Republican Party Passes Meaningless Bill Designed to Trick Stupid Americans in Gruber-Like Fashion

I'm tired of the Grubering, particularly from my own alleged side.

The Yoho bill is not designed to block Obama's use of federal monies to carry out his unlawful amnesty. The Yoho bill is designed to dupe Republicans into thinking Boehner has attempted to block Obama's use of federal monies to carry out his unlawful amnesty.

It is designed to trick the Stupid American Voter.

As usual.

This has court implications as well. Boehner supposedly will sue the Administration over its power-grabs. However, Congress has the power itself to delimit executive overrreach -- through its power of the purse, of course.

The Supreme Court may very well decline to hear any kind of challenge to Obama's executive overreach on the theory that Congress has in fact implicitly blessed -- constructively "passed" -- Obama's executive laws by its tacit acceptance of them.

If Boehner really wants to prevail in his lawsuit, he has to show that Congress is in fact using all of its own power to block Obama's executive overreach, and this power is yet insufficient, thus necessitating the entry of the third co-equal branch into the dispute.

But Boehner is not doing that. Boehner is in fact showing he'll do absolutely nothing at all to stop Obama.

Given that, the Supreme Court will naturally take the position that they are not being called into a bona fide constitutional dispute, but rather a faked-up political con, and thus have no real justification for ruling on the matter.

Boehner can fool a few low-information conservatives but he can't fool Scalia and Thomas.

Ever get the feeling that things are going just so damned seemingly stupid for a purpose?

I have thought for a long time, as other commenters mentioned here last week, that Obama was a component to a punishment coming to the United States for its wickedness and excess.

Watching how the supposed opposition continually caves in the face of Leftist incompetence and fecklessness, one cannot help but get the feeling that all this is supposed to happen.

70 I don't get it. Just send the SOB a continuing resolution for each department of government as a separate bill and make the president explain why he vetoed them all, even the ones where there was no disagreement, because he couldn't get what he wanted on a particular one out of the set. Then keep sending him each of the ones where there is no disagreement until he signs them.

Even the press can't spin that as Congress shutting things down. What is so difficult about this? You might have to wait until you have both houses of Congress but that is coming soon enough.

Of course I know the answer. The Republican establishment guys are happy with what Obama did and we wasted our votes putting more Republicans in office. Either these guys shape up or it is third party time with a vengeance. This is their last chance and they only got it because Obama is a truly execrable POS...

84 The Devil went down to Washington...
She was looking for a soul to steal...
She was in a bind, because of her fat behind...
So with the media she made a Deal...

When she came upon this young man...
Kinda Libertarian but kinda not
So the Devil went to the vote stump..
and said Cruz let me tell ya what...

I guess that you don't know it... but I'm a politician too...
and if you care to take a dare.. I'll run an election gainst you...
Now you make a pretty good speech boy, but give the Devil her due,
I'll bet all the US Gold, aginst voters Souls
'Cause I think I'm better than you'

Well the boy said my names Teddy
and it may be a sin...
But I'll take that bet and your gonna regret...
Because the voters are more pissed than they've ever been...

Teddy, get your Campaign tight, and give speeches really hard
'Cause Hell's broke loose in the Senate, and Reid has stacked the cards
And if you win this country will have a fighting chance...
But if you loose, its a Statist dance....

The Devil tried to make her case, and the speeches started to blow
And Fire flew from the media, as lies they started to sow..
And she gave a speech about purse strings, and she made an evil hiss..
And the media just joined right in, and it sounded somthing like this...

When the Devil finished, Teddy said,
'Well you lied a whoppin ton...
But sit right next to your walker there
And let me show you how its done...

Fire on the Border, run illegal run
Hillary doged sniper fire, from a gun...
Chickens more expensive, cause the Fed makes dough
Granny does your Husband lie... yo child, yo...

The Devil bowed her head because she knew that she'd been beat...
She laid the countries power, at the ground, at Teddy's Feet...
Teddy said, Devil just go away, we don't you round here again'
Cause I told you once, you stupid Bitch, Americas the best thats ever been....

This is where it may fail. My reading of Gruber is that they wrote the ACA that way to trick the smart American voter. Gruber thought that voters were too stupid to agree to such an amazingly good idea as Obamacare, true, but he also thought they were smart enough to recognize Obamacare as something they disagreed with if it had been written in a straightforward manner.

Boehner really is assuming that voters aren't smart enough to see what he's doing. Despite my Tom Harkin snark above, Boehner isn't doing anything convoluted, just stupid.

I'm not. He did. As did his campaign manager and everyone watching as it was happening.

>Most voters questioned in the poll say neither candidate bears any responsibility for the partial government shutdown, but of the 13% who pointed fingers, 47% blame Cuccinelli and only 7% blame McAuliffe. And McAuliffe leads Cuccinelli by 15 points among likely voters affected by, or know someone affected by, the shutdown.

>The shutdown is definitely motivating some voters against Cuccinelli, who already had a Tea Party problem with Independents and business-minded Republicans, said Quentin Kidd, director of the Wason Center.

http://tinyurl.com/ldhomhk

There were article after article like this during the election, many quoting Cuccinelli or his campaign team, noting that VA was particularly susceptible to the shutdown because of its proximity to DC.

I'm ok with a shutdown now, I don't see it helping but I don't see it doing much for us either.

214 Umm, ok, I'll stick my head up and say this.

So the House sends an official note to Obama by way of a bill that they don't like his exec. order on immigration.

Why? Because until Jan. they have no power. ANYTHING they send to the Senate gets thrown again into the circular file.

This is exactly like the 50 times the House passed a repeal of Obamacare and Harry Reid tossed it in the can in the men's room.

This simply gets their house members on record as wagging a finger at Obama. It's symbolic, like a lot of the stuff done in Washington.

When January comes, we will then see who is serious. Yes, they can send continuing resolutions, appropriation bills, etc. but those have to be passed by the Senate...which is controlled by guess who right now.

And if he throws those in the can, all you'll hear is how the Republicans shut down the govt. blah blah blah, because Reid will be who the MSM run to with the mics....

I agree with you, that is what they'd like to do. It won't work. Schumer's shown the drift of the wind. In 2016 Democrats will run against Washington DC. They'll blame Obama for failing the promise. They'll equate society with big federal government. They'll claim centralized planning will share the prosperity, except Obama and the Republicans screwed it up. They'll run the Obama 2008 message without Obama. And Republicans will be left giving the John Kerry moan: "I voted for freedom, before I voted against it"

Cooch was already going down before the shutdown and national republicans were being stupid as usual with Virginia (see Gillespie).

The shutdown predictions about this November from liberal republicans never came to pass because there is no lasting damage with a shutdown. But Boehner is stuck on this stupid logic and is refusing to fight the Democrats. Any lawsuit will be laughed out of court.

The only power the congress has to effectively stop this is to NOT GIVE THEM THE FUNDS!

I gave you one article. As I said there are many. If you want to find one with quotes from Cuccinelli and his team then google Cuccinelli shutdown and read yourself.

I don't know why some of you deny this hurts Republicans. Shutdowns always have. Professional election watchers like Sean Trende note this all the time. Sometimes the damage is worth it and sometimes there are other circumstances that overwhelm it like Obamacare but they are always a negative for Republicans.

As I said, this time I am for it although I would rather wait until January when we control both Houses but its time to put a stake in the ground. And at least then we can have a united Congress to fight Obama.

In a way I am with you. I doubt the shutdown hurt the GOP, though I doubt it actually helped. But that is the point, its sort of neutral. Sure there may be a few casualties, but there will also be GOP winners. Let's assume it is small loss for the GOP - then do it. Its the only way to cut something.

I'll give the Dems credit. They actually took a risk when they had the power. Sure it may have cost them for a generation, but they took that risk. If we are confident in our policies we should do the same.

If we truly believe that Obamacare is the drag on our economy that it is, then it is worth a 120 day shutdown to eliminate.

No one said just voting would save us. Certainly not the AoSHQ bloggers. Getting better people in place improves our ability to make opportunities to get better and to take advantage of opportunities as they arise.

For example, with a Republican-led Senate and House, we could have exempted more people from the ACA last year when those competing bills were running around codifying what the President claimed he meant.

That sort of thing will still happen. But this blog has been honest with you that the process will be one of blood, sweat, toil, and tears.

You really don't understand what is going on...

They are setting spending for NEXT year, right now.

Once that bill passes, they will NOT revisit it... it will be law...

And even IF the House passes something later... there are not enough Repub votes in the Senate, to over ride a Veto of the law, which would supercede the existing spending bill, they are voting on right now.

So they therefore CEDE the Power of the Purse...

I don't think DC is going to change until the states start rebelling. The establishment elite has complete control of the fed now. We can send good people to congress till the cows come home, but the deep-seated corruption that is in DC will stomp them down every time.

Having said this, I will say that I'll watch to see what happens to, oh, around April or May to see if I might be wrong. But something tells me I'm right.

It is time to gain strength for the real fight ahead, not to go whining off to Doomsville, farhting meekly in a corner sucking your thumb and weeping.

So by them passing NEXT year's spending now is not a problem? They are doing this sham voting to try and cover for that yearlong spending bill with four months of funding for homeland security, so they can try to hand out all the amnesty cards they can before funding is taken away from them.

They are being stupid dumbasses trying to do this crap now instead of waiting until January, ONE MONTH, to pass spending bills. I think we can shut down the government until the GOP takes the senate then.

Until then, any funding bill allowing Obama to enact his dictatorship is defacto aiding him.

Thank you for your service, sir. I do not recall calling anyone in our great military a coward. In fact, I do not recall calling any moron a coward.

I do recall calling pessimistic, temper tantrum toddlers, railing at the GOP, whiners. If you are a-whining, then you are a "whiner." There is not a damn thing anyone can do until January. If, after a certain time, the GOP continues to bend and dilly-dally, I will join you in whining. In 2015.
My father was a WWII Marine. I would never, ever, call anyone in service a coward. No, I did not "serve" in this country. I am a RN, however, and I have saved lives, whether this counts or not. I am a mother who gave birth to two sons who vote conservative. I think that counts, right?

If my lecture woke you up from your pessimism, good. That was the point. Never give up. And thank you again for your service to this country. xoxo

322 I don't know why some of you deny this hurts Republicans.

Because it didn't. It objectively did not hurt the GOP. Even in the polling at the time it wasn't hurting them. Your evidence only shows a small part of the polling population (about 6% of those polled) even blamed Cuccinelli for it. And as others have said, he was going down before the shutdown even happened. Correlation, causation, etc. And that's the only actual example you can even bring up.

Yes, I'm aware that hysterical pundits shriek and tear their clothes when the topic comes up. They just have no evidence or factual support for their concern. It just didn't hurt any.

348 I'm not sure. Yes, this is theater, but it may be relevant theater after all.

The Republicans need to show, as I understand it, that there isn't a political solution available (so SCOTUS can't just say "it's a political problem"). The simplest, straightforward solution is to pass a law making it clear that Obama's construction of the existing law is wrong... but the law can't pass, because Dems will filibuster it and Obama would veto. (That's what this bill is.)

If SCOTUS steps back and says "not our fault Yoho didn't pass", they are in effect saying that the President can do whatever he wants--provided he can find some friendly lawyer to bless it--*unless* a 2/3 supermajority of Congress specifically overrides him. That would change Congress's power from "passing laws" to "able to veto laws under extraordinary circumstances".

But the *attempt* to pass Yoho might still help, by showing that Republicans made a good faith effort to stop the abuse through existing political means.

Not saying SCOTUS will take this up, or that they'll do anything to stop Obama, but I can see this scenario playing out this way.

And so it goes.

They were not politicians so much as brilliant psychologists. They understood the failure of human nature with regards to power better than anyone else who preceded them and constructed a government to address that failure.

That it's in tatters today merely reinforces their wisdom.

409 JJ @364...every Dem who voted for Obamacare was defeated last month. There are 32 GOP governors out of 50. The country is turning redder. It will not happen overnight, but I see, with the last election, some hope. People, the el stupids, who voted (D) in 2008 and 2012, are graduating from college and not finding jobs. Black people in this country have the highest unemployment since 2000. Some are waking up who really thought The Won would give them free stuff forever.

It took years, yes some of Bush's second term which I hated, to mess this country up. It is not going to be fixed overnight. The illegal situation has been around, oh, for a decade? I mean, I have been reading, since I woke up on 9/11, about mooslem prayer blankets found on Arizona ranches in 1998.

And, as I am now "pollyanna," well, it is better than living in doom and getting soggy in my tears. When I see solutions like "don't vote GOP" or yada it makes me a little peeved...as that worked so well in getting Barky elected, no? Or, when I see, "third party" stuff, well, it sounded good, and now is the time to do it if it is going to happen (it won't. See: Whigs). I went to some Tea Party meetings. Yes! Me! The resident Rino or whatever names I have endured. Whatever. I love morons. I do. I just hate the roll over and whine fests. xoxo

457 I am afraid that we are in a vicious circle--the more the base gets disgusted, the less it contributes time and money, the greater the effect of the corporatists who want cheap labor, open borders, etc. They will always contribute for that is how they get access in Dem

Where we are probably heading is Argentina or Venezuela where an alliance of crony rich and the poor in the electorate earn livings by looting the shrinking productive middle class. NYC has a similar arrangement and look how well the middle class are doing there!

462 Congress can do a lot to stop Executive overreach. One easy way would be to go nuclear and eliminate the Fillibuster until the end of Obama's term. The extremist wing of the Ocrat minority would be shut out of any legislative process.

Some of the more moderate Ocrats, facing the choice of being part of an ineffective minority, or part of a common sense productive majority, might join the GOP to help kill any vetos -- start with something popular, like Keystone...

Get the nation conditioned to how the Ohouse and extreme Ocrat leadership stands for not getting anything done... Which is why Congress never passed a budget, or brought very few House passed bills up for a vote, or consideration.

The OCrat extremists have earned the right to wear their Olbatross... Give them plenty of opportunities to display their silliness, lack of common sense and decency as possible.
