisions are in place for non-political appointee government workers to defy illegal directives from their supervisors?

I don't know about Drew, but, the problem we have right now is the Congressional leadership. The GOP is a conservative party and they've won a landslide election based upon stopping Obama. The problem is with the establishment who seem now to be more worried about taking care of D.C. than the country at large.

28 Not allowing the President to give a state of the Union address is about as childish and petty an action as a legislative body of the most powerful nation on earth can do.

A state of the union address by the President is required by the Constitution, Section 2 Article 3. So let's encourage Congressional leaders to violate the Constitution, because, we can then say, "take that , Obama".

Isn't it time that Congress acted like adults? Shouldn't we be demanding that, instead of the these playgound tactics?

Holding the WH may be less important than we want to believe. The GOP held the WH for a long time from 68-2008. During that time the Dems held the House for much of it. But the biggest change to the welfare state arguably occured while the Dems held the WH and the GOP held the House.

Madison said the real power was in the House. This is prbobably still true today as it was back then - though maybe not as strong as it was then. This is a long war.

I believe significant change won't come unless we keep the House for a long period - a generation or more. When you get a president as well you can really press your gains.

But we will never change the liberal state by just winning the presidency alone. We need to control the house for a generation. The reality is that the House is much more conservative now than it was when the GOP last held it under Bush.

39 If I were Mike Lee or Jeff Sessions, here's my theory about backing a year long CR.

There are lots of things the government currently funds that Democrats want to protect. If they wait until January, they functionally can't protect them (cutting them reduces the deficit, making any funding bill eligible for reconciliation, meaning the Republicans can pass the bill without any Democrat support- and THAT means that TFG would have to veto the budget himself, something I suspect his handlers don't want him to do).

So you offer the year long CR. They have to accept defunding of DHS for this illegal amnesty (and many of them will) in exchange for keeping their pet projects going for another year.

Now it's possible I'm more devious than Lee or Sessions, but that would be my thinking, anyway.

This is incorrect. I agree it will look petty. That doesn't mean it isn't a good idea. I would love for Congress to start reasserting its power as a co-equal branch of government. Preferably it would do this by exercising its power of the purse and law making authority and eliminating the delegation doctrine.

But the SOTU address is unseemly in its current form. Petty - maybe. But why should Congress respect the President if the President doesn't respect Congress. But there is no reason why the the Capital should be a place of comity.

Word to the wise. A lot of times when the guys in the bar say they'll give you a dollar if you dance for them, after you dance for them, they don't give you the dollar. They just point and laugh.

So be sure to get that dollar upfront before you dance.

73 Get what you can through now to avoid the media circus then start
tearing it to shreds Jan. 1 (or whenever the new congress is actually
seated.)

Because that takes actively passing bills at that point, and TFG can just veto those with impunity. If you authorize a CR (and I'm actually with AtC on: Pass a f*cking budget you f*cking f*ckers) through the end of 2015, then anything you do to change it, the SCOAMT can veto and just say, "We just debated this and it was duly passed, why are they trying to go back and change it now?"

So *if* we're going to do a year-long CR, we need to get something real out of it. If we're not going to get something real out of it, then we need to do nothing (not even a CR) to "get us through to the end of the year" and then let the new Republican Congress pass a real budget in January.

That's a very different case. Most cops, even the power-mad ones, at least try to be fairly polite at the beginning of any confrontation. As long as you keep it on that level, they *usually* do as well.

107 The Republican Party is not a conservative party. It is a nationalist party, holding the Constitution supreme. Allegedly

The Democrat Party is a factionalist party and wants to treat everybody like special sheep to be herded and sheared in their own unique way. And buy votes. And they are good at this, and half the country wants this.

The present "leadership" of the Republican party is broken and stupid. They want the 'big money' to keep their phoney baloney jobs, so they cut off their nose to spite their face, and want to support Amnesty. GWB did, Jeb the Dork does, Christy the Donut does, and on, and on.

Boehner just some suntanned dork who does the bidding of the highest bidder. The faction of the Republican party that is actually Constitutional conservatives and oppose Amnesty are opposed to this path.

As much as this pains me, because it hands 'power' to the Democrats in the short term, is to break the Republican party and form a new party.

I thought this would happen after Romney lost, as he was a most modest and centrist figure, but this latest crisis might just do the trick.

And for most Americans, that is all they've ever known. So let's not permit him to do the annual awards show emcee bit, so the MSM can scream and howl. And all our allies (and enemies) can wonder what the hell is going on here, even more so than they are currently doing. Our allies , and most of the world, watch the SOTU. They also watch the Congressional response, something that also would not be televised should this idea actually be implemented.

So, sorry, I'm with Boehner on this one. Let the Marxist president stand up once again and begin to explain why he is taking Exec Action to the entire nation and most of the world to reward those who have broken our laws. Let him go on and on with his simpleton ideas regarding Israel, ISIS, etc. Let him insult the Supreme Court to their face. Let him harass and threaten the nation's police departments live.

143 The Won's electronic signature is not on the bill, says a link on Drudge. How can it be a bill without a signature? I think this is a BFD as Biden would bleat.

And, if it is not a "real"bill but a decoy amnesty duck, is this bait for the GOP to take next year for a reform bill? If so, well played, Dems.

They have said, in the past, they will not consider reform until border security bill passes first. I am going to hold them to that.

Let's not forget, this has been a problem (illegals) for over a decade. I see less here in my area since our economy dropped and e-Verify passed.

While I do not want amnesty, I want some of the reparations they send home to Mexico paid in taxes here for their care. That is they key for me: taxes. Whether they pay the taxes, like, oh, nearly half of the US, is another story. Supposedly, in sales and excise tax, they pay $10 billion...but contribute very little to taxes for their care here in USA. Per a chart, remittance is down to Mexico and Latin America, but still totals around $53.8 billion----a lot of that which should remain here, as we support them in medical, education of their children, and their comfort in jails. In fact, each of you pays upwards of $8-10 thousand a year for their support. So, what I am getting to is this: unless there is a sudden Eisenhower roll 'em out of here campaign (which we know is not going to happen), deport the felons, put them at the back of the line of legal immigrants who have applied, e-Verify their ID, make them pay taxes...all after securing the border with military. Then we'll talk, GOP.*
*This is my understanding only of how it would work in regard to taxes. I plead tardation with numbers, but, from memory and last checked (today on remittances), this is how I remember it from when I was fired up and screeching at my reps.

These scared workers Le Roi wants to come out of the shadows, well, a lot of them don't want to pay taxes, bro, which is why, in spite of the possible pretend amnesty bill that may or may not be signed, we are probably not going to see any major change in our lives. They are already on our bloated welfare systems with fake ID's. Note the states who are trying to pass laws in which welfare recipients have to work. Lots of squawking there.

145 Look, you heathens, the Scots, the Irish, the English, the Welchers, even the followers of the Prophet all get along in a diverse culture of tolerance in the beknighted Land of English Queens.

You colonials with your tribal obsessions over ethnic origin, religion, social status, gender, gender preference, and skin color would get along, one with the other, so much better with a Royal Family to guide you. But no, you and your rebellious attitude and disrespect for your betters.

You should do away with these retched elections, and choose a King to guide you. Just think of the marvelous parades you could have instead of these raucous 'demonstrations'.

150 Previous thread dump headline "liberalism is a myth"

I say (and after watching these rascals for 50 years I feel to be an expert) that REPUBLICANISM is a myth.

The Republican party is where liberal pols go when they've been rejected or rejected certain parts of the Democrat agenda.

It's where Democrats who don't have support in the REAL party go to drum up fake support to fight those bastards in the real party (I'll show 'em)

And platforms or positions that SEEM at odds with the REAL party are merely window dressing to attract the unwary and politically isolated.

And even when the Fake party makes noises as if it is four square behind the positions of the Fake party you can be sure that they won't do much of substance to thwart the REAL party in it's march to Liberal Progressive land (otherwise known as an oligarchy made up of peasants to mow your lawn and wash your clothes and transporters of goods from the slave countries producing them.

Any and all mavericks (except fake ones like John McCain) and zealots will be derided, laughed at and ignored.

The founders and the constitution never foresaw parties (another form of factions) but saw a struggle amongst like men for the things that men usually struggle over. Power, money, land, fame and influence.

The means to perpetuate that struggle whilst appearing to give a shit about those who's votes must be given the appearance of being concerned about guides them all in how they appear, what they say but you can formulate fairly accurately their true position by observation.

Let's be honest, we never had a Republic to begin with merely the appearance of one.

We can offer solutions, but the GOP will not listen. They don't have the same goals as many here.

They want it done now so there is no pressure in January when they have both house and senate. Then they can demagogue it to death without having to actually act.

The House has to act now to pull that political shenanigan while Reid is still in power.

The only benefit to a GOP house and senate is that they can keep only the super ultra extreme lefty judges off the court. Otherwise, I see no benefit.

We don't need that at all.

Like I said- if we're not going to get anything substantive out of a long-term CR, then just don't do anything. Refuse to fund the government until the next Congress has been seated.

Then you pass a real budget, for the first time in... what? 6 years?

If TFG doesn't veto that, all the better. When he does, though, then you pass single item appropriations bills- DoD first, Medicare SS second (realistically speaking), then on down the list. Anything that doesn't get funded is then TFG's fault, and harder (though far from impossible) for the MFM to cover for him.

227 Jean, Allen (maybe others), and Drew himself have it right, in that normal budget and appropriations processes offer ample opportunity for substantive and political success. Ahemm, that's the way things have been done basically forever.

Going along with CRs in general, as opposed to "regular order", has been a disastrous move from the outset, so bad it actually raises (not "begs") questions about the real inten of GOP leadership since 2009.

Unless I'm missing something, the current best move has always been obvious. Pass a CR through March. Then in the new Congress, proceed to move the regular 16 appropriations bills (I believe 8 or 10 are already done in the House) in "regular order". Meaning, in this case, according to your legislative strategic priority. DOD, HHS (with O-care repeal content to draw a veto and start that campaign of relentlessly nailing these idiots to the unfolding disaster), etc.

Folks, this isn't complicated. There is absolutely no excuse, and not ridiculous fake "strategy", that justifies not returning to the process that is not only constitutional but has always been the way Congresses and presidents wrestle over policies and priorities.

And when you do things in regular order, you remove the hallucinogenically distorted false concept of "govt. shutdown" almost completely from the picture. Make this idiotic toxic admin. and its collapsed party stand and fight for things that the country loathes.

Not. Complicated.

My maternal grandfather made eggnog every Christmas. Whole eggs, the whole shebang. He didn't drink at all, except at Christmas. He'd add a little bourbon or whatever to his drink. The eggnog was always made with no alcohol for the kiddies. It was to die for.

242 its been said here a hundred times: the GOP Congress has different interests from the voters.

We elected them to fight Progressive destruction of the country, and they think their purpose is to get re-elected.

Those different goals lead to all the cognitive dissonance here. Primary challenges are the only electoral way to kick their asses.

Byrd would have, without a doubt, not tolerated much or any of the ludicrous executive arrogance and over-reach of this idiot in the WH. When that non-recess recess appointment stunt happened? CR that goes until maybe the end of January? At that point you'll still
have some scared Democrats but you'll have a bunch of new Republicans
who ran on this issue and you'll have control of what comes to the
floor?"

This is precisely the correct approach - CR now until January and then in January fight the battle on favorable grounds.

The key to the "lets fight this out now" is that if McConnell and Boehner were interested in actually stopping amnesty, they could go all good cop/bad cop on Reid and Obama to get them to AGREE to a short-term CR, using the 'otherwise our crazies will shut down the Government next week' ploy.

But they didnt. They a) pre-announced defeat -"we wont shut down the Government" even if Obama declared himself and a horse's ass (no, a real one, not biden) co-Emperor. And b) Boehned thinks up, "whats the weakest thing we can do?"....

PS. I'm with Boehner on the SOTU stuff. Face it, it's as meaningless as the Yoho bill, red meat for suckers ... the ONLY thing that counts is to stop the danged thing.

Meanwhile, since we don't have an honest media with access to the White House, all CNN and most other MSM, including Fox are reporting , is that the President signed an EO authorizing amnesty. 345 Uncle Rick, you are sort of the exemplar fora "type" in these parts - though silly enough around the edges to possibly be a sarcastic sock. I have long noted that most of those who affect a smarmy supercilious stance on doing anything about anything show no understanding of the relevant topics, and clearly have never worked in Congress or the executive branch at reasonably high levels.

You don't seem to have much familiarity with budgeting and appropriations, politics, or strategy. Do you even know how the appropriations process works, and how Congress has (always) used it to fight (and win) with WHs of all stripes?

As I said, this situation, both politically and mechanically, is not complicated. Opponents of lawlessness (amnesty) have all the levers anyone could ever need. Power over the appropriations process (entirely, come January) and of course the long-standing strong opposition to lawlessness in the electorate.

354 The republicans admit they have no will to use the tools at their disposal to confront the president's executive action. They lost this fight, Obama won.

They should concede gentlemanly and bring the Senate-passed bill to the floor for an up-or-down vote and allow it to pass and become law. They already lost this fight, and this will free the next congress to focus on other issues instead of passing a bill that will likely be even worse than the Senate bill by the time it gets Obama's signature.

This battle is over and clearly the GOP lost. Passing the Senate bill obviates the precedent of extra-constitutional action by the president and frees congress to focus on other pressing issues.

Yup. Think they also get to DC and decide that it's pretty nice to be invited to the parties and be friends with the local movers and shakers - lobbyists, media, long-term bureaucrats/appointees, etc. They get lulled into thinking that if they just stay moderate enough they'll be able to hold onto these awesome new friends. Perfect example is McCain, who has relished his "last reasonable Republican"/maverick persona so much. Sad he didn't realize he was always their fool after they turned on him in 2008 for running against candidate boyfriend.

That assumes there is unified Republican opposition to amnesty. There isn't. It's perfect cover for the RINO contingent, who clearly control the dynamic in D.C.. 389 Solution- Shut the bitch down.

Also, put federal employees on notice they will not be receiving pay this time for staying home and watching Netflix. Offer a CR only when their lost wages result in a balanced budget.

Let Obama make the shutdown as painful as possible too.

I love immigrants. I am tired as hell of paying for their cradle-to-grave welfare once they come in.

Posted by: Brave Sir Robin at December 05, 2014 11:45 AM (5buP

Agree with your post.
Here is a question/thought however. Everyone keeps talking about this unending pool of cheap labor. Isn't that what illegals bring as long as they are under the table?

Once they are legitimized through amnesty, don't the businesses who want to hire them now have to pay workman's comp, payroll taxes, FICA, Medicare, etc.? I agree, having an instant pool of low skilled labor will depress wages,(which is why the move for increasing minimum wage). But really isn't the $1-2 lower wage seriously offset by the large increase in taxes and benefits now paid?

Additionally, many small minimum wage jobs are harder to fill because it pays more today to be on welfare.

I guess I'm trying to really see where legitimizing all these illegals is such a boon to the Chamber of Commerce that everyone keeps repeating.

2. An Italian figured out the speed of light by measuring eclipses on the moons of Jupiter

Don't forget the SEIU and Lefty plan for getting a $15.00 minimum wage. They just held a protest for this outside a downtown Denver McDonald's yesterday. It is not going away. And it will destroy these businesses if it happens.

So what? Say there is no piece of paper with Obama's signature on it. What difference will it make? He's already rented out the office space and is hiring 1000 workers to process the new green cards for the illegals.

You think Boner saying, whoa hold on a second, there's no piece of paper saying this should happen is going to stop him?

408 I guess I'm trying to really see where legitimizing all these illegals is such a boon to the Chamber of Commerce that everyone keeps repeating.

That's a great question, and one I've pondered myself. My only speculation is that the specter of ICE raids/fines/embarrassing press and other legal action is what drives this unholy alliance. I get what is in it for the D's, a permanent voting majority. And D presidents 44-180.
But, there's SOMETHING in it for big biz. There wouldn't be this much smoke w/o a fire.

409 Once they are legitimized through amnesty, don't the businesses who want to hire them now have to pay workman's comp, payroll taxes, FICA, Medicare, etc.?

_______

For the most part they already do since most illegals that work for big bidness work "legally" using fake SSNs.

But what making the illegals legal will do is give them more options, meaning they will demand higher wages. So the cheap labor won't be all that cheap anymore.

It's basic fucking logic that nobody at the Chamber of Commerce seems capable of figuring out.

The old INS raids of the 80s/90s don't exist anymore. There a better chance of a CEO getting hit by lightning than of his business getting raided by ICE.

414 here legitimizing all these illegals is such a boon to the Chamber of Commerce that everyone keeps repeating.

It raises labor costs and increases non-compliance risk for the smaller, informal non-CoC businesses which are still employing illegals. Mega-Plumbing corp. pays a little more, charges a little more and puts Joe The Plumber (who can only afford and find an illegal @Home Depot) out of business.

Obama blasts him from behind with this "executive action" crap that he will do nothing about, and he allows himself to get blasted from the front by the Jorge Ramoses of the world for opposing allowing illegals staying here even though he is doing nothing to oppose allowing illegals to stay here.

Republicans get to get blamed in the Latino community for doing something Republicans aren't doing and don't have the balls to do. Just a fucking joke. Heckuva job, Johnny.
