Because I'm tired and lazy tonight.

A Look Back at the 1992 LA Riots

Someone on AR15.com collected these videos of the riots in progress.

A couple observations/notes:

  • Fashion-wise it was still the 80s in 1992.
  • Newscasters were even more woefully ignorant of guns then if that's possible.
  • It's good to have friends. And armed friends who show up are best of all.
  • The female reporter in video 3 is either very brave or very stupid or both.
  • There's a gunfight between Korean storeowners and gangbangers starting at about 1:25 in video 3
  • Riots are scary as shit (okay I knew this from being caught up in the LA riots but over the 22 years it's faded a bit)

Darren Wilson's Testimony to the Grand Jury

I then opened my door again and used my door to push him backwards, and while I'm doing that I tell him to "get the fuck back," and then I use my door to push him.

He then grabs my door again and shuts my door. At that time is when I saw him coming into my vehicle. His head was higher than the top of my car. And I see him ducking and as he is ducking, his hands are up and he is coming in my vehicle.

I had shielded myself in this type of manner and kind of looked away, so I don't remember seeing him come at me, but I was hit right here in the side of the face with a fist. I don't think it was a full-on swing, I think it was a full-on swing but not a full shot. I think my arm deflected some of it, but there was still a significant amount of contact that was made to my face.

After he hit me then, it stopped for a second. He kind of like, I remember getting hit and he kind of like grabbed and pulled, and then it stopped. When I looked up, if this is my car door, I'm sitting here facing that way, he's here. He turns like this and now the Cigarillos I see in his left hand. He's going like this and he says, "hey, man, hold these."

I tried to hold his right arm and use my left hand to get out to have some type of control and not be trapped in my car any more. And when I grabbed him, the only way I can describe it is I felt like a five-year-old holding onto Hulk Hogan.

Hulk Hogan, that's just how big he felt and how small I felt just from grasping his arm.

And as I'm trying to open the door is when, and I can't really get it open because he is standing only maybe 6 inches from my door, but as I was trying to pull the handle, I see his hand coming back around like this and he hit me with this part of his right here, just a full swing all the way back around and hit me right here. (indicating)

After he did that, next thing I remember is how do I get this guy away from me. What do I to not get beaten inside my car.

I considered using my mace, however, I wasn't willing to sacrifice my left hand, which is blocking my face to go for it. I couldn't reach around on my right to get it and if I would have gotten it out, the chances of it being effective were slim to none. His hands were in front of his face, it would have blocked the mace from hitting him in the face and if any of that got on me, I know what it does to me and I would have been out of the game. I wear contacts, if that touches any part of my eyes, then I can't see at all.

Like I said, I don't carry a taser, I considered my asp [expandable baton], but to get that out since I kind of sit on it, I usually have to lean forward and pull myself forward to the steering wheel to get it out. Again, I wasn't willing to let go of the one defense I had against being hit. The whole time, I can't tell you if he was swinging at me or grabbing me or pushing me or what, but there was just stuff going on and I was looking down figuring out what to do.

Also, when I was grabbing my asp, I knew if I did even get it out, I'm not going to be able to expand it inside the car or am I going to be able to make a swing that will be effective in any manner.

Next I considered my flashlight. I keep that on the passenger side of the car. I wasn't going to, again, reach over like this to grab it and then even if I did grab it, would it even be effective. We are so close and confined.

So the only other option I thought I had was my gun. I drew my gun, I turned. It is kind of hard to describe it, I turn and I go like this. He is standing here. I said," get back or I'm going to shoot you."

He immediately grabs my gun and says, "you are too much of a pussy to shoot me." [emphasis added--AFB]

Mugged Graduate Student: I Deserved It Because of My 'Privilege'

Channeling his inner Robert Fisk.

Senior Oliver Friedfeld and his roommate were held at gunpoint and mugged recently. However, the GU student isn't upset. In fact he says he "can hardly blame [his muggers]."

"Not once did I consider our attackers to be 'bad people.' I trust that they weren't trying to hurt me. In fact, if they knew me, I bet they'd think I was okay," wrote Friedfeld in an editorial featured in The Hoya, the university's newspaper. "The fact that these two kids, who appeared younger than I, have even had to entertain these questions suggests their universes are light years away from mine."

Friedfeld claims it is the pronounced inequality gap in Washington, D.C. that has fueled these types of crimes. He also says that as a middle-class man, he does not have the right to judge his muggers.

"Who am I to stand from my perch of privilege, surrounded by million-dollar homes and paying for a $60,000 education, to condemn these young men as 'thugs?'" asks Friedfeld. "It's precisely this kind of 'otherization' that fuels the problem."

Some people simply lack or have been conditioned over years of education to lose all survival instincts. And they rely on stronger, savvier people to protect them while all the while feeling smugly superior to their protectors.

Goodbye to that Whole 'Team of Rivals' Thing

The arc of Obama's presidency when it comes to who he listens to most, however, appears to be not all that dissimilar from the one he rose to prominence critiquing. It turns out that in politics, keeping your friends close and your enemies (or at least rivals) closer isn't as important as keeping your friends close.

Luck vs. Preparation

So NY Giants receiver Odell Beckham made this catch in Sunday's game against Dallas. What a lucky grab from the air right?

Except that it turns out that he regularly practices making exactly this kind of catch.

Bill Cosby Leaked His Daughter's Drug Problem to National Enquirer to Cover Up His Show Girl Problem

A journalist I've known for many years recalls a sordid tale about Cosby in the summer of 1989, when the reporter was working for the National Enquirer.

The supermarket weekly had a solid story about Cosby - whose show was No. 1 in TV ratings and who was viewed as a perfect father figure - "swinging with Sammy Davis Jr. and some showgirls in Las Vegas," the reporter, who didn't want to be named, told me yesterday.

Contacted by the Enquirer for comment, Cosby apparently handed the weekly a story about his then-23-year-old daughter Erinn's battle with drug and alcohol abuse instead.

"My editor told me that daddy Cosby was the source. He ratted out his flesh and blood," said my source.

25 You only see the value of roof top Koreans in a disarmed area of society. During the immediate aftermath of Katrina, there were many hand painted signs around here warning 'We Shoot Looters'.

And those caught looting by the cops all received harsh sentences. There was some looting of course, but it was an overall minor problem considering the scale of destruction.

Just got back from Durham. Wife had a dance gig there tonight. Right next to the place she danced at, I saw at least 50 cops in cars, trucks, and bikes. 49 The Boston Tea Party comparison is dumb for this reason:

1) The tea party protest itself was peaceful. In fact it was exceedingly non-violent.

2) The British reported: The participants in the tea party itself swept the deck of the ship from which the tea was dumped, leaving the ship cleaner than it was when they arrived.

96 God bless the Koreans.

One thing the Koreans did learn after the riots was the need to mobilize politically. Yes, there were Koreans fighting back from the rooftops, but those animals did a lot of damage throughout the Korean areas.

Afterwards, everyone was bending over to help the 'oppressed blacks' and the Koreans realized that they needed to be represented politically as well so they wouldn't be trampled again.

115 It's funny how the mind works. Last night, after the riot in Ferguson had started, I was flipping back and forth between news and the Ravens game. Suddenly 4-5 fire engines, sirens screaming and moving at a good clip, roar by my house. The local VFD is about a mile away, and it's not unusual for them to use my street if they are responding to the Parkville side of Towson, but 4 engines is a full response from the station.

Now, I live in a peaceful suburb of Baltimore, and the scheduled protest was downtown today, not last night anywhere near me, so it's unlikely they're going there. However, shortly thereafter, the motion sensor controlled light in the back yard goes on, which it does not infrequently in response to wildlife of various sorts. The the phone and internet go down and the dog starts a non specific chuffing at the windows and back door.

Thoroughly spooked, I make a circuit of the house, checking all ingress and egress points and windows with a cocked and locked SW in my hand.

It was nothing. Everything's secure, the phone and internet come back in about 10 minutes and the motion light cycles off. The dog is just an idiot, he probably saw a threatening leaf blow by. About an hour later the fire engines return, normal speed without lights. There are no riots within a hundred miles. I knew it would be nothing. I felt slightly silly, walking around my own house, in my peaceful suburb, heeled as if the James Gang was about to ride by on their way out of Northfield.

It's funny the way the mind works, isn't it?

116 As harrowing as those '92 riots look to have, and as destructive as the urban riots of the lat 1960s that destroyed vast swaths of the Democrat strongholds, that have yet to be rebuilt, what happened just north of us, up in Gudbrandsdahl township a few yesrs ago, would give the strongest man the vapors.
The majority wanted it spelled "lutefisk", but there was a vocal minority who insisted on "lutfisk". Karen & I were neutral (but we do get excercised about putting enough butter in the mashed 'baga). Oh, my goodness, but it was ugly! I think some of them may have come close to losing their Salvation, but it is evil to speculate on what is Our Lord's bissness.
The compromise was "Annual Big Dinner at the Lutherans. Good Food, Good Price, Fine Cause!"
I'm proud to say it was Karen's idea to sell shots of Aalborg Akvavit at an inflated price in the parking lot between two crewcab F-350s after dark... which is about 4:45pm that time of year.

148 Ok, here are more details about my prayer request last night:

Our unmarried niece just told us she is pregnant. She is planning to marry the father, but it is possible that this may be a mistake.

Today, I asked my husband about NOT PRESSURING HER AT ALL but being available as potential adoptive parents. I do not think offering would offend her, but there's only about a 1% chance of her even considering it. But sometimes a person feels less trapped in a situation if there is an alternative.

There are pros and cons for us, of course. The main consideration is whether both of us wish to make such a huge commitment. Turns out my husband is less interested than I am, which would rule out the possibility.

I always wanted children, but couldn't conceive. This has been a source of sorrow for me. He doesn't feel this because he has a daughter by his first wife.

Of course, once again, I would NEVER pressure my niece even though I would love to adopt.

136 You might start with a search for Hurst shiftersOnce you have located a nest of the shifters you have to remember, Silver and garlic don't work. Kinetic shock and fire is what kills 'em. Remember, if you loose visual contact with them you'll have to start all over, and whatever you do don't let your backup get out of sight, the last thing you want in a hairy situation is to figure whether what is coming up after you in a dark passage way is your bud or if it is a soulless puddle of goo that ate your best friend's face.

I wonder if the courts will view it that way as well.

I had a counselor tell me about a wonderful new prison program that was achieving amazing results because the victims were confronting the criminals and telling the criminals just how bad/scared/upset the crime made the victims feel. 259 I'm just plain drunk, folks. I'd like to correct every bit of everything at this moment. I'd like to go Full Pedant, so as to "correct" everything.

I never graduated college. My tenses don't agree.

-My flaws are plentiful.

Those of you who have read my posts know that I am an idiot.

There are certain things that get under my skin and I am a douche-bag for noticing them. ...indeed.

(Ace even made a post about "calling people out" for minor English infractions.)

There are some things that I have pardoned, allowed, endured and simply not commented upon; however.

-"Breathe" is a verb. It describes what happens when you take air in and out of your lungs.

-"Breath" is a noun. It describes your vile CO2 output. It is a singular event.

-"Too" means "also".

-"To" describes a direction.

-Plural words don't need apostrophes.

-"Plural" means "more than one."

-Apostrophes are only needed when showing possession or contraction:

-"Contraction" is a simplification of two words.
..."can not" becomes "can't".
..."will not" becomes "won't".
..."may not" [isn't "mayn't".
..."is not" becomes "isn't".

Possessives are fairly easy. If it "owned"? If it is, it usually has an apostrophe:

..."Jim's" shit is in the cooler.
...The "family's" intent was pure.
...China's inclination is world domination.

Other possessives are more subtle:

"Their" asses wound up like prey to my lawnmower.

...Which brings up another point.

-"Their and Our" are possessive.

-"There" is location-based.

-"They're" is a contraction. It is a shortened version of "They Are".

-"Too" means "also".

-"To" is direction-based.

-"Two" is a number.

-"It's" is a contraction of It Is..

-Its is possessive.

Please stick this up your ass and think about it. The Cobs often do. They know how to write.

...except "The Dude". His excuse is that he always has content that I want to read.

Some of you posters need to "Shape-Up" as Conservatives. I'm simply looking out for your best interests.

...not "you're" best interests.

Fuck me running. I really am a simplified, pedantic douche-bag.

I've got beer and wings, however. I'm going to be okay.

Well, speaking as one member of an infertile couple, at some point we determined that all of these invasive "tests" to "cure" our issue were really just a source of unmitigated pain and stress. We took that energy and worked on adopting or son from Guatemala. He looks nothing like either of us and we couldn't give a rat's fat ass. Neither could he.

Adoption cures a great many ills. It is not a substitute for conceiving your own--you still need to grieve that part, and I'm not sure it ever actually heals--but it makes a family quite complete.

The hybrid thing doesn't bug me that much, so long as they don't go full retard with it...like tentacles and other random oddness, which the director says they didn't do. Especially doesn't bug me because a lot of them were already hybrids because of the frog DNA caps. Riddle me this Batmen and Batchicks, what are the peaceful protesters trying to accomplish? Do they really think 300 people walking with signs down the street is going to create some kind of situation where a police won't fire if he feels his life threatened or do they think they will influence future jurors to string up innocent men?

My guess is it is just to make themselves feel better.

Hubbymayhem and I have 2 spawn. Elder of the two is the boy spawn. He will be 20yrs old in Feb. His biological father passed away when he was 2. I was a young widow and it took me a while to find the right man to be the boy's new dad. But, the man loves the boy like he would his own flesh and blood child and the boy spawn acts just like his dad frequently.
2nd of the chillrens is the girl. She will be 9yrs old in Jan. Hubbymayhem and I tried to get a second spawn the old fashioned way.... (booze and pron induced mayhem) but all we got was a miscarriage. Heartbreaking. We went for the adoption route. Our little girl is from China. If you tell her she is Chinese, she will glare at you and say "No I'm not, I'm American. I was just made in China" She acts like her dad too.
Hubby does not have any biological children but he has two kids of his own. Does not matter how ya get 'em, once they are yours, they are yours.

It's funny how the mind works. Last night, after the riot in Ferguson
had started, I was flipping back and forth between news and the Ravens
game. Suddenly 4-5 fire engines, sirens screaming and moving at a good
clip, roar by my house. The local VFD is about a mile away, and it's not
unusual for them to use my street if they are responding to the
Parkville side of Towson, but 4 engines is a full response from the
station.

Now, I live in a peaceful suburb of Baltimore, and the
scheduled protest was downtown today, not last night anywhere near me,
so it's unlikely they're going there. However, shortly thereafter, the
motion sensor controlled light in the back yard goes on, which it does
not infrequently in response to wildlife of various sorts. The the phone
and internet go down and the dog starts a non specific chuffing at the
windows and back door.

Thoroughly spooked, I make a circuit of
the house, checking all ingress and egress points and windows with a
cocked and locked SW in my hand.

It was nothing. Everything's
secure, the phone and internet come back in about 10 minutes and the
motion light cycles off. The dog is just an idiot, he probably saw a
threatening leaf blow by. About an hour later the fire engines return,
normal speed without lights. There are no riots within a hundred miles. I
knew it would be nothing. I felt slightly silly, walking around my own
house, in my peaceful suburb, heeled as if the James Gang was about to
ride by on their way out of Northfield.

It's funny the way the mind works, isn't it?

Or this:

Sen. Rand Paul made a renewed call for reforming the criminal-justice system after a Ferguson, Missouri, grand jury opted not to indict Officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of Michael Brown. Paul said in an interview Tuesday that he didnt have "specific thoughts on the actual decision",. But the Kentucky Republican did say the situation reflects an "undercurrent of unease out there related to poverty, related to drugs." He added, "I think part of the answer is trying to reform our criminal justice system."

or from the Huff:

"Republican lawmakers have, by and large, stayed silent in the aftermath"

Silence or hand-wringing isn't going to persuade anyone.

348 72 othoFile me under cautiously optimistic. The take on an open park looked fairly realistic to me (like last time I was at MGM and Disney). Especially the Mosasaur clip, where everyone's got their smartphones out.The hybrid thing doesn't bug me that much, so long as they don't go full retard with it...like tentacles and other random oddness, which the director says they didn't do. Especially doesn't bug me because a lot of them were already hybrids because of the frog DNA caps. At least they didn't go dino-human supersoldier hybrid route, like a couple of attempts to do a 4th movie did before they canned it.

Posted by: Ranba Ral at November 26, 2014 12:07 AM

Yeah, I feel the same way. Interested, but not gonna get my hopes up. I hear you loud and clear on the "super soldier" crap. But, the "hybrid" thing does bug me, as it comes across as the producer/s still wanted to go nuts with the dna stuff as per the JP4 script and settled on this instead of the incredibly stupid super soldier crap. The thing with the original stories was that they combined dna to simply make the recreation possible... to get as close to the originals as they could... not make weirdo shit. If this is all being done by Dodson's rival company, I might understand it, but the park was Hammond/Ingen's vision. Biosyn had no interest in that field. I was hoping for something along Crichton's take, that remants would manage to continue, but in remote location/s.

Was hoping for some kind of return to site B and get a proper treatment of "Lost World" (a remake that did the book justice would be great, but I know it's not gonna happen) I don't mind the watering down of the books so much, IF the story is done well and you get a fun dino attack flick out of it. JP1 was a good example. JP2 was a dire mangling of the book and apart from some moments, didn't work so well (san Diego I'm looking at you). JP3 was not perfect (vocalizing raptos= dumb)... but, it was a blast on the big screen and a simple adventure yarn. I liked it.

I hope this isn't a Hollywood "reboot" of JP... coz it kinda looks like it. Thumbs up for Chris Pratt though. I'll give it a shot just for that.

Halfway through the potluck, some random Indian guy I never met had stopped in for a bite. Liberally spread the hot sauce on whatever he was eating and bit into it. TURNED RED before everyone figured out what happened and broke out laughing.

But ask most academics and the answer to scientific funding woes is a near-universal "give more monies", not that the NIH and NSF have fallen into the trap that all government agencies encounter - mission creep and general corruption.

Guess I'm just chopped liver.

I never cared about finding my "real" parents, my real parents raised me. Then at age 35 I got a letter from a detective agency, they were looking for people born at such and such place on so and so date. I called them, and after a few questions they told me they had been hired by my birth mom to contact me and let me know that if I wanted, they would give me her contact info, but if not that was OK too. I said sure, then called her and said "Hey, I haven't seen you in about 35 years. What you been up to?".

This was right before I married Gingy. I insisted that she come for the wedding, although she was reluctant. I told her "You wanted it, you got it, you're my mom, come". I sat her at the table with my folks. I introduced them "Mom, this is mom. Mom, mom". They get along great.

So now I have two moms, and I didn't even have to live in a children's lesbian indoctrination book to get 'em.

Only fly in the ointment is that mom is a *retch* lib. Ex-semi-hippy type, although that side of the family is pretty solidly conservative, lots of military roots. My Grandad was shot down over France in WWII and escaped VIA the French resistance. So I try to avoid politics with mom, although she very nearly made me toss her back out of my life in '12.

483 .The thing with the original stories was that they
combined dna to simply make the recreation possible... to get as close
to the originals as they could... not make weirdo shit.

Posted by: otho

====

Well, yes and no. Remember how the dinosaurs had version numbers in the book? Per the discussion in Hammond's Bungalow between Hammond and Wu, some of that was to change behavior, help fight diseases, development rates, etc. Wu wanted to tinker around with other DNA caps to made 1980's fat/slow/stupid/tail-dragging stereotype dinosaurs because that's what the public would expect at the time the book was written (and, well, IRL until the first movie came out). Hammond wouldn't let him because he insisted they were making them as realistic as possible. Wu was like 'um, no, we can only analyze the skeletons for accuracy as they grow, on all other fronts we're just pulling this out our asses'. Not a huge leap to think that they'd start screwing around like that if Wu got his way.

Possibly a better way to have handled it would be growing an unknown sample gets them something nobody's found a fossil of. Has the bonus of fitting with the books (the hatchery table marked with X in the species name plate), and not outside the realm of possibility, seeing as how many new species we keep finding all the time.

Also, from the viral promotion site and stuff put out in interviews, a rival company bought out InGen's assets after it went bankrupt after Lost World and finished the mostly-built park. So, reboot-ish in that you get the original park/island again and dinos break out (SURPRISE!). Based on the name and some of those plot points, I actually thought it was going to be a movie of one of the sequel comics released back when the original movie came out, where Tim Murphy, as an adult, makes a park and things (SURPRISE!) go askew after it opens.

==
I was hoping for something along Crichton's take, that remants would manage to continue, but in remote location/s.

===

That would've been cool too. One of the early pre-production phases they entered into years ago had that as the plot, but they canned it. Probably not enough dinosaur types for the producers or something.

Though, personally, I'd like to see a closer to the novels reboot of both the books. The river sequence in the first has so much potential.

484 From the liberationnews' about us page:

"The Party for Socialism and Liberation seeks to bring together leaders and organizers from the many struggles taking place across the country. The most crucial requirement for membership is the dedication to undertake this most important and most necessary of all tasks-building a new revolutionary workers' party in the heart of world imperialism.

At the same time as we aim for revolution in this country, we stand for defense of the existing workers' states, the national liberation movements, and for workers and oppressed people around the world. The magnitude of our tasks will be matched by our determination to win."

From the Answer Coalition:

"Founded just three days after the September 11, 2001 attacks, ANSWER (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) initiated the massive U.S. antiwar movement opposing the U.S.invasion of Iraq in the months prior to March 19, 2003.

...

ANSWER, which at its core included a partnership between Arab and non-Arab activists, fought a long and successful battle against excluding the Palestinian struggle for self-determination from the anti-war and peace movement. In the years since, we have mobilized across the country to stop the repeated assaults against and massacres of the people of Gaza."

I always thought the ankylosaurus looked seriously improbable. And, yes, I mean from a very young age -- I had a set of plastic dinosaurs before I could even read, and the names were stamped along the side of the bellies. So I could recognize "ANKYLOSAURUS" before I could pronounce it.

511 Funny story about the RK riots. I had just delivered a load of penny's from the Denver mint to the San Francisco Federal Reserve bank in SF. I picked up some empty coin racks there and was dispatched to pick up more racks from Wells Fargo in LA and Phoenix. I stopped in Monterrey to have dinner and was watching the tv in the truck stop. It showed Reginald Denny getting dragged out of his truck and some asshole slamming a big piece of metal into his head. So I head south and stop for the night in Ventura. I get up the next morning and head over to Wells Fargo to pick up the empty coin carriers. Because of traffic, I'm ten minutes late getting the Wells Fargo facility. I figured that I'd back up to the dock, get my load and get the hell out of there. But no. This little Hispanic prick with sergeant stripes on his uniform comes out and says that because I'm ten minutes late he is not going to load me. I tell him that out of an abundance of caution, I had stayed overnight further north out of the danger zone, and traffic had tied me up. He said that he didn't care and there was no danger here. I went to the Union 76 truck stop out in Orange county and spent the night. I came back the next morning at precisely 7:00 am to pick up my load. By then the riots are in full swing. Same little Hispanic prick comes out and says that they are not going to load me because it's just too damn dangerous. In fact, they had guys on the roof with AR15's and the same with the perimeter. Words cannot describe how pissed off I was with that self important little prick. I go back to the truck stop and call my dispatcher. He sends me to Compton to a warehouse to pick up half a load of motorcycles. Funny thing. There were warehouses three blocks away that were on fire from the riots. Lesson learned? Never give a short, vertically challenged self important Hispanic little prick sergeant stripes. He'll f*ck you every time just to show you how impotent he is.

Yeah, you're right about the modification stuff. I remember that angle, it was Hammond vs Wu and Wu wanted to tinker further... but my recollection is that it was more in regards behavioural traits than physical ones. There was some interest in modifying them to be pets and whatnot (Biosyn? or, Wu and Biosyn both? or just Wu? Can't recall) But fusing different dna to make some frankenstein? That never factored into anyone's plans. So Ingen's been taken over and it's been relaunched? Ok, That works. Apparently the hybrid is being done to goose tickets. That sounds like a Biosyn type angle, so I guess that could work... but it just seems unnecessary to the story and seems forced (Producer: "I still want a Trex raptor cross! Write it in, dammit! The kid's will dig it!")

I like your answer re the unknown type/s being grown and it makes more sense. That was supposed to be how they ended up with a Spinosaurus. So, something along those lines would make a better story and still work within the background of the books. I'm still waiting for the Carnotaurs, dammit! One of the coolest bits from the original books!

535 There are many other rear engined cars, notably porches and most race cars. There are real advantages to having the motor over the drive wheels for traction, but handling can be difficult due to the tendency to oversteer (spin out) while cornering so it takes excellent driving to handle powerful cars.

Random silly wordplay on an ONT???? It's usually either me or Slap.

When I was in Junior High, some friends and I came up with a game we called "THIMK!" for when we were biking around. It was a word-association game where you'd have to play words off of the previous guy's word, played to hold the lowest score. There were three ways to get points -- timing out/going blank was 10 points; repeating a word previously played (in any context) was 5 points; and a non sequitur was 2 points. The idea was to herd someone into a zone where they'd get derailed. Any number could play.

Classic sort of play was: "green"; "blue"; "orange"; "banana"; "cherry"; "vintage"; "winecellar"; "kitchen"; "counter"; "variable"; "constant"; "forever"; "eternal"; "art"; "dave"; "jack"; "wagon"......er....."pretzel"!

Non-sequitur, two points.

I was a "special case" for my High School Counselor. My American History teacher threw me out of class one day because he called upon me to read from the textbook and I didn't have it with me. So I go to the counselor's office, she reads the note, looks at me and says, "ok, what's the deal?" I said, "I read the entire book in the first two weeks of class, it's got a large proportion of garbage, the book weighs about 50 pounds, and my locker's out on the back-edge of nowhere. So I don't bring it to class and pass all the tests."

She thinks for a bit and says, "can you do this, for me? Stick it on the shelf right there" -- pointing to an empty spot in a bookshelf next to her door -- "and take it to Mr. XXXXXX's class. It's only 50 feet. Just for this semester."

Hey, it saved me a half-mile hike with the damned thing, and she asked nicely.....so that's what I did for the remainder of the class.

This was in HS, so it was probably around '77. The graft-laden California textbook racket would have INSISTED on purchasing new textbooks regularly, so I'm pretty sure they had.

cthulhu, I used to turn in a weekly report of the errors in the textbook
to my AP American History teacher in HS. He eventually made it a class
policy that you couldnt use the textbook as a reference for papers -
like a old timey wikipedia policy.

612 Hmm... a nice, to-the-point press conference.

I was also pleased to see a modestly-dressed police chief... only wearing Colonel's eagles for his rank.

Nothing screams 'I'm a politically appointed chief of police' like some bozo wearing 4 stars and tarted up like a turd-world dictator.

The common thread was that it was quieter than last night (ya think!?!); and, that the authorities were 'caught off guard' by the scope of last night's unrest.

It's pretty damn obvious that the presence of the National Guard also made a difference... their being on hand meant more cops freed up to bust heads if things got out of hand.

That, and blocking the roads to limit the 'opportunity shoppers' that had the run of streets last night...

California was, and is, corrupt. Districts threw perfectly good textbooks in the trash every summer so somebody's cousin could get a kickback on the purchase of a new batch. Then, they made students handle 'em like Holy Artifacts and cover 'em with custom wrappings made from paper grocery bags....and next year, there would be new ones.
