Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Overnight Open Thread, 11-22-2014 -- My Hometown EditionHello there, fellow Morons. It's been a while since our paths crossed. Once again, your regular contributor to this space has drummed up some cockamamie excuse to shirk his duties and left the heavy lifting to the resident RINO so he can gallivant with drunkards and whores. But, that's OK. It's Saturday night. And, if I weren't doing this, I'd just be sitting around the house wishing I could be out gallivanting with drunkards and whores. So, knowing I had to come up with something to fill this space in his absence, I decided to get out and do something that could plausibly be described as productive. As anyone who knows me will readily attest, that's a big breakthrough for me when it comes to my typical weekend activities. You see, I'm an irredeemable layabout by nature. Today, though, I thought I'd get out and take a few photos by way of introduction to the little corner of the world I inhabit. As some of you may know, I live in the far reaches of western Kentucky, not far from the confluence of the Mississippi and the Ohio River. It's a largely rural area populated by mostly friendly folk, albeit sparsely -- the sort of place where people wave or raise an acknowledging finger as you pass them while driving down the road. And when those people speak of going to "town", they're talking about Paducah. You may not have heard of this bustling metropolis of 25,000 (give or take) or know how to pronounce it (puh-DOO-kuh) -- and that's just fine. The people of Paducah are perfectly content with their anonymity. In fact, the biggest annual event that draws attention from far-flung corners of the earth -- the annual American Quilters Society convention -- strikes fear and loathing in the hearts of the local population. It seems the town will never quite come to terms with the yearly onslaught of marauding, blue-haired, wrong-way drivers clogging the local highways and byways. But, once that week passes and people settle back into their normal routines, they luxuriate in the relative bliss of obscurity. Of course, that doesn't mean Paducahans are unwelcoming of visitors. Quite the contrary, in fact. They're actually quite friendly to those who hail from the hinterlands, provided they don't arrive in throngs. And, if you should find yourself traveling through the area on I-24, feel free to stop in for a bit and have a bite to eat. While it may not be the go-to city for five-star dining, for a town its size, Paducah is overflowing with culinary options. But, if you're looking for a memorable culinary experience, don't limit yourself to the chain restaurants and franchises that line the main thoroughfares just off the interstate. You'd be cheating yourself badly. Every part of the country thinks it has a lock on the "Best Burger Anywhere" title. But, unless that part of the country includes Paducah, Kentucky -- well, they're wrong. Because, you see, that title goes to Just Hamburgers. I've had In-N-Out. I've had Five Guys. And, while I admittedly have yet to try a Whataburger, I don't need to. I've had Just Hamburgers, and they can't be beat. Below, you'll see the Buffalo Burger. Normally it would be adorned with bleu cheese crumbles, but they'd run out of it today, so I substituted it with gouda. It was so good that when I finished it, I felt compelled to compromise my virtue. Not only are their burgers the best in the galaxy, their t-shirts are the coolest you'll find anywhere. Robert Waller is the most recent of three generations of owner-operators, and he's made his own unique mark on the business while maintaining the high standards of the previous generations, including fresh-grinding the beef in-house daily -- twice if needed -- and sticking to the same fifty-year-old family secret mix of spices. Do yourself a favor: Go there. Do that. Buy the t-shirt. Say you find yourself in Paducah with a hankerin' for epicurean debauchery, but it's too early for burgers. Perhaps you're looking for a Krispy Kreme franchise. Sorry. You're out of luck in this town. There ain't one. But, at the same time, you're in luck. Because, you just happen to be in the town where the recipe for Krispy Kreme originated, and the home of the donut shop that perfected it: Red's Donuts. Once you've tried the real thing, you will throw rocks at the North Carolina-based pretenders. Behold the sinful delicacy that has become the institution for fried pastries in Paducah and set the standard for sugar-glazed, fat-laden, yeast-based, deep-fried dough.
And then there's barbeque. Just about every state in the union claims to be the home of "the real thing" when it comes to the stuff. Each has its own unique characteristics, whether it's in the sauce, the rub, or the cooking technique. But, you can go wherever you want and you'll not find better pork ribs than the ones you'll find at Backwoods BBQ. These aren't the honey-based sauce-slathered ribs your uncle incinerates over fluid-soaked charcoal every year in his Kiss the Cook apron. No, these are a whole different game. You won't find yourself gesticulating toward your cousin in a plea for the Heimlich maneuver to dislodge the fist-sized globule of fat from your windpipe. These are the falling-off-the-bone, no-sauce-needed, slow-smoked-the-way-God-intended ribs you can only get at Backwoods. And while you're there, you might as well enjoy a cold mug from their small, but excellent, selection of beers to wash it down. If you drop in, be sure to tell them Walt sent you. Hell, I may even be there, myself. So, there you have it. If you find yourself in Paducah, Kentucky in search of good eats, you have no excuse for not finding any. And if you leave without trying at least one of them -- well, you've screwed up and sentenced yourself to a lifetime of second-tier burgers, donuts and barbequed pork ribs. But, hey -- if you can live with it, so be it. Tonight's ONT brought to you by Paducah native and Benny Hill soundtrack creator, Boots Randolph. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Speaking of drunkards and whores....
I saw a news story on the CBC where they are continuing to supply free heroin to the addicts up here in Canada. I think I'm being screwed over. I don't do it anymore but I'm still capable of killing 14 beers or so occasionally. Shouldn't I qualify as disabled and shouldn't someone from the damn government occasionally supply me with a supply for the occasional bender? I love hamburgers, and have eaten just about every "best" burger in America, courtesy of my intensive business travel schedule. Whataburger was better in the 70's, and In-N-Out is a good burger (really, what McDonald's should aspire to be) but nothing extraordinary except for the freshness of the condiments. Five Guys is OK, and Fatburger gave me food poisoning. I also love Tommy's for a good chili cheeseburger, but that's a different animal entirely.
For mass-produced burgers, however, I have to give the nod to Carl's Jr./Hardees (owned by the same company, with basically the same menu). But without a doubt, the best commercially-produced burger in America is made by a restaurant with a single location: Zippy's Giant Burgers in White Center, WA (White Center's nickname is "Rat City, but don't let that intimidate you). The burgers are huge, they cook them to perfection, and there are so many options available that it boggles the mind. My favorite is the Jimbo, with enough jalapeno slices to satisfy even the most fanatical jalapeno fan, and my wife loves the Great Dane, with blue cheese and bacon. But even their standard burgers are excellent. Posted by: CQD at November 22, 2014 10:14 PM (tcvYF) 82

Mr Y-not and I tried a new restaurant tonight. Food was pretty successful, but they didn't seem ready for launch. This is the third place, each slightly different, opened by successful SLC restauranteurs. Their first place is very good (you can get roasted bone marrow there even on a weekday lunch). Second place is fun - more of a bar/nosh concept. (A little small. Mr likes it better than I do.)
This place is in one of the Salt Lake "burbs" and they may hurt their brand a bit. A few misses on the food, but mostly the facility, and especially the tables/seating, were not up to snuff. Plus, what is it with these "craft cocktails" places that steadfastly refuse to explain what their friggin' weird-o cocktail is? (And don't bring their waitstaff up to speed on how to describe them.) Wound up ordering a Moscow Mule that was made with ginger ale and served in a high ball glass. *ding goes the TripAdvisor review* Posted by: Y-not at November 22, 2014 10:22 PM (9BRsg) 122

The waitress would take 10 orders in a minute and yell them out to the owner/cook and I never saw them get an order wrong. Those were the best burgers and fries I've ever had. To be fair, they give you about $10 worth of fries.
Posted by: Bob Belcher Quality fries, no doubt. And I couldn't eat them all in one sitting if I tried. But, if your fries are a stronger point than your burger ... I think there is a dividing line here between a diner burger, and a fast-food, chain-store burger. Five Guys opted for a diner burger model crammed into a 'fast' food joint. (the stores I've been to have been anything but fast.) In 'N Out are part of the original fast-food chain model; good, fast, cheap. Their fries are an acquired taste. I like them, and if you crispy critics would bother, they will twice-fry your order. Just ask. Five Guys burgers are decent, the fries are very good, but the meals are fucking expensive and not so fast. Posted by: weft cut-loop at November 22, 2014 10:24 PM (s9AKD) 128

We had links about that a while ago. The full story of the "97%" lie is linked in my sock, Costanza Defense including this part...
The Doran paper has been criticised by many sceptics in the past, where a survey of 10,256 with 3146 respondents was whittled down to 75 out of 77 "expert" 'active climate researchers' (ACR) to give the 97% figure, based on just two very simplistic (shallow) questions that even the majority of sceptics might agree with. The only burger Whataburger beats is McDonalds. I live two blocks from a Whataburger and after two or three tries I went back to Wendy's, which is far superior. About once or twice a week I stop by Whataburger to buy a double burger (plain and dry) for my doggie. he loves them, so there's that. The bacon at Whataburger comes as a couple of small slabs of limp and stringy fat, which should tell you how unserious this restaurant chain is about the quality of its food. The people at Whataburger are always very friendly, which doesn't make up for the mediocre food. I'm not trying to be overly negative; I'm just responding to someone's comment above about how great Whataburger is.

I suspect that things are going to get nasty at a lot of Thanksgiving dinners. My brother and liberal sister in law just had a new grandbaby courtesy of their son and his wife. I'm hoping they don't come to Thanksgiving because I am in a very mean mood. Turkey legs could be hurled at people's heads.

Regarding fast food burgers, I gotta give a shout out to Backyard Burger. The one I used to visit when I lived in Olathe, KS, was very good, with non-surly staff. Only complaint I have is that there came a point when they began overlooking their burgers, I assume for food safety reasons. Before that, they were cooked perfectly.

Ah, more "global warming" nonsense. Speaking of which, here's a Salon article that's making the lib-Stupid-Sphere: http://tinyurl.com/md6bf2y I will guaran-damn-tee you that all the progs saying that this is yet another salvo in the "War on 'Science'" didn't read a damn word of the actual bill. Here's the part of the bill where Linsday Abrams says it's such an outrage: "Board members may not participate in advisory activities that directly or indirectly involve review or evaluation of their own work;" Gee, I wonder why this clause was put in there? Could it be that it is a wee bit of a potential conflict of interest for people on an advisory board (that could potentially affect laws) to talk directly about their own research (not expertise)? Would they be fine with an industry scientist saying that whatever process and/or drug they were working on is completely safe and beneficial? Probably not. Back in Texas, a Korean man made the very best doughnuts and sausage rolls I have ever eaten. Mr. Peter's Doughnuts, in Crowley. They melt in your mouth with this amazing butter/ honey glaze. Krispy Kreme sucks compared to these. Plus, f you are a reghoar ( or were on a six week rotation for bringing doughnuts to your Sunday school class, and thus bought a trunkful ) he would make springrolls, and just give them to you. Mercy.

o/t after >200 posts... I saw "St. Vincent" (2014) in the theater today.
It is a deeply subversive movie. Subversive of all the false pieties of an evil, unhappy age. Subversive of the notion that redemption, even sainthood, is impossible in the environs of Sheepshead Bay. Subversive in alluding strongly to Jn 8. A strongly anti-abortion movie... Deeply subversive in that it shows the natural yearning of the child-soul for God. Subversive in that it depicts R.C Religious in a positive, even admirable, light. It is so subversive, they may come after Bill Murray for it. Posted by: fBW52 at November 22, 2014 10:58 PM (fBW52) 264

Researchers are also walking back that the European Bronze Age collapse was the result of climate-change at all: http://www.bradford.ac.uk/mediacentre/news-releases/climate-change.php?bnr The disruption was - brace yourself - the result of the collapse of the bronze market. Because people were buying steel instead. Because the Bronze Age had just ended. I know, right? Moki, a funny story:
My grandfather washed out of Navy Bootcamp in 1918 from erysipelas. The story is that grandpa called his mom (g-grandma to me) and told her what was going on and why he was being medically discharged, she was slightly deaf and it was a terrible phone connection, and she thought he said "syphilis" and was horrified. (and Salvarsan was pretty much the only treatment other than Mercury, and it was not common at that time) Posted by: Kindltot at November 22, 2014 11:11 PM (t//F+) 302

Jeff Goldstein tried that recently with Southwest and Southwest took that opportunity to soak him. So, don't fly Southwest.
Posted by: boulder terlit hobo at November 22, 2014 11:43 PM (AVEe1) BTH, Southwest doesn't fly into the Far North. Air Canada, Canada North, and First Air do. There is regular 737 service from Edmonton to Yellowknife. And Buffalo Airways, the company featured on that Ice Pilots TV series, is based out of Yellowknife. By the way, "wangle" and "wrangle" are different. The latter means to control or manipulate something, e.g. cattle. A cattle wrangler would load them into a truck, for instance. "Wangle" means to obtain something through persuasion or negotiation. For example, "I schmoozed with the client, and wangled two tickets to the hockey game." Moment of your time. AllenG could use some prayers. Went to a kids' bday party today. Roller rink. He decided to give it a whirl. While roller skating, a little girl fell right in front of him. Second, reminds me of a very nice short trip I once did. Out of DC, with the now-wife, a short golf tript to the Roanoke area. Friday, last day of our package, I started to think - hmmm, lookee here, we're no more than a hop and skip from Lexington NC, one of the meccas of barbeque. So I changed our plan, instead of returning to DC we drove south to Lexington. Friday night dinner at the Honey Monk/Lexington #1. Early-ish lunch at another barbeque place I cannot remember, then took out a good portion of pulled pork and rolls from Speedy's. Drove to Winston-Salem. Had a donut at the original Krispy Kreme location. Poked around old town Salem a bit, then drove east toward the interstate, stopping at a winery/cheese-making farm (stunned by the quality of the cabernet franc). Then back to DC. I call it my "Redneck Gourmet Tour". Wow was that stuff good. Posted by: rhomboid at November 23, 2014 12:29 AM (afQnV) 493

If that Siberian flash was an impact event and not some chemical burn or other man made explosion I would judge by the time it took the fireball to grow in brightness and the length of time that it glowed - that the impact event was in the hundreds of Kilotons of TNT range. Much larger than the WWII 20 Kiloton atom bomb.
Because it was on the ground - if it was an impact event - I would guess an Iron meteorite. Remember that sound takes over 4 minutes to cover 50 miles - so a rumble coming that size blast at a long distance might not be associated with the light by observers. Truman and the bomb. Doesn't take a bit of the deserved credit away from Truman, but people today - both reasonable people and the idiotic moral narcissist revisionists - usually misunderstand the situation.
It was not, as often portrayed today, some huge "OMG this is a completely new horrible thing, do we dare cross this rubicon?!" decision. Not even close. By summer of 1945 the Allies had been incinerating Axis cities for 2+ years. The prosaic 2.5-lb (?) firebomb had, just 5 months before Hiroshima, killed nearly as many Tokyo residents as did the first atomic strike. And that was just the start. My copy's in storage, but I believe in Richard Frank's "Downfall" he nicely sets the record straight, that "the decision" to drop the bomb had almost none of the framework and freight ascribed to it today. The (silly) idea of some scientists for a "demonstration" strike was never taken seriously, and the few objections (such as Adm. Leahy's rather contemptible and illogical and cynical "objection") were never big factors. The Allies used every militarily useful weapon and tactic they had as they became available -the bomb became available in July 1945. It is simply upside-down to assume/imply that a potentially highly effective weapon, whose development had consumed a measurable % of even the highly mobilized US economy during the war, would simply not be used due to moral considerations that had not affected any other war-time decision. It was just a big bomb. In the event, the hope that novelty and shock value would compel Japanese acceptance of Potsdam was dashed. The Japanese military literally did not change their minds about their high-cost strategy (not crazy fanaticism, strategy) to resist the US in order to secure terms short of unconditional surrender. The Emperor and Lord Kido didn't change their minds due to the bomb - they merely seized on it as a convenient rationale for ending the war, as they already wanted to do. experienced the transition from Gen D Eisenhower to JFK
True story, happened a couple of weeks ago: I have friends of various ages. At a small get-together was me, a couple of friends in their mid-30s, and another friend who was born in 1959 (and thus is 55). During the course of the conversation, the guy born in 1959 said, lamenting how old he felt amongst younger people, "Here's how old I am: My mom said that one of the first words I ever said was 'Eisenhower'!" [Guffaws, takes a drink.] This story met with blank stares from the thirty-somethings. "You first word was what?" "Eisenhower. Seriously" "What's an 'Izen-howser'?" "Y'know -- Eisenhower. He was still president when I learned how to talk! I'm that old!" The thirty-somethings looked at each other quizzically, then shrugged. The 55-year-old clarified: "President Eisenhower. People forget he was president up though January 1961! How weird is that?" Well, rather than recount the whole conversation, the upshot was: The thirty-somethings not only didn't know Eisenhower was president until 1961... ...They not only didn't know that Dwight Eisenhower had ever been elected president... ...but they had never heard of Eisenhower!!! And they both had master's degrees! What did they learn in college? Nothing, apparently. What did they learn from life? Nothing, apparently. And these are the smarter, more educated members of their generation. Doomed, I say we are. Doomed. Posted by: zombie at November 23, 2014 01:11 AM (K4YiS) 517

I was recently looking up the plans for Olympic and Coronet.
April 1945, JCS estimated total casualties on the Allied side to be around 1.2 million missing, dead, or wounded for both invasions of Downfall. William Shockly tried to put an estimate on Japanese casualties, he was in the ballpark of 5 million to 10 million dead Japanese. That is what the idiots who tsk tsk the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki forget. To feel morally superior they are willing to accept that horrendous butcher's bill. There are VERY divided opinons about it in the zombie household. I found it extremely well-done, atmospheric and spooky. And despite the fact that I LOATHE Donald Sutherland intensely, this is the only film of his I can tolerate watching. Conversely, another member of the zombie household ranks "Don't Look Now" as among the five worst films ever made. Tedious, pretentious, pompous, incomprehensible. And then, yes, the presence of Donald Sutherland. So I can report that it's either a supernatural classic, or an atrocious bomb. You decide! Anna, excellent point, and one I make whenever this ridiculous discussion actually comes up with shallow "skeptics".
But let me reinforce your point. Forget Japan itself for a moment. Every day the war continued, across the remaining swath of Japanese-controlled Asia/Pacific - eastern China, Vietnam, Burma, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia(using current names) - many many deaths occurred. There are estimates of daily numbers but I forget them. Combat casualties, depredations against resistance elements, and the largest category of all, excess deaths from disruption and privation, always the biggest "killers" of mankind. I need to look at Shockly's analysis. Remember - as always in war-time, prosaic public health problems kill multiples of those killed by weapons. Japan was on the precipice of a major public health catastrophe by summer 1945 (hell, it stayed near that precipice til nearly 1947, occupation forces were barely able to avert major crises in the early years). So an Operation Olympic, besides generating horrific Japanese casualties on Kyushu, would imply a continuing and worsening situation elsewhere. US commanders were having arguments about attacking *fishing boats* in the mined, blockaded, increasingly heavily patrolled (aircraft and subs) waters off Japan. THAT is how totally the crushing vice of American dominationwas affecting Japan. Oh - and there never was an "either/or" about bombs and invasion. The Pentagon hoped to use up to 15 (? may be wrong, but number was in the teens) atomic bombs in support of Olympic landings in Kyushu. It was going to be atomic bombs AND invasion holocaust if surrender did not occur. As with (almost every?) so many issues today, barely a single solitary element of the framework, much less the "points of view", has any basis in reality. The entire "debate" over using the bomb today proceeds from false assumptions and frameworks. Oh - and I believe there are still 100,000+ Purple Heart medals struck just for Olympic/Coronet that have yet to be awarded to US servicemembers. We are STILL using the first tranche of medals intended for those operations today, 70 years later. Posted by: rhomboid at November 23, 2014 01:38 AM (afQnV) 545

Great post, DDR. I'm hungry now.
*** I saw Bob Dylan tonight (well, last night by now) at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia. That's a place that normally hosts symphony orchestras and operas, so the acoustics are excellent and I was seated near the soundboard. Dylan's voice sounded excellent, better than I've heard in a long time. Maybe some of the complaints about the quality of his voice have to do with the acoustics at the venues where he normally plays. The band, of course, was awesome as usual. These guys have been playing together for years and are just an amazing bunch of musicians. They played 19 songs in all, and it broke down as follows: 2 from the 60s, 2 from the 70s, 1 from the 80s, 2 from the 90s, 2 from the 2006 album "Modern Times", 2 from the 2009 album "Together Through Life", and a whopping 6 from the 2012 album "Tempest". That leaves two outliers. I got home awhile ago but I've been busy tracking down some stuff before posting my review. The last song he did was "Stay With Me" which turned out to be a cover of a song Frank Sinatra sang in a 1963 movie I've never heard of. Here is a website that features both versions. The Dylan version is an audience recording which is lacking in quality. https://tinyurl.com/lszr7bm The other one was "Waiting for You" which I've never heard of, and which was the highlight of the concert for me. It was a playful waltz. It doesn't appear on any album. He played it twice in 2005, so it may have been an outtake from "Modern Times". But it's been featured continuously since October 2013. Here are the lyrics: http://www.metrolyrics.com/waiting-for-you-lyrics-bob-dylan.html Here is an April 2014 audience recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCPrS2nmQfs Unfortunately, the visuals in the YouTube are dumb, distracting, and have nothing to do with the song. So I recommend that you open the lyrics and the YouTube in separate windows, start the music, then drag the lyrics window on top and follow along. Or else just close your eyes and listen. This was the most expensive concert I've ever attended, and it was worth every penny. Posted by: rickl at November 23, 2014 01:44 AM (sdi6R) 548

Anna, it has rarely come up, but when it has I simply do side-by-sides of Hiroshima/Nagasaki vs. a virtual holocaust of Japanese society, plus the horrendous ongoing losses outside Japan, plus a conservative estimate of mass killings of internees and POWs that may well have occurred based on the various orders to different regional commands for action in the event of a home islands invasion.
This is usually enough to remind them that they really know nothing about the subject, and risk humiliation and intellectual disembowelment if they persist .... Posted by: rhomboid at November 23, 2014 01:51 AM (afQnV) 555

Anna as I said in my earlier wall of text, the decision to use the bomb was not much of a decision at all, and nothing like the wholly imaginary "crossroads" imagined in contemporary ignorance and moral narcissism festivals. We'd been incinerating Axis cities for several years, and Japanese ones for 5 months (a former mayor of Tokyo used to mock the "Hiroshima cult" for glorifying the smaller losses of that city vs. Tokyo's).
Oh, and anyone have a wild guess which city in Japan had the highest % of military personnel among its total population on August 6, 1945? And which was the main rear Japanese HQ for the correctly anticipated US invasion of Kyushu? Uh huh. You know. Posted by: rhomboid at November 23, 2014 02:02 AM (afQnV) 571

weft, Nagasaki is on the short list for next Japan trip.
Those hills, and the generally mishap-plagued nature of Bock's Car bombing mission, in the end saved lives in Nagasaki. Sweeney (reasonably, under the circumstances), decided to defy orders and bomb blind (radar). The bomb "missed" in the sense of not being close to the intended ground zero, instead detonating over the largest Catholic cathedral in Asia (Anna noted the city's western influences above). The divergence from the intended aim point, and the hills, served to reduce casualties and damage. Which was a great thing from all viewpoints, as the process of engineering the surrender was already under way, and the Nagasaki attack would not figure into it (I think the Big Six were getting their marching, er, surrender orders from the Emperor that very morning). rickl Thank you for the review of the concert. I grew up in Hibbing, MN, where Bob did, and I have been a fan forever. I have seen him twice, and enjoyed his shows each time. I hope I get another chance Posted by: alamrgo at November 23, 2014 02:00 AM (mk9G5) When did you see him? His shows since about 1990 have been uniformly excellent. His current band is awesome. And his last four or five albums since 1997's "Time Out Of Mind" are among the best of his career. He averages 100 concerts a year, a pace that would kill musicians half his age. Dude is the Energizer Bunny of music. I try to see him every time he's in my area, which averages out to once a year, sometimes twice. So I've seen him about 40 or 50 times since my first show in 1978. Posted by: rickl at November 23, 2014 02:23 AM (sdi6R) 586

532 Anybody here ever see the 1973 classic Nicholas Roeg film with Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie, "Don't Look Now"???
Does Julie Christie get nekid?? Otherwise, I'll skip it. Sometime back, I watched Shampoo on TCM. Even though I loath Warren Beatty, it had Julie Christie in it, so I watched it. She got nekid and that is the only thing I remember about it. I remember reading the MAD magazine version when i was a kid. The MAD version was better than the movie. Oh, forgot. It is just me, or are is the hysteria over riots following the Ferguson grand jury announcement baseless? I have no sense whatsoever of this thing being that big a deal to most of the country.
Outside of Ferguson itself, I'd not be surprised by *crickets*, whatever the outcome (though it's pretty hard to imagine any sort of indictment for what sounds like a sadly everyday open/shut case of a cop defending himself from a violent and irrational attack. From the Ace Archives: "Thank God For The Atom Bomb" [ArthurK] http://minx.cc/?post=342242 Selected excerpts: "The A-bombs meant, he [ John Kenneth Galbraith ] says, "a difference, at most, of two or three weeks." But at the time, with no indication that surrender was on the way, the kamikazes were sinking American vessels, the Indianapolis was sunk (880 men killed), and Allied casualties were running to over 7,000 per week. "Two or three weeks," says Galbraith. Two weeks more means 14,000 more killed and wounded, three weeks more, 21,000. " and: "During the closing phase of the Pacific War, average monthly deaths, military and civilian, in Japanese held-territories in China, southeast Asia, Indonesia, and the Philippines, from disease, starvation, atrocities, or combat, was about 400,000 men, women, and children." Out of sequence, but ... needed: "That's a bit 'of what happened in six days of the two or three weeks posited by Galbraith. What did he do in the war? He worked in the Office of Price Administration in Washington. I don't demand that he experience having his ass shot off. I merely note that he didn't." It insists on itself. Otherwise, I enjoyed it. The story ain't bad, and the actors did well with it (I would marry Charlize Theron if she showed up here tonight). I think a little LESS time spent on explaining to us how nasty and brutish live was in the 1800s-era Arizona Territory, and the movie would be up there among the better Western parodies. Not "Blazing Saddles" good but certainly "Three Amigos" good. Posted by: boulder terlit hobo at November 23, 2014 02:52 AM (AVEe1) 602
Thanks Arbalest, I remember that post.
WTF could have been Galbraith's reasoning on 2 or 3 weeks? I'm not aware of any developments at the time that would have likely caused Lord Kido and Hirohito to suddenly decide on surrender. Soviet entry into the war? Don't buy that. Tokyo had hollowed out the Kwangtung Army in Manchukuo to fight the Americans and bolster home island defenses, so the Soviets rolled over a very weakened force. If Tokyo feared the Soviets more than the Americans, they had a funny way of showing it when allocating some of their last prime military assets. The Soviets would not be in a position to actually invade Japan before November (date for Olympic). In any case almost none of the specifics of the internal process were known to the US - hell, it's hardly an exaggeration to say that two people in all of Japan were relevant to the actual decision. Not a chance we could play a clever game, the enemy was a plain black box with no leaks (the various initiatives and views of minor players that we did know from signals intel didn't amount to anything usable). True story: My father-in-law, who shall go unnamed, worked with Julie Christie in the late Fifties/early Sixties when they both were coming up through the ranks in NYC theater. Christie babysat my wife when she visited her dad after her parents' divorce. He introduced us to her in Seattle many years ago after a play they were both in. She was obviously tired from the day's work but was very gracious.
