Some Meh Movies That Are Decent Enough
Hollywood doesn't really make good movies anymore, so here are some Meh ones that are decent wastes of your time.
So if you need stuff to watch this Thanksgiving holiday weekend: Hansel & Gretl: Witch-Hunters. Just pretty much fun from the opening. Good "Troll" make up (or CGI). I honestly just flat-out enjoyed this movie. Oh by the way: This movie is ridiculously violent. Ridiculously. It doesn't just have one head being squashed/exploded by powerful force (a troll's fist, a horse's hoof). It has at least two and maybe three.Non-Stop. Cranky conservatives may whine about the solution to the mystery, but I'd object back that It's just a movie and a movie has to do something different, right? Well the solution is dumb and really makes no sense if you think about it, but that doesn't detract from the fact that it's fun, tense, involving thriller, and they don't really make thrillers anymore, so. Another movie I just liked. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. The concept looks awful, the trailers looked like unfunny CGI-overload nonsense, and it seems kind of shitty to use the "Walter Mitty" title to sell a movie that has almost nothing at all to do with Walter Mitty. But it turns out the movie is reasonably good. Maybe you just have to be in the mood for it. It's one of those Follow Your Dream movies, but it's especially strident about it. But I got into it. On the "Walter Mitty" title -- It feels like a script was written that had nothing to do with Walter Mitty at all, except for the basic idea of a daydreamer hero, but the studio decided "Wow we'd have so much more MindSpace if we had the Walter Mitty title, so let's buy the title and slap it on this unrelated movie." Now even though that's what I think happened here, I'd point out that the unrelated screenplay is still worth shooting a movie from, and if they had to buy the Walter Mitty title to get financing (based on all that additional "MindSpace"), well, who cares. Understand going in that this movie has nothing to do with Walter Mitty, except for the title, and except for the hero's name. Not even the better dream sequences are used for the movie. Still, Walter Mitty is unfilmable as a movie so what did you expect? (No character arc, no actual plot movement. It's just the same joke 4 or 5 times, and then "The End.") And also, if they felt like they needed that Walter Mitty brand name to sell an unrelated, but still worthy, script, eh, who cares. This is Jon Gruber's America, after all. Such minor deceptions aren't worth getting upset about. The movie can't really decide if it's your typical Zoolander crazy-silliness Ben Stiller movie or a more heartfelt Follow Your Dream adventure, but it still works, mostly. Basically a travelogue movie with some settings I wasn't expecting and didn't realize would be fun to look at (Greenland, Iceland, and Afghanistan). Guardians of the Galaxy. Professional enough, and determined to please you like a puppy. Like a puppy, it's kind of dumb and only has three modes (Eat, Poop, and Slobber), but it's okay. Not really anything like "The modern-day Star Wars" or anything like that. It's just not serious enough to sell you on the idea that this is what Space looks like. Some nonsense is so cheesy that it seems more Flash Gordon (and I mean the 70s movie version) than Star Wars. The characters are kind of broad and silly... like Muppets. So it's Muppets in Space, but more violent. Nothing really wrong with it, and I'd definitely rent it. I just don't want anyone's expectation levels to be set anywhere close to high, though. It's just a dumb, silly special effects movie that doesn't offend. Okay, but don't expect something inspired. Live. Die. Repeat: The Edge of Tomorrow: People are mentioning this Tom Cruise sci-fi movie favorably in the comments. I reviewed it a while back, also very favorably.

i gave up on Endings a while ago and now just expect them to be absurd last-minute contrivances to "explain" the nonsense of the set-up.
Now I just decide if I like the set-up or not.
I did here, so I like it.
I didn't expect the solution to actually make sense so I'm not really bothered that it doesn't.
In every doctor who or What If? comic book, there's some absurd situation the heroes are thrust into. They get away with this absurdity because of the promise that "This will all make rational sense in the end, when we explain it."
But they're always lying. It won't make sense. (Or it won't make sense 99.9% of the time, anyway.)
I decided i can't let that detract from my enjoyment of a movie, otherwise, I would just not be able to watch thrillers at all.

Honestly, every movie I hear about sounds like something else I've seen before. 90 minutes is generally more of my time than I'm willing to commit.
However, I'll sit through 18 minutes of commercials to watch 42 minutes of Walking Dead, Justified, American Horror Story, The Americans, etc.
It's where the talent is.

It's based on a Dean Koontz story by the same name. I read it a while back, and was pleasantly surprised to find the movie stayed pretty true to the book (at least as far as I could remember)

Supposedly it is supposed to be argument for the necessity for "rough men" to defeat evil, and the director has explicitly drawn a parallel between the Nazis and al-Qaeda.

Watched EOT again on a flight, it's a great movie. I liked it better the second time around, it was too quick and had me thinking too much for me to catch a few things. It made more sense as well.
Watched some of Godzilla, they killed off Heisenberg to soon. Dumb assed movie, the old ones are better STILL.
And what is it with hollywood stars nowadays, are they all clones? All these jock dudes, with stupid expressions and blank eyes.
Like the Tron flick, made so much worse with that weird kid.

I was on a flight to Scotland recently, and watched about 6 movies round trip, including EOT and Godzilla. It's a good way to burn through a lot of crap without feeling guilty about going to a theater and supporting Hollywood, or even supporting the studio through Netflix.
EOT and Godzilla were both about 5 out of 10. I loathe Tom Cruise.

All Luc Besson flash and production design, which I happen to really like, so it worked for me. Story goes from A to B with no real surprises, but enjoyable as low impact viewing.

It reminds me of the old SNL skit with Eddie Murphy as Buckwheat singing songs. He sings each title, and the gibberish "title" appears on the screen. FOr the last song, he sings something completely unintelligible, and a question mark appears. I've had to rewind PB many times to try and figure out just what the hell they were saying.

I am. I was pretty happy that Non-Stop was NOT an action movie. They do throw in a couple of fights, pretty much just so they can show them in the trailer and make people think it's an action movie.
Though the action scenes -- few as they were -- were decent. They felt more earned by the movie, and less just some gratuitous fan service.

Get this. After talking Mrs. H into going to see Fury, we coordinate a day off, go to a 2:20 show. Get very good seats, probably 5 minutes before show time. Obnoxious music is blaring from the sound system. I can take anything for 5 minutes. 10 minutes pass, no video, 15 minutes.
I go out and ask pimply kid at the popcorn counter what is going on. He says they are having some trouble with the projector, but are working on it. I complain about the blaring, rappish music, and go back. They shut the music off. Wait, wait, wait.
Finally at 3:00 we walk out. Back at the ticket counter they can't get the cash registers open without a key. The manager has the key. The manager is somewhere in the nether regions trying to get the shows running. Eventually they give us our show money back, but we're stuck for drinks and popcorn...., and I STILL HAVEN"T SEEN THE DAMN MOVIE. Oh, and 40 minutes round trip travel.

I see over a hundred movies a year (over 150 last year) and most (more than half) of them are good. A handful are great. Probably most of the rest are okay, not good, not bad, but passable.
Just a few are real stinkers. This year, the "better off missing" category was "Gloria" (huge critic love on that one), "Under The Skin" (naked ScarJo didn't help), "Two Faces of Janury" (Viggo Mortensen and Kristen Dunst, meh), Atlas Shrugged 3 (the worst of the three films, which is saying something), "Purgatorio" (an awful scream-diary about the US/Mex border), "Watchers of the Sky" (a documentary about the guy who coined the word "genocide" which fails to recognize its own premise), and "Something Wicked" (Brittany Murphy's last film).
Half-dozen stinkers out of over a hundred films is not bad.

Cartoon voice acting.

"Chef" took a lot of flack for its predictability but I say that's bullshit. 99% of movies are predictable in virtually every regard, especially for film critics (and jerks like me) who see so many movies.
"Chef" was wholesome, traditional family fare, and you can say that's well-worn ground, but name another movie this year like it.

It's far and away the best troll movie ever made -- some guys accidentally discover the troll are real, and always have been, and the government knows about them, and hires professional "rangers" to keep the trolls in check. It actually quite hilarious, and the special effects are to-notch, especially considering it's a non-Hollywood flick. And there are about 5 different troll species, ranging from the scary to the goofy to the awe-inspiring. On the scale of guilty pleasure "absurd premise" films, I'd give it a 9 out of 10.

From looking at the videotape alone, it looks pretty bad. The cops say they ordered the kid to put his hands up three times, but there's no audio on the tape. You just see the cop car pull up, the passenger-side cop gets out, and he almost immediately shoots the kid. Can't tell if the cops said anything, or if the kid heard anything, before the cop shot him.

I used to work on thin film diamond grown from the gas phase. I kind of surprised some of the cheaper versions of that haven't been incorporated onto those screens. When this process first started, they were using it to coat sunglasses, bar scanners in groceries, etc.

Had praise for Ray Harryhausen. And liked the skeletons most off all. Dark Crystal and Labyrinth were discussed.
Said that what makes a movie like Big Trouble in Little China a cult classic is going too far. Then I think with tongue in cheek George Lucas said "I hope one day Howard the Duck will become a cult classic."
As for the movie that made him a Hollywood powerhouse Star Wars. He described it as fantasy and wanting to have fun. The movie was a B movie that became an A movie. A cheesy movie intended to be seen once in the theater. Discussed the Hero's Journey that guided the story. Kenobi as the crazy guy who is more important than anyone realizes. How in the second two movies had to cannibalize to create another teacher - Yoda whom he described as a green Miss Piggy alluding to Henson's involvement.
Overall the hour episode was not as bad as the first few minutes intimated.

I think the biggest problem with Edge of Tomorrow is that it was a new product to Americans, being released in the middle of a glut of franchise flicks that are popular with the basic sci-fi movie audience. When faced with the choice of going to see the new Transformers flick, or the new Star Trek flick, or the next Marvel flick, or some unknown property called 'Edge of Tomorrow', the vast majority of the movie-going audience went with one of the first three choices.
I suspect that it would have done a lot better if it had been released at when it wasn't competing with all of the franchises.

Headhunters - Foreign film, but nicely woven together and loose ends tie up at end.
Get the Gringo - Mel Gibson is very good in this. Reminiscent of Payback which I also enjoyed a lot.
Homefront - Jason Steatham in another formulaic, yet enjoyable action flick.
In the Loop - British film about govt incompetence in a run up to war. Very profane and quick...think Glen Garry Glen Ross had a live child with Best in Show...this movie is what you get.
All movies are currently on Netflix.

There definitely a 99%-er thing going on in the movie, but I try not to take these things too seriously. I especially liked the satire of the grade school indoctrination class.
Chris Evans was far superior here than the Captn Americas, IMO

Pacific Rim - hated it. All the fun of watching someone else play a video game.
Walter Mitty - liked it. Watched the scene set in the ocean about 6 times. Not the movie I thought it would be. Better.
Three Days to Kill - three days to recover from this absolute piece of shit.
Odd Thomas - liked it, even though I kind of find Checkov annoying.
The Fargo TV series. Took me two episodes to get into it, but loved it.
Old School Pick: State of Grace. Ed Harris is awesome. w/ Gary Oldman, Sean Penn, Robin Wright, John C Reilly and John Turturo

I get my mystic violence Tolkein-style, so rewatched the Hobbit movie.
Edge of Tomorrow.... YES. Worth watching, except for the (spoiler alert) fact that at the end I realized they could avoided all the drama by launching nukes at the evil alien super-brain hideout.
Something I watched recently was "The Royal Tanenbaums". It was good. There should be a list of "Good Movies you missed". This would be on it. Cast of all-stars in a quirky New York character movie. Ben Stiller, Owen and Luke Wilson, Gene Hackman (!), Gwenneth Paltrow... Only thing missing would be a Woody Allen walk on.
Also watched "The November Man" with Pierce Brosnan not being Bond, but Bond-like in a spy thriller. Good.

It's very, very disturbing and not fun at all, and you probably need to see it about five times before you can understand it. I saw it twice and never want to see it again, but I will probably buy it. It sits there and it nags at you, over and over.
Recommended, and not recommended. It's free on Amazon Prime, but you cannot blame me if you watch it.

I thought Snow Piercer sucked.
It's not because of its left-wing message (global warming plus class struggle Marxist nonsense), I went in knowing all that.
It was just dumb, almost more like a stage play because it was so silly. Just an absurd premise with flat, one dimensional characters. The only interesting part was Tilda Swinton's performance, and even that got old fairly quickly.

The sound is weird, but this version is awesome, berserk and weird and moves really, really fast. The "director's cut" adds fifteen minutes, which slows everything down and gives you time to think, "Hey--this is stupid."
Plus, it has Patrick Stewart's first onscreen kiss! Um, with Steve Railsback.
And Mathilda May almost always naked. Honestly, she is one of the most gorgeous women I've ever seen.

In this movie though, Jesus, it's like she has a direct pipeline to my crotch. She is just stunningly sexy in this. Oh yeah, the movie's not bad either.
Another couple of good, underrated flicks are The Bourne Legacy (Jeremy Renner is just a great actor, he totally sells that movie) and Jack Reacher (another Tom Cruise actioner. Hey, the guy knows his strength and brings it every performance).

Since my wife passed, I've seen one movie in a theater. For most of what's out there, I'm more than content to wait for Netflix to send them on Blu-Ray. I have a decent sound system, a good-sized screen, more comfy seating than the average theater...and a kegerator.
(My wife, OTOH, was all about seeing movies RIGHT NOW!!! Who knows how many points she (and then we) racked up with Regal? At some point, supposedly it would've changed to $8 movies anytime for life, or something.)
