27 My only chance to win any money in Fantasy football this season is for Martellus Bennett to have a multi-TD game. He's my "Mr. Irrelevant", a side bet we do in this league. Last guy you draft, whoever from that round gets the most total points, as long as you keep him on your roster all season, pays 120 bucks, the League fee, so you get your money back.

I am not as familiar with Cleveland as I am Detroit, but Detroit has had areas where police don't want to go I in for quite awhile. The east side is especially bad. It used to be a big deal to shoot at a cop, but not anymore. And if a cop is shot in a bad neighbourhood, he would have a long wait for help. Even with a new mayor I don't see things changing. The residents of Detroit view paying taxes just like they view paying for water. With no money coming in to pay for city services, little will change.

52 There have been some speculation on behalf of various shades of, well, anarcho-capitalists among others, that one solution to security and guaranteeing property taxes in places like Detroit would be for neighborhoods to be set up like a mall management companies.
A business focusing on rental and management purchases an area, makes ground-leases and guarantees water, power and security to tenants who have a the right to build within certain limits.
Leases, which could be directly to tenants who occupy the site or companies that buy blocks and rent them out to tenants, would provide guarantees of security and services and a buffer between them and the bureaucracy.
The city bureaucracy gets a guaranteed tax payment and they don't have to worry about patrolling or fiddly stuff like power and lights and paving.

I suggested this to someone who deals with taxes, and got the answer that such a thing was impossible, but I couldn't get an opinion as to why.

Posted by: Kindltot at November 27, 2014 01:07 PM (t//F+)

53 52, the reason it wont be accepted is that it provides insufficient opportunities for graft. For that reason alone, it is impossible.

Posted by: Mr. Natural at November 27, 2014 01:09 PM (/pOl7)

54 52 Posted by: Kindltot at November 27, 2014 01:07 PM (t//F+)

The problem is that a major portion of the inner city residents of Detroit are unemployed blacks who live off the dole. They are net negatives.

They quit paying their taxes when the taxes became more than their houses were worth. They also quit paying their water bills. The city is reluctant to repo their houses because they could never sell them.

What happened is that when the moocher crowd got larger than the taxpayer crowd they started voting themselves politicians who rewarded them with more bread and circuses. And the taxes climbed even higher. Soon they were on a downward death spiral. The only reason they haven't gone completely belly up long ago is the US taxpayer keeps bailing them out when Democrats are in office.

There is no "guaranteed" tax payment, only guaranteed dole.

57 Well, yes, but the joy of a Detroit is that at this point there may be nothing left to loose. They are already ceding sections of the city to anarchy, they might just as well cede parts to something that would at least give them revenue.

Granted, they will have to have cannibals roaming the streets before that is acceptable to the socialists in charge, but that there by itself is a low bar.

Natural History, or Science Industry? The latter is the one way on the South Side. The Field Museum (nat. hist.) is in the South Loop, and you can just about walk there from downtown. Downtown/Loop areas are much cleaner than they were 30+ years ago.
Anyway, the CTA now runs an express bus from the Loop to Science Industry - makes no stops until you reach your destination - and it's a painless way to get there.

bills. The city is reluctant to repo their houses because they could
never sell them.

What happened is that when the moocher crowd
got larger than the taxpayer crowd they started voting themselves
politicians who rewarded them with more bread and circuses. And the
taxes climbed even higher. Soon they were on a downward death spiral.
The only reason they haven't gone completely belly up long ago is the US
taxpayer keeps bailing them out when Democrats are in office.

There is no "guaranteed" tax payment, only guaranteed dole.

Ok, here's the plan.

I've talked to the band. They've always wanted to play football. So we're going to sneak out and let them play.

Don'\t worry. They suck too....

101 Happy Thanksgiving!!

I have a flat tire. Take care it tomorrow. Must have run over something while driving home this morning from work. I just bought the car last month. Geez. Fortunately I don't have to go anywhere. The Thanksgiving meal is at my sisters (walking distance) and the parents are staying with me. Now there is football to watch and a nap to take! Later morons.

102 Pointing elbows at me...

That's a good thing son. Let's go over there and see if they need help.

Side note: young male hipsters at black jack table in Vegas earlier this year. Smoking hot hipster lady comes up looking for her cell phone. Nerds sit there like ijiots. I look at my SO and whisper, whip out your cell phones lads and ask her for her number, we'll call it for you and we can listen for the ring, intros made, opportunity presented. Nope... So I offered of course with no follow thru, see SO present, found phone 2 tables over, much gratitude. Chastised the shit out of those youngins for the next few minutes. SO, SMOKIN HOT herself, chimed in with when opportunity knocks be a gentleman and you might get lucky. That hopefully left a mark.

Bring on the elbows!

107 Sitting here, listening to the game, nursing a brewski, waiting for the time to head across town to T-Day dinner. Not bitching, and apparently the 5:30 meal time is dictated by a work schedule, but man, it is hard to wait. 3 more hours, then turkey deliciousness.

I make a habit of carrying one of those little air compressors that runs off the cigar lighter outlet, and also a tire plug kit. Get a puncture on the road, it's a lot easier to air up the flat, and put a plug in it than to jack it up, and change the wheel, especially on a 3/4 ton Suburban.

110 AOP, I never worry about Canadians or other auslanders not wishing happy Thanksgiving, any more than I worry about the JW co-worker not wishing me happy birthday. Not on your radar, Columbus day would mean more, I don't sweat it.

But thank you and I wish the best for you and yours.

112 Well, I live in Alexandria VA (DC Suburb) and everything is close by including the dealership. I'm going to find out if that extra service I paid for from them is actually worth it. It will be a good simple test.
