Early Morning Thread 11/23/14: Something Borrowed, Something Blue edition [krakatoa]

Happy Sunday, gentle morons.

UPDATE: EMT now fortified with 50% more working links.

We'll get back to this:

Han Purple.jpg

Parents of Pro Hockey Defenseman Jack Johnson have borrowed their way into strong consideration for Worst Parents of the Year. Johnson was forced to file for bankruptcy after his loving folks borrowed 15 million dollars against his future earnings from "nonconventional" lenders. My folks were bad with money, but I like to think that if I'd hit on some real income, they'd have had better judgement than to go to a guy named Nicky "Kneecaps" Graziani for a payday loan.

Emperor Qin Shi Huang did it in two dimensions. Or at least his artists did. Han Purple (the color at the top of the post) has some really fascinating traits under 4 degrees Kelvin.

Hope the rest of your day is better than Jack's and warmer than a terracotta warrior in a science lab.

There are some beautiful pieces of casting at the Smithsonian, intricate bird cages and such, with working hinged doors, that were cast in China around that time (I think...). There must have been some serious chemistry education going on somewhere there.

You could read the piece over at Breitbart in which Michelle Bachmann claims the Republicans in Congress have decided to stand up to Choom Boy's treason by letting him get away with it....

I've long felt that "Republicans" are as dangerous as the Choom Gang, and this proves it.

Mass arrests are the only answer. At least the only answer that doesn't involve situations we don't want to think about.

37 Sorry about the bad link. I swear it was working last night when I put this in draft and/or was on my 3rd or 6th draught.

I feel ya, Rudolph. I went to bed last night looking forward to working out this morning.

I woke up sore from crawling around beneath the house insulating pipes, and ended up going the Talibill route. I am currently going all 7th century on a cup of coffee.

Which is to say, I'm drinking it while my wife & baby sleep in. Because there's nothing quite so nice as some lone krak/t time in the living room easy-chair while the house is quiet.

38 Delta Airlines has given its approval of TFG's dictatorial amnesty. It's one thing to stay mute but when businesses proactively come out in support, it exposes why even "pro business" Republicans are as much of the problem as TFG and his ilk. See Ocare for another example.

44 Morning!

My son was in the First Lego League robotics competition yesterday with his rookie team, competing with 23 other teams, some of them veterans.

They got first place! Woooooot!!!!

They somehow got lucky during their last of three runs and managed to edge out the top team and beat them by 8 points. The scoring works by taking the best run out of three. We had no idea we'd even place in the top half. Now they get to go to the State competition in January. We still have a couple of the challenges to fine tune, but they look good.

Woot woot!!!

Dean Kamen created the FLL competition for kids to build Lego robots and do certain tasks within 2.5 minutes. They have to send the robot out and let it run by itself, no intervention. It has to pathfind and do the tasks all on its own.

This is what I wanted, too, at one time.

But then I realized that a third party would instantly be marginalized and attacked -- not by Democrats, but by Poppin' Fresh and the rest of the eunuchs among the Konservative Komment Kommandos -- and would take decades (or more) to even begin to gain a foothold.

We don't have decades left to start righting the ship. We've hit the iceberg, and are already taking on too much water.

Besides, you don't eliminate a crime family by starting a new crime family. Not if your interest is stopping crime, anyway.

114 Srsly, MrScribbler, your points are good, but the levels of discontent I see everyday are such that I think there is a huge void that a 3rd party could fill almost instantly.
Think Republican vs. Whig in 1860.
I would personally like to see what I am calling (in my own head) the "Voltaire" party, based on his saying about "your right to say it"; specifically having no policy beyond restoration of Constitutional liberty and dismantling the administrative state. Discussion of all the circular-firing-squad issues we all love to wrangle about to be intentionally deferred until after that is accomplished. All too soon we will no longer be able to have the discussion about abortions or drugs or whatever.

"If we do not hang together, we will all assuredly hang separately."

On that basis I would be willing to cooperate with a lot of people I would not otherwise. Let's save the Republic so we can go back to yelling at each other in peace (and prosperity!).

Sorry about the TLR, but this has been on my mind a lot lately and it needed to get out.

120 From Allen on the group
So, this afternoon we were at a roller skating rink for a birthday party for one of my son's friends.

Like an idiot, I, who have not worn roller skates in well over 20 years, decided to rent some skates and get out into the rink.

While trying to get my legs used to skating again, a little girl in front of me took a spill. Rather than run her over, I veered sharply away and fell. I caught myself with my left arm.

Physics and my arm fought, and my arm lost. I have a broken humerus and an appointment on Tuesday with an Ortho because I may well need surgery to repair it.

I'd like to ask the Horde for prayers for myself, but more for my wife since she'll now be having to take care of me in addition to being effectively a single parent to our kids.

Thanks,
AllenG "

Well, Cosby was well-known as a frequent visitor to the Playboy mansion where-

wanna-be starlets, models, playmates all allowed frequent access to their nether parts to stars, producers, agents, politicians, etc for possible access to the big time.

Obviously, this business plan didn't work out for all of them. And some may be bitter about it.

My understanding is for both women and men open access to your nether regions may be the road to stardom in Hollywood.

So, except for the drugging aspect this sounds like business as usual for a Hollywood star like Cosby.

but, I dunno may be true maybe not, I just keep thinking somehow this is a scheme to once again spread Bill Clinton's crappy moral character over the rest of us for his and the harridan's political benefit.

The coach was using a USB cable to upload the programs.

Word to the wise, EC - the coach, or any other adult, isn't supposed to do jack shit once the team is on the competition floor. Major loss of points if caught doing so. Which is not to say s/he cannot help load the program before the team takes the field.

As for cable vs. wifi to deliver the program - a cable is far more reliable than wifi. Stick with what works under practically all circumstances.

Congratulations on your eldest sin's accomplishment. As he continues to live the Scout Oath and Law everyday, he will grow to see how significant an accomplishment earning Eagle rank was when he was younger. As for his brother, perhaps your new Eagle Scout is in a better position to motivate him than you are. See if you can enlist him in the cause.

My own Eagle rejoined his/my Troop for our October camping trip. Meeting and interacting with someone closer to their age who had earned the rank really took hold with some of the youths. I am asked nearly every other week, "When is Mike coming back to see us?" Twice in December, for sure, and perhaps for our week at summer camp, which would thrill me, too.

234 Good morning. Yesterday was pretty busy. I vacuumed the leaves in the front yard with the lawnmower, then changed the oil and put it away for the winter. I still have most of the back yard to do, which will have to be done the old-fashioned way, i.e. by rake. But it was getting late and I didn't have enough time to do the whole back yard by mower, and I wanted to get it winterized before dusk.

But I'm tired. I don't know if I will do it today, although the weather is nice. I've done it on Thanksgiving Day in the past when necessary, but it's going to be colder this time.

248 Then after the leaves, I went to see Bob Dylan at the Academy of Music in Philly. I described it in the ONT at 1:44 am, and there are some interesting links.

I hate driving and parking in the city. Everybody else seems to know where they are going and are determined to get there in a damn hurry. Me, I'm practically lost as soon as I exit the interstate. I get disoriented on city streets. I'm never sure which way I'm facing.

When I bought the ticket online, there was an option to buy a ticket for a parking garage, so I took it. I figured that would make things easier. But when I got there, there were parking garages all over the place, and I couldn't figure out which one was mine! I overshot the area where it was supposed to be, and with the streets all being one-way, I had to loop around for a second attempt. I was burning precious time, and Bob is very punctual.

The second time, I stopped and asked an attendant if this was the right place, with horns blaring behind me. He told me where to go, and I got my car parked.

But after going around and around in the garage, when I exited I wasn't sure which street I was on, and which way the theater was. I was about to have an aneurism by this point.

I asked a young couple passing by, and they said to follow them. They were on their way to the concert too! When we arrived at the entrance, I thanked them profusely and went to my seat. The concert started the moment I sat down.

Can you tell that driving and parking in the city is very very stressful for me?

I'd like to think that, but the truth is I do not believe this is the case. Remember these people are reliable mouthpieces for statism and also hate both the constitution and people like us who believe in the rule of law and conservatism. They are also not very funny, and not very smart.
To believe that they have started to wake up and smell the totalitarianism is a bit of a stretch - not impossible, but I would say, hard to believe.
No, I believe they are, in their own way, simply making fun of us and people who believe the constitution is sacred. I could be wrong, and that would be nice. But here's the thing; if they were truly behind the 'this is a bad idea' thing, I think the content of this skit would be far more scathing and direct. I could think of lots of ways they might depict in a comedic way, that this is a bad idea.
And beyond all that, like I tried to say above, a crime like this is nothing but dead serious shit to me. I have no sense of humor AT ALL about the theft of my liberty and that of my children and fellow citizens. Maybe I am being an old humorless fart, but if that's the case I have no problem with that. Deploying communism all over the land from sea to shining sea, stealing healthcare from my disabled child, my parents, and myself, stealing my families food and infecting all of us with Peruvian Polio and Ebola, is just not something I can laugh about ever.

255 dang prophet... that sounds awful. Hang in there and hope you're healed up soon. I laid my bike down ten years ago and didn't "break" anything, but my shoulder and ribs took a severe mashy. Can't imagine breaking all that. Sorry about your bike.. glad you lived.

What type of GPS module do you have?

Your segment display, is it common anode or common cathode? Posted by: Kreplach

Sorry, stepped away and got busy,

GPS: Adafruit Ultimate Breakout (tx,rx,+,-)
7 Seg: 2 digit 7 Seg. cc
Board: Adafruit Arduino Uno

I have to hop but will check back in a while... thanks for any ideas. I have some limited experience in Arduino, one year(?).

259 @254... baby steps Mrs. Ida... baby steps. Ridicule is the one thing the donks almost never suffer from their own. And we'll never, ever get parity from entertainers/writers/Hollywood/NY. Never. It is dead-serious, but it's like trying to talk to a 20 years old about finances or insurance.. sure maybe 15 to 20% of them understand what you're talking about or inherently understand... but most of them can't imagine planning for the future much less risk analysis... they'll do that stuff when they're older OR when they marry and start a family.

So not everyone "cares" about the big issues... they should, and some right do, but it's a stage of life thing.. and education, and give-a-damn. and they'll always be prob 30% who will never care about anything that doesn't directly affect them, day to day.

Read the side link to SFgate's article on Marion Berry. Absolutely unbelieveable life of being on the take and worshipped in spite.
And we really think that Democrats and the majority of blacks in their caucus will be on board with impeaching or in any way taking down Obama....
Berry was censured by City Council just last year for taking cash from city contractors.......

I'll take a look at those components and see what the best method to interface them would be.

This GPS device does it need to be run off batteries so it's portable or is it for a car and can be run off of car power, etc?

You'll need a way to drive the display and a way to sink the power. So you'll need a shift register and a UNL28xx type IC to sink the displays. But I'll check out the components.

Call it the Constitutional Party. Then you could refer to all your opponents as "unconstitutional". Which indeed they are. Seems to me that there is a window of opportunity here for a third party. If the donks run Hillary, who is a contemptible person, and the GOP run some squish like Jeb Bush, or Romney redux, then a solid Constitutional Party candidate might have a chance.

268 So, except for the drugging aspect this sounds like business as usual for a Hollywood star like Cosby.

but, I dunno may be true maybe not, I just keep thinking somehow
this is a scheme to once again spread Bill Clinton's crappy moral
character over the rest of us for his and the harridan's political
benefit.

Posted by: naturalfake at November 23, 2014 08:44 AM (KBvAm)

The drugging aspect doesn't ring true to me. The usual roofie scenario goes: predator meets woman in bar, slips roofie into her drink, unbeknownst to her, and when she becomes disoriented and suggestible, he ushers her back to his den to have his way with her.

At least one of these broads says Cosby and her went back to her room, at which point he gave her a pill, which she accepted, and they began to have sex. Look, as soon as they agreed to go the hotel room, either party's room, it's a done deal. The pill is unnecessary. Why drug her when she has already agreed to engage in sex? And why would a woman, about to have sex with a famous idol, want to take any kind of drug that might impair the experience?

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at November 23, 2014 10:56 AM (7MWCL)

269 Larry the Cable Guy tweets about Cosby: "Honest question? How come Cosby is toast and Clinton is toast of the town? That's a fair question is it not?"

A lot more about why Cosby, why now: (remove space)

270 Cosby went off the reservation a few years ago and fought with leftist orthodoxy. There will not be any mercy for him, unlike many others with just as bad records.

I am increasingly cynical.

I've got the circuit figured out on a breadboard, with AA, BB, CC, DD, EE, FF, GG and the two cathodes to multiplex. The whole board is powered by its USB at this point but it will be moved to my motorcycle later. Somewhere there are two transistors, plus resistors for each LED segment (no decimal).

What I know is that the NMEA string needs to be parsed, in my case for just the speed component, and then displayed across the two digits, with some time delays for refresh/ghosting/brightness control. But it's the parsing and multiplexing / array coding that is the bugger. I AM NOT asking anyone to write this for me; just need some pointers. I've had limited success in backwards engineering a count-down timer to 7-seg, and can read the nmea string through a serial-to-computer setup from code that's available at aurdino dot cc. Short question is should I just go buy one of those C++ 500 page tomes and start reading? Thanks.
