Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Second Take: Schumer's Merely Attempting a Trial Balloon Tactic of Distancing Democrats From Obamacare, While Continuing to Support and Defend ItI thought the Schumer statement -- in which he criticized Obama for pushing Obamacare in 2010, instead of addressing the needs of the And The Middle Class -- was important. But now I think it's just so much positioning. With Elizabeth Warren now endorsing his statement (!!!), it seems obvious to me that this does not represent a true schism in the Democrat Party, but rather a way to snooker the voters again, to Gruber them anew. The public has turned against government "solutions," starting with its longheld opposition to Obamacare. And Obama is more personally unpopular than ever. As John Ekdahl is always saying, at some point the 2016 elections will require Democrats to separate themselves from Obama, at least rhetorically, if not in reality. Thus Charles Schumer's attempt at what he thinks is a cagey fillip -- he will not actually come out against Obamacare, but attempt to channel the frustration of the voters ("They spent all their time trying to pass this bill which only helps 5% of the population, instead of us, the bruised and battered And The Middle Class") without actually giving an inch on Obamacare. They did the same thing with Clinton during Impeachment, of course. They would not vote for impeachment (just as they will not vote to repeal Obamacare or alleviate the punishing effects on the And The Middle Class) but they came up with a series of rhetorical posturings -- Clinton's behavior is "simply indefensible," for example -- intended to mimic the public's emotional response to the scandal without actually giving an inch on it in policy terms. So now Charles Schumer, and Elizabeth Warren (!!!), are complaining that Obama spent too much time and capital and money addressing the concerns of the lower classes without sufficiently addressing the needs of the And The Middle Class. But will they attempt to actually unburden the And The Middle Class by ending Obamacare's punishing wealth-redistributing taxes on the And The Middle Class? Of course not. But Schumer (and Warren, and Hillary too) hope that the And The Middle Class is enough of a cheap date to just accept some emotional grousing, rather than demanding specific action to alleviate their burdens.Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

He never attacked Obamacare. He just said it was bad timing, which it very obviously was. So abundantly obvious that only a glassy-eyed zealot would even consider disagreeing.
Schumer's problem wasn't the big government stupidity of the program or how it was implemented, but that it was the wrong big government program for the timing. He's all for it, as awful as it is, just not THEN. And the only reason he thinks that is that with hindsight he can now, four years later, see that maybe people weren't very happy with the timing and its hurting his political clout. I said as much the other day. Schumer isn't changing his opinion as much as he recognizes that the public has changed their, and if he wants to remain the elected senator from NY he needs to modify his position as well. Any good politician recognizes this and knows when a shift is necessary.
Plus he is wisely pinning this on Obama, when Obama really didn't do anything but sign the bill. Its smart politics, voters will likely fall for it. He won't be arguing for repeal, but nor could he continue to simply defend Obamacare. Regardless, it does represent somewhat of a significant step. The country is being pushed to the right. It doesn't matter if that is from an ideological perpsective or simply results perspective. Schumer would not have said this 2 years ago. So his statement is significant. That's certainly true. When you fixate on "if" you can do something, it's easy to overlook the question of whether you should. Control of the Border. Regulation of citizenship/naturalization and immigration. National Defense. Setting of weights and measures. Establishing and enforcing treaties. Regulating trade between the States. That's really the summation of what the Federal Government *should* be doing. If it's not one of those things (and if you have to "argue" that it is, then it isn't), the Feds should have no part of it. The number of callers that complain about the ACA/ObamaCare is significant. We can't comment or get into politics, it's just 'well we do what we can to comply with ..." One caller a 26yo city gal who just aged off her parent's policy called in. She said "I have some questions that I think I know the answer to if I'm right I might become a Republican and take up smoking by the end of this call." Well. She was right. She's being asked to pay about $2500 for a policy which gives her 3 well check appts for 'free' but then she has to pay $6,350 out of pocket if she's actually sick before benefits kick in. Which she thought was insane. Well. I resisted the urge to tell her to pick up as much free birth control as she could. Because it's free and, apparently, important. Here's the thing: The Democratic party depends on monolithic black voting along with very high turnout. Their loyalties will be tested. Note that Obama did not go to Ferguson and is kissing up to the Hispanics (via illegals) after having kissed up to the gheys. The short term for Democrats has the potential to be devastating. That's because they don't teach economics in this country anymore. They don't understand that you have to make money before you can pay it out to employees. Forcing them to pay more means they have to make more, which means more expensive products or less jobs. But hey, don't let a little thing like logic get in the way of feel-good solutions that are rendered meaningless as soon as the price of everything in the supply chain adjusts to build in the new labor cost. I've often wondered this. Who do federal tax-exemptions most benefit? Conservatives in general are more charitable so you could argue it benefits conservatives come tax time. But liberals love giving to charities that may not be truly charitable (e.g., colleges, symphonies, etc.). So if you eliminated tax-exemptions and charitable deductions who would benefit and who would be punished.

I think its bigger. I've always thought that Americans would be repelled when they saw what Obama did, not what he said but what his actual policies wrought. Because real liberal policies are not popular with Americans. Its why most of Obama's real policy was delayed until after he was re-elected. What Obama is doing right now is trashing liberalism for the next decade or so and smart Dems realize it. They need to prove that they are centrists really and that they care about the middle class (trademark pending) and that it was all Obama's fault for dragging them so far left. The state names the tune, and their chosen winners dance to it. Politicians get kickbacks from industry, industry gets anti-competitive laws and regulations that make them the only game in town. The political and business elite merge into a controlling aristocracy, and everyone else is fucked. I can do this so successfully because, you see, I am not seen or perceived as a conservative by my friends or relatives, so instead of dismissing my views and arguments out of hand -- which they would do if I was "othered" as a conservative -- they actually listen to and internalize my insidious "counter-intuitive" facts, and hoo-boy it gets to them. Little by little I have moved my entire family and social circle about 40% rightward over the years and they don't even know it -- they don't know my plan, and they don't even know they've moved rightward. They merely think they've integrated some "common sense" into their leftwing worldviews, unaware that looming up ahead is a breaking point when the common sense overwhelms the progressive religious zeal and suddenly they will find themselves changing sides. Most people end up changing sides as they age into wisdom anyway - my subtle shenanigans merely accelerates the process. Posted by: zombie at November 26, 2014 02:40 PM (K4YiS) 166

Posted by: Just Some Guy at November 26, 2014 02:30 PM (vgIRn)" The thing is that thanks to Griggs v.Duke Power there is some value to even a Gender Studies degree. That decision said that businesses could not test job applicants for IQ, aptitude or even literacy if the test results resulted in "disparate impact" i.e. if blacks did worse on the test than whites. However, they did leave the loophole that businesses could require a college degree for jobs that previously had not required one. The degree means that you can probably read, write and count to eleven without dropping your pants. It means that you have enough self discipline to stick it out for four years and enough sense to drop the classes that are too hard for you and the 8 AM classes if you can't manage to get up that early. The problem is not so much with the worthless degrees as much as that Obama's golden touch has brought the economy to a halt and there are not a lot of places hiring these days. So JackStraw, how (in practical terms) do you see your long-foreseen American rejection of the disaster of O-care actually playing out? I mean, what do you expect Congress to do in the next 2 years about it, and how will that turn out?
Recall that health care finance/pricing was already massively screwed up (almost the entire reason costs had risen so dramatically over the last 40 years), and needed fundamental (and, of course, completely opposite) "fixes" or real reforms, prior to O-care. Could be that I've missed it, but I am not aware of any serious and useful package of actual reforms being even talked about, much less proposed, by anyone. Return to the awful status quo ante (caused entirely by non-medical and non-market factors like Medicare, state-level "regulation" i.e. cartelization, liability shake-down, competition-killing distortions at every turn) would be a big improvement, but seems unlikely the "opposition" party is capable of any more than that. Then I'd make students loans partially chargeable to the universities, so they have some skin in the game. Again, tough to gin up popular opposition. Students and parents alike will be thrilled to see the money-grubbing universities get kicked in the nuts. Next, maybe tax union dues or something like that, and tax overseas wire transfers that can't show corresponding income. Again, Joe Sixpack won't give a shit about that, but it'll help to undercut Democrat funding and support. Only later would I go after trial lawyers, one of the very biggest contributors to the Democrat Party, per FEC filings compiled at OpenSecrets.org. I wish I knew. But I disagree with your statement that nobody has talked about useful solutions to what ultimately is a pricing problem as you noted. And this problem was largely caused by the federal government when they forced EMTALA on the states. It was a massive overreach of federal responsibility and caused the states to react in a variety of ways, most of them bad. The single biggest cause of the massive price increase in health care and health insurance is the same problem we see whenever government gets involved, they distort the market with subsidies and rules which often (usually) do not take costs into account. I mean who could have foreseen that mandating that men need gynecological coverage would cause premiums to rise? I don't have a problem with government mandating that pre-existing conditions should not be cause for exclusion from policies, don't have a problem with gov't saying insurance companies can't shut you off if you make X number of claims. But that's about where their involvement should end. Let insurance be sold across state lines which has been a staple of Republican policy for years. Increase the risk pools for insurers and you will see prices come down. Tort reform is way overdue and while its affect may seem marginal its still hurts pricing. Let the market drive prices. The Dems have fought all these simple market based ideas tooth and nail which should give you a good indication of how effective and individual oriented they are. But I have no doubt that Americans will reject Obamacare. Hell, they already are and its still in its infancy. Posted by: JackStraw at November 26, 2014 03:01 PM (g1DWB) 220

Posted by: Hurricane LaFawnduh at November 26, 2014 02:49 PM (HBAcW) There are still private loans available. They are typically done to bridge a gap between Federal loans , scholarships, etc. And you can refinance your Federal loan into a private loan, although that usually isn't advantageous unless you are "well employed". The unsubsidized loans are what one pays the interest on directly to the Dept of Education. The payments can be deferred while you are in school. And I can't imagine why anyone wouldn't get them deferred, how can you pay interest on a loan while enrolled at least half time in school. I guess I should have been more specific. Tort reform should be a state issue as far as I'm concerned. But I think the opposite is true with regard to selling insurance across state lines. Why is the federal government involved in limiting where a business sells its products in the US? Mostly the states. But unless you are going to unravel all government spending on health programs, medicare, medicaid, grants, etc., which in my opinion is never going to happen, work with the system you have to come up with the best solution. We do not have a free market for anything, there are always limiting laws, so looking for a completely states rights, conservative solution for a national issue is always going to have some compromises. Get rid of mandates, sell across state lines and let the market set prices. And then we can go back to remembering this isn't the most pressing problem facing the Republic. It seems that the Dems have used the 'frog in the pot of water' approach since the 70's . . always just tweaking the temp alittle bit here and a little there to keep things moving in their intended direction. Most of the LIV's dont notice it and it just becomes 'the way things are'. I think the O-care and immigration actions have turned the temp up in a way that EVERYONE can plainly feel and they know exactly who to blame. I concur with this. Too much, too fast. My suggestion is to turn insurance into non-profits. Profiting on the misery and illness of others is just ghoulish.
Posted by: Christopher Taylor Blue Cross and Blue Shield in my state is basically that, it's like a Credit Union that's owned by memebers. The"insurance company making profits!" has been a boogie man of the Left for forever, but it's really not a game changer. The profits are miniscule for most insurance companies, if all the profits were given back to consumers it would probably shave like $5 a month off your bill. They were sure they'd won, that they had finally destroyed the hated enemy. Remember all the books and comments about how the Republican Party was destroyed? That it would be a generation or more before they ever had power again - if then? Remember the certainty, the gigantic gloating grin on Pelosi's face? Having an inside with insurance companies I can assure you they make far more profit than that. But my point isn't so much lower premiums as a shift in perspective and approach. Instead of being a corporation that exists in order to make money for the shareholders, they become a service industry that exists to serve their members. That's a big difference in corporate philosophy. Posted by: Christopher Taylor at November 26, 2014 03:47 PM (39g3+) 368

CARSON: COPS COULD BE TRAINED TO SHOOT FOR THE LEGS
Jeez. How about black youth could be trained to be law abiding, civilized people and not animals. Posted by: J.J. Sefton That's very unfortunate; he seems likable and eminently more qualified than the current occupant. But, shooting to wound is essentially an admission that you are not warranted in using deadly force, and another tool should be used like Mr. Baton. For one reason, shooting people in the legs would at best be considered a "less lethal" response like a tazer or bean bag rounds--such an act could still result in death, and certainly could permanently maim the assailant. Based on what evidence of the case I've heard, Mike Brown escalated the incident to the point where the law in most states would find the shooting a "justified" one. Brown gambled and lost, and now everybody suffers. Posted by: T. Jeff at November 26, 2014 03:57 PM (/Ho8c) 382

You're "insider" info is wrong, the average profit of health care companies is around 3.4% according to US News & World Report: "Overall, the profit margin for health insurance companies was a modest 3.4 percent over the past year, according to data provided by Morningstar. That ranks 87th out of 215 industries and slightly above the median of 2.2 percent." http://tinyurl.com/4hfjlea What about those EVIL doctors that also make money treating the sick? This has been a left-wing fantasy since forever. the truth is, companies trying to realize a profit and competing with others makes goods and services CHEAPER. Liberals constantly lie because they are never punished for their lies. You'll need to water board him if you want the truth. Until then tar and feathers will do.
