Gallup: Highest Level of Americans Ever Report Skipping Health Care Due to Costs; Hardest Hit? The Middle Class
One in three Americans has put off seeking medical treatment in 2014 due to high costs, according to Gallup -- the highest percentage since Gallup began asking the question in 2001. Thirty-three percent of Americans have delayed medical treatment for themselves or their families because of the costs they’d have to pay, according to the survey.... The hardest-hit: the middle-class. Americans with an annual household income of between $30,000 and $75,000 began delaying medical care over costs more in 2014, up to 38 percent in 2014 from 33 percent last year; among households that earn above $75,000, 28 percent delayed care this year, compared to just 17 percent last year. The lowest-income section, some of whom can take part in Medicaid and who are more likely to qualify for significant premium and cost-sharing subsidies on an Obamacare exchange, are less likely to delay care this year.... It’s a remarkable shift: after Obamacare’s redistribution of wealth, the middle class is actually delaying medical care due to high costs at a higher rate than the poorest section of the country, which is highly subsidized by taxpayers.Obama came into office to take money from groups that didn't vote for him and give it to groups that voted for him. On a more serious note, my father-in-law has been avoiding seeing the doctor due to the expense for pain and unexplained bruising in his upper leg that has been slowly moving. This despite his half-brother having a leg amputated due to blood clots a few years ago. Needless to say, Mrs. SoCon and I are dreading that phone call that we know might occur sometime sooner rather than later.

My GP charges $800 for the routine annual checkup! A few months ago, I went to an immediate-care clinic for an obviously infected animal bite. In a visit lasting less than one minute, the doctor merely looked at it (did not touch or test,) prescribed antibiotic, and billed me $206! The biggest problem in health care today is price inflation at the provider.

I have pretty decent insurance and when I picked up my one prescription last week, the pharmacist told me it would be cheaper if I used the store's pharmacy card rather than my insurance. When I say cheaper, I mean it was almost exactly half the cost. Needless to say, I went with that option.
I know, I know anecdata but still. It made me wonder a. just how much of a subsidy those with insurance are paying to those on Medicaid, etc. and ii. just how much of a sucker I am for still working and striving and trying (badly) to take care of myself.

The only time I actually go to a doctor for treatment is when something bad (and, no, not the flu, or a cold, or a headache, etc.) is happening.

Someone (Trump, maybe) should publicly call out people who do this, and very publicly make them a bet. If civilization has not come crashing down due to climate change at the end of the period specified, then the person who made the announcement will donate a large chunk of money to the charity of Trump's choice. And vice versa if civilization is suddenly in bad shape due to climate change. Publicly pressure the person (which Trump is good at) in public until they either accept the bet or renounce their claim. And then keep the bet in the public eye for the duration.
I bet it would shut a lot of these alarmists up...

I have a friend who went the concierge route a couple of years ago and she loves it. She doesn't mind the $1800 she had to pay up front, because of the amount of attention she has received. Visits with the doctor or physician's assistant last at least an hour. The first visit they mailed her something like ten pages of health history and questionnaire to fill out , then the doctor sat and reviewed each item one by one with her. She has had numerous tests(yes, some of those are probably in the realm of unnecessary, but they are tests that would be diagnostic in the insurance world, for which she is paying far less). She has been seen by a licensed nutritionist for several visits, who designed a program for her to reduce her weight(she looks fantastic now), which reduced her blood pressure and blood lipids/tryglycerides. She goes in three or four times a year for blood testing to see if she is maintaining. One visit demonstrated much higher blood sugar, she then met again with the nutritionist who pointed out that she was eating too much fruit...subsequent blood test was back to normal.
She says what she likes the best is the time she gets with each professional. She doesn't feel like they are not listening to her or they are simply on a production line. She has 24 hr. access to a professional at the office for advice on sudden symptoms, etc.
She maintains an insurance policy to cover catastrophic events, surgeries, etc. but really likes the $150 she pays per month(first year, all money up front, thereafter monthly ) as she feels she couldn't begin to get the care she gets at the cost she pays if she had straight up insurance.

It really has nothing to do with price or tax exempt status. It has everything to do with effectiveness. One bottle of 50 will last me 2-3 years. I only use it when asperin or OTC drugs don't work anymore.

She has to find a doc that takes Medicaid. More and more doctors are dropping out because they can't stay in practice on Medicaid's reimbursement. And once you become known as a Medicaid doc, the word spreads in the hood, and it's not long before that is the majority of your patient load.

Yes, she has a huge deductible.....I call that catastrophic coverage now, because you still have to pay thousands of dollars before insurance kicks in. But once it does, then they cover hospital charges, doctor charges, etc. at 80%, which you would need for say a heart surgery, gall bladder, cancer treatment, etc.

I'm not sure that is available any more - but maybe I'm wrong. I had it when I was young and in grad school.

You are right in that it may have defined his campaign. In a campaign about Obamacare, he could have talked about it - though certainly the media would want to only talk about his socon issues. Of course, I think that would have been a plus (obviously others differ).
I didn't necessarily agree with his no-tax plan for manufacturers (because I think it should appply to all businesses), but at least it would appeal to blue collar workers, which Mitt was not going to do.
I didn't think he was a great candidate, just the best in a crappy field (once it was down to Mitt and Santorum). And I thought he was the better candidate against Obama whereas Mitt was not (because of Obamacare). I think Mitt would have been a better candidate against Obama in 2008.

I'm sure it's the same chemical formula. I have just found that the shock of a sudden dose of 800 mlg's is best for my purposes. And I repeat that I only use it when all the other over-the-counter drugs quit working. The same thing might not work for you.

I don't know for sure, but I doubt it would be exactly like the Major Medical of old. The ACA demands that all policies have all this extraneous coverage, which is what drives the premiums up even if the policy already had a high deductible. Men can' t pay less than women, no preexisting condition clause etc. So , in short, no.

Yes, I remember his actual record. Yes, I have doubts about his conservatism. But I know he would not appoint someone to the court who would defend Roe v. Wade - which is something I cannot say about Mitt. I also know he was outspoken about Obamacre - and was credible on it, something Mitt lacked due to Romneycare and all his talk about 50 state waivers.
In a race against Obamacare, I thought he would have been a better candidate than Mitt. I can't prove it of course, but we know Mitt lost a winnable election and we know he had faults (47%, etc.). Would Santorum have won - I have no idea. Would he have performed worse than Mitt - possible, though I doubt it.
Mitt was the wrong candidate for the election he was in. Santorum was the other choice. It was a weak field. I wish others had thrown their hat in the ring. But hopefully it killed the Mitt candidacy once and for all.
I actually grew to like Mitt much more than when the race started. But I was always concerned with the type of judges he would appoint.

A Michigan woman returned home today after being released on personal recognizance bond after she was arrested by Secret Service for carrying a purple and silver 9mm handgun on her hip in front of the White House during a protest.
She was charged with carrying a handgun without a license(although previous articles claimed it was unregistered, ammo was unregistered, etc.(remember this is DC).
The DC judge remanded her to the custody of her uncle with the stipulation she receive mental health care, participate in a mental health treatment plan and take any prescribed medications.
Her family said that she had taken a CPL class in Michigan, but did not know if she ever pursued a CPL license. Her family said she carried all the time.......

Yes, I remember his actual record. Yes, I have doubts about his conservatism. But I know he would not appoint someone to the court who would defend Roe v. Wade - which is something I cannot say about Mitt. I also know he was outspoken about Obamacre - and was credible on it, something Mitt lacked due to Romneycare and all his talk about 50 state waivers.
In a race against Obamacare, I thought he would have been a better candidate than Mitt. I can't prove it of course, but we know Mitt lost a winnable election and we know he had faults (47%, etc.). Would Santorum have won - I have no idea. Would he have performed worse than Mitt - possible, though I doubt it.
Mitt was the wrong candidate for the election he was in. Santorum was the other choice. It was a weak field. I wish others had thrown their hat in the ring. But hopefully it killed the Mitt candidacy once and for all.
I actually grew to like Mitt much more than when the race started. But I was always concerned with the type of judges he would appoint.

The thing is, Santorum started out as a pro-choice Republican that was against Right to Work laws. He wasn't quite the rock ribbed conservative many gave him credit for.
Whatever his true convictions, Santoum conservatism would have turned off more than just the "middle" I think many Republicans would leave the Party if the focus was going to be on abortion and birth control. I just don't believe there's this huge voter base of super religious voters that sits out elections unless Republicans turn up the abortion dial.
Santorum lost his last Senate race by nearly 20 points in his home state, that's enough of a test run to tell me were were looking at a train wreck that had implications beyond just the Presidential race.

Its not that I disagree - just don't know why you are bringing it up?
My point was Mitt could win nationally - evidenced by his loss.
I think Santorum and his populism, clear ability to speak out againt Obamacare, and his pro-life bona fides would have made him a better candidate. Obvious, McAdams and others think socon policies are negatives. I just disagree and I don't think there is a lot of evidence to support McAdams on that belief.
Its old news - so it doesn't matter. I brought it up because someone said something about populism. And I do think conservatives should adopt a lot of populist type policies - chiefly going after corporate cronyism.
2016 will produce a much better field. Onward and upward.

You're certainly onto something here. Notice that the most crass sort of populism by the leftis adored, while if it occurs on the right, there's a sudden out break of elitist denunciation. What does it say though that Romney crushed Santorum in the primaries? And that Santorum dropped out before he faced his own state of PA in the primary because he was going to lose to Romney? He didn't want the humiliating loss.
Did Santorum win a single state that wasn't a caucus?
I don't think either were Romney or Santorum were strong candidates, but I have absolutely zero doubt that Romney would have outperformed Rick Santorum.
If Santorum was more mainstream on social issues, I think he really could have been a good option and did seem to have a better connection to working class people, but he had some really weird stances that he only seemed to double down on.
