Oil Price Effects
The big losers from falling oil prices include several countries that are not friends of the US and its allies, such as Venezuela, Iran, and Russia. These countries are heavily dependent on their oil revenue to support their governments’ spending – especially massive transfer programs. Even at $75 or $80 a barrel, these governments will have a difficult time financing the populist programs that they need to maintain public support.

I was completely ambivalent about the thing in Ferguson. Not at all on board with what the protesters were about until they started burning and looting. THEN I really started to sympathize with their problems. Sympathy oozing from every pore because, Hey, they're burning and looting so obviously this is super serial and I should feel awful about the fact that I am a white person. Now, after reading about protesters in Seattle terrorizing some children who just wanted to sing Christmas songs for the tree lighting ceremony, my goodness! I have even MORE sympathy for these poor souls who only want justice. Because burning, looting, and terrorizing children who never heard of the sainted criminal thug Mike Brown is just sooo damned inspiring. Yup, I now support these protesters completely.

One possibility is to "burn" this "waste" in yet another reactor (perhaps a slightly different design). The waste is radioactive, and gets hot when enough of it is brought together (just like in current reactors), so the heat could be used to boil water to make steam to turn turbines ... just like in current reactors.

Yucca Mtn: a real high percentage of "nuclear waste" is really mildly-exposed material like used handlers' suits, that could be more safely disposed by burning except for A Certain Agency. And used fuel rods can be re-charged, so to speak, in a kind of reactor whose name we aren't allowed to speak anymore. I have 'em all too. The Brosnan ones are well done, and "Goldeneye" is quite good, but he could have been given better stories.
If you want a good Brosnan spy movie, try "The November Man" which just came out on disc. He plays a retired CIA operative who comes out of retirement for one more mission. The wife and I enjoyed it a bunch.

Star Wars and Empire imply a fictional landscape that expands faster than it is filled. Alec Guiness mentioning the Clone wars was more of a tease than a promise.
It's the reason that the guy that made Samurai Jack (each show had as much concept work as any sci-fi pilot) did so well with the material.
Star Trek Into Darkness took all the idioms of that show and turned them up to 11. The die-hard fans might enjoy Kirk being extra Kirky and Spock being extra Spocky, but a stranger to the series might know better.

This guy's hypothesis is that the media focused on these cases precisely because they knew damn well Zimmerman and Wilson acted in self defense and things would not go well for the pro-Martin and pro-Brown crowd. That's what they want. If Zimmerman and Wilson were as obviously guilty and racist as the black racists and left wing loons claim they are and were tried and convicted, well, that would prove America has changed since the 1950's and blacks can obtain justice. That's the last thing the media wants.
The Dems need 95% of the black vote. Even a loss of 10% would change the face of national elections. So the Dems have to keep the blacks on the plantation for at least the next few election cycles. After that the Hispanic vote will make up for it and they can kick the blacks to the curb. But until then, they've got to keep them riled up and angry and convinced that white AmeriKKKa is out to get them. And the media is the PR arm of the D party and so devotes itself to exploiting cases like this.
The media knows damn well Wilson acted in self defense. They're grubering their stupid base.

Maybe. Possibly for ITAS, you can worm your (undeserved) way onto that show... it's not all Laurence Olivier. But Pioneers of TV is a documentary that looks back to the 50's for truly groundbreaking shows and performers. More recent stuff, post 70's has to bring something special to the table to get included, there's not that many. On this episode (comedy) the line up included... Johnathon Winters, Robin Williams, Dick Van Dyke, Cloris Leachman, Jimmie Walker, Jerry Seinfeld and Michael Richards (recent show) and ... Tina fucking Fey?

Carol, you can also pack roasted tomatoes with roasted garlic, basil and olive oil in jars. Process them and then spread it on bread. Oh my goodness so good.

It was a 4 bedroom house. The parents and the girls had 2 of the bedrooms and the boys were in bunk beds in the other rooms. (Two bathrooms - which would be much more of a problem with 10 girls and 2 boys.) I remember one of the boys said when he moved out into an apartment of his own, he luxuriated in the privacy and quiet for a few days -and then he started freaking out. It was too quiet. He said he actually missed his brothers yelling and fighting.

Last week I went to Hannaford's because I've never been in one
it's relatively new in Massachusetts. The deli counter had smoked
Gruyere cheese now that is my new favorite for cheeseburgers. I
went to Stop Shop Wednesday to buy some steaks that SS
had it. I bought half pound sliced thin. Man behind counter told me
smoked Gouda is even better.

The ones I love are the deep sea ones. There's so many freaky weird things that live in the ocean - and because they live in the ocean I don't have to worry about 10 foot long albino worms and crap like that when I'm walking in the woods. I love going to the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago - they have great exhibits, although their admission fee is expensive.

I went through that a couple years ago. Her birthday was a little over a week before thanksgiving, so it was a double whammy. In hindsight it definitely had me in better shape to deal with Christmas, which was her favorite. It does get better with time.

Well, I chose to watch "Catch-22." Beginning to think the critics were right, the novel's just about unfilmable, as there was a lot of stuff I didn't think quite made sense. On the other hand, it *is* surprisingly funny in spots.
Will definitely watch "From Russia With Love" tomorrow night. Thanks to all with info and tips on the Bond flicks. Yeah, I've a hunch I'll be surprised which ones I like and which I don't so much.

The quality of a pepper grinder is based on how predictable and uniform the results are. If you grind pepper into a bowl, you'll see some particles as small as dust and some good-sized chunks (particularly when grinding a Peppercorn Medley, because all the peppers are different sized going in).
I should also note that the grinders I use most often are not my best ones.

When you get to the part where you refill it, be careful not to get the Mexican oregano -- which, if labeled in Spanish, will say "entero". If you notice that looks an awful lot like "entire", that is correct -- Mexican oregano has bits of stems and flowers in it. You want "oregano leaf" -- otherwise you'll think your 'za just got back from a hike when you eat it.

They already know my qualifications. Either they like me or they don't. I'm hoping they'll at least have the common sense and decency to keep it short and ask me for new information, or let me know why they do and/or don't like me for the job.
Of course the job is at a local community college, so it could also be just another part of their "drive whitey crazy" PC program. ;-)

Actually, my oven is at oven-height, and my microwave is crammed under the countertop like ovens are normally crammed under cooktops in ranges. That particular microwave -- while not terribly expensive -- was a real find for that application. It is actually deeper than it is wide, and the entire front face is the door.

It's become more and more obvious to me IMHO, they're *not* evaluating me based on my qualifications. They're doing the same old subjective bullshit too many other interviewers do. But, I *would* very much like to write to HR, although my hunch is that they'll clam up. Lord knows how paranoid and averse to sharing this kind of information they are, because they don't want to give folks like me any excuse to sue.
Hate to sound paranoid but I *do* believe that old employers may also very well be badmouthing me, and am giving serious thought to hiring a screening service that will call them for me and find out what information they're giving out. Who knows, it might be quite the eye-opener.

I've hired a whole bunch of people over the years, mainly in the field of accounting, and there is actually a real dynamic that can come into play. You start out with one conception of the job and gradually come around to another. It's like one place I was working where we kept hiring receptionists -- we started out with "attractive, friendly, outgoing, happy"....and kept ending up with "spends all her time chatting with the vendors -- who are flirting with her in our entry hall instead of making the goddamned parts we need to keep the place running" and "comes in late every other day looking rumpled after clubbing" and "ok, which engineer is she dating now?"
And somehow that "attractive, friendly, outgoing, happy" turns into "can reliably get their ugly-ass in to unlock the doors at 8 am". Even though it's the same job.

I'm a Bond fan, but there aren't that many I'd actually call classics, as in near perfect blend of Bond formula coupled with super filmmaking. However, they're all pretty good fun if you just want some yucks, some action and whatnot. If there's one thing I give the "new reboot" Bond movies and Daniel Craig credit for... it's making me reevaluate the Moore years. I know think "jeez, you know what? those weren't so bad after all."

That's the one I first bought, then found that it didn't quite fit on the shelf where I wanted to keep it, so I exchanged it for the 4.7" version.
Zassenhaus makes four different sizes. There are also 9.4" and 11.8" models. They all have the same grinding mechanism; the only difference is the storage capacity for peppercorns. The smallest size is perfectly adequate for home use. If you own a restaurant, you'll want one of the larger ones.

Hiring/Firing is an intensely fucked-up process from both sides.....and, as government gets increasingly involved, it's getting worse. The fiancee actually was a manager of tech support at Resumix, and the cat-and-mouse games of "buzzword bingo" are just insane. I don't know of any hiring manager who isn't pissed-off at HR for filtering all the qualified people out of resumes submitted, while pushing dubious candidates who utterly collapse during interviews. And then, if you do hire someone they give you -- after all, you've got a crying need if you put yourself through the process at all -- any employee problem that ever arises afterwards is entirely your fault. It's like they want you to filter out the crazies and let them filter out the qualifications, when it really should be the other way around.

The only thing that's become annoying is the BBC-style Multi-Culti Disease; forcing ethnic characters into the mythos is so transparently obvious it's just annoying.
They could have just inserted the most obvious twist; instead of Bond going 'rogue' in Der Schweitzer Alpen, just have him wandering around in Bombay - err, excuse me, Mumbai.
No pandering, no affectation. Just a straight, hard as nails spy story with realistic cross-cultural awkwardness and eventual heroism.
They could have done a half dozen episodes of Bond in former colonies to satisfy all that zealous multi-culti fantasy shit.

Each of the Moore flicks have something to offer, but none are what I'd call classic (but, what makes a "classic" Bond flick is highly subjective). "Live and Let Die" is probably Moore's best Bond portrayal, it's his first and he he kind of makes it work. Dumb flick, though, but it has it's moments. "For Your Eyes Only" is arguably his best one, overall. "A View to a Kill" is woeful, but dammit, it has Christopher Walken and Grace Jones chewing scenery as baddies, so there's that. "Moonraker" is excrement. 'Nuff said."Octopussy" is pretty trite, also.
I rate "Goldeneye" highly. An actual classic. The last great Bond flick. Maybe even the last good one. The Daniel Craig Bond flicks are not Bond. They're charmless actioners that just go through the motions and are not even very well made. "Casion Royale" is decent enough, if you ignore Craig as Bond. "Skyfall"... oh my God. Worst. Bond. Ever.

His voice sounded better than I've heard it in years. The venue was Philadelphia's Academy of Music, which normally hosts symphony orchestras and operas, so maybe the acoustics were better than most of the places he plays.
The first concert I ever saw was Lou Reed when I was in college in 1978. The ticket cost $8.

Yes, Moore's a hammy, animated manikin who just slinks through scenes without any kind of traction to the plot.

Kevin McClory, who was producer and co-writer of Thunderball (1965), won a legal battle against Ian Fleming to make his own Bond movie. The settlement stipulated that it had to effectively be a remake of Thunderball."

Yes, you had the gadgets, the grand scheme of a (non-SPECTER) villain, and a globe-spanning plot, but that film, the varied women in the film stood in the first rank of the film's crafting.
With YOLT, the was an equal number of women, but the plot drove the film, first and foremost. It too is in my 'top 5' Bond flicks...

I USED to rubbish Moore. Back in the day when they were coming out. I've adjusted my opinion since then. Compared to the Craig flicks? Every Moore one is a classic. Even the terrible ones.

"Goldfinger" is a better film, for a number of reasons and I often
have to check myself when naming YOLT as Connery's best. FRWL is very
strong and well, Goldfinger is Goldfinger. But, for some reason I get a
bigger kick out of YOLT. Maybe it's having the cliches turned up to 11

YOLT has far better toys and settings than FRWL, and is much further removed from the book. FRWL is perhaps the best embodiment of the original novel (save Thunderball -- where the novel was more like a novelization with a collaborator).

The second job I ever had after leaving high school was for a computer maker. The boxes they were shipped in had those egg-crate foam inserts, and truckloads of the stuff would be delivered. Those of us that worked in the stockroom would pile them up in the corner of the warehouse in a manner that allowed for creation of a hidden passage that led to a cubby hole the middle of the foam pile, and we put a couple of beanbags in there, so that whoever needed or wanted to take a nap could do so without fear of being caught by the brass. The only people not allowed to use it were those known to snore loudly.

Oddly, it was released in the same year as Octopussy, IIRC. It was billed as a "battle of the Bonds" between Roger Moore and Sean Connery, but could well have been a battle of the Ian Fleming version of Bond (based on Thunderball, a project he had something to do with) and the Hollywood version of Bond (where Octopussy is a short story that has nothing to do with the film other than its title).

There isn't much contest between Octopussy and NSNA. The Connery one wins. I've never actually watched Thunderball and NSNA back to back. I should. I think my memory has been tainted by the fact that Thunderball doesn't fare as well on the small screen compared to the big screen. NSNA translates to TV better... or so I recall. Dunno.

I kinda doubt it. Niven played many roles, but 'manly with his fists' was never high on the list.
Many of his characters were 'thoughtful', and 'clever'; hell, Robert Shaw would have been a better fit... or a younger version of Cary Grant.
If not Connery, then I haven't a clue... my knowledge of English actors from that time period is somewhat lacking.
Frankly, I can't imagine anybody else stepping into the role...

Beats me why it would be considered bad. It's a great flick and very well put together. It's got a bit of everything in it and it's told really well. Lazenby was adequate as Bond. Nothing special, but he certainly is convincing in the physical scenes. A middle tier Bond. It's the one I always go back to as the best overall film. If Connery was in it how could anyone rail against it? Lazenby did Ok. I thought Savalas made a great Blofeld. Sinister and intimidating.

Yeah he had a certain... something. If the films had continued in the 60's tradition, he could have really served as a good replacement for Connery. Poor bastard had to follow Connery. But with the direction it took in the 70's it was probably just as well he did just the one. I'm not sure he could have suited the more comedic Bond flicks of the 70's. Connery almost struggled in Diamonds.
