Some Meh Movies That Are Decent Enough

Hollywood doesn't really make good movies anymore, so here are some Meh ones that are decent wastes of your time.

So if you need stuff to watch this Thanksgiving holiday weekend:

Hansel & Gretl: Witch-Hunters. Just pretty much fun from the opening. Good "Troll" make up (or CGI). I honestly just flat-out enjoyed this movie.

Oh by the way: This movie is ridiculously violent. Ridiculously.

It doesn't just have one head being squashed/exploded by powerful force (a troll's fist, a horse's hoof). It has at least two and maybe three.

Non-Stop. Cranky conservatives may whine about the solution to the mystery, but I'd object back that It's just a movie and a movie has to do something different, right?

Well the solution is dumb and really makes no sense if you think about it, but that doesn't detract from the fact that it's fun, tense, involving thriller, and they don't really make thrillers anymore, so.

Another movie I just liked.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. The concept looks awful, the trailers looked like unfunny CGI-overload nonsense, and it seems kind of shitty to use the "Walter Mitty" title to sell a movie that has almost nothing at all to do with Walter Mitty.

But it turns out the movie is reasonably good. Maybe you just have to be in the mood for it. It's one of those Follow Your Dream movies, but it's especially strident about it.

But I got into it.

On the "Walter Mitty" title -- It feels like a script was written that had nothing to do with Walter Mitty at all, except for the basic idea of a daydreamer hero, but the studio decided "Wow we'd have so much more MindSpace if we had the Walter Mitty title, so let's buy the title and slap it on this unrelated movie."

Now even though that's what I think happened here, I'd point out that the unrelated screenplay is still worth shooting a movie from, and if they had to buy the Walter Mitty title to get financing (based on all that additional "MindSpace"), well, who cares.

Understand going in that this movie has nothing to do with Walter Mitty, except for the title, and except for the hero's name. Not even the better dream sequences are used for the movie.

Still, Walter Mitty is unfilmable as a movie so what did you expect? (No character arc, no actual plot movement. It's just the same joke 4 or 5 times, and then "The End.")

And also, if they felt like they needed that Walter Mitty brand name to sell an unrelated, but still worthy, script, eh, who cares. This is Jon Gruber's America, after all. Such minor deceptions aren't worth getting upset about.

The movie can't really decide if it's your typical Zoolander crazy-silliness Ben Stiller movie or a more heartfelt Follow Your Dream adventure, but it still works, mostly.

Basically a travelogue movie with some settings I wasn't expecting and didn't realize would be fun to look at (Greenland, Iceland, and Afghanistan).

Guardians of the Galaxy. Professional enough, and determined to please you like a puppy. Like a puppy, it's kind of dumb and only has three modes (Eat, Poop, and Slobber), but it's okay.

Not really anything like "The modern-day Star Wars" or anything like that. It's just not serious enough to sell you on the idea that this is what Space looks like. Some nonsense is so cheesy that it seems more Flash Gordon (and I mean the 70s movie version) than Star Wars.

The characters are kind of broad and silly... like Muppets. So it's Muppets in Space, but more violent.

Nothing really wrong with it, and I'd definitely rent it. I just don't want anyone's expectation levels to be set anywhere close to high, though. It's just a dumb, silly special effects movie that doesn't offend. Okay, but don't expect something inspired.

Live. Die. Repeat: The Edge of Tomorrow: People are mentioning this Tom Cruise sci-fi movie favorably in the comments. I reviewed it a while back, also very favorably.

3 Thurber sold all the rights to Samuel G Mayer when he wrote the original script, the Thurber estate gets no $ from that piece of work, sold it for like $25K which was decent cash at the time.

17 Well, if you have Netflix and you want to waste some time, give "Gran Hotel" a try. It is set in Spain in 1905 so it is a kind of Downton Abbey costume drama in 42 parts. It is in Spanish (lisping Castilian Spanish, not the Mexican flavor) so unless you already speak the mother tongue of the 20 million or so of our new new fellow citizens you will have to read the subtitles. You just never really know what is going to happen next on that show. It may not be great art but it is definitely a hoot and a half.

27 >>>Agree on Hansel and Gretel, not so much on Nonstop not because of the ending as the whole, terrible implausibility of it all.

i gave up on Endings a while ago and now just expect them to be absurd last-minute contrivances to "explain" the nonsense of the set-up.

Now I just decide if I like the set-up or not.

I did here, so I like it.

I didn't expect the solution to actually make sense so I'm not really bothered that it doesn't.

In every doctor who or What If? comic book, there's some absurd situation the heroes are thrust into. They get away with this absurdity because of the promise that "This will all make rational sense in the end, when we explain it."

But they're always lying. It won't make sense. (Or it won't make sense 99.9% of the time, anyway.)

I decided i can't let that detract from my enjoyment of a movie, otherwise, I would just not be able to watch thrillers at all.

74 Nancy Pelosi called Harry Reid into her office one day and said " Harry I have a plan to win back Middle America in 2016!"

Great Nancy, but how asked Harry.

"We'll get some cheesy clothes and shoes, like most middle American wear, then stop at a pound and pick up a Labrador retriever. Then, we'll go to a nice old country bar in Montana and show them how much admiration and respect we have for the hard working people living there."

So they did, and found just the place they were looking for in Bozeman, Montana. With the dog in tow, they walked inside and stepped up to the bar. The bartender took a step back and said "Hey aren't you Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid?"

"Yes we are replied Nancy and what a lovely town you have here" We are passing through and Harry Suggested we stop and take in some local color."

They ordered a round of drinks for the entire bar, and started chatting up a storm with anyone who would listen. A few minutes later, a grizzled old rancher came in , walked up to the Labrador, lifted it's tail looked underneath, shrugged his shoulders and left the bar. For the next hour, dozens of ranchers came in and looked under the dogs tail, and left shaking their heads.

Finally Nancy asked" why did all those old ranchers come in look under the dogs tail? Is it some sort of custom?

"Lord no" replied the bartender "Someone's out there running around town, claiming there's a Labrador Retriever in here with two assholes!"

I was underwhelmed sad to say. And it's the first movie I've seen on the big screen since forever. I didn't think the story was that good, but the actors and the director made the most of it.

Posted by: toby928(C) at November 26, 2014 05:12 PM (rwI+c)

84 Agree with Walter Mitty. The movie started out really slowly, and I thought I'd hate it, but actually found myself enjoying it quite a bit by the end. That's saying something, considering that Sean Penn is a good guy in the movie. What can I say, I'm a dirty, stinking RINO.

85 The old war is hell and people are murky morally thing? Been done.

Supposedly it is supposed to be argument for the necessity for "rough men" to defeat evil, and the director has explicitly drawn a parallel between the Nazis and al-Qaeda.

It isn't anti-war at all, from what I have read, but quite the opposite.

Watched EOT again on a flight, it's a great movie. I liked it better the second time around, it was too quick and had me thinking too much for me to catch a few things. It made more sense as well.

Watched some of Godzilla, they killed off Heisenberg to soon. Dumb assed movie, the old ones are better STILL.

And what is it with hollywood stars nowadays, are they all clones? All these jock dudes, with stupid expressions and blank eyes.

Chef

Jon Favreau directs and stars as a chef trying to get his life together and bond with his kid.

Life Itself

Documentary on Roger Ebert. Even if you don't like Ebert, and I really didn't much care for his reviews, politics or taste in general, it's a damn fine hagiography.

http://bitmaelstrom.blogspot.com/2014/09/life-of-crime.html

Calvary

Irish priest (Brendan Gleeson) moves among his sinner parishioners, one of whom has promised to kill him in one week. One of the year's best.

http://bitmaelstrom.blogspot.com/2014/10/calvary.html

Whiplash

J.K. Simmons and Miles Teller face-off in this movie about a demanding jazz teacher and a drummer who wants to be great. Another one of the year's best.

Review not up yet.

Get this. After talking Mrs. H into going to see Fury, we coordinate a day off, go to a 2:20 show. Get very good seats, probably 5 minutes before show time. Obnoxious music is blaring from the sound system. I can take anything for 5 minutes. 10 minutes pass, no video, 15 minutes.

I go out and ask pimply kid at the popcorn counter what is going on. He says they are having some trouble with the projector, but are working on it. I complain about the blaring, rappish music, and go back. They shut the music off. Wait, wait, wait.

Finally at 3:00 we walk out. Back at the ticket counter they can't get the cash registers open without a key. The manager has the key. The manager is somewhere in the nether regions trying to get the shows running. Eventually they give us our show money back, but we're stuck for drinks and popcorn...., and I STILL HAVEN"T SEEN THE DAMN MOVIE. Oh, and 40 minutes round trip travel.

190 Fury: Fine film. Third act is sorta Hollywood-silly in its premise but it makes a good vehicle for the character development and it's good action if you overlook the far-fetched nature of said premise.

I see over a hundred movies a year (over 150 last year) and most (more than half) of them are good. A handful are great. Probably most of the rest are okay, not good, not bad, but passable.

Just a few are real stinkers. This year, the "better off missing" category was "Gloria" (huge critic love on that one), "Under The Skin" (naked ScarJo didn't help), "Two Faces of Janury" (Viggo Mortensen and Kristen Dunst, meh), Atlas Shrugged 3 (the worst of the three films, which is saying something), "Purgatorio" (an awful scream-diary about the US/Mex border), "Watchers of the Sky" (a documentary about the guy who coined the word "genocide" which fails to recognize its own premise), and "Something Wicked" (Brittany Murphy's last film).

Half-dozen stinkers out of over a hundred films is not bad.

The typical comedian career arc is:

Early funny movies
Not so funny "message" or "dark" comedies
Not funny at all fumbling attempts at "serious" rolls
Cartoon voice acting.

You can map that against the careers of Jim Cary, Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler and so on with remarkable fidelity.

261 Another greaat "ridiculous" movie is "Trollhunter," a Norwegian release (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1740707/).

It's far and away the best troll movie ever made -- some guys accidentally discover the troll are real, and always have been, and the government knows about them, and hires professional "rangers" to keep the trolls in check. It actually quite hilarious, and the special effects are to-notch, especially considering it's a non-Hollywood flick. And there are about 5 different troll species, ranging from the scary to the goofy to the awe-inspiring. On the scale of guilty pleasure "absurd premise" films, I'd give it a 9 out of 10.

272 They've released the videotape of that Cleveland shooting where the cop shot a 12-year old black kid who had an air pellet gun that didn't have the orange marking on it, and that the rookie cop mistook for a real gun. Somebody on here was wondering the other day what color the cop is. Wonder no more, he's white.

From looking at the videotape alone, it looks pretty bad. The cops say they ordered the kid to put his hands up three times, but there's no audio on the tape. You just see the cop car pull up, the passenger-side cop gets out, and he almost immediately shoots the kid. Can't tell if the cops said anything, or if the kid heard anything, before the cop shot him.

281 In the year leading up to the release of the iPhone 6, Apple invested more than $1 billion in an effort to make sapphire one of the device's big selling points. Making screens out of the nearly unscratchable material would have helped set the new phone apart from its competitors.

When Apple announced the iPhone 6 this September, however, it didn't have a sapphire screen, only a regular glass one. And a month later, the small New Hampshire-based company chosen to supply Apple with enormous quantities of cheap sapphire, GT Advanced Technologies, declared bankruptcy.

Recent documents from GT's bankruptcy proceedings, and conversations with people familiar with operations at Apple and GT, provide several clues as to what went wrong.

Sapphire must have seemed like a perfect material for a smartphone screen. It has long been used as a cover for luxury watches, and Apple has used it to cover the cameras and fingerprint sensors in some iPhones since October 2013. But making large pieces of sapphire -- enough for a smartphone screen -- would normally cost 10 times as much as using glass.

340 TCM did a premier last night. A one hour program with George Lucas and the film genre of Fantasy.

George's definition of fantasy is broad. Very broad. His THX-1138 is fantasy. So is Dr. Strangelove and James Bond.

Lucas said that Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey is the ultimate science fiction movie. Mentioned growing up on the Flash Gordon serials, Forbidden Planet, and the Blob.

Had praise for Ray Harryhausen. And liked the skeletons most off all. Dark Crystal and Labyrinth were discussed.

Said that what makes a movie like Big Trouble in Little China a cult classic is going too far. Then I think with tongue in cheek George Lucas said "I hope one day Howard the Duck will become a cult classic."

As for the movie that made him a Hollywood powerhouse Star Wars. He described it as fantasy and wanting to have fun. The movie was a B movie that became an A movie. A cheesy movie intended to be seen once in the theater. Discussed the Hero's Journey that guided the story. Kenobi as the crazy guy who is more important than anyone realizes. How in the second two movies had to cannibalize to create another teacher - Yoda whom he described as a green Miss Piggy alluding to Henson's involvement.

Overall the hour episode was not as bad as the first few minutes intimated.

Could go with some pico and cabbage, maybe some crumbled cotija or similar, and there is typically some sort of ranchish type dressing that that Seattle place served.

354 As for Transcendence it has an issue similar to Surrogates. Everything else in both worlds looks like today maybe plus a year. Which leads to an underlying flaw - lack of bandwidth.

357 As for the movie that made him a Hollywood powerhouse Star Wars. He described it as fantasy and wanting to have fun. The movie was a B movie that became an A movie. A cheesy movie intended to be seen once in the theater. Discussed the Hero's Journey that guided the story. Kenobi as the crazy guy who is more important than anyone realizes.

Lucas is a fucking moron & Star Wars is practically a shot-for-shot rip-off of Kurosawa's "The Hidden Fortress" (which was a Laurel & Hardy type comedy).

-----------------

I think the biggest problem with Edge of Tomorrow is that it was a new product to Americans, being released in the middle of a glut of franchise flicks that are popular with the basic sci-fi movie audience. When faced with the choice of going to see the new Transformers flick, or the new Star Trek flick, or the next Marvel flick, or some unknown property called 'Edge of Tomorrow', the vast majority of the movie-going audience went with one of the first three choices.

I suspect that it would have done a lot better if it had been released at when it wasn't competing with all of the franchises.

Snowpiercer - gritty, dystopian, allegory. Sure it has some Occupy the A Train leanings, but skews all facets including education and central planning.

Headhunters - Foreign film, but nicely woven together and loose ends tie up at end.

Get the Gringo - Mel Gibson is very good in this. Reminiscent of Payback which I also enjoyed a lot.

Homefront - Jason Steatham in another formulaic, yet enjoyable action flick.

In the Loop - British film about govt incompetence in a run up to war. Very profane and quick...think Glen Garry Glen Ross had a live child with Best in Show...this movie is what you get.

All movies are currently on Netflix.

417 The problem with calling Snowpiercer =anything= is that it's totally batshit. That's the key element of the story.

There's a full-scale battle between dozens of people IN A TRAIN CAR.

The super-fast train which, by the way, TAKES 365 DAYS TO CIRCLE THE GLOBE. (You figure out the math on that one.)

There are things that are meant allegorically, sure. Probably. But it's so unmoored from anything like reality. So just kick back and enjoy the ride.

Or don't. What do I care? But really, don't take it seriously. There's a weird aesthetic logic to it (Koreans, love 'em) but no, y'know, actual sanity to be found.

The super-fast train which, by the way, TAKES 365 DAYS TO CIRCLE THE GLOBE. (You figure out the math on that one.)

It's going about 68 mph.

There definitely a 99%-er thing going on in the movie, but I try not to take these things too seriously. I especially liked the satire of the grade school indoctrination class.

Chris Evans was far superior here than the Captn Americas, IMO

425 Along with Edge of Tomorrow I'd recommend Oblivion. Those 2 movies were written more like science fiction that the crap that usually gets filmed.

426 I count you Ace among the many things to be thankful for. Everything from just having the smart website to the long posts.
I especially appreciate all the times you work late on a holiday eve like this one
Salute to you sir, and a cold one in your honor

427 MOAR!!!! I'm as right wing political zealot as any of you morons, but I really like Ace when he gets on about current movies. Do more Ace - get off your ass.

428 EOT - liked it. Was not the in movie rules of the universe broken though? I liked Minority Report more.

Pacific Rim - hated it. All the fun of watching someone else play a video game.

Walter Mitty - liked it. Watched the scene set in the ocean about 6 times. Not the movie I thought it would be. Better.

Three Days to Kill - three days to recover from this absolute piece of shit.
Odd Thomas - liked it, even though I kind of find Checkov annoying.

The Fargo TV series. Took me two episodes to get into it, but loved it.

Old School Pick: State of Grace. Ed Harris is awesome. w/ Gary Oldman, Sean Penn, Robin Wright, John C Reilly and John Turturo

SciFi pick: Primer.

Posted by: PRNDL at November 26, 2014 10:26 PM (EPvWB)

429 Uggg, no, the Hansel and Gretel movie was just awful. Only saving grace was watching witches die and if there was a porn for that, this would be it.

I get my mystic violence Tolkein-style, so rewatched the Hobbit movie.

Edge of Tomorrow.... YES. Worth watching, except for the (spoiler alert) fact that at the end I realized they could avoided all the drama by launching nukes at the evil alien super-brain hideout.

Something I watched recently was "The Royal Tanenbaums". It was good. There should be a list of "Good Movies you missed". This would be on it. Cast of all-stars in a quirky New York character movie. Ben Stiller, Owen and Luke Wilson, Gene Hackman (!), Gwenneth Paltrow... Only thing missing would be a Woody Allen walk on.

Also watched "The November Man" with Pierce Brosnan not being Bond, but Bond-like in a spy thriller. Good.

430 I've seen a bunch of movies this year, but the most memorable was Under the Skin with Scarlett Johansen (or however that's spelled).

It's very, very disturbing and not fun at all, and you probably need to see it about five times before you can understand it. I saw it twice and never want to see it again, but I will probably buy it. It sits there and it nags at you, over and over.

Recommended, and not recommended. It's free on Amazon Prime, but you cannot blame me if you watch it.

431 Snowpiercer - gritty, dystopian, allegory. Sure
it has some Occupy the A Train leanings, but skews all facets including
education and central planning.

Posted by: Mongo, Pawn in Game of Life at November 26, 2014 08:05 PM (Mvioh)

I heard Michael Medved give that a scathing, zero-star review. I
think he called it "communist agitprop". I haven't seen it myself.

Posted by: rickl

I thought Snow Piercer sucked.
It's not because of its left-wing message (global warming plus class struggle Marxist nonsense), I went in knowing all that.
It was just dumb, almost more like a stage play because it was so silly. Just an absurd premise with flat, one dimensional characters. The only interesting part was Tilda Swinton's performance, and even that got old fairly quickly.

432 Old school sci-fi horror: rent the blue-ray of the Tobe Hooper-Dan O'Bannon film Lifeforce. Do not watch the movie...watch the "original theatrical version" bonus on the blue-ray disk.

The sound is weird, but this version is awesome, berserk and weird and moves really, really fast. The "director's cut" adds fifteen minutes, which slows everything down and gives you time to think, "Hey--this is stupid."

Plus, it has Patrick Stewart's first onscreen kiss! Um, with Steve Railsback.

And Mathilda May almost always naked. Honestly, she is one of the most gorgeous women I've ever seen.

433 How can you NOT like Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, when eating the wicked witch's candy house gives Hawkeye diabetes?

434 I recently got turned on to a second run theater with digital projection and reasonably comfortable seats. So I have seen a handful of movies this year. Then a friend told me that the last day of a film's run the ticket is only one dollar. Yeah, a buck for a digital projection big screen show. So I took a chance on a little movie I had no idea if I would like or not. Figured I could get up and walk out after fifteen minutes and not really miss the dollar. Boyhood didn't sound like my kind of movie. It is almost three hours long when I usually like the story to wrap up in under two. But when the movie ended I thought that if it was another fifteen or twenty minutes longer I would have happily sat there and continued watching. Terrific movie.

Edge of Tomorrow was very good.

A Walk Among the Tombstones was also very good. Liam Neeson is good but the film is dark. So if that is not your thing, you have been warned.

Guardians was good enough, but I only paid three bucks to see it.

435 Wow. Thanks for that, um, post, Ace.

Posted by: kiffen at November 27, 2014 12:59 AM (9ATG5)

436 Edge of Tomorrow is really, really good. I've never found Emily Blunt game-changingly attractive before. I mean, don't get me wrong, I would crawl over broken glass to give her cake a little icing, but I would do that with pretty much any Hollywood actress.

In this movie though, Jesus, it's like she has a direct pipeline to my crotch. She is just stunningly sexy in this. Oh yeah, the movie's not bad either.

Another couple of good, underrated flicks are The Bourne Legacy (Jeremy Renner is just a great actor, he totally sells that movie) and Jack Reacher (another Tom Cruise actioner. Hey, the guy knows his strength and brings it every performance).

437 "Movies have to do something different" would carry more weight if there had been a Muslim bad guy since, oh say, Wanted: Dead or Alive. (Okay, True Lies, but you get the idea...)

438 I'm the last person to comment on this thread. No one will read my comment ... except some loser who always comes to the party after the cops have already busted it.

Still, I comment. I comment because I live, I breathe. To me, to comment is to live, to br ... oh, I said that already.

Walter Mitty. Best movie I saw last year. Got me humming "Major Tom" for weeks. Watched it twice, actually, a rarity for me, and enjoyed to as much the second time as the first.

I'm done. If you're that loser who came to the party late, please say so. Let me know that I exist.

439 "413
Hopefully no one missed the anti-white indoctrination in Guardians of
the Galaxy. No spoilers, but there are two white men, both heroic in
their own way, shown in romantic relationships with females of other
species. There will be no white babies from those unions. What ethnic
group could hate white people so much that they actively fill the
culture with propaganda advocating our extinction?"

Um, the hero at least *was* a white guy. And "Nova .." whatever was white-bread Disney-style Tomorrowland with white Americans, in color. Glenn Close seemed pretty white Americanized for an alien from another world.
Oh, and if aliens looked like Zoe Soldana in green paint ... I could dig them too.

Seriously, that doesn't pass for movie racism. If you want movie racism and hating on Whitey, rewatch Elysium after watching the Alex Jones takedown - the conspiracy theory is right: Elysium is basically "Birth of a Nation" turned upside down. White people are evil. Illegal aliens are good. If only we gave Obamacare to people living in barrios, all would be good.

440 >About the same here. Haven't been to a theater in years and I haven't hit the Red Box up in almost a year.

Since my wife passed, I've seen one movie in a theater. For most of what's out there, I'm more than content to wait for Netflix to send them on Blu-Ray. I have a decent sound system, a good-sized screen, more comfy seating than the average theater...and a kegerator.

(My wife, OTOH, was all about seeing movies RIGHT NOW!!! Who knows how many points she (and then we) racked up with Regal? At some point, supposedly it would've changed to $8 movies anytime for life, or something.)
