Let's keep something in mind here, though. The reason they picked Hagel was, according to top Obama political operative Bill Burton, because Obama's goal for the Defense Department during his last years in office is to impose "huge cuts" in U.S. military spending. In those exact words. Huge cuts.
Burton went on to say that Hagel, as a Republican and as a combat vet, was needed to provide a fig leaf for those "huge cuts". That was the rationale for Upchuck. Not because of competence or any other factor. Just for optics.
Do not expect the underlying aim to change regardless of whom the new SECDEF turns out to be.

There was a flap just recently about one of those "objective, independent, neutral, nonpartisan" Beltway think tanks, the Truman National Security Project.
Of course, as the vast majority of these things are, it's just a sinecure for various Democratic hacks in between cushy government and media gigs.
So the "objective, independent, neutral, nonpartisan" team at Truman got caught circulating an incriminating e-mail. In which they were trying to gin up a JournoList style coordinated backchannel campaign to help plump for Obama's ridiculous Iran deal.
Via having the usual suspects submit glowing op-ed pieces to friendly media outlets in which the Obama plan for Iran would be glowingly praised.
This is just the usual Democrat-Media Complex shitweasellery at work, but what will make things interesting is that it *just* happened a few days ago, and the shortlisted Flournoy happens to be on the board of advisors of the Truman Project.

But anyway, Hagel was chosen because he was a Republican and a fool. Hagel was chosen, primarily, to be the Republican sec-def to usher in homosexual military personnel.

Uhh, there were 500 tickets given out for free yesterday and they were gone in ten minutes. The Detroit Free Press said that some of those who got the free tickets(limited to two) were immediately out in front of Ford Field, scalping them , asking for $125.
Unless there has been a change, that is the extent of the free tickets.

What's more, just to show how awful obama is and how badly he used Hagel, obama fires him!
It's pretty rare that a president does this. He usually allows for the cabinet member to submit his resignation and makes sure that the headlines read as such.
There's a big difference bewtween "obama accepts Hagel's resignation" and "obama asks for Hagel's resignation."
For instance, Sebelius wasn't, according to the news/history, driven out of town under a cloud of shame. They let her pretend to resign...and obama pretended to accept it reluctantly.
Hagel is getting a far different treatment. He's being thrown out quite publicly.

Hagel's purpose was to be the fig leaf and trick Repubs into going along with huge cuts to defense spending and various social engineering schemes for the military (ie, fewer icky straight white dudes with their stuff about honor and duty and manly ways).
