Early Thanksgiving Thread [krakatoa]

Happy Thanksgiving, my hordelings.

turkey-wanted-poster1.jpg

I have much to be thankful for. It is little baby Krak/t's first Thanksgiving, and each of her firsts bring so much of a sense of renewal to everything we experience as a family.

We were invited to Grandpa's house for this day, and there is lovely snow, and the promise of lots of company.

I have been conscripted into duty to cook the bird, and while I like to think it is because I am a good cook, but it may just be because I'm the only one who gets up this early.

Either way, I get all the tasty test bits as the bird cooks, and for that, I am very thankful indeed.

Finally, I am thankful to Ace for having provided this site we all take so much pleasure in.

If you are planning on any Amazon shopping today and throughout the weekend, help show your thanks by following his Amazon store link to start your search from.

Everyone Wins!

I would think that since we have heard testimony from his fellow squad members that he voluntarily walked off his post and joined the muzzies that this would be a foregone conclusion. But I guess since Obama is a muzzie and this turd helped the muzzies there will be no punishment. Also, it would make Obama look like the idiot he is.

20 Some things are just wrong:

National Education Association president Dennis Van Roekel received a huge pay raise this year while the teachers union lost more than 40,000 members.
Van Roekel, who retired this summer, was paid $541,632 during NEA's fiscal year ending Aug. 31 a $130,000 increase from last year, driven by a gross salary hike from $306,286 to $429,509. NEA membership dropped from 3,003,885 last August to 2,963,121 this August.

There should be no teacher's union anyway. And this is further proof that unions really don't give a shit about their membership. It's all for the union bosses. And guess where all that money is coming from?

77 So sad to hear about the Budweiser re-branding. Some traditions are really worth keeping. Looking at my "Clydesdale Kids" on the couch, the floor, the rollaway bed, etc., I am just so discouraged. Belgian company? Are they trying to change the draft horses to Belgians?

Kid from college said that Budweiser was a good beer, especially compared to Coors and PBR -- started laughing and told her that their childhoods were also spent by me in training to keep those brown bottles out of their little hands.

Draft horses, aside from strength, were also valued because they were easy to keep. Hope Bud rethinks its current marketing strategy. Rebranding is so 90s old skool.

Has any previous president ever made the Catholic sign of the Cross, with the left hand, over the pardoned turkey before?

Yeah, I thought not. This idiot did, though.

I just said to my folks: "This Frigging Guy doesn't know the first thing about being either a Christian or an American. I'm out!" And I grabbed my laptop and worked until 2 a.m.

Hail, Fellow!, well met, on this day, this one day when I am released from my attic to share in the blessed bounty that has been bestowed upon us all.

And so, a pint of stout to you all that ye may be healed of your discomfort, for it is this day all across America that people of all degrees of sanity commingle, one with the other to share equally in the harvest of booty, such as might be shared by those who have more than they need rather than hoarding it away for the dark dreary winter days soon to follow.

I, for one, give thanks to the generous, and the pious, and the compassionate for without passion, we would all be lacking in spirit, some people say.

Hail, Fellow!, another pint I say, for the day is long and there is much to be done this day of thanksgiving, before we are once again banished to the attic for another 364 days.

It is good to be crazy on this day, is it not, this day of freedom!

In a video posted to his YouTube account Tuesday, Speaker John Boehner gave viewers an inside look on how he prepares his Thanksgiving meal, and more specifically, how he brines the turkey.

Boehner said it took him five years to perfect brining a turkey after finding a recipe online. The Speaker outlines every ingredient in the video, and calls 16 ounces of pure maple syrup "the real secret ingredient."

The Hill

Boehner still hasn't gotten around to commenting on the Ferguson decision or this week's riots and the collapse of law and order. But cooking tips? Those he's got.

196 Good morning, Morons! It promises to be an interesting day at la maison de whippersnapper, since I woke up to find one of the horses had escaped last night. She's fine, and she didn't make too much of a mess- except for spreading around a nearby bale of hay.

We got 2-3 inches of snow and ice last night, so everything looks like a winter wonderland. It's pretty, but a little slippery. Good thing I'm not doing the driving today.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Found out that a long lost grandson (long story don't ask) will be joining us for Thanksgiving. I hope that it goes well, and I think it will (might be awkward at worst).

Some of the many things I have reason to be thankful for this year are the very existence of this site due to Ace carefully shepherding it along, and the mostly excellent, witty, and knowledgeable crew of Morons and Moronettes that infest this place. Enjoy the day people, I am off to deal with family!

Strom Thurman, 90 some year old, always said he was fucking his 40 year old wife. One of his fellow Senators axed him how he got it up. He said he hit it against the bed post twice before he got in bed.

So the Senator from NY went home and slipped in to his bedroom and hit his dick on the bed post twice.

His wife said, "Oh Strom is that you? "

And another black mother said 'the lord let my boy be killed in Vietnam and we got his insurance policy.' 280 I was just reading a book on George Washington's retirement from the military. His farewell speech included a line that said, "as you value your own sacred hone, express your utmost horror and detestation of the Man who wishes, under an specious pretenses, to overturn the liberties of our Country, and who wickedly attempts to open the flood Gates of Civil discord".

Well, we certainly have no shortage of those characters these days, do we. Starting in the Oval Office and flowing down from there. Poor old GW must be spinning in his grave at what this country has become. How sad.

Posted by: aussie at November 27, 2014 10:06 AM (YreXc)

337 You're welcome, aussie!
Best to go to the source - our wonderful first president Washington!

Here's the intro from the Heritage page I had linked to:

Following a resolution of Congress, President George Washington
proclaimed Thursday the 26th of November 1789 a day of 'public
thanksgiving and prayer' devoted to 'the service of that great and
glorious Being who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was,
that is, or that will be.' Reflecting American religious practice,
Presidents and Congresses from the beginning of the republic have from
time to time designated days of fasting and thanksgiving (the
Thanksgiving holiday we continue to celebrate in November was
established by Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War and made into law by
Congress in 1941).

In setting aside a day for Thanksgiving, Washington established a
non-sectarian tone for these devotions and stressed political, moral,
and intellectual blessings that make self-government possible, in
addition to personal and national repentance. Although the First
Amendment prevents Congress from establishing a religion or prohibiting
its free exercise, Presidents, as well as Congress, have always
recognized the American regard for sacred practices and beliefs. Thus,
throughout American history, Presidents have offered non-sectarian
prayers for the victory of the military and in the wake of catastrophes.
Transcending passionate quarrels over the proper role of religion in
politics, the Thanksgiving Proclamation reminds us how natural their
relationship has been. While church and state are separate, religion and
politics, in their American refinement, prop each other up.

Actually she had flowered tights that were too transparent and you could see her cheeta print briefs, and some sort of sweat-shirt, and navy Reeboks with fluorescent pink laces.
This was not hot because she is built like a fencepost, has that personality of an iguana, and is middle aged.
The outfit would have been cute on the 4 year-old who insisted on dressing herself, but the most charitable I could say was that she obviously dressed in the dark and has no-one to tell her she looked mentally ill.

I mentioned it to a lead-worker, and later in the day Ms. Iguana was glaring daggers and hydrofluoric acid at me, but I couldn't tell if her fashion faux-pas had been mentioned to her or not.

Me? I'm thankful just to be here to talk with my friends in little boxes, or to talk with anyone else.

Since I used all my vacation time during recovery, CW Jr. and I are having Thanksgiving dinner here at home. Just the two of us with Cornish game hens, garlic green beans, and dressing (the doctors can, uh, stuff it today).

Also, we made something passed down from my late mother-in-law. It's an appetizer made by taking a slice of deli ham, spreading cream cheese on one side, then wrapping it around a dill pickle and slicing it. They're delicious. When we asked here what they were called, she said they didn't have a name, so she said, "Let's call them 'Little Sh**ties". I think she would have liked the Horde.

374 I wonder about the bowler who delivered the fatal pitch. He must be absolutely torn up with guilt. He'll probably never be the same again.

When I was a kid, I wanted to be a baseball player. When I was 9 years old, I was playing with my father in the yard. I was pitching, and he hit me right between the eyes with a line drive. Luckily I wasn't injured, but I was badly shaken up. After that, I was "gun-shy" whenever a ball came in my direction. Needless to say, that didn't help my fielding any.

379 Hello Horde.

I'll be popping out soon, long drive to the family's house since they moved to the other side of the river.

I'm thankful that some things are just nothing.
Had a bit of a scare last night. Wife wasn't feeling that great, had tons of cramps, general malaise.

We were out to dinner with the parents, mom who not only is a nurse but also given birth 3.5 times (the .5 was a C-section.)

Left, got out the door and wife said "yeah this doesn't feel right at all." Went back in got mom who said "call the doctor just to be sure" (I've left some symptoms out because they were a bit embarrassing but mom got the full list.)

Heard back quickly from the doctor, told wife to lay down, drink water call if various symptoms arise/come back, but that it was probably nothing.

Indeed, turned out to be nothing, problably some plain old Braxton-Hicks combined with my wife getting a bit of the stomach flu that's been going around (setting up the general malaise feeling.)

Scary moment though. She got some good sleep in last night and everything feels better this morning.

383 Just coming off a bender following my first job-performance review in a year and a half.

Despite
"kicking ass" (reviewer's words) in what I was hired for, and then,
additionally, assuming the duties of what otherwise would have been an
completely separate, $40,000-a-year-plus-benefits employee (also a
"kick-ass" performance), I got a 2% raise.

Company enjoyed a 35% increase in revenues, and my efforts were key to that.

I am thankful for my job, but damn, I begin to see where class envy comes from.

Sorry to gripe, but strangely, poverty and massive work hours lead to a distinct lack of real friends. Or wives.

Thankful

for this forum and most of you people. Please be grateful for what you
have
today, and contrarily to some prominent cob-loggers here, don't assume
poverty is God's righteous judgment on the non-industrious.

Thus endeth the self-pity.

Cheap oil is good overall though. If OPEC wants to act more like a market and less like the cartel it is, that's a good thing on the balance I suspect.

Plus as I understand it it's less shale driving US energy production and more fracking.

So I'll be getting a home cooked turkey dinner, Southern style, whatever that means. The theory of OPEC is they are trying to drive the price lower to bankrupt the America industry, then they can jack up prices later.

A lot of folks think of shale as the production that was theorized in the ~70s and 80s wherein we would use whole processing, rather than the fracking to force out the oil from the tar sand....

at any rate all folks need to understand is the US' main strategic NEED is to reassert its domination over the pricepoints of the global oil market as a tool for coercion and diplomacy...

luckily we have granola munching communard fuckheads in charge of EPA, Foggy Bottom, and PA Ave....so that's not gonna happen and we'll allow goat fuckers the power.

409 Saudi has the lowest production costs. US costs are pretty high. Estimates I've read is that anything much below $70 makes most of the new US production unprofitable, so they'll shut down and wait till the price rises.

From what I've read the sharp drop in prices has already led to scaling back of new drilling.

My understanding is that if OPEC decides to push the price closer to $50 then they can destroy much of the new American production and drive them into bankruptcy.

Halliburton just bought Baker Hughers, presumably in response to the sharp drop, looking for consolidation to survive however long OPEC decides to keep prices low.

433 This is very bad news for places like Venezuela. Elsewhere I've read Venezuela needs prices around $120-$130 to balance their books.

The last time OPEC hammered ultra-low prices they basically collapsed the Soviet Union. Though I'm not seeing people suggest they'll go that low.

Russia is gonna have a lot less cash to fund it's war in Ukraine, if nothing else.

When US production was not online the Sauds were getting "bonus money" through their cartel activities.

US production undercuts their profit margin and may reduce the cash they have to throw at their little pets like AQ and ISIS by drying up the bonus margin....

Anyway you know as well as I do that CinC Olafson would be engaging in economic warfare and destroying Saudi rigs and blockading their shipments....

but America chose a different path.

production and drive them into bankruptcy.

444 Saudis have the lowest production costs on the planet, from what I've read. When oil prices fall they suffer the least pain of anyone.

Thy cynical take is that Saudis waited until US industry had become convinced the oil boom would last, take on a lot of debt to expand, and then drop the hammer.

I know North Dakota held off for years on infrastructure spending -- worried that the boom wouldn't last. Then just in the last year or two they decided, ok, the economists tell us this will last another 20+ years, so they started spending billions on road and highway and infrastructure improvements.

This could be the rug being pulled out from under them.

It you want to destroy the US industry, you have to wait till they commit and go all-in.

It is easy to be drawn into an envy trap by looking around us, easy to forget that we enjoy security and readily available food, water and shelter.

510 I'm spending the day alone as well, by choice. Alone doesn't always mean lonely.
Drove from MI to AR yesterday and overnight with my tractor and implements ... trip took a couple of hours longer than normal due to a GlowBull Warmening blizzard in central Illinois.
Will celebrate T'giving by spending the day unloading the tractor and implements and finding places for them to sit ...

Thankful for this wonderful place to (mostly) lurk and read the comments to my fellow demented morons. Thanks Ace and coblogs ... and especially Vic for a) being younger than some of us, and b) the VNN - best daily news aggregate

Heh. Your Hungry Man will be better than some home made Thanksgiving dinners I've had. So, there's that.

I mentioned this picture last night, from an article in the right sidebar.

Carving the turkey (which is the size of a chicken) with a butter knife? Lettuce and French fries on the plates? WTF?

513 508 -

I have been giving this some thought this week, and while there appears to be a moratorium on political talk, let's just say I have heard the word "tragedy" misused a lot lately.

Tragedy is when you are minding your own business, and something terrible happens. You can look back afterwards and see how you might have done things differently, but still, you had no way of knowing this was the outcome you could expect.

Misfortune is something else. That's when I make a set of choices, and the outcome, which I may not have expected, is a logical consequence of those choices.

Either way, when something terrible happens, people can be sad about it. Locally (yes, I'm going to avoid the big topic) we had a baseball player die a month or so ago, which was not a tragedy. It was a misfortune. He was drunk out of his head, and wrapped his car around a tree. Very sad, but not a tragedy.

If he had rammed his car into yours, and you died, that would be a tragedy. You did nothing to cause this.

All of which is a long way to get to my point. Which is that, we can all look back on this year, think about what we did, the choices we made, and perhaps see some pattern to it all. We are where we are today, mostly due to those choices. Have some of us experienced tragedy? I'm sure we have. Have some experienced misfortune? No doubt.

Please, all of us would be wise to do ourselves a favor, and separate the tragedies from the misfortunes. And maybe while we're at it, separate those things for which was are thankful, between those which are a result of our choices, and those that were given to us by chance or luck or the kindness of others.

I happen to think this is a recipe for happiness and contentment, and I wish all of you a Thanksgiving holiday where you have an abundance of both.

515 I was reading the Tuesday thread about Ferguson.

Lots of bad behavior, and stuff to turn you off the human race.

Then I cam across the following gem:

*************
436 On WZ: Thug parents take their toddlers to help loot the liquor store.

We adopted to girls after involuntary parental rights terminations because of drug abuse and general dirtbag behavior. The oldest was three when we got her. She already hated the police and, when we were driving down the street, told us that another car looked like the car her parents had stolen.
